Feature Cast - "Chuck Berry"
QDup Foundation - "Cosmic Soul"
Rephrase - "Get Loose"
Review: One of Good Groove's most popular releases gets an exclusive repress on clear dark blue vinyl before the label ends its run of sample based funk-outs in order to focus on original output. Catskills artist Feature Cast gets busy with a bunch of accapellas including a certain woman of the ghetto over an uptempo horn heavy funk groove. On the flip the mysterious QDUP foundation drown a cavalcade of classic hip-hop samples over a loose mid tempo bump.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

You're My Music (4:20)
Jennifer (instrumental) (3:44)
Review: Fans of QASB, Tokyo's foremost classic funk act, are in for a treat this week with two 7" hunks of high octane brass and drums business from the band issued through their regular home Soul Garden. By know you know QASB worship at the altar of prime '70s funk and what makes the band so special is the clear mastery of their art and the way their cuts are so damn danceable. Lead singer Amy A is key to horn heavy A Side "You're the Music" which has some killer breaks whilst the flipside instrumental cut sees her take a break to let the players lay down some heat.

Fly (3:51)
Jaguar (instrumental) (3:23)
Review: Amy A and her QASB cohorts come through with the second of two Soul Garden 7"s that really reaffirm their status as Tokyo's foremost exponents of the funk. QASB may be well schooled in the art of '70s funk but the lead cut here, "Fly", has a markedly more contemporary edge to it, and features some of Amy A's most powerful singing yet! As with most 45s from the band, the flip sees QASB flexing their instrumental muscles to the max on "Jaguar" a swift three minute exercise in how to rule on the horns!

Escape (Ryuhei The Man Elegant Disco re-edit) (4:18)
Escape (The Sound Of The Man re-edit) (5:08)
Review: Q.A.S.B."is a funk and soul group that formed in Tokyo in 2005 and is influenced by James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and Sly & The Family Stone. They have put out four albums before now and they can do nice smooth groovers as well as more mellow and laid back tunes for home listening. 'Escape' and 'Gotta Believe' is their latest single release from late last year now finally making its way to wax. The a-side has dazzling synths next to more organic and dusty rhythm work with funky licks leading the way and the flip is similar with its cosmic rays and nice loose limbed beats. Both have been subtly reworked here.

Escape (4:01)
Gotta Believe (4:32)
Review: Now one of Japan's longest-serving funk and soul combos, QASB has an enviable track record. In November they're due to release their fifth studio album, Candy Dream, which if this teaser single is anything to go by should be another essential set. 'Escape', which lands on a clear vinyl 45, is as sweet as they come, with A.yu'mi's bi-lingual Japanese and English vocals rising above a sweet and crunchy backing track that sits somewhere between Dayton's early '80s jazz-funk classic 'The Sound of Music' (which they audibly reference at numerous points) and breezy classic soul. B-side bonus cut 'Gotta Believe', which isn't featured on the album, is a gloriously Clavinet-heavy affair that once again features plenty of nods to vintage jazz-funk.

Will (English) (4:12)
Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Japanese funk and soul ensemble with a.yu.mi. handling lead vocals, a singer celebrated for her funky style reminiscent of James Brown but captured here in a more romantic and subdued mood here. 'Will' is a new single on Soul Garden that offers up soulful and pop-leading sounds with elegant vocals and graceful grooves backed by big band horns. Interestingly, the same tune gets served up again on the flipside, only sung in English. It neither improves nor detracts from the original but proves to be an interesting experiment for that reason.

The Mexican (part 1) (5:14)
The Mexican (part 2) (5:28)
Review: Cover versions don't come much sweeter (or respectful) than this epic two part homage to the Babe Ruth classic. Part 1 sees the Japanese funk band laying down the foundations, paying deference to the original with their own upbeat twist. Part 2, however, is where they really let loose with each instrumentalist taking lead on the solos. With Hammond-hammering and screaming horns galore, QASB have delivered something very special here.

Quadrant 77 - "Funk Weapon" (feat Mano Reza) (4:49)
Kozmik Funk - "Don't Funk Wid Us" (feat E live) (3:37)
Review: The many faces and fusions of James Reeno continue as NYC drop another white hot, super-limited 45". Concentrated funk is main message across both sides as James switches persona and hooks up with inspiring compadres along the way. "Funk Weapon" lives up to its name as Reeno's bubbling bass zips and zaps beneath some salubrious guitar work from Mano Reza. "Don't Funk Wid Us" sees him donning a trippier, more introspective funk as Kozmik Funk. Loaded with Oakland's finest E.Live on the pads and peppered with subtle talkbox tones, the message is clear: it's not a good idea to funk with these cats. Essential.

Review: Flourishes of screaming Hammond organ and a distinct 1960s feel a la Kinks dominate the A Side here on this killer 7'' from the Qualitons. Flip over for ''Margit,'' a pulsating bass-led funk instrumental with a dose of fat back drums and a tasty brass section.

Quantic feat Spanky Wilson - "When You're Through"
DJ Aeon Seven - "Funky Furious"
Review: Another sampler from the recent Modern Funk compilation, mapping the biggest players of 2007 in the funk world.
Retaining the style and ethics of original funk compositions, but giving them a new millennial twist, these 2 tracks
should see some action on the dancefloor. Kicking things off is living legend Spanky Wilson, responsible for the
anthemic cover of 'Sunshine Of Your Love', an end of night classic at clubs the world over. Hooking up with the
closest contender to James Brown's crown as 'the hardest working man in show-business' - Mr Will Holland (aka
Quantic), this is one of the finest examples of old meeting new and it works a treat! On the flip, a relative newcomer
to the funk scene, France's Aeon Seven gives us a drum heavy workout with some fat horns and fresh Hammond
thrown into the mix.

Review: For fans of the glossier ends of funk, we've got a treat here for you. Sleepers RecordZ, masterwork-makers in bringing fresh pop sheen to the new funk frontier, here welcome newly-minted German disco/funk outfit Quantize Brothers to their roster. Along with the signage comes new split single 'Life Time', a trumpetting exercise in funk and dance euphoria and a meditation on all things presentness and self-actualising. "Waiting for a lifetime" is no good, according to featuring singer Hansekind, is no good. You must grab life by the horns. On that note, this magenta 7" awaits your mitts...

Alice Russel - "Somebody's Gonna Love You" (feat Quantic)
The James Taylor Quartet - "Tough Chicken"
Review: "Somebody's Gonna Love You" is taken from Alice Russell debut album "Under The Munka Moon" and also features Quantic (Probably the most talented and prolific artists in the world of alternative dance music today). On the other side James Taylor Quartet's "Tough Chicken (Part I)" is one of the band grooviest cut ever and is taken from "Message From The Godfather" on Ubiquity Records. Produced by Snowboy, this is a hard-driving B3 Hammond groove with a heavy dose of funk, soul jazz, and Modernist tinges proving that JTQ still have one foot planted firmly in the now and the other, just as firmly, somewhere south of 1970.

Review: Following the success of their first collaborative album, 2017's Curao, Will 'Quantic' Holland and Colombian "folkloric" singer-songwriter India Gongora have once more joined forces for a second joint full-length. Designed as a musical exploration of "the nostalgia of impossible love", the set's uniquely eclectic, widescreen sound joins the dots between the traditional styles of Colombia's pacific coast, cumbia, rock, string-drenched South American ballads and the kind of hard-to-pigeonhole, musically intricate productions that were once the preserve of Rotary Connection's Charles Stepney. It's a terrific album all told, with Holland conjuring up genuine musical magic and Gongora delivering some of the most stunning sounding vocals of her career.

Review: 'The Land Of Freedom' is a stunning jazz album on Geneon by Japanese 4 piece band Quasimode.
Quasimode formed in 2002 since which time they have already gained strong support in their native land. They have had releases on Freestyle Records, Inpartment and Columbia and now thanks to Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv they will also get a chance to do their thing on the European and global scene. With a mixed club and Latin feel they deliver all their music live and so represent a new breed of jazz bands who have gained a strong following with DJs and on the club circuit while all the time still thrilling live audiences.

Review: Alberts Favourites have the honour of releasing Qwalia's debut album 'Sound And Reason' this March, and what a debut it is too. The now London based quartet is lead by drummer Yusuf Ahmed and takes in inspirations from the likes of old masters and peers alike. It is a group composed of musicians who play with the likes of Joy Crooks and David Byrne, Cat Stevens and Frank Ocean and includes Tal Janes on guitars and vocals, bass from Ben Reed and Joseph Costi on keys. The sound palette is lush and rich, with spiritualism and complex grooves sweeping you off your feet.

Featuring collaborators Ernesto Marichales (percussion), Miryam Solomon (vocals), and Valeria Pozzo (violin, viola), the album expands on the success of "Sound & Reason," which was championed by Gilles Peterson and Mary Anne Hobbs. Tracks like 'Elevator Company' transform jam sessions around Tal Janes' guitar into lounge grooves with Solomon's ethereal vocals blurring ambient and improvised music. Meanwhile, 'The Spin' dives into trance-like intensity, capturing the band's energy after exhaustive recording sessions.
