Sarufaromeo & Papaverhof - "Acid Nihonshu" (5:18)
G303 - "Live Long & Prosper" (5:07)
Paul Renard - "SO36" (5:23)
Review: Acid Sessions Vol. 3 is another white-knuckle journey into the world of acid with five top talents in the field all pushing their own limits. Acidulant opens with "Serpentacid' featuring hypnotic 303 grooves and relentless energy, then Sarufaromeo & Papaverhof deliver 'Acid Nihonshu' which blends atmospheric depth with chaotic acid vibes. G303 takes you beyond with 'Live Long and Prosper,' an interstellar anthem filled with cosmic acid and resonant grooves. Paul Renard closes with 'SO36' which is all about the fat rhythms and powerful dancefloor drive. Long live acid is what we say.

Futurismo (5:34)
Review: The Danza Nativa label is fresh off the back of a fine fifth birthday celebratory 2 part compilation but wastes no time getting back to business. Alderaan is the man in charge with his second for the label and 'Transition' kicks off with some mad LFO business melting your mind. Psyk remixes it into a more paired back and spooky subterranean techno prowler. With 'Vortex' there is yet more nocturnal menace with ticking hi-hats seeing rhythm as squelchy, unsettling sounds peel off the beats. 'Futurismo' closes down with a gurgling lead line and distant sci-fi sounds that complete this most futuristic EP.

Harold Alexander - "Mama Soul" (3:03)
Pretty Purdie - "Heavy Soul Slinger" (4:16)
Review: Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and his Playboys were an iconic funk group of the late 70s who had big hits with the likes of Gil Scott Heron on his seminal 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' single. A year later on the same label, Flying Dutchman, they served up the 'Heavy Soul Slinger' single which gets reissued here. It's driven by big drum breaks and funky hits, with plenty of lush chords and rolling basslines all taking you on a high class and sophisticated trip. On the a-side is Harold Alexander 's 'Mama Soul' from the same era, but with a much more experimental sound rooted in wordless ad libs and frantic flutes.

Such Is The Ordeal
Review: The first two instalments of the brand new AM/PM 12" series guarantees a level of quality to all those converts to The End. With a soon-to-be-legendary performance coming up inside the crumbling glory of the east end - the fantastic Wilton's Music Hall - alongside fellow dust botherer Janek Schaeffer, Radovan Scasascia's increasing prominence on the live circuit promises further thrills galore. Radovan continues here in the same realm as with the acclaimed 'Also' EP. The source material here still comes from a carefully selected palette of final moments and last breaths of found recordings. The arrangements let them move in and out of time, creating mesmeric chance compositions, micro-tonal disharmonies and that typical AM/PM warmth. A total of four 12" releases are scheduled building up to a CD album due for 2007. Extremely high quality as always.

Review: Danza Nativa is rightly celebrating its fifth anniversary recently and now follows up the first part of its anniversary compilation with part two, featuring tunes from across a broad spectrum. The first side delves into tribal rhythms and strident synths with Amandra keeping it stripped back and minimal and Dino Sabatini going deep and dubby on 'Danza Tribale'. Polygonia and Plants Army Revolver then set your mind free to wander among lush sound designs and captivating rhythms that head deep into a humid and futurist jungle.

Black Devil/Black Mustang - "Constantly No Respect (The Phenomena Of)"
Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

The grooves are laced with soulful vocals, churchy chords and big strings that make for grand architecture and grander feelings of joy. Mark Brickman & Yam Who? open with a vocal gem that cannot help but bring a smile, while Wayfaring Strangers pump it up a little more with some funky disco house before Platinum City get you locked in a nice loose, long legged groove that is resplendent with lush keys and big vocal turns. Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

Review: Burnski's high-quality Constant Black is back with more essential club-ready sounds. Donnie Cosmo and Pascal Benjamin step up for one side of action each. Cosmo's 'Holo Glitch' is first and pairs balmy synth work that is colourful and silky with some punchy tech drums and rolling bass that pulls you in deep. 'Echo Drift' is another lithe and lively one to get you on your toes while the groove flows and 'Airplane Mode' is another stylish mix of lush synth design and great rhythm. Review: Drei Vinyl launched back in 2023 and has slowly but surely amassed a respectable catalogue of various artists' releases. This sixth outing is the most straight-up techno offering yet and it opens with one of Spain's finest in Eduardo De La Calle. 'Deva5Vyasa' is heady and otherworld loop techno perfection with synth daubs and conscious vocals peppering the rubbery kicks. DJ Shufflemaster brings more texture to the raw, percussive madness of 'Axiom' and Tensal layers up unsettling and anxious synth murmurs with rising drum tension on 'Thermal Cycler.' Review: The all new Motive label is serving up its second 7" here and it comes in the form of a brand new tune from the great singer and musician Jerry Harris. He is best known for his famous association with the legendary Wackies label and studio and here appearing with a slightly older, more smoky tone than back in the day, he sure knows how to lay down a top line over a nice rumbling dub rhythm. Some twinkling synths add colour and on the flip the whole thing is pulled apart, slowed down and dubbed out with some mad effects.

Heavy Mental kicks off with 'Dabro', a colourful and loopy house jaunt for sunny days. Twowi's 'Metaverse' takes off to the cosmos on lithe electro rhythms with ice-cold beats and widescreen pads. Two tracks of serious strangeness: timestretched vocals and repetitious yeahs blossom between the beat-thickets of Melchior's 'Yeah X 3', while many more percussive hits and cuts and clicks and pops and booms come courtesy of Walter's B-side, 'Xvive'. This one is another collaboration, this time with Pam Amsterdam. 'Nice Town' deals with the lead singer's own battles such as "internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible." It is a delightfully snappy dance-pop ditty with great and tight synth sequences, old-school rap vocals and nice broken early electro beats. Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Review: It would be fair to say that Paris Holley is not one of the best-known purveyors of 1980s funk and soul, though the handful of releases he put out in the decade tend to be cherished by serious diggers and DJs. 1984 jam "I Choose You", which is here reissued for the first time since the '80s, is undoubtedly one of his standout moments. Hazy, super-sweet and laidback, the cut sees Holley adding his soulful, high octave tones to a blissful backing track rich in fluid piano lines, sun-kissed guitars and mazy synth lines. Arguably even better is synth-funk B-side "Punkin' Funkin", a fizzing workout that sounds like a more soulful, talkbox-free take on Zapp man Roger Troutman's trademark sound.

We get full and instrumental takes on two decidedly different variations. On the A-side you'll find the 'Slave Key' mixes, where tight, early 90s style synth stabs, dreamy chords and eyes-closed vocal snippets dance atop a chunky bassline and typically tough house drums. Over on the flip, it's all about the 'Piano Parkside' versions, a pair of brighter and more life-affirming takes in which piano stabs and solos ride a chunkier house groove and weightier bassline. All four versions sound like Parker probably recorded them early in his lengthy career, though whether he did or not remains a mystery.

His Back Channel Communications EP draws on early pioneers like Jeff Mills to lay down sleek linear grooves that voyage non-stop through the stars as mind-melting synths and melodies peel off the beats. That is the case with the opener 'Amalgamation' while 'Conspire' does the same but in even deeper fashion with rubbery drums packed together tightly and keeping the pressure high. A JX-216 remix brings a little more texture and funk and 'Enveloped' then hunkers back down into a minimal techno landscape that has the energy of a frozen tundra in the dead of night.

Paul Rudder - "Her Dream Road" (Kresy Mellonized mix) (6:46)
Review: Exploited is one of those ever-present labels that have never made big headliners or had breakout anthems, but that's probably helped it stay relevant rather than getting chewed up and spat out by the hype cycle. Label head Shir Khan is back here to present a 36th Black Jukebox EP, with Paul Rudder & Kresy serving up the tunes. Their first collab is warm Euro-centric deep house which then gets remixed by Kresy into a 'Continuum mix.' On the flip side, Rudder goes it alone with another warm, well-designed and catchy house roller in the form of 'Her Dream Road'. This time, Kresy serves up a heady Mellonized mix to close out.

Don't Touch Me (3:18)
Wake Up (3:11)
Review: Breakbeat Paradise's Toxic Funk series rolls out a ninth volume here with two more powerful cuts. These come from Paul Sitter and Crash Party who together cook up plenty of horn-lead action on 'Don't Touch Me.' It has old school bars and some retro synth work that all adds up to a full thrill funk banger. 'Wake Up' is another raw and raucous one with big rock guitars and slamming drums. A b-boy hip-hop vocal is paired with yelping female vocal samples and the crispy drums never let up. Two dynamite tracks for sure.

Review: Planet Rhythm is a highly prolific label whose quality levels never dip, all while staying true to a signature sound that is classical and fad-free. The SP Series has furthered its reputation and now hits a tenth edition with Portuguese legend and 30-year scene veteran A Paul at the helm. His opening gambit is a mental deep techno workout with prying bass precision, 'Utopia' gets more unsettled with twitchy stabs and FX and 'Hardcell' unfolds at warp speed with tightly woven layers of synth and bass. There is no let up on closer 'Constrain' which balances minimalism with sophisticated sound design for a pure deep techno trip.

Review: Pauli brings some class to this tense and effective new EP on Shoyu, a young new label that has already made some great moves with its first two releases. 'FirstH' pairs a driving ow end with some nice sparring synth work and killer bass. 'Bodyrise' is another perfectly reduced sound with effective drums, sleek cosmic synths and a rasping bassline to counterpoint the smooth pads. Add in two more blends of physical drums and emotive synth pens and you have some smart and classy cuts for knowing dancefloors.

Review: Sound Of Thunder outta France lands at release number ten here with another gorgeous slice of lovers rock on 45rpm. It features contemporary producers and vocalists Loic Paulin & The SOA offering up A-side single 'Jason White'. At less than three minutes it is the definition of short but sweet but in that time it manages to make its mark with the yearning vocals really hitting home next to nice heat-damaged organ chords and a classic reggae rhythm. On the flip, Mellowmood spins out the sounds via plenty of mixing desk tweaks on his version 'Poor Jason Dub'.

Review: The list of massive hits from the golden trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland is endless, but one of the standouts is this one from Freda Payne. It was recorded din 1969 and features a golden production touch that made it a hugely popular tune for sample-hunting producers in the hip hop world. The killer guitar hook intro is particularly popular and was most notably used by JVC Force in their 'Strong Island', tune. Now for the first time ever, the original gets pressed to 45rpm along with a never before released Tom Moulton remix.

Review: Hope & Faith Records returns with fresh new sounds here featuring the "Standing Tall Riddim," a vital production in an early 70s roots style. This release includes two vocal cuts: 'Love Can Be So Sweet' has swaggering drums and guitar plucks with a lo-fi edge and a raw, pained vocal. 'So Sour Dub' n the flip has some whimsical organic chords and plenty of organic percussion over natty rhythm and tons of echo. Lovely.

Review: Pearl steps up to make some arresting and high octane techno deliveries here via the first release from new label Koas. The Light We Chose is full of express dancefloor burners, not least the opener 'Patience'. It's a thumping techno cut with oversized hi hats and jittery low ends. 'Adrenaline' is just as raw and surging with synths peeling off the brutal drums and 'Unknown Discipline' then gets loopy and textured to lock the floor into a hypnotic sate. 'En Lo Exotico' then bangs the box with more unrelenting techno energy and two further cuts drop into slightly deeper but no less effective rhythms.

Review: This new platter captures UK dub pioneers Alpha & Omega linking up with Pensi & Iries Roots for a pair of new school dub cuts on the Livity-Ites label. The A-side 'The Signs' has mesmerising warrior leads and harmonicas that drift in and out over the yearning vocals and sleek digital synths amidst myriad effects. On the flip, 'Dub Signs' is a version with even heavier low ends and more snaking leads that are sure to hypnotise when played nice and loud on a serious system. Two crucial cuts for dub heads, whether old or new.

Review: Coco Bryce's Myor does the damage once again with new artist Pepe. Not a lot of information on Pepe is out there yet but these timeless beats give you more than enough to go on for now: 'Angels' writhes and weaves in a stark percussive ocean of ice before building up into a huge emotional wave in a similar way to Sully when he's jangling his foxiest materials. 'Birdfeed' is a little more sprightly and sun-kissed. Dreamier pads, lighter percussion but still bites hard when it needs to. Le phew!

Review: DJ Slow, JA-Jazz, and Jame Spectrum may not be household names across the world, but those who follow Pepe Deluxe seem willing to follow them to the ends of multiple sonic spectrums, and then push through into the Other Side together. The trio, better known as Finnish electronic music obscuros Pepe Deluxe, have been making beats and other pieces since around 1996, first garnering a name for themselves with an infectious combination of hip hop, breakbeat, downtempo and big beat.By 2007, when they released their third album, Spare Time Machine, the remit had changed, slightly, and was less interested in sampling, more concerned with revitalising old school music genres like psyche, baroque pop and surf rock. Freedom Flag brings us up to date, circa 2024, and it seems there's enough room for both approaches, with this two-tracker rooted in everything from trip hop to brass-topped indie.

Review: Hard techno bastion Perc has invited a bunch of peers to remix some of his own tackle for his Perc Trax label and the results are as abrasive and arresting as you might expect. 'Full Goblin (Mac Declos remix)' is a fast-paced cut with industrial decay and growling machines keeping you on edge, Peder Mannerfelt remixes 'Static' into mechanical, electro-tech loops with a jarring but beautiful harp loop up top. 'UK Style' gets a Million remix that takes the drums into overdrive and last of all is the big, brash techno throb of a Bad Boy Pete remix lit up with ravey stabs.

On the A-side comes a rare and true cut from singer-songwriter Velma Perkins, a paean for optimism in the form of 'Yes, My Goodness, Yes', which despite its affirmations only appeared as a rare and expensive B-side on her first ever 7". Review: Fresh from delivering a mid-90s progressive house and acid-inspired EP on AiMED, former Rawax contributor Alex Pervukhin makes his bow on Taste Not Waste. The Ukrainian is in fine form from the word go, opening proceedings via the classic Chicago house bass, 21st century tech-house beats, mid-90s breakbeat blasts and spacey synth riffs of 'Intergalactical'. He opts for a deeper and dreamier - but no less stargazing - sound on sumptuous early morning house shuffler 'Wright Right', before cannily combining chunky bass, enveloping pads, creepy lead lines and crispy machine drums on EP highlight 'U Kool'. He continues to swim in deep musical waters on the EP's closing track, an undeniably attractive fusion of dub house, deep house and tech-house entitled 'More Morening'.

Volume 4 presents two tracks each from Bristol-based Ben Pest and Maelstrom. Review: Paul Mudd Murphy's Claremont 56: accept no substitute. Yet more quality Balearic gems from this camp, this time courtesy of Simon Peter, who follows up last year's great Double Up EP on Silhouette Music. "Ark Of Lark" is the kind of blunted, sun-kissed, road trip soundtrack you could imagine playing in your rented Cadillac as you drive out to visit the Joshua Tee in Southern California. With its blues guitar, pan pipes, bongos and Rhodes.. you just cant go wrong. The "Layne Night Vision Mix" gets funkier and definitely a lot tougher with its buzzing synth bass being the centre of it all and the addition of a drummer's sturdy beat to give it momentum. Also on the flip is the "40 Thieves dub extension" which does exactly what it says on the cover: focusing on that rolling bassline and stripping back a few layers for a more immersive experience.

Review: Now we're talking. At the time of writing - mid-spring 2025 - Britain has been basking in the warmest March and April since the first Covid-19 lockdown, but dark skies and a cold lack of humanity are prevailing emotions. Far right, fascism, the death of creativity and the onslaught of automation are enough to leave anyone feeling like they've been locked out of the sunshine and have to fend for themselves against a torrent of chilling realities. But not all heroes wear capes. Some are just called Charles Petersohn, and they make sun-soaked, soul-inspiring, warm jazz-inflected deep house that feels born in a more natural period of Earthly evolution. In fact, it was born after time spent in South Africa, one of the global epicentres of this genre, where the producer was involved in an NGO charity project. Immediately catchy, resolutely life-affirming, and probably the grooviest thing we've had all month.

Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack (5:27)
Review: Tristan Watkins is exploring a horse-themed concept in earnest with his work as Phonopsia on his burgeoning Horse Category label. There's an inherent wonkiness to the sound on this third entry which possibly hints to the meaning behind this aesthetic, with 'Prepaternal (Paternal Revision)' leading in with some delightfully off-kilter synth action around a light and skipping house groove. 'Secrets Of The Pedal Bone' meanwhile deals in a quirky sound somewhere in the region of chiptune but with a little Ceephaxian bite, and 'Ooze' deals in some potent, dislocated techno. 'Figuring Out This Damn Jetpack' goes more explicitly towards 8-bit synth lines, but then gives them a walloping beat, making for some of the most distinctive club gear we've heard in a while.
