Review: San Fran sorts 40 Thieves' classic cover of Hot Chocolate's 'Don't Turn It Off' first came out way back in 2008, though it has reappeared at various points since with fresh remixes. Here Permanent Vacation, who originally released it all those years ago, revisit it once more. The Bay Area collective's original mix (B2) remains a 21st century disco classic - a dub disco re-make layered with spacey synths and stylish female vocals - while the new reworks genuinely take it to different places. Session Victim deliver two rubs - a wonderfully glassy-eyed, Balearic-tinged, up-tempo deep house 'Extended Mix' and a sunset-friendly house 'Dub' - before Studio Barnhus sort Bella Boo re-imagines it as a loved-up and spacey blend of nu-disco and rolling electronic house.

Review: Almost 18 months in the making; Derry doyens Q&D return with another beautifully detailed four track edit collection that's limited to 500 presses. Alan Mooney starts with bus with less of an edit and more of a stunning lesson in samplecraft as the ghost of Jacko creeps in and out of the filters. Vincenzo De Bull ups the tempo ante with a big loopy disco house gem while Napoleon conquers any dance with an edit of a Costa Rican disco delight. Finally the whole crew wind the EP with instantly distinctive strings and a thundering diva-drenched groove. You won't be able to stop yourselves...

Review: Nine years has passed since Phil Mison's Cantoma project released 'Alive', a typically sun-soaked Balearic outing featuring contributions from Quin Luke under his alternative Bi Ji Ling alias. Mison has now decided to offer up a swathe of new reworks of the track, with his old pal Conrad McDonnell of the Idjut Boys at the controls. In typical Idjuts fashion, McDonnell delivers three wildly different variations on a theme. The A-side 'Conrad's Instrumental' version is a dreamy chunk of Latin-tinged dub disco/Balearic fusion that adds a hallucinatory shimmer to Mison's original production, while the 'Conrad's D&B Mix' is a killer, Idjuts-style drum dub built around bass, percussion and effects aplenty. Arguably best of all though is the 'Vacant Lot' remix, a dreamy, spaced-out, stretched-out chunk of wayward early morning dancefloor psychedelia.

Review: Athens Of The North can usually be found honing their expert craft of unearthing nigh impossible to find disco, and reissuing it in the utmost quality. However, the work of East Coast Love Affair (Euan Fryer and Nick Moore) is deceiving, as it adopts the image of one of said reissues while actually being fully contemporary music. 'Get Down' tops up a slew of master-quality releases for the label, expropriating a vocal line from obscure Minneapolis 'lo-fi' band Quiet Storm and putting it back into an entirely new, drunk-and-high instrumental context (think lasers, whistles, funk basses, an overall hazy sound). 'Can You Deal', on the flip, lends Quiet Storm a similar treatment, albeit for a cleverly hi-lo-fi disco house treatment.

Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: A sweet reissue of an underground classic from 1982 here, bootlegged badly in recent years, but Isle of Jura does it right with this remaster by Matt Colton. Q were a one hit wonder (if you could even call them that!), responsible for "The Voice Of Q". Comprised of American producers Bruce Weeden & Michael Forte with their revolving cast of musicians - this electro funk/disco project is finally getting paid its dues. Deep, funked-up and spacey disco, complete with vocoder - it almost seems familiar! A true spirit of the times. Features a previously unreleased track on the flip, "Keep It Strong" (unreleased dub edit) which is a balearic tinged number that's equally as good.

Review: Q Lazzarus was always going to be a good fit for the cult synth and cold wave crew, Dark Entries, and so it proves here with this overdue debut. Diane Luckey was born in 1960 in New Jersey and created her iconic moniker while living in NYC's East Village. Her breakout moment came after meeting director Jonathan Demme during a 1986 snowstorm; he was captivated by her demo playing in her taxi. Their encounter led to the unforgettable inclusion of 'Goodbye Horses' in Silence of the Lambs. Despite its cult status, Luckey and collaborator William Garvey remained largely overlooked but surely that will change now as they offer up five unreleased tracks that have been newly mixed from original master tapes.

Review: Famously used in both Married To The Mob and, more poignantly, on Silence Of The Lambs, "Goodbye Horses" was Q Lazzarus's only hit and a mystery has surrounded her ever since. The subject of many reissues and versions, this is the first time it's been included with a selection of demos which add to the song's mystique as we're taken through various late 80s studio twists that teeter on the dynamics of proto-house. "Tears Of Fear" and "Transformation" add more twists to Q's tale as we're fired through a cannon of synth wave, alt-boogie and full-on, lighters-out balladry. A fantastic piece of history from Mon Amie right here.

Review: Ultimo Tango are feeling the current trance-powered moment with this killer VA split release, which opens in style with the proto-typical 1990 throbber 'That's The Choice' from Italian duo Q Words. Needle originally released the A2 track 'I.J.O.' in 1994, when the trance sound was more firmly established, but that doesn't stop this highly-desired track from happily skipping between house-minded uplift, technoid exploration as well as trancey immersion. F*O*X released 'Once More' in 1993 - another one-shot project lovingly gathered up and revived on this essential record for any Italo-trance devotees looking to avoid monumental secondhand prices.

Review: Is there any classic cut that The Reflex can't subtly improve? Over the years, he's delivered countless killer multi-track re-edits (or as he calls them, 'Re-visions') of much-loved, million-selling gems, and you can count the number of so-so tweaks on the fingers of one hand. He's done an excellent job in breathing new life into Q's wonky Italo-disco-era gem 'The Voice of Q' (side A), rightly emphasising the track's killer slap-bass and B-boy friendly groove, whilst inserting dub mix style breakdowns, builds and drops in all the right places. Over on the reverse he handles Ruth Silky Waters' lesser-known 1980 disco-funk gem 'Everybody Loves a Good Funk' (snigger), striking just the right balance between letting the song stretch its legs and showcasing the song's superb groove and high-grade instrumentation.
This is the first vinyl release on DISCOLIDAYS, a new label by remixer extraordinaire The Reflex, fully licensed from the copyrights holders, cuts remixed from the original multitrack for the very first time.

Review: Q.A.S.B."is a funk and soul group that formed in Tokyo in 2005 and is influenced by James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and Sly & The Family Stone. They have put out four albums before now and they can do nice smooth groovers as well as more mellow and laid back tunes for home listening. 'Escape' and 'Gotta Believe' is their latest single release from late last year now finally making its way to wax. The a-side has dazzling synths next to more organic and dusty rhythm work with funky licks leading the way and the flip is similar with its cosmic rays and nice loose limbed beats. Both have been subtly reworked here.

Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Tokyo-based soul group that presents danceable funky tunes and more mellow laid-back numbers, featuring strong early '70s influences. The track 'Vivalava' is taken from their fifth album Candy Dream released last year. It's veteran DJ/producer Kaoru Kawasaki's Island dub mix which takes the spotlight here, giving what already was an awesome track a nice reshape, with groove dynamics optimised for the dancefloor. The song's magnificent horns section takes centre stage much like the original, supported by Amy A's wonderful vocal. Over on the B side is a Remaster of the original.

Review: QASB's Kono Machi De single, released on Soul Garden Japan, is a vibrant blend of Japanese soul with jazz funk and city pop influences. Side-1 features the Shuya Okino edit of 'Kono Machi De Aka In This Town,' which emphasises a groovy rhythm, enhancing the track's infectious energy. Side-2, has the original version which delivers a feel-good mix of disco strings and a lively horn section, reminiscent of Taste of Honey. Written by Moritaka as a tribute to her hometown Kumamoto, the song includes a nod to Tomari River, a location tied to collaborator Yuichi Takahashi. Having the option of both versions make this 7" a great little 45 to have.

Review: The many faces and fusions of James Reeno continue as NYC drop another white hot, super-limited 45". Concentrated funk is main message across both sides as James switches persona and hooks up with inspiring compadres along the way. "Funk Weapon" lives up to its name as Reeno's bubbling bass zips and zaps beneath some salubrious guitar work from Mano Reza. "Don't Funk Wid Us" sees him donning a trippier, more introspective funk as Kozmik Funk. Loaded with Oakland's finest E.Live on the pads and peppered with subtle talkbox tones, the message is clear: it's not a good idea to funk with these cats. Essential.

Review: Longtime global groove maker and master musician Quantic rare makes a misstep. And you certainly won't find him making one on this new Selva 12" which is two tracks of big band soul. All the usual Quantic standards apply - big glossy, golden horns and wah wah guitar that brings the funk with superbly solid rhythm sections underneath both grooves. 'Theme From Selva' is a real show stopper that would mark any arrival in style and 'Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five' is then a big disco cover of Paul McCartney and Wings' track of the same name taken from their 1973 album Band on the Run.

Review: Welcome along to the fourth release of the brandnew drumpoet.comMUNITY record label out of Zurich. After achieving very nice reactions to the last releases and getting in touch with more like minded peeps we are all very proud to introduce you to our latest signing. It's been delivered by an old friend from Geneva who goes by the name Laneq and features for his release on DPC the alias Quarion. Laneq released various tracks already and is an open-minded music lover. His collaboration with Snax was released in spring on Get Physical and earned much attention from the DJ-elite. He also released some tracks on Mental Groove and A Few Among Others. As Enterplay he is producing techno orientated music with Rosario from Geneva and Japanese DJ Kent from Forces of Nature. His other big passion is hip hop where he teams up with various MCs to provide funky and crisp MPC beats. As you can see he's a really busy man. Beside all his production activities he is also an excellent DJ and this is also the reason how this single came along, by inviting him to come and drop a set at my monthly club night "loud minority". I told him about the idea behind our label and proposed him to send us some simple but dancefloor-orientated tracks. When Ron Shiller and myself heard the tracks we were blown away. Karasu made also all our mates happy and it became a big tune among Lexx/Kawabata, Kalabrese, Àme and Dixon. It is a very uplifting and at the same time very deep tune with a nice boogie beat and an almost trancey lead. On "Play Your Part" he goes more minimal and creates a subtle but very funky tune in a cool NY vibe. By playing 'Karasu' in clubs or hearing it when my friends played it, I realised how efficient it is and especially how euphoric it works on people, it's a dance monster with a spiritual theme and yeah, it kind of makes you get higher. There are many other things that I could say about this record but there's nothing better than listening to it yourself. So I hope you enjoy it as much as we do and thank you for your time. Review: The experimental partnership between Mark E and Stuart Hobbs (who met and hatched this plan, as Leng legend would have it, at the school gates waiting for their daughters to come out of class), Quarry Hallow is an exercise in vintage kit and straight up formula-free cosmic jamming. Only savouring the first takes, when the ideas are still fresh and rough and exciting, this is the result; a fuzzy, free-spirited, collection of psychedelic jams that meander and stroll unhurried and unlimited from the Amazonian synth pads of "The Path Of Tranquility" to the luscious swoons of "Long Slide". Let's hope there are plenty more to come.

Review: Florence-based producer Quasar was quietly slipping out some gems back in 2017, both as digi-only files and with one 12" on the self-steered Quasar White label. Now the mysterious project returns with some more deep house heat that takes a classic sample-a-delic approach to the craft - all hazy funk loops and a dreamy finish to suit long, sunny sessions under blue Tuscan skies. From the sultry horns of "Track 1" to the catchy vocal n' piano hooks on "Track 2", this is classically crafted deep house that should appeal to fans of Max Graef and Jitterbug alike.

Review: With big links to Giles P and the Soil & Pimp crew, Quasimode need no introduction. Fresh off touring their Magic Ensemble LP they're back with four brand new jazz workouts. Polished and primed with their trademark power-lounge flavour, each cut sizzles with off-beat soul and swinging grooves. "Summer Madness" freaks gently like a polite Fatback Band demo. "Give It Up Turn It Loose" rides with more of a boogie groove. "Los Conquistadores Chocolate" is the most purist jazz number of the set with epic vibraphone walks and endless weaves of heady percussion. "Slow Motion" ends on a jazz-pop note with some of the sweetest harmonies they've ever put to wax. A true delight!

Review: Derry groove enthusiasts Queen & Disco don't release as much as you'd like them to. But when they do, it's always worth a spin. Here we find them in full edit mode with two great selections; first up the big bassline licks on the strong strut factor of King Tutt's "You've Got Me Hung Up". Famously one of the rarest disco records on the planet (having changed hands for over 1000 quid in the past), the Q&D boys pay full respect with their upbeat take. Flip to the B and say hello to "No Goodbyes", a big old loopy disco jam that thrusts Curtis' famous falsettos slap bang in the centre of the dance. You won't want to say goodbye to this 12". Don't leave it so long next time Queen & Disco!

Review: Derry boys Queen & Disco return for a third outing on their eponymous label, serving up two gently straightened out edits tweaked for peak-time plays. On the A-side you'll find the rising strings, rich orchestration and celebratory vocals of "Let's Go All The Way", a guitar solo-laden disco bumper tailor made for party-starting fun. Arguably even better is "Just Be Yourself", a high-octane disco thumper that's a little more loopy and house-friendly in construction. It sits somewhere between the thumping loop jams of Soundstream, the riotously camp thrust of Sylvester, and the "drum machine added" edit thrills of Boogie Cafe boss man Jimmy The Twin.

Review: Let There Be House welcome Queen B and Lee Wilson for a big and soulful new single here that spans all eras of house music. The six-minute 'Nobody Else,' is built on a knotted bassline that never lets up. The silky drums call to mind Kings of Tomorrow and the timeless diva vocal up top is never going to age. It's a feel-good tune with plenty of colourful xylophone melodies.
