Family Jubilee III
Family Jubilee III (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 0302. Rel: 27 May 21
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Cristi Cons - "For No Reason" (7:38)
  2. Topper - "Bell Without A Cow" (7:08)
  3. DeWalta - "Estromanium" (10:00)
Review: Meander has been one of minimal and tech houses most vital labels over the years. It has remained low key but high quality and now gets a big selection of names to continue to this third edition of their Family Jubilee series. First up is the master minimalist and cult hero Christi Cons. 'For No Reason' is a lush symphony of starry-eyed synths and crispy tech drums that bring real class to the dance floor. Topper's 'Bell Without A Cow' is a more whacked out, dreamy number that draws you into its waify pads and skeletal drums and keeps you there. 'Estromanium' is a typically tight and kinetic closer from DeWalta.

Family Jubilee III (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 0301. Rel: 23 Jun 21
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Christopher Ledger & Pressure Point - "Astral Corp" (9:09)
  2. Pirvu - "Ostinato" (7:26)
  3. Sublee - "Parausted" (8:13)
Review: It has been four years since the last edition of Meander's Family Jubilee series, with the third edition here featuring once again the creme de la creme of current minimal tech house producers - all curated by label chief DeWalta. Much lauded Italian producer Christopher Ledger and fellow countryman Pressure Point (aka D:fferent Place) look after the A side of the release with the low slung epic 'Astral Corp' which will mesmerise you with its rich tapestry of ethereal elements that play centre stage to a backdrop of Mike Parker style bass whirrs and broken beats. Over on the flip, ascendant hero of the Rominimal scene Pirvu serves up something less darker than usual on the afterhours shuffle of 'Ostinato' and, similarly, label staple Sublee delivers something out of the ordinary on the lush ambient house epic 'Parausted'.

Entre Acte
Entre Acte (limited 180 gram clear vinyl LP)
Cat: MEANDER 028PI. Rel: 16 Oct 19
  1. Entre-Acte (10:43)
  2. Towaknos Carpet (10:02)
  3. Epic Feelings (4:44)
  4. CAT Track (4:15)
  5. Ijsselzand (4:47)
  6. Marche D'Instrumentalique (2:30)
Review: Dutch minimal techno hero Koos "Ion" Ludwig teams up with multi-instrumentalist Twan Sallaerts to present a collection of experimental and electro acoustic ambient journeys on this one for Berlin-based label Meander's Horizon Pi Series. Ludwig's singular sound is recognised by his penchant for all things esoteric and hypnotic, and although this is a non-dancefloor affair he still manages to channel that aesthetic into this collection of tracks, by way of Sallaerts' competent classical know-how on "Entre-Acte". The title track's mesmerising use of sparse melody and disorienting pads over a slow motion / skeletal drum groove is almost just a pitched-down version of Ludwig's usual work when you think about it, while the droning tension and suspense of the atmospheric "Towaknos Carpet" is much more of a departure. Elsewhere, free jazz and film score aesthetics collide on the moody "C.A.T. Track" and the cavernous and glacial ambient textures of "Ijsselzand" only add to the many moments of introversion offered here.

1936 EP (180 gram vinyl double 12")
Cat: MEANDER 031. Rel: 21 Oct 20
Minimal/Tech House
  1. C'est La Vie Tu Joci Parsiv (8:30)
  2. 1 9 (5:01)
  3. Test (7:34)
  4. Jump C (7:15)
  5. Simpozion (9:01)
  6. Condimental (7:42)
  7. 3 6 (4:26)
Review: Berlin's Meander imprint has had a fairly quiet year in 2020, so we're happy to finally hear some new material. Further exploring Romania's fertile musical environment, it is now over to the enigmatic Pirvu, who first made a great impression with his debut on Rummenigge a couple of years back. He's since had some breakout releases on Club Guesthouse, Unanim and Understory. The EP sees the Bucharest-based producer consider the ethereal aesthetic so commonly attributed to DeWalta's label, while incorporating his usual arcane and mysterious properties into this collection of tracks. From the mystical and evocative groove minimalism of 'C'est La Vie Tu Joci Parsiv', to the rolling and hypnotic main room action of 'Simpozion' to the swing-fuelled boompty-funk of 'Condimantsl' which channels that Cabinet Records vibe of old.

Liquid State Drive
Liquid State Drive (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MEANDER 032. Rel: 16 Sep 21
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Parallel Interpol (7:37)
  2. This Is The Way (6:56)
  3. Liquid State Drive (14:18)
Review: Italian artist Topper serves up some seductive groove magic here for Meander, which is one of the most reliable and enduring minimal labels out there. His silky smooth rhythms kick off with 'Parallel Interpol' and all its icy hi hats and mysterious deep-space pads. There is a little more kick to 'Parallel Interpol,' with its militant snare work gliding over loose bass. It's a super breezy tune that captivates you without you really noticing and then comes the pic, 14 minutiae plus 'Liquid State Drive.' An ever-evolving soundscape, this one layers up distant dub chords with splashy cymbals, lose jazz drumming and a steady electric pulse for this mindless 5 am afterparties.
