Deep House
Moabit (feat Jimi Tenor) (8:12)
Dub 5 (7:57)
Review: Two jazz house hip-swayers from Freestyle Man and Henrik Schwarz, strongmen of the style who have yet to collaborative until now. 'Moabit' comes to Mule Musiq, and features the living legend Jimi Tenor on sax on the eponymous A-side; a must for anyone seeking out an expressionist edge to their blue-noted party-starters. 'Dub 5', meanwhile, steps backwards into steam-stacked fogs and city backalleys, a dub techno take on neo-noir. An impressive exercise in style from the German pair.

Review: Jeff Goldblum is a cult movie actor, a famously likeable bloke and also a damn good jazz singer and pianist with many essential works to his name. Now he has released two new singles featuring singer, songwriter and actress Haley Reinhart. Teaming up with his long-time band, The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, for the occasion, the unlikely but accomplished pair deliver unique covers of Taylor Swift's hit 'Lover' and Loreen's 'Tattoo.' They add completely different musical perspectives to the delightful pop originals and both tunes are sure to appeal to a wide range of music lovers, not just fans of Goldblum.

Nathan Haines - "Thorne Bay Bossa" (3:35)
Jazz Juice - "Los Chicos" (3:32)
Review: New Zealand-born Nathan Haines picked up a fine reputation for his jazz playing skills as early as his teenage years. He has recorded more than a dozen albums since the mid-nineties and for this new one on Na Vitrola Brazil he takes care of a-side 'Thorne Bay Bossa' which is a heavy, piano-led jazz workout with shuffling drums and shakers. On the flip are Alain Eskinasi and Graham Lusty aka Jazz Juice for an even more energetic tune. 'Los Chicos' is built on a succulent samba beat with lead oboe, mad keys and plenty of woody percussion making you shake every bone in your body.

Review: There's no doubt that Matthew Halsall is a modern British jazz great. Like the giants of jazz who came before him, Halsall is also prolific - a creative whirlwind who releases at least one album a year without fail. His latest release, The Temple Within, is not a full-length but rather a mini album - and one composed with his latest collective of Manchester-based musicians, during improvisations and rehearsals for their weekly residency at Yes. It's an utterly lovely four-tracker all told. It sees Halsall and his contributing musicians opt for a sultry, summery sound rooted in spiritual jazz and progressive jazz, with (very) occasional nods towards deep electronic music. From start to finish, it's a thing of great beauty.

Review:
Manchester trumpet playing virtuoso and new school jazz leader Matthew Halsall is back on his own Godwana with more of his spiritual incantations. The special, limited edition, no repress 12" has two never heard before tracks in 'Joyful Spirits of the Universe' and 'Floating Island' as well as a special bonus edit, exclusive to vinyl, with beautiful artwork by Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic. As always with this artist, there sounds are soul soothing but also deeply awakening, with soaring leads and airy grooves all lifting you off your feet and taking you up into the clouds.

Upper Space
Review: On his second limited-edition CD single/mini-album of 2022, Matthew Halsall has delivered a delightful four-tracker inspired by his concerns for humankind's changing relationship with nature and the spectre of climate change. As you'd expect with such inspirations, it's a highly emotive, bittersweet and melancholic affair, with fine contributions from not only the trumpeter himself, but also flautist Matt Cliffe and harpist Maddie Herbert. For proof, check the clips of the deep, slow-burn wonder that is 'Positive Activity', the meditative 'Yogic Flying' (where subtle Indian instrumentation catches the ear), and the dream-like spirituality of 'Upper Space'. Arguably best of all though is 'Changing Earth', a delicate but seemingly hopeful chunk of spiritual jazz brilliance that's one of Halsall's most endearing compositions to date.

Review: Nestled comfortably into the cosy surroundings of his own Gondwana label, Matthew Halsall takes flight once more with a limited 12" EP of exquisite, jazz-informed musicality. As ever, the accomplished British composer, trumpeter and ban-leader knows how to balance the traditional with the experimental, sounding consistently inspired and equally immediate. Halsall's appeal lies in his ability to channel the free-flowing, impulsive energy of spiritual jazz into soothing, mellow harmonic constructions, and so this gorgeous EP unfurls in flurries of piano, flute, brushed drums and meandering bass. If you crave the warmth of acoustic instrumentation pitched to lighten the mind and take you somewhere else, this is exactly the record you need in your life.

Review: Matthew Halsall initially crafted Bright Sparkling Light as an exclusive for his 2023 EU and UK tour. He then decided to put it out on vinyl and has now put together this special Japanese Edition which features its three exquisite suites, each averaging seven to ten minutes. Halsall's affinity for hypnotic drones, tenor sax progressions intertwined with lush flute loops and evocative depictions of Newborough Forest shine through here on an album that beautifully bridges the transition from dewy morning to creeping crepuscule. It's a natural, organic soundtrack from one of jazz finest contemporary talents.

Blue Nile (8:19)
Review: Manchester's Gondwana Records, run by Matthew Halsall, has been a constant source of good vibes and inspiration. Leaning on a jazz note, most of the material is centred away from the dance floor and yet there is always plenty of movement and joyous rhythm, particularly from Halsall's appearances. Here, we have a reissue of 2015's "Journey In Satchidananda", a majestic wave of jazz flutes, seductive piano keys, in what is an altogether dreamy sort of setting, which is further evolved on the supremely euphoric waves of the unbeatable "Blue Nile". At last, some contemporary jazz on 12" that has left us blown away..!

Review: Matthew Halsall's Gondwana label serves up a real summer treat here with a new limited edition 45rpm. It is the first in what will become a series of special 7" releases with bespoke artwork from brother Daniel Halsall. First up are two personal favourites from the boss himself. 'A Badder Weather' is a deep cut groove that never lets up, with gorgeous wraps rinsing down the face of the bold pianos and soaring trumpet sounds, all finished off with some heavy double bass. 'As I Walk' (feat Josephine Oniyama) is awash with Eastern melodies and wandering grooves and finished with a pure and angelic vocal.

Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Review: Herbie Hancock has been responsible for many era-defining records over the years - "Rockit" being a particularly good example - but few of his compositions have been quite as game changing as "Chameleon". First featured on 1973 album "Head Hunters", the 15-minute epic was revolutionary in a number of ways, not least in its use of a killer 12-note bassline, "percussive" style guitar parts and loose-limbed funk beat. It remains one of the greatest jazz-funk moments of all time, as this timely reissue proves. This time round, it comes accompanied by another "Head Hunters" classic - Hancock's groovy, synth-laden re-recording of his own 1962 composition "Watermelon Man". Two stone cold classics for the price of one: what's not to like?

Review: A new 7" all the way from Japan's Urban Discos label, from a live band with roots in soul, jazz and funkFirst up is their cover of 'Give Me Your Love,' a Curtis Mayfield jam. It's an instrumental in their hands and one that has some superb guitar solos and nice drum jams under organ vamps that are warm and subdued. Seeds Of Life (feat Eddie Palmeri) (5:09)
Review: Legendary bandleader Eddie Palmieri took a rare groove excursion from his Latin legacy in the early 70s for two albums as Harlem River Drive. Criminally overlooked, Soul Brother have dusted off two of the many highlights from his self-titled debut; "Idle Hands" is a sleazy, Gaye-style message with an almost spoken word quality to the vocals and a smoky wooziness to the horns while "Seeds Of Life" is a real end-of-set belter that rises and rises with tight orchestration between the guitar, horns and drums. Incredible... This can't be slept on this time round.

Review: American jazz pianist Gene Harris first released 'Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong' and its counterpart 'Summer' in 1974, when both initially appeared on the classic soul jazz album Astral Signal. Thereafter, it enjoyed a second bout of popularity after being picked up by the trailblazing rare groove scene in London. Now for a third: Selector Series now proffer another reissue of this rare groove workout, a Latin funk gem for an age not yet properly recorded or recognised. Snappy, pugilist drums, wowwing synths and filling choral counterpoints make this a real funk treat.

Review: Detroit-born jazz musician Wendell Harrison did a lot of seminal work with the likes of Phil Ranelin and Tribe in the early part of his career, but he's also slipped out some seriously funky wares like this rare joint originally from 1982 on Wenha Records. Athens Of The North are champions of such records, picking them up, showing them some love and getting them out to a fresh audience, and so it goes on this killer 7", which flips the A and the B so Harrison's version of Stevie Wonder's 'Rocket Love' gets up front in all its groovesome glory.

As per usual, the imprint know exactly where to source the very best in the contemporary gear while everyone else is looking to the 70s for that adrenaline rush. As it turns out, this is some marvellously constructed soul music, right from the heart and soul, with "Cold Turkey Last Time" and "Trackin' Down" containing all the elements of fine ballads that are both future-proof and utterly stand-out. Magic Fly (3:06)
Review: Haze, an Exeter band that in 1981 endlessly toured the South West of England and released the album "SILVERTOPS REFLECTS HAZE" upon which many contemporary tracks were given the Haze treatment from Barry Manilow's 'I Can't Smile Without You' to Johnny Cash's 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. In the mix Azymuth's Latin funk anthem 'Jazz Carnival' and Space's legendary electronic 'Magic Fly' surfaced, the latter two of which make up this exceptional 7" release by Panorama records, this relatively new label that celebrates idiosyncratic rarities. Haze seem to like breaking down the original and making space between the beats and yet on this A side an already pumping track pumps faster with an extra electronic edge on the Moog-ish organ, whilst paradoxically Haze's lead guitarist takes on Jose Roberto Bertrami's originally syncopated keys in a more regulated way - not a bad thing if not a jazz dancer but someone who just loves to dance! Intelligently, Panorama have coupled this with Haze's percussion heavy version of 'Magic Fly' on the B side, that even if it remains more so electronic, even poppy, it nicely compliments the Brazilian homage of side A. If you love a rare version, 7" 45s and early 80s jazz funk with a synthesised edge you'll love this.

Review: While best known for their funk and soul reissues, Dynamite Cuts do frequently dig deeper and look further afield for musical inspiration. They're at it again here, offering up a lavishly packaged "45" featuring two killer cuts from Brazilian saxophonist and flautist Hector Costita's jazz-funk/jazz-fusion album 1981 (which, you guessed it, was first released in 1981). A-side 'Avessos' is warming, gentle and groovy, with Costita's jaunty sax motifs rising above a samba-jazz beat, restless triangle percussion and some seriously toasty electric piano lines. 'Divagacao' is a more up-tempo nd rhythmically interesting affair that reminded us of Azymuth while also boasting some genuinely dazzling sax solos.

Peter Herbolzheimerer (hythm Combination & Brass) - "Cherokee" (feat Dianne Reeves)
Mario Canonge - "Kon Djab Djigidi"
Review: As DJ at one of the longest running and most venerable jazz nights around, London's Messin' Around, Adrian Gibson has road-tested more than a fair share of jazzy sensations in his time. Music For Jazz Dancers distills his knowledge and experience into one vital collection of essential cuts, and it's an eye-opening and valuable resource.
Trombonist and bandleader Peter Herbolzheimer's collaboration with Dianne Reeves from 1995, "Cherokee," kicks things off with a big band flair that would undoubtedly tear up the right dance floor. Samba rhythms find a good home here too - with Mario Canonge's "Kon Djab Djigidi" and Marcos Ariel's pacey "Samba Torto" breaking out the congas in particular. In fact, much of what Gibson selects comes at a break-neck speed, which suggests the crowds at Messin' Around must have superhuman stamina. Fernando Gelbard's "Alevacolaries" in particular is blisteringly fast, driven by hand percussion, some screaming vocals and Rhodes. The combination of all these elements is fascinating and a real find. For listeners inclined toward a slightly more conventional mode of jazz though, Primo and the Groupe's "A Child Runs Free" is a perfect fusion of uptempo rhythms with smooth vocalisms and laidback piano accompaniment. Not only is this a great collection of hitherto obscure jazz, the fact that it's presented with dancing in mind makes it all the better!

Try Again (4:12)
Review: In the time that passed between their fine 2019 debut on Matsuana Records, 'Madchester Woman', and the release of their sophomore single, last year's 'Don't Sweat The Technique on Mocambo', Heroes of Limbo clearly recorded a lot of material - hence this relatively speedy sequel. Like the duo's previous material, the two tracks showcased here blur the boundaries between funk, highlife and Afrobeat. A-side 'Watch Out Now' is a languid, low-slung treat, with heavy Afrobeat horns, snaking solos, effects-laden Hammond organ and jazzy guitars reclining over a shuffling breakbeat and warming bassline. The pair gently raises the tempo and temperature on B-side cut 'Try Again', with more urgent horns and low-register sax solos weaving in and out of a more tropical-sounding rhythm track.

Be (DJ Kawsaki Re edit) (4:26)
Trinkets & Things (DJ Kawsaki Re edit) (3:58)
Review: Japan's Urban Discos label always carries the best of the country's broken beat and jazz scene, and now they're offering up two cold crushed remixes of HF International. Katsunori Hiraiwa and Seiki Fukuda's band released a self-titled album in 2010, and that's where we're headed for the source material on this 7". DJ Kawasaki is a luminary of Japan's broken beat scene who does a fine job re-editing 'Be' and 'Trinkets & Things', offering up boom bap beats and double bass flex on the A side and a distinct samba influence on the flip which will appeal to a whole host of jazz heads.
