Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Review: Russian funk alert! Following in the footsteps of fellow country funkers STiX and The Soul Surfers, DJ Anatoly Ice and veteran songstress Dariya deliver two impeccable jams that sizzle with a fuzzy air of 60s nostalgia. Dariya's vocal delivery is crisp, clear and decidedly sexy as she dips into her mother tongue for very brief respites. With punctuated pianos, big swinging drums and a horn ensemble that's tighter than an austerity budget, this is an exemplary lesson in funk.

Review: It's been almost four years since we last heard from Anatoly Ice and Dariya, and we were beginning to miss the duo's magnetic waves of seductive nu-soul. Backed by a gentle sway of breakbeats, "Freedom (Unchained)" is the sort of tune that will have cross-cultural appeal, drawing in influences from pop, r&b, and even a little country love. On the flip, Mr Confuse twists the groove up to transform the original into more of a light-hearted house swelter, backed by the original's suave vocals.

Review: Azeem and Myka Nyne flow fluidly together over the first beat of this 12". Myka Nyne, best known for his membership in Freestyle Fellowship, has been deeply involved in the both the New York, and Los Angeles hip-hop scenes for years, where his solo career continues to flourish. Azeem and Myka Nyne are a natural one/two punch on "Basic Maneuvers" - trading verses then unifying to flip the hook. Supported by raw beats and rhythmic fuel, DJ Zeph and Azeem light up "The Fire" on the b-side. "The Man That Said No" was a follow up to Bettye's breakthrough smash "Don't Wait Too Long". The limited success at the time has driven recent sales high, making this 45" appeal to collectors instantly. Dig deeper for Bobby's super-slamming R&B jam "I'll Be A Soldier Boy". Its debut vinyl appearance, this nods effectively at the northern soul anthem "Too Much For You". Further on we experience doo-wop delight with The M&Ms & The Peanuts' debut single "Lil Valley" before fast-forwarding to the early 70s with the lavish soul of Moore's "I'll Just Walk Away". Review: Remastered from a lost cassette in composer David Toop's archive, Unsettled Scores Records has secured the rights to a first-ever release of the legendary title track from Dick Fontaine's iconic 1988 graffiti documentary. Originally airing on Channel 4, the film followed Brim's 1985 journey from the Bronx to the UK, where he linked up with future icons like Goldie and 3D of Massive Attack. A formative piece for graffiti writers and hip-hop heads alike, Brim's 'Bombin'' became a cult classic and remained so. This long-awaited 7" includes the full version and unreleased mixes.

Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

Review: Cash Money Experience are soul dons and if you need proof listen no further than this new 7". Darryl Howard is the vocalist and songwriter of Nu'rons and here he offers up the lead vocals while Emanuel Campbell, who is one of his co-members in Nu'rons, is responsible for the lyrics. On the extended version of 'Outside Looking In' the vocals convey plenty of pain on nice laidback drums and funky riffs. The Full Radio Edit distils things to a shorter play length but is just as effective.

Review: After the March drop of this record caused quite the stir, the label is now back with a limited edition white vinyl version to make it all the more vital an addition to your shelves. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo and their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full-length album from 2019. It is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure to reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. A classy party starter, for sure.

Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Review: Two of the more requested and strongest tracks make themselves available on this 12" single from D-Tension's "Contacts and Contracts II". The A-Side features Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks) and Outerspace following up their huge selling Army Of The Pharaohs "The Torture Papers" release with the outstanding "Pretty Little Whores". Nothing pretty here however as Paz, Planet and Crypt rip that gutta slang over crazy strings, slick guitars and a haunting chorus courtesy of D-Tiddy. Review: Qu'ran Goodman, Taji Goodman and Tarik Dawson are Da Youngsta's, a hardcore hip hop outfit active from 1992 and central to the genre's development through the nineties, most often on EastWest Records America. 'Be Great' is a brand new 2020 single that has lush piano work bringing warmth and soul, and slow motion, gently rotating and spacious drums sinking you into a stoned groove. Review: 5 Borough Breaks is back with more of that red hot dancefloor heat in hip-hop form with another couple of gems. The one kick off with Da Youngstas and the second single from their debut album in 1992. 'Pass The Mic' rides on crisp boom bap drums with big horns and some mad speedy mic work. On the flip, as is always with way with this series, is the sample source - namely Lou Donaldson's 'Pot Belly' from his 1970 album Pretty Things. It's a nice smooth jazz number with Rhodes chords warming it through and gently tumbling rhythms from Idris Muhammad on drums.

Review: Hit makes of the 20th and 21st Century don't come much bigger or more accomplished than French electronic innovators Daft Punk and irresistible hook-writing machine Pharrell Williams. When they got together to make music it was always going to give rise to monster hits and so it proved. Whoever you are, 'Get Lucky' cannot fail to get you singing along and swinging those hips. The Chic-style bass riffs, the smooth and catchy vocal from Williams and the effortless groove are all timeless. That one is backed with 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' another Daft Punk classic from their earlier period but that is no less potent today.

Review: Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has described Willie Dale's "Let Your Light Shine" as "one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years". Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

Review: Damon Garrett Riddick offered a fine addition to the DJ Kicks canon with his 19 track DaM-Funk selection earlier this and in time honoured tradition his exclusive contribution gets a vinyl release backed with a rather special remix. In a nod to his cache and love of classic deep house, Riddick has coaxed a Mr Fingers remix out of Larry Heard resulting in a sublime take on "Believer" that would have gone down a treat at Broken Beat haven Co-Op back in the day. Review: Dancefloor Stompers was formed in Sardinia in 2009. They are a talented group of musicians who have a big love of mod jazz, black music roots and Italian soundtracks and library music classics from the 50s through to the 80s and all of that influences this new EP, Phuture Soul. Recorded and mixed at Solid Twin Studio between May 2021 and January 2022, it kick off with the title track which pairs rock guitars with funky basslines. 'Catch This Train' has a more playful pop-rock feel with big horns, 'Glass Tears' is a smoother groove and 'Not In My Name' closes on a more downbeat note.

Review: With the passing of William Daron Pulliam last year, the music world truly lost a singular and unique talent. Here Californian soul daddies Ubiquity pay homage to his most recognised works "Didn't I See" with a limited edit-focused 12". There is of course the feeling one shouldn't mess with perfection - and this Darondo track certainly falls into that category - but each of the three edits that accompany the original are considered reworks that subtly add some extra character without losing any of its power to move. Kinjo Music founder Dave Allison perhaps excels the most in this regard, subtly nudging the tempo up and adding some extra percussive detail that soul selectors will appreciate.

Review: The exact backstory of this one is hard to pin down but suffice it to say if you haven't heard Darondo's 'Didn't I' before then as soon as you do you will fall in love. It has previously been released on a 7" entitled 'Edits' by Stefan Trischler aka Trishes back in 2010 but with a different B-side. Here it comes on TLM with a 1773 remix on the flip. The original is a hard-ass funk cut with raw and tough drums and splintered hi-hats all topped off with the aching and soulful vocal sample and some distant lavish strings. The flip side version features Cerebral Vortex and has extra bars that add a hip-hop touch.

Review: Daru is a hip-hop producer from Michigan, and also drummer for Slum Village and Dwele and has produced for the likes of Tableek
(Maspyke) and Ab (Slum Village). Reggie B. is a singer/songwriter from California who did collabs with Saadiq and Wajeed of the
Platinum Pied Pipers. They join forces and come with their debut album for 4lux Recordings called 'Future Music'. This is a sampler 12"

Review: Daru returns with his second EP for 4Lux, 'Turn It On', a real value-for-money eight-track excursion. The Michigan producer makes beats as raw as Madlib and as dope as Japan's Mitsu, and this time he's joined by singer/songwriter Rena, whose influences range from Sade to Tracey Chapman. Here she winds all up in one and creates a new unique set of flavas. 'Turn It On' is a delicate and sultry song in two versions : the original is a real headnodder with its boom/clap beats while Part 2 has a more experimental feel to it. 'Things You Do' is a soulstepper in a similar style to Georgia Anne Muldrow's 'Stones Throw' output. 'Spirit Dilla Pt. 3' is a tribute to the late J-Dilla, taking one of his beats and re-touching it with a beautiful vocal vibe. Elsewhere 'Lonely Nights' is great for the dancefloor, 'You Pt. 2' is a dope soul tune with eerie piano samples and gazing vocals, and 'Feel The Love' is pure hip hop beats with scratches by DJ Eduardo Sizzahands outta Detroit. Finally, 'Excuse' is a deep instrumental tune with a boom-snap beat lending a soulful feel.

Review: Das EFX's Real Hip-Hop was an EP the group dropped in 1995, right bang in the middle of the golden era hip-hop generation. Members hailed from Brooklyn and were Andre "Drayz" Weston and Willie "Skoob" Hines who first got together at college. They are often credited with inventing the ad-lib 'diggity' and came through the ranks quickly with a fast rap style that eventually led to them going platinum before the popularity of their style led to many imitators. These are two standout tunes from that album that get the duo at their raw and early best.
