Heavy Smoke EP

Deep Dubstep
Kaba Rhythm (3:55)
Sub 37 (5:04)
Heavy Smoke (4:34)
Review: Chad Dubz's Foundation Audio label outta Bristol remains a leading light in the bass, sound system and dubstep scene. This time out it is Kroomen and Somah who pair up for some mysterious late-night transmissions designed to rattle the walls. 'Kaba Rhythm' manages to be both light and airy yet dark and heavy all at once, with some Eastern melodies leading you ever deeper into the shadows. 'Sub 37' is all lurching kicks and skittish perc with twisted metallic textures and 'Heavy Smoke' is a slow and purposeful rhythm that takes its time to lure you in. It's golden-era dubstep that is as atmospheric as it is inviting.

Solarized Formation
Review: A truly heavyweight collab affair, Kryptic Minds and Sleeper have unleashed each other's beast with both of these cuts. "Axis Shift" is an uncompromising techno-minded behemoth, all double kicks and industrial growls. "Solarized Formation" is heavier again thanks its pneumatic stuttering rhythm and harrowed groans buried deep in the mix. Powerful stuff, and available on grey marbled vinyl... this is a very special release.

From Chicago Turin Amsterdam & Dublin With Love EP
Ksoul & Muteoscillator - "Take 1"
Chicago Skyway - "Resolution M"
Juju & Jordash - "Killing Raul With Acid"
Slowburn - "Meteor"
Review: Uzuri continue a fine run of record releasing form with this EP that culls talent from various international corners of the electronic world. Kicking off K Soul & Muteoscillator drop pounding stripped back Windy City machine funk on "Take 1" which comes replete with increasingly spasmodic 303 squiggles and desperate analogue riffs. "Resolution M" the subsequent offering from Chicago Skyway is resolutely deeper, laying some vintage Heard style ethereal synths down as the backdrop to a lolloping metallic kick drum groove. On the flip JuJu & Jordash stick two gloriously acid tinged fingers up at anyone who dismisses the duo as mere deep house fodder with the grainy 303 textures of "Killing Raul With Acid". Irish newcomer Slowburn rounds off a solid and at points surprising twelve inch with the stripped down rhythmic drum track "Meteor".

Review: Originally released as 13 track digital album earlier this year, here we find Soulab curating a selected soulful four-way for all vinyl lovers. Showing the set at its most embracive and far-reaching, we're treated to a ridiculously cool, sleazy digi-lounge version of "Big Fun" and a super-slamming high NRG take on "Boogie". Further on label mainstays get creative with a very well known Mohawks sample while Guiseppe Storniolo gets deep with a timeless nod towards Detroit. Soul is back... And back for good!

Modeselektor presents Modeselektion Vol 3 #1
L-Vis 1990 - "Funk 4D"
Schlachthofbronx - "Volumen" (feat Buraka Som Sistema)
Illum Sphere - "Bullet"
French Fries - "Shift"
Review: Ahead of the full Modeselektion 3 compilation (which looks to be the most diverse collection thus far) Monkeytown offer a 12" taste of what to expect featuring contributions from Night Slugger L Vis 1990, Schlachthofbronx, Illum Sphere and French Fries. Calling shotgun, L Vis 1990 lays down what can only be described as a not-messing-about-mate marker in the shape of the awesomely surreal industrial/ghetto house hybrid "Funk 4D", German Disko B regulars Schlachthofbronx also turn up with Buraka Som Systema for the totally out there detuned grind "Volumen". Illum Sphere lays down some brisk, taut percussive styles on "Bullet" whilst ClekClekBoomer French Fries reps Paris with the Mike Parker gone electro vibes of "Shift".

Lovers of vinyl culture and "epic dialogue of cinema's yesteryear" they mix up those influences with hip hop and reggae into fresh new forms. This new EP - "Golden Nuggets" - in collaboration with the Jamaican Skarra Mucci aka the "Dancehall President", offers crisp digi dub, UK funky drum patterns and plenty of synthesised bass to get your party pumping, all with some natty vocal deliveries, odes to weed and plenty of praise given to jah.

Defekt - "Sini Star" (4:04)
Schacke - "Lowest Of Highs" (6:52)
Review: Bloody Mary presents the second edition in her celebratory 10 Years Of Dame Music series and she's not messing around. Presenting four tracks that mean business, lunging straight for the jugular from the get-go: Lady Starlight follows up some great material of late for Figure and Arcing Seas with her contribution here titled 'C One Three' - a pummelling and mentalist acid techno trip, followed by yet more of Cardopusher's wicked modern EBM mutations as heard on 'Metal Rain'. On the flip, DeFeKT offers us some truly evil sounding darkness underpinned by bubbling acid, before the ever reliable Schacke goes out all guns blazing on 'Lowest Of Highs', full of rave/trance motifs that herald the death of euphoria.

Lakes Of Grass & Gold - "Strands Of Grass/Wake"
Lakes Of Grass & Gold - "Lament"
Svarte Grenier - "Lightning" (cut)
Review: Reverb, sombre strings, a slight flamenco touch, dynamic range - something so often lost in today's music - together with the kind of heavy metal distortion you'd expect from a band like Mastodon is what makes this Landscape Of Open Eyes 7" such an intriguing and special release. Erik Enocksson introduces his new Lakes Of Grass And Gold project with the support of Digitalis Limited's Svarte Greiner (real name Erik K. Skodvin) and together the two have many years of abstract and acoustic experimentations behind them - if you're a fan of Roll The Dice, but after something with a harder edge, this is it.

Serena Butler - "Fertile Fancy" (3:50)
Estrato Aurora - "Icnita" (7:21)
Vera Logdanini - "Vplanet" (6:53)
Review: Following fine EPs from Healing Force Project and Mesak in 2017 and 2018, On Board Music flips the script on its first and only vinyl release of 2019. "Point A" is the Berlin-based label's first mini-compilation and it's well worth a listen. Lanoche kicks things off via a spot of ultra-deep dub techno/ambient techno fusion (the wonderful "Love Fall", before Yugen doffs a cap towards the hypnotic, synthesizer-driven sound of late 1970s Krautrock on the suitably cosmic "Phantom". Serena Butler's "Fertile Fancy" is an immersive drift through enveloping ambient, Estrato Aurora's "Icnita" a bubbling deep techno epic and Vera Logdanini's "Vplanet" an acid-flecked trip into locked-in electronic hypnotism. In other words, this is a very fine collection of cuts.

We Play House/Lany Recordings Summer Special 2010

Deep House
Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Review: With the release of San Soda's brilliantly diverse debut album nearly upon us, We Play House team up with sister imprint Lany Recordings for some last minute hype building on this summer sampler. The Belgian youngster delivers two tracks across the WPH side that delver further evidence of a talent that belies someone so young. "Birdies" is the most instantly rewarding track, driven by clever usage of a Motown classic, the distinct piano lines driving this slice of classic sounding house. "Voor De Sfeer" runs at a slower pace but burns deeper and bursts with energy when vintage rave melodies and vocal stutters are introduced. Lany honcho Maxim Lany oversees proceedings on the flip with "The Owgee" a straight up club cut. A tough compressed tech house groove is the backdrop to a harmonious vocal led melody that gets shifted above and below the mix with aplomb.

Tommy Largo - "Come On" (Julian Sanza mix)
Adam B - "Smoketown" (Harold Heath mix)
Jay Tripwire - "Everytime" (Pete Dafeet's unreleased dub)
Subterfuge & Tony Thomas - "Gettin Serious" (Tommy Largo mix)
Review: After a whirlwind first 15 months, Lost My Dog are marking their 10th release revisiting some of the labels biggest tracks with fresh remixes. First up is Julian's mix of "Come On" which keeps the original hook and fuses it with 2020 style beats, a stomping electro tinged bassline and quirky keys. Harold's mix of "Smoketoke" has an old school feel to it with a 90s garage style synths, a deep growling bass, techy flicks and driving beats to carry it all along. Pete's dub of "Everytime" is a chilled out groover with squelchy beats and warm bass. The original vocal parts, crafted into keys, stabs and pads, generate an ethereal mood which peaks as the track descends into an inviting, smooth breakdown. Tommy's take on "Gettin' Serious" rounds things off, giving the track an acid twist; aimed directly at the dancefloor his mix gets down to business from the off with pumping beats and a bassline that does all the work. "The whole EP is large, Julian Sanza remix of Tommy Largo is the top pick. But all of them are amazing" - James Talk, "Julian Sanza mix does it Hot for me on this EP. This track is poppin and jumpin like a wet noodle out the boiler. Julian's mix will definitely be on my top ten" Spettro (Doubledown, Amenti), "Great EP! Love the remix of "Gettin' Serious". Real groovy" - Tyler Stadius, "I like the tracks a lot!" - Jay West (Lowdown, Agave), "Great! Charted #5" - Murray Richardson, "Wicked tracks. Reckon that there's something in the package for all occasions. Particularly liking the Julian Sanza remix of "Come On" - nice funked up 303 vibe. Will be rocking these in Brazil later this month!" - Shafunkers (Saved), "Great production, loving the Pete Dafeet dub" - Luckystars (Urbantorque), "All round cool release, Harold works his tech magic as ever, the pick for me goes to the house vibes 'Come On', cool lazy acid house...wicked!" - Leigh Morgan (Urbantorque), "Julian is quality. Nice gentle start with the original acid - then two minutes in, hold on to your drinks 'cos you know people are about to rush to the floor!! Pete has nailed a "calm before the storm" track that DJ's should lap up. This is the unsung hero of your set that tirelessly works for the team so the strikers can score and get all the credit" - Cosmic Groove Transmission (Brique Rouge, 2020).

Larionov & St Theodore - "Infinity Abyss" (5:22)
St Theodore - "Cursed Dreams" (7:21)
Review: They say that the third time's a charm and that is certainly the case here as Larionov & St. Theodore link up for their third collaborative EP. The last two years have seen them impress on Rotterdam Electronix and Snuff Cuts and now it is Craigie Knowles who comes calling. As ever these tracks make extensive use of the Roland SH-101 and TR-808, which lends a cold, futurism feeling to the jack hammer electro they produce. The bass is thunderous, the synths are strobe lit, the whole thing a sensory firing excursion to the edges of an electro wonder world.

Review: It's time to touch base with Errol and Alex Rita's Touching Bass here as the small but already great-sounding label hits release number eight with this fine Babylon Shuffle release. All six tracks from Last Nubian and Geneva's Sweet Fruity Brunch blend the sounds of inner city London with deep house and broken beats, starting with the party vibes of 'Call Yu Out'. 'In Da Morning/Shaka' (feat Achante) then has lithe and wispy synths shimmering over metallic broken beats with great vocals adding soul and 'Mango In Da Parish' is a b-side highlight with its beautifully delicate house drums keeping the dancefloor afloat next to jazzy flutes.

Rundr - "Senjutsu" (4:56)
Review: Meditator Music's 30th release is the second volume of their Deep Ones series. Again it taps into the best jungle and drum & bass sounds around, with four different producers offering up one tune each. There are healthy servings of 90s nostalgia throughout but also plenty of fresh ideas. Lavery's 'Shadwell Shuffle' pairs thrilling, floating drum work with celestial pads for a super suspensory sound. Duburban's 'Inferiority Complex' keeps up the silky, punchy drums and low-slung bass vibes, this time with angelic vocals adding extras sweetness. Subreachers's 'Paradise Junction' manages to be both emotive and spiritual yet visceral for the way the kinetic drums and floating synths and vocal pair off before Rundr strips it back to a nice liquid roller.

Review: Scruniversal hit gold once more with this one from the label head Scruscru as well as Tony Lavurtz and DJ Pecan. This series is all about re-edits and reworks of old and rare records from Scru's friends' collections and first off is 'Pela Internet', a brilliantly sunny and percussive Brazilian number with great instrumentals and steamy Portuguese vocals. Review: Last year Berlin institution Ostgut Ton marked their ten-year anniversary with an extensive 30 track compilation housed across the width of ten 12"s and packed neatly in a rather fancy looking box set. Long since sold out, Ostgut have done the right thing by commencing a series of individual 12" reissues featuring all of the music for the label fans who missed out first time around. After Eins and Zwei, we arrive at Zehn / Drei which features a triplet of modern techno productions from four of the label's closest associates. Up top Len Faki remixes the LB Dub Corp and Function collaboration "Roller", adding a subtle few notches of intensity to the original, whilst Dave Sumner goes alone on the lead B-side track "DX3_Analog_Bass_Seq". Lastly Substance aka DJ Pete offers up "Keine Angst," a fleet-footed tribal stomper and jacking vocal samples.

Review: For their latest must-check release, Rocafort Records has dipped into the Seattle soul scene in order to showcase the sounds of two interconnected bands, both of which are directed by (and feature performances from) trumpeter Joel Ricci, bassist Joel Gray and saxophonist Art Brown. On the A-side, the L.B's deliver a brilliantly infectious, percussive, funky and horn-heavy cover of Willie Bobo's rare groove classic 'Broasted or Fried'. It sounds like it was recorded live at an electric, energy-charged session - as if you're eves dropping on an intimate backyard funk gig. Equally as potent - if a little deeper, slower and more solo-laden - is the South Path Ensemble's impressive flipside, 'Stop Tryin'.

Yakine - "Bubazul" (7:46)
Review: Calling upon a strong contingent of contemporary house innovators, London's Half Baked crew make the leap to a vinyl-only release in utterly fine style. Le Loup steps up first with a cleanly delineated groover that calls upon a lilting string hook and crisp drums to tap into a forgotten well of micro house imagination. It's a vibe carried through each of the tracks on the record in different twists, with Ordell coming up trumps with a woozy, squinting meander into detuned hum and slackjawed rhythm. Seuil is in an equally downtempo mood on "Teoparti", throwing in plenty of brushed cymbals and tricksy percussion without ever sounding overly busy, while Yakine takes a slightly snappier stance with cheeky Rhodes stabs and a prim shuffle to get early doors heads bobbing.

First up, Frenchman in London Arnaud Le Texier (who you'd know of from his seminal mid noughties imprint multi.vitamins) appears first on the A side. This one welcomes Lea Lisa with her track 'Conversation Between Us' (Heide Club Mix) which is straight up underground house for the heads. Then comes an unreleased Javonntte remix of Evenn's 'One For Love' that pairs things back to raw dub essentials. Dan Only's 'Love Saturates' then gets a fine and formerly unreleased remix by Italy's Black Loops that has pristine drum programming and a fine bassline. Add in Sean Roman's jazzy dancer 'Sir William' and Jamn Ensemble's 'Convection' and you have a timeless house EP.

Review: BM Muzik drop their first 12" after an initial string of digital-only releases and it's a collaborative effort by five handsomely handpicked remixers, all of them rewiring the "I Am With You" club nugget by Eddie Leader, Chez Damier, Tomson, Siler & Dima and Thomas Zander. Tomson comes in on the attack with his hard-hitting, chord-heavy dub version; Jorge Caiado injects a minimalistic edge to his cut; Djebali's instrumental dub is pure class as the man leaves in the original's glorious and memorable main hook; Garrett David and Michael Serafini drop a touch of swing on their dusty house rework - class

Jeremy Santiago FTL - "Tech Head" (6:32)
Review: Jovonn's classy Body N'Deep label brings more joy to deep house lovers here with a third volume of its various artists series. It is a case of timeless, US-inspired house tackle all the way with Eddie Leader's opener 'Step Up' constructed from choppy house drums and insistent chord stabs. St David brings some sax-led joy with 'The Dark Past' which is upbeat New Jersey style four-four before DJ Spen & Soulfuledge sink into a lush, silky and soulful sound on 'Ascension'. Jeremy Santiago rounds things out with a steamy and intense house sound for the back room with 'FTL Tech Head.'

Leaves - "Alley 4" (Iron Curtis edit) (5:57)
Tom Joyce - "Roland In Space" (5:06)
Stojche - "Subway Stress" (5:51)
Ben Cohen - "Time Is Destiny" (5:40)
Review: Tom Joyce's, Paris-based Sounds Benefit came through last year, and we're glad to see the label back and healthier than before thanks to the addition of two new names to the catalogue; oh, and there's an opening remix by German deep house stalwart Iron Curtis, a bouncy, penetrative version of Leaves' "Alley 4". That tidy lil' banger is followed by Tom Joyce's own "Roland In Space", an electro-leaning firebomb that wouldn't sound out of place in the middle of a DJ Stingray set, but things take a different turn on the flip. Newcomer Stojche bursts through the place with the high-tech, late-night synth melter that is "Subway Stress", and "Time Is Destiny" by Ben Cohen goes for a rugged, hybrid kind of techno sound that is supported by a menacing bubble of low frequencies. SICK TIP.

Christopher Ledger & Pressure Point - "Astral Corp" (9:09)

Sublee - "Parausted" (8:13)
Review: It has been four years since the last edition of Meander's Family Jubilee series, with the third edition here featuring once again the creme de la creme of current minimal tech house producers - all curated by label chief DeWalta. Much lauded Italian producer Christopher Ledger and fellow countryman Pressure Point (aka D:fferent Place) look after the A side of the release with the low slung epic 'Astral Corp' which will mesmerise you with its rich tapestry of ethereal elements that play centre stage to a backdrop of Mike Parker style bass whirrs and broken beats. Over on the flip, ascendant hero of the Rominimal scene Pirvu serves up something less darker than usual on the afterhours shuffle of 'Ostinato' and, similarly, label staple Sublee delivers something out of the ordinary on the lush ambient house epic 'Parausted'.

The Trammps - "I've Gotta Stand Up" (Dave Lee Garage City mix)
Celestial Being & Citizens Of The World Choir - "Raise The Vibration" (Crackazat club mix)
Soul Dhamma - "Flower" (Dave's Boogified mix)
Review: Vintage house and disco don Dave Lee knows a thing or two about serving up irresistible and timeless cuts and that's what he does here with the 24th instalment of the long-running Attack The Dancefloor series on his own Z Records. The man himself kicks off with Maurissa Rose on the loosely chugging, deep and soulful 'Open Me Up' (a first taste of the upcoming album together). He then slips into US garage style with his popular remix of The Trammps' 'I've Gotta Stand Up' that harks back to the glory days of 90s Soulful House. Felix Buxton's Celestial Being & Citizens Of The World Choir's 'Raise The Vibration' gets a gloriously sunny and positive Crackazat club mix before Lee closes the release with squelching synth in the form of his Boogified mix of Soul Dhamma's classic 'Flower.'

Review: The Seasons Limited label strikes back with another deeper-than-deep gem from Lefunken (Deepa, Spacekat). This is a truedeep house classic, with all the right ingredients in place uplifting, soulful female vocals, tight instrumentation and a chunky drum and a fat bassline. Main vocal mix holds it down on the A-side, while the B-side features an energetic dub and bonus beats. A must-have for fans of Soulshine, Sole Channel, Blaze, King Street, etc.

Spacedocker - "Kick In The Door"
Review: Uncompromising sounds abound on Jigsore once again. Fusing amens, IDM, gabba and jungle, not one of the four tracks on this disturbing-but-distinctive EP lets up for one nanosecond. As its name suggests, Lemon Drizlay Crew's "Killa Bees" is a true stinger with chops and cuts so ruthless it'll slice your ear if you listen too closely. DJ Osh Kosh and Ritorto's "M-Kat" is more a jungle influenced affair with sonorous hollow subs and madcap ragga vox thrown in for good measure. Jakub23's "My Eyes Hurt" is glitch gabba heaven while Spacedocker's "Kick In The Door" is more your heads down hardcore techno affair. If you've got a free party coming up, you'd be a total nincompoop not to take this with you.

Review: Adam Beyer's all conquering Drumcode label has kept big rooms banging for decades now. The latest artists to step up to tweak the hugely successful formula are Alex Lentini and Stomp Boxx. hey pair up on four fresh cuts that right from the off show some nice invention, with fizzing textures and wooden, block beats defining 'Solstice.' 'Split The Noise' is all about those big, panel beaten techno drum loops and 'Azimuth' surges forwards on waves of static electricity with some neat synth bubbles hidden within. 'Equimulate' closes out one of the better Drumcode EPs for some time.

Cezar - "Dancin' & Feel Good" (7:32)
Review: After two years, Samosa Records has finally delivered a sequel to its' popular 2019 mini-compilation Italian Disco Machine. Like its' predecessor, this second volume offers a mixture of tooled-up, club-focused re-edits and heavy disco-house jams. First up label co-owner Les Inferno adds crunchy house drums to a warming, steadily rising 1970s disco gem ('Boogie Bones'), before Shamako delivers a superb rearrangement of a luscious, synth-sporting slab of grandiose orchestral disco ('I Like To Love'). MB Edit's 'All Night' is bumpin' disco-house take on a celebratory disco number rich in mazy solos, crisp guitars and squelchy bass, while Cezar's 'Dancin' and Feel Good' is a lolloping, Popular People's Front style revision of a kaleidoscopic, P-funk-fuelled boogie workout.

Review: Rising duo LF System is a Scottish production duo consisting of Conor Larkman and Sean Finnigan. They provided the definitive funky house summer anthem last year called 'Afraid To Feel' which samples the 1979 song from American funk group Silk, 'I Can't Stop' (Turning You On). This version is a much appreciated extended mix with a DJ friendly intro. Over on the flip, they pay credit to the original with the MM edit of this absolutely sensual number, that still holds its own to this day some 43 years on.
