113 Fout La Merde ! (acappella) (3:03)
Review: Thomas Bangalter will forever be best known as one half of robotic disco house sensations Daft Punk, but turned out various house and hip hop projects before and during the iconic pair's rise to fame. Once such outing came in 2002 when he paired doff with French hip hop collective
113 for "Fout La Merde", a raw single with plenty of different versions. "113 Fout La Merde!" in original format bares plenty of Daft Punk hallmarks with its hip swinging claps and vocodered vocals, while the dub is more bumpy and low riding. Add in an instrumental and a cappella and you have a fine package that is long overdue this reissue.

Review: 50 Cent redeems himself with his newest single, "Ayo Technology", featuring the hit-making team of Justin Timberlake's vocals and Timbaland's production. The song is about a mans pornography addiction (with 'technology' being used as a euphemism). With great lyrics, Justin's addictive vocals on the hook and Timbo's top-notch production, this could very likely be Fiddy's finest hour.

Zulu Walk (part 1) (3:55)
Zulu Walk (part 2 - instrumental) (3:43)
Review: If you missed this one when it first dropped in 2011, now's your chance to catch up on a serious slice of rootsy funk with some heavyweight players involved. Afrika Bambaatta teamed up with The Mighty Mocambos and Charlie Funk to record "Zulu Walk", and what a result. The groove is incredible, deep in the pocket and rolling forward with a mellow urgency that works for "Part 1" and the instrumental "Part 2" on the flip. King Kamonzi rides the beat on the A side in fine style, capturing a wild energy that wouldn't be out of place in the P-Funk pantheon. True-skool funk heads, don't sleep.

Azeem & The Architect - "Experiment 2"
Review: Azeem and Myka Nyne flow fluidly together over the first beat of this 12". Myka Nyne, best known for his membership in Freestyle Fellowship, has been deeply involved in the both the New York, and Los Angeles hip-hop scenes for years, where his solo career continues to flourish. Azeem and Myka Nyne are a natural one/two punch on "Basic Maneuvers" - trading verses then unifying to flip the hook. Supported by raw beats and rhythmic fuel, DJ Zeph and Azeem light up "The Fire" on the b-side. Azeem's mix tape fans will also appreciate the two Architect tracks on the inside of both sides - enlivened and street-conscious with a raw uncontainable spirit.

We Funk Tings (4:27)

The Time Has Come (2:59)
Review: For the first volume in their brand new Toxic Funk 45s series, the Breakbeat Paradise crew has turned to two stalwarts of the breaks scene, Easy Now Recordings co-founder Tom Showtime and long-serving DJ/producer Badboe. They hit the ground running with A-side "We Funk Tings", a cut-and-paste workout that peppers a head-nodding, bass-heavy hip-hop groove with funk licks, hazy horns and sneaky vocal samples from a variety of ragga and rap records. They continue in a similar vein over on side B, where the horn and piano-heavy hip-hop-funk of "We Have It Hot" is followed by the boom-bap booty business of "The Time Has Come".

Black Pocket - "The Road"
VeebeeO - "No More"

Super Smorky Soul - "Smoke College"

Review: Cinnaman (Rush Hour, Young Buck) and Jay Scarlett (Spacek Soundsystem) teamed up to compile an album dedicated to new developments in beats produced by the up-and coming as well as celebrated producers from all ages and backgrounds. These people are mostly brought together by the mighty internet, where they share and compete (with) their beats. These producers all have at least one thing in common; their love for beats. Cinnaman and Jay Scarlett have now brought together an unique selection of these beats, already coined Beatstrumentals. We packaged it as Beat Dimensions. The first two album samplers (total of three) are strictly limited to 500 copies and total 10 beats. Many new comers here, like VeeBeeO, Super Smorky Soul and Pursuit Grooves, but also known producers like Steve Spacek (as Black Pocket), Up Hygh, Aardvarck and Flying Lotus (as Flyandsam).

Outrage - "(Too Much) Energy"
Outrage - "Religious B-Boy"
The Blapps Posse - "Do What U Want To Do"
The Dynamic Guv'Nors - "These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"
Review: Well ahead of their time, The Blapps Posse cut some of the most agenda-setting records during the late 80s and early 90s. Gnawing and slapping their way through hip-hop, funk, hardcore and acid house, they made the records that soundtracked those early halcyon summers of love. This selection of cuts gathers the crews various guises and off-shoots and comprises the broadest of their abilities; from innocent formative hip-house ("Don't Hold Back"), sample-smashing seminal big beat ("Religious B-Boy") and bleep-style rave hopscotch ("These Guys Are Doper Than Dope"). Unearthed by Fat Hop champ Jerome Hill and remastered to stand up to today, this is a bona fide document.

Review: The Originals sample-seeking series continue as we're asked to compare and contrast an original source and a classic execution made years later. This is a perfect example; here Blue Mitchell's Blue Note 1967 smoky jazz instrumental (taken from his Heads Up! album) is remembered in all its multi-strand narrative glory before we jump deep into early 90s b-boy heaven by way of New York's UMC's. A fine lesson in how to work a sample to the funkiest effect.

Boca 45 - "It's All There" (feat Swaby) (3:09)
Boca 45 & The Bryan Munich All Stars - "Hot Wheels The Chase" (2:53)
Review: For the latest coloured vinyl missive on his 2020 Donuts label, veteran DJ/producer Scott Hendy AKA Boca 45 has enlisted the help of some of his many music industry mates. Kelvin Swaby, lead singer of The Heavy, lends his voice to A-side "It's All There", a low-slung chunk of flash-fried funk-rock rich in Prince-style guitar licks, jaunty bass and loose-limbed drum breaks. Over on side B, the Bristolian crate digger is joined by The Bryan Munich Allstars - an outfit whose members include Beak and Portishead man Geoff Barrow - for a fiery cover of Badder Than Evil's much-sampled 1973 funk bomb "Hot Wheels". Boca 45's new version rocks hard, with the ensemble cast laying down a scintillating funk-rock revision that will delight all those who loves the '73 original.

Jorun Bombay & The Espressolites - "Peas In An Alternate Universe" (4:22)
Jorun Bombay - "Mister Magic" (A Jorun Bombay edit - alternate version) (3:19)
Review: When it comes to delivering party-starting funk and soul 45s, Jorun Bombay has an impressive track record. His latest seven-inch is rather fine, too. On the A-side he joins forces with a trio of musicians to offer up "Peas In An Alternate Universe": a riff on JBs classic "Pass The Peas" that layers extended organ and trombone solos over a groove dominated by crunchy breakbeats and virtuoso bass guitar. Flipside "Mister Magic" is a deeper, warmer and more laidback affair, with tidy electric piano parts, toe-tapping drums, occasional string-laden disco samples and warm bass being joined by a simply wonderful new vibraphone solo.

James Brown - "Funky President" (extended Breaks Special edition) (4:25)
The Vibrettes - "Humpty Dump" (part 1 - extended Breaks Special edition) (3:16)
Review: For the second in their series of clear vinyl reissues of some of their most sought-after "sevens", the mysterious Breaks & Beats crew have chosen to revisit their fourth 45, which originally landed in early 2018. It's well worth picking up, if only for the version of James Brown classic "Funky Presisdent", which features extended grooves and breakbeats for added DJ pleasure and double-up opportunities. That said, we're also big fans of the mystery scalpel fiends' light-touch revision of the Vibrettes' brilliant, voodoo funk favourite "Humpty Dump (Part 1)". This, too, makes more of the original's short drum breaks and strutting instrumental grooves, before unleashing the female vocal group's great vocals.

James Brown & The Wu Tang Clan - "Sex CREAM" (3:33)
James Brown - "Sex Machine" (dub edit) (3:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole" edits series is one of the producer's biggest yet. A-side "Sex C.R.E.A.M" is particularly potent, with the mash-up maestro layering the vocals from Wu-Tang Clan classic "C.R.E.A.M" over a chunky beat crafted out of classic James Brown samples. To our ears, it's arguably better than the Wu-Tang original, or at least a little more dancefloor-friendly. Fittingly, Brown gets the treatment on the flip with Soopasoul getting busy with the EQs on a suitably heavy but stripped back "dub edit" of all-time-classic "Sex Machine". While it probably didn't need tampering with, he's done a very good job of delivering a version that successfully takes the track in a different direction.

Captain Gloats vs The Beastie Boys - "Ring My Cheque Up" (4:34)
Captain Gloats - "Chequestrumental" (4:34)
Review: A genius soundclash with a distinct New York flavour, bringing two generations of world beating sounds from the Big Apple together on the same track. The rapping is just as smart mouthed and amusing as you'd expect, but it's their unlikely pairing with these familiar 70s disco grooves and additional beat enhancing that brings this release to life. It all makes for a heady, ludicrous but also ludicrously natural sounding mashup that you can really imagine causing carnage on many a dancefloor. There's an instrumental mix on the flip, too, for those after something a little less audacious to spin, but the A-side is where the true action is.

He called it "Sex Cream", and now he's back with more sickly-sweet goodness based around the down-low greatness of the Godfather of Soul. A-side "More Sex Cream (Crooklyn Style)" delivers a similar-sounding JB-inspired beat, this time peppered with rhymes from "Crooklyn". DMX - "Party Up" (4:34)
Terror Squad - "Lean Back" (feat Fat Joe) (4:03)
Review: Two rowdy crunk classics reissued once again via Home Hitters. Focusing their efforts on keeping up the noughties' best but not yet forgotten hits in the genre, two new sickwarns top up the repertoire; first up is Fat Joe & Terror Squad's 'Lean Back', which brings a weighty crunk womp to a square command to lean back and rock away, envisaging a fresh new move for the floor-feet to repeat. Then there's the late DMX's 'Party Up', recalling the legendary rapper's icy, brash and woofy flows, which scrub starkly against a juddering array of militant electronic horns.

Supa (KD B-Boy edit) (4:00)
Supa (Deep In BKLYN edit) (4:05)
Review: Masters At Work's discerning left brain Kenny Dope left but one of many crinkle-cut marks on the sliced hot potato of dance musical oral history with 'Supa'. Born in Brooklyn, Kenny emerged from the underground hip-hop scene before lending a crate-digger's mentation to his work, obsessively chopping samples by way of tri-wielded MPC60, MPC3000 and E-mu SP-1200 machines. We're not sure which went into the making of 'Supa' and its two comprising versions, but this is a serious funk-jungle precursor, medleying ATCQ-Lou Reed instrumentals contra the acapella line from Super Cat's 'Nuff Man A Dead' (1991). Drop either of these tunas into an otherwise +160BPM set for a breezy, halftime surprise, one that nonetheless maintains the rolling energy.

DR DRE - "Nuthin' But A G Thang" (45 edit) (3:59)
The Lady Of Rage - "Afro Puffs" (45 edit) (4:01)
Review: For those whose Californian hip-hop collection is missing a few gems, the West Coast Classics series should be a must-check. The latest edition in the series of the light-touch "45 Edits" by Ronnie Frazzle serves up two more essential cuts from the peerless Dr Dre and lesser-celebrated Death Row Records signee The Lady of Rage. Side A boasts the superb "Nuthin' But A G Thing" from Dre's iconic 1992 album "The Chronic", in which the main man and Snoop Dogg trade verses over a typically on-point G-funk style beat. The Lady of Rage's 1994 jam "Afro Puffs" is a darker, sleazier and tougher affair, with the Virginia-raised rapper's distinctive flow rising above punchy beats, creepy chords and a filthy analogue bassline.

Dr Dre - "Deep Cover" (Introducing Snoop Doggy Dogg) (4:00)
Too Short - "Bad Ways" (4:04)
Review: The "West Coast Classics" series has a simple premise. It offers up light-touch re-edits of essential West Coast hip-hop hits from the style's glory years in the 1990s. The latest salvo boasts two must-have cuts. On the A-side you'll find Dr Dre's "Deep Cover", the cut that introduced the world to future star (and now iconic artist) Snoop Dogg. His flows work perfectly over Dre's low-slung beat, which makes great use of smoky instrumental samples from what sounds like the soundtrack of a 1970s spy thriller. Over on the flip you'll find Too Short's lesser-celebrated "Bad Ways", which first surfaced on the long-serving Los Angeles mic man's 1996 album "Gettin' It (Album Number Ten)" and makes use of elements from Parliament/Funkadelic classic "Flashlight".

Review: Professor Shorthair brings new life to classic grooves with Right Place Wrong Time, a limited edition splattered vinyl 7" that's as visually striking as it is sonically rich. Side-1 features the "Right Place Wrong Time" remix, a fresh take on Dr. John's iconic dance track. With updated drum work and a modern twist, this remix is tailor-made for the dance club, adding a hip edge to a timeless tune. On Side-2, "Hand Clapping Song" offers a stripped-down garage jam that blends funk and rock seamlessly. Reminiscent of Sly and the Family Stone, this remix captures the raw energy and infectious rhythm that will get listeners moving. Professor Shorthair's reimaginations make this a great vinyl for funk enthusiasts, offering two tracks that shine both on the turntable and the dancefloor.

"Funky Music Is The Thing" by The Corvettes, a funky-as-hell soul train, is beefed up by Mr Fantastic with a tidy little edit, whereas The D.O.C and their "Lend Me An Ear" hip-hop joint gets a nice touch-up of the modern B-Boys.

Baker Brothers - "Snap Back" (Funky Bijou remix) (5:07)
Review: The latest missive from France's Stereophonk imprint is a heavy double header focused on the production and remix work of cut-and-paste funk and soul heroes Funky Bijou. On side A you'll find a fresh slab of P-funk flavoured B-Boy breaks from the Gallic production twosome that wraps classic early '80s rap samples and excitable synth solos around punchy electro beats and a squidgy synthesizer bassline. On the flip they give their interpretation of the Baker Brothers' 2011 track "Snap Back", re-imagining it as a Clavinet-heavy slab of hazy soul rich in blue-eyed vocals, Funkadelic style synth stabs, squelchy bass and crunchy machine drums.

When we look back to the breakthrough years of hip-hop, two of the first tracks that spring to mind are 'White Lines' and 'The Message', where Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five proved there was a wealth of creative potential for the burgeoning rap movement. 'White Lines' is the all-out party monster sampling Liquid Liquid and dropping some insanely catchy hooks throughout. 'The Message' is quite simply one of the most important tracks of any genre, ever. Pristine electro synth lines and a hard-bitten look at street level reality, expressed with such poetic grace and unflinching honesty, it still leaves its mark decades later. Now, you can cop these two iconic gems on a none-funkier purple 7".

It's limited to just 200 copies and features five more exquisite little sketches that are loveably rough around the edges and full of laidback and dusty soul. Funky breaks, hip-hop, soul and disco all coalesce on this slice of breaksy joy, which occupies a refreshingly strange ideaspace somewhere between the worlds of electro-swing and mega-cool editry. Showtime's 'Jazz Biscuits' is an especially crisp and maximal track, hammering home the old adage: "showbusiness is everybody's business".

J Dilla - "Geek Down" (1:25)
The Jimi Entley Sound - "Charlies Theme" (3:09)
Review: In a rare backwards castling and killer checkmate, Friendly Records boldly re-press one of J Dilla's most beloved cuts, 'Geek Down', which appeared on his landmark Donuts LP. Known for its sample of the 2001 dark funk tune 'Charlies Theme' by The Jimi Entley Sound, this indelible, ringed hors d'oeuvre was essential for the critics' collective assessment that the 2005 LP was his magnum opus. Trailing pink sprinkles behind it, 'Geek Down' made Dilla's name. Sadly, the title would seem predict the artist's death just three days after the record's release. Dilla was a true productive geekazoid, and it shows in this track, with its untameable, above-the-law Western guitar wahs and tense, lilting strings keeping the goosebump hairs stood aright. The originally sampled track appears on the B, still only part-revealing the magic trick.
