Review: Umek has enjoyed a rather odd career, going from toast of the European techno underground to main room dancefloor hero over the best part of a decade. Here he joins forces with youngster Beltek for a full-length on commercial house heavyweight Toolroom. Out Of Play is in many ways an odd album, fusing elements of contemporary electro house, classic prog, loopy disco-house and big-room tech-house with the pounding pulse and relentless rhythms of techno. Yet it's not without its moments, and offers an enjoyable mixture of uncompromising bounce ("Keep The Frequency", "Charley Chopper"), twisted rhythms and unlikely anthems ("Let The Bass Kick", "Rasta Voice").

Review: Umek's journey has taken him from late '90s techno obscurity to globetrotting superclub headliner. In recent years, he's straddled the line between mainstream techno, tech-house and electrohouse, whilst retaining his love of sweaty rhythms, gargantuan beats and hypnotic jack. All three are can be found by the bucket-load on Toolroom Knights 2.0, a typically fun and funk-fuelled romp through peaktime territory. Those who enjoy his blends of tribal techno drums, classic house sheen and murky tech-house fuzziness will be in their element. Throughout, he sounds like he's having a rip-roaring time. If electronic music is about having fun first and foremost, Umek understands it better than most.
