The Jam Answer

The Jam Answer (7:20)
Island Hill Microdot (6:23)
Review: The Vendetta Suite returns in early 2025 with a stunning pair of singles on Hell Yeah, blending acid acerb, house heat, disco d'oeuvres and a Balearic bliss. Long thought by some to be Belfast's best-kept secret, the Suite has garnered well-deserved traction for his genre-spanning productions, fusing ambient, post-rave, dub and psychedelic. First up, 'The Jam Answer' reinvents acid house with dusty analogue drums, hypnotic 303s, and cosmic cantatas; then the flipper 'Island Hill Microdot' drifts over into dreamy Chicago house and IDM, offering a lusher, tuned bamboo percussive pelagi-scape.

Review: London-based DJ and producer Steven Julien's music blends contrasts and has done so across more than a decade on labels like Eglo and his own Apron Records. In that time he has explored various styles, from house and techno to soul and boogie, often drawing on his own life experiences for inspiration. His eclecticism extends to his contribution to !K7's wonderful DJ-Kicks series in a mix that features artists like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Todd Edwards along with Julien's own tracks. The mix takes you on a proper ride from a peaceful afternoon to a euphoric night on the dancefloor, with plenty of big moments and killer jams along the way.

Review: After a 10-year hiatus, Balearic Mike and Kelvin Andrews return to continue the journey of the Balearic Beat with another edition of their distinguished Down To The Sea And Back compilation series, presenting a formidable new set of rare and obscure records. Once more sifting from the formidable crock of late 80s to intra-90s Balearic music, this eight-track LP begins on a serene note with the expertly layered guitars from Dagobert Bohm on their re-arrangement of Josete Ordonez, before moving into increasingly complex but still no less sunny waters from the likes of Vidderna, Lee Ryda, and Pressure Drop. A veritable three years' worth of digging, finally condensed into a single selection.

Inspired by NiNo's recent experience of fatherhood, the album reveres the essence of family, birth, and the marvel of new life. Review: This is the latest outing in a strong string of releases from Polymorphism, a label that embraces and works with artists from across the world in a bid to turn back catalogue into a kind of cultural map. A record of the differences we should celebrate, from one corner of the globe to the next, and the ties that bind despite the two ends being thousands of miles apart. For February 2025, the imprint looks to Danish artist Vanity Productions. One of many highly skilled and creative names working in the country's ambient-electronic scene, here we're given two beautiful originals worthy of that sunrise in your mind, and a pair of remixes keeping up the international concept. The first from Italy's Ireen Amnes, the other Iranian studio type Farzane.

Drawing Future Life - "1969" (6:28)
Review: Music From Memory totally recall and compile this next instalment in their popular multi-artist compilation series, Virtual Dreams. This time centring on Ambient Explorations In The House And Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999, this second edition in the series follows on from the first released in 2020, and continues to shine a light on the house and techno-adjacent music that helped redefine the definition of ambient music during the 1990s. While the first focused on Europe, we venture far further East here, primarily riffing on the many ambient flows and sequential somnaumblisms eminent from the J-shaped isle from the time, including the trans-missive floater, 'Phoenix At Desert' by Akio and the pulse-tidal electro phaseout, Web's 'The Cycle Of Seasons'.

TM Solver - "Serious Ambient" (SOS edit) (5:43)
State Azure - "Azimuth" (5:22)
Lord Of The Isles - "Meet Me At The Portal" (3:04)
Review: This new one on Secrets of Sound has a rather grandiose title but the music is suitably accomplished to live up to it. Johnny Jewel gets things underway with a lavish and jazzy ambient scape turned gentle broken beat bliss-out. Elsewhere RAMZi's singular grasp of rhythms shines through with the rickety drums and cosmic moods of 'Existenz' and synth magician Legowelt cooks up a curious and whimsical sound on the escapist 'Nebia Vera Pelliccia'. Elsewhere, Lord Of The Isles slows things right down to late-night contemplation with 'Meet Me At The Portal.' A tasteful collection indeed.

This vinyl release gathers new gems from longtime contributors like Leandro Fresco, Pass Into Silence and Wurden & Schafe, who each bring lush soundscapes that feel like meditative journeys. Review: Perhaps the most captivating moment here is OVA's 'Rainforest,' opening with lush textures and shimmering rhythms that transport you to its titular environment. Jean-Michel Bertrand's 'Engines' shifts gears, its mechanical pulses intertwining with atmospheric layers. On the flip side, Four Drummers Drumming bring intensity with 'Wok,' a tightly constructed piece driven by cascading percussion. Founded by Zach Frizzell aka zake of Past Inside the Present fame, Healing Sound Propagandist (HSP) is based in Indianapolis and has quietly amassed a catalogue of nearly 100 releases since its inception, all of them specialising in textured drone and experimental ambient music. To mark this achievement, Retrospective [2019-2024] compiles 76 standout tracks across a five-hour odyssey through the label's most significant works. The compilation features artists like James Bernard, Pallette, and Sean Evans who, along with many others, create a varied world of atmospheres through unique instrumentations. HSP emphasises a focus on deep listening and quality over gimmicks and this retrospective serves both as a tribute to the label's legacy and an introduction to its transformative, meditative soundscapes.

Review: Tsunaki Kadowaki curates Midnight in Tokyo 4, exploring an obscure form, "Ambient Kayo", which shortens the Japanese pop phenomenon Kayokyoku or "Showa-era pop" and dissolves it in a blushing, titrated wash of ambience, taking cues from the "Showa-era" pop period that lasted roughly from 1977-1999. The compilation presents a diverse breadboard, with such charcuterie items as Yosui Inoue's 'Umi e Kinasai', an ambient pop gem and Balearic bisque, and Keiko Nosaka & George Murasaki's 'Oritatamu Umi', blending Okinawan and progressive rock. The collection also has hidden treasures like S.R. Kinoshita's 'Mangrove', a mystical New Age piece, and 'Yume Furin' by E.S. Island, capturing island life's higher vibrations. With contributions from iconic figures like Haruomi Hosono, this album is an evocative, genre-defying celebration of Japanese ambient pop that resonates with contemporary sensibilities.

Review: Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. A master arranger, Verocai's work with Brazilian legends shaped his visionary sound and have helped to cement him as a timeless force in music history.

Review: For their new album Lust 1, Voice Actor's Noa Kurzweil joins Welsh producer Squu for a woozy, intimate exploration of ambient sensuality. Following the sprawling Sent From My Telephone, this 45-minute work feels more focused but just as dreamlike with Kurzweil's hushed, often unintelligible vocals hovering over Squu's glowing pads and dubby pulses. With additional glitchy textures, soft hits and melancholic drones, the work forms a world that teeters between erotic hypnosis and emotional exhaustion. Highlights like 'You' and 'Nekk' blend vague ambience with jolting detail while pushing the sung-spoke-whispered words to the brink of abstraction. This is an album rich in fleeting emotions, tactile textures and forgotten memories.

Review: This double album on Profan marks the grand finale of Wolfgang Voigt's 'Best of' 1990s vinyl series which rightly celebrates a transformative decade in electronic music. This ninth instalment features a mix of iconic classics and first-time vinyl releases spanning from M:I:5 to Wassermann and culminating in a triumphant close to the era. As the music builds, it captures the energy and emotion of the decade before fading into the chiming bells of New Year's Eve. Part of the exclusive Earquake BOX, this release is both a tribute to and a culmination of the great Voigt's pioneering work during the nineties.
