Review: Movements Vol.12 fills a bag of rare rhythm & blues, mod-jazz, and mid '70s funk. Launching on a note of obscure rhythm and blues from the 60s, most of the tracks heard thence were sifted from "hopelessly obscure" 7" singles; hopelessly obscure, that is, until now, when many a ravenous compilation curator seek to restore their honour. With most of the tracks doused in vocal reverb, and coming filled with oodles of commonsensical wisdom and everyday tootling advice, we segue from deepfunk to big band to mood jazz and then back to funk, the most impressive in the lattermost category having got to be the 4 Dimensions' 'Hipper Snapper' and Gus Brendel's 'Sax On The Rocks'; the instrumental side of the record is especially great.

Review: Kilo Kish has always carved her own path, ever since starting out on her musical journey over a decade ago. Review: KMD's controversial Black Bastard album from 1994 draws on the stresses of going up as a person of colour in the United States of America. It is a sophomore record full of creativity and youthful energy from the group that included the legendary MF DOOM before he became MF DOOM. Musically the album veers from the raw to the bouncy while lyrically Black consciousness is explored as viewed through young-but-experienced eyes. The album was delayed in getting a release as group member Subroc sadly passed suddenly in 1993.

Review: Mo Chara, Moglai Bap, and DJ Provai - aka Belfast's finest, Kneecap - entered the studio with producer Toddla T in the summer of 2023 and quickly decided to scrap everything they had prepared for their upcoming album. Instead, they chose to build a pub together. Nestled in a West Belfast side street, The Rutz is a community boozer where the entire neighborhood congregates. Although the pub exists only in the band's imagination, all the action on Kneecap's exhilarating debut album, Fine Art, takes place there. Like the band itself, Fine Art is fiercely intelligent, consistently hilarious and genuinely thought-provoking, its genius lying in immersing you in a world previously unrepresented in modern music. Review: Originally self-produced and released in the mid-70s by members of Kitakyushu City University's Knights, a light music club, Knights Company was a rare two-disc set that came as an LP and EP and was sold in very limited quantities. Virtually unknown even among collectors, this album combines the high-energy soul influence of James Brown with a bluesy, melodic West Coast and AOR sound. Decades later, its appeal is undiminished as it captures the youthful spirit and talent of northern Kyushu's finest. Review: It's taken a while, but finally Knxwledge has delivered the follow-up to his "official" debut album, 2015's "Hud Dreems". A concept album of sorts - the tall tale behind it being that the beats were created in 1988 by an infant version of our musical hero after he climbed inside an SP-12 sampler and mastered the machine - the set sees Knxwledge sprint through a beat-tape style assortment of short, sweet and often sublime instrumentals that make use of a variety of period samples. Given his track record, it's an impressive album, regardless whether the beats were genuinely made when he was in "Nike diapers" (as the press release amusingly claims) or not.

Review: Japanese keyboard player, singer-songwriter, music producer Mimi Izumi Kobayashi was born in Funabashi and went on to become a cult artist who released six albums, all of them in the eighties. Tropicana came in 1983 and is maybe the best known of lot and it now gets reissued on limited vinyl via Universal. It's a bright and vibrant blend of city pop, soul, disco and tropical sounds with nostalgic 80s drum sounds, hook vocals in English and Japanese and plenty of camp and catchy grooves. A real exotic wonder.

Review: Kokoroko have been on all world music lovers' radars since their very first and very impressive EP on Brownswood back in 2018. Now we are treated to an expansive and adventurous debut album on the same label that sees the group build on their great early start. Could We Be More has been preceded by new single 'We Give Thanks' and draws plenty of inspiration from the highlife and jazz sounds of West Africa, the Afrobeat and psych-funk sounds of the 70s and plenty of modern broken beat styles. Each tunes swells with emotion and evokes good times.

Review: From their early jazz roots to their pop picking party time peak via their late 70s dabbles with disco, Kool & The Gang have dominated airwaves and dancefloors en mass for over 50 years, and this is one of most comprehensive collections of their work ever curated. Obviously all the big hits are present and correct but it's the lesser spotted (but still just as floor poking) jams that really make this collection shine; the hip wriggling "Slick Superchick", the swooning mournful chord changes of "Too Hot" and the sleaziest bassline they ever laid down in the form of "Higher Plane" are but three stone cold killing examples. Good times...
