Review: Groovin Italy are the foremost label in our ranks to set their sights upon digging up and refining the very best sonic gemstones out there. Said blood diamond seam is the mythical yet plentiful vein known as deep house; here our local artisanal miners revitalise the precious contribs that especially once made splendid the faded gods of Italo house. From Italian DJ and producer Massimino Lippoli, a key figure in Italy's early house and progressive scene, to MCJ & Sima, Italian house duo, and Sima, who doubled up as vocalist and productive powerhouse, every track here is unerathed in mostly pre-polished, with the end jewellers over at Groovin needing very little work to do. David Syon's 'Swinground' closes things on a naive, part misshapen maccle, with what sound like hand-programmed brasses and pogo-synths played in above a twitchy but happy groove.

Review: It's five up for the small but already fine NRV label who welcome Me&MyDog for this one. There is a darkness to their brand of tech that is evident from the off with 'Body Move' with its stark drum hits and twist deadline, all topped with some moody vocal mutterings. 'Moonside' brings kinetic rhythms that have carefully designed percussion sprinkled over the top to bring some looseness. A login bassline keeps things firmly rooted to the floor while 'GR308L (6AM mix)' gets more trippy with some acid modulations and wispy synths all fleshing out the minimal grove.

Review: This is a mad decent debut release from veteran musical assistant Meroe "G," also known as Record Shop Roy. This original composition, 'Can't Pay Won't Pay,' was penned by A.G. Marshall and the package also features the legendary Big Youth who delivers the powerful 'Sufferers Cry' vocal in a single striking take- he manages to capture raw emotion with seemingly effortless ease. Next to him, the track boasts an impressive lineup of talent including drums from Horseman, Steven Wright aka Marley on guitar, keys from Henry Holder, saxman Richard Doswell and David Fullwood on trumpet with Paul Kelly adding percussion next to Meroe "G" on vocals and bass. This is a deep, rootsy package crafted with care and spirit that demands to be pumped loud through your best amps.

Review: The 'No Trickery' EP marks the second release of Connor Mikami's If You Know You Know and it culminates in a poignant tribute to the church that served as a vital dance music hub in Los Angeles until October 2024. 'ET' gets things underway with a gurgling mix of dark and dirty basslines and menacing synth growls. 'Church' has a more clean and serene sound with dumpy kicks and bright chord stabs that bring to mind a late-night sermon. 'Groovy G' is a jacked-up tech cut with cool swing and crispy sabre work topped off with a muted synth phrase.

Review: South Africa-born, United States-based Brendon Weller is one of dub techno's finest modern day practitioners. he has been endlessly exploring the form for years but never falls short of fresh ideas. Here he offers up his latest 12" on EchoLTD. It begins with 'Rescue Me' which is smoky, deep and atmospheric with rattling hits and chords submerging you way beneath the surface.A'YassQueen' then taps into an orignal dub ethos with rumbling bass and heady harmonica sounds floating amongst wispy pads. 'Scorching' stays fully horizontal and is a vast empty space with patient bass and drums and 'How Love Is Your Deep' ends with another heady exploration of empty space and slow motion rhythm.

Review: How many people are too many people to be in one band? The answer is certainly not ten for ten piece Melbourne funk crew Mondo Freaks, who now offer up their debut EP. This lot originally started as a concept band playing late 70s and early 80s funk classics and they have since backed luminaries like Leroy Burgess and Evelyn "Champagne" King. The band is led by session bassist Luke Hodgson and drummer Graeme Pogson and has five talented vocalists who all shine: tracks like 'Find A Way' with Jade McRae's uplifting vocals and the Harvey Sutherland remix of 'Bells Are Ringing' are particular delights. Overall though, all of these fresh funk flavours combine live instrumentation and great songwriting to create a sound that goes well beyond homage.

Review: DAYBREAKERS, a new London label dedicated to deep house in all its forms, opens with a study of Jeffrey Collins' Music Station, an imprint that helped define US dancefloors in the 90s. The EP feels like a time capsule, revealing the label's essential DNA through four carefully selected cuts. Elaine Monk's 'Something For Nothing' appears twice, its Vocal Mix exuding warmth and deep swing, while the D A.p. Dub strips it down to bare essentialsisubmerged chords and hypnotic motion. The flip explores even deeper textures. Cherie Lee's 'Love Me Or Leave Me (Club Dub)' simmers with effortless groove, its vocal ad-libs curling around crisp percussion. Review: Under the Linkwood alias, Nick Moore has released a wealth of fine material since debuting in the late 2000s - including a string of sublime albums and EPs. Last year he popped his re-edit cherry alongside The Mighty Zaf via a two-tracker paying tribute to the late, great Phil Asher. Here he takes the next step, delivering a first solo scalpel missive via the reliable and long-running Moton imprint. On side A, the Edinburgh producer attempts to 'Make It Better' via a razor-and-tape style edit of a slap-bass-sporting, synth-wielding slice of early 80s disco-boogie perfection. We have no idea of the source material, but the lightly extended track is as infectious as it is intriguing. Over on side B, 'No Easy' is a sweet, string-laden slab of mid-tempo disco-soul sweetness, while 'Brekkers' is a squelchy, up-tempo electrofunk workout tailor-made for break-dancers.

Deep House
Review: Three outsize rarities on Mr. G's very own Phoenix G imprint (operating since 1999). 'The Lost Tracks 1' hears the man-myth-legend rise from the mounded ashes of a deep house firestorm, where in classic "vaults" fashion, Mr G aka. Colin McBean presents tunes as though they were known sequels. Even so, 'Narcoticz Pt. 2' hardly recalls an original tune by the same name. It's almost as though there's a hidden universe of sound we're only tantalisingly being let in on... With G's driven but distillate deep house sound on fullest display here again, make sure to cop these muted rarities, as they're RSD exclusives and will surely dematerialise quick.

Review: Future Retro continue rebooting recent history with these repress and it's great to see the demand for high grade timeless jungle music. Especially this one. The enigmatic Mr Sensei and the bossman himself go toe-to-toe on two very different breakbeat workouts. 'Strictly Ragga' goes full foundation with a very thick subby mixdown and layers of percussion. 'FM Dial', meanwhile, goes much more contemporary. Militant cuts and hits but bags of space and sudden twists. With Kid Lib on collab duties, too, some argue it's one of the most powerful tracks FR have ever blessed us with.

Review: Urgent electro from adept producer and DJ Munir Nadir. His third outing for a new favourite label, the Italian outfit Odd One Tape, this sawtooth croaker is an especially squelchy dance record, drawing on tail ends of minimal techno and noughts electro house, and with perhaps a tad of skweee thrown in too. 'Give Me A Second' and 'Paratoxical' use conspicuous reverb tails and flex-gurgled vocals to spoken and spelt-out effect, while the B-side's 'Sniper' is as wilfully minimal and baleful as it gets, working in a monster of a ghostly vocal underbeat. Finally, 'Flying Ladder' rounds off on a matchingly minimal euphorizer in the 4x4 vein.

Review: Platform 23 platform the Italian 80s avant-garde and anarcho music scene on a fresh 12" compilation, kicking things off with an unreleased cover, by the band Nengue, of Los NiNos Del Parque's electro-pop-wave track 'African Beat'. Amid the political unrest of the Anni di Piombo (Years of Lead) - which saw the autonomist Marxist movement, and backdrops of government-mafiosi collusion, labour strife, and terrorist splinter group formations - underground artists found themselves transducing the radical energy of the time into rapidfire releases, put out through DIY networks. Rome's Nengue embodied this, blending industrial, jazz, and futurist influences. Initially, the release aimed to highlight their Kraftwerk-inspired African Beat, but the discovery of their cover of 'Los NiNos Del Parque', described as "powerful anarchic nonsense", became the focal point. Berlin's Bionda e Lupo contribute a remix, with Sneaker's sharp production and Sano's vocals adding a fresh dimension. Andrei Rusu (Khidja) delivers a deep, dub-heavy reinterpretation of African Beat, perfect for modern dancefloors while honoring its raw origins. A vital document of Italy's underground electronic resistance.

Review: Nicole and Troy's latest collaboration sharpens their vision for Cath Records, the Berlin-based label they launched as a home for boundary-pushing techno. Their stripped-back but potent style thrives on precision, drawing from deep club lineage while keeping an eye on the future. 'Out Of Control' is a lean, tunnelling workout, its tension amplified by Z@p, the Uruguayan producer whose percussive, swing-heavy take on techno has earned him a cult following. Review: Liverpool Dubstep Heads invite Russian artist Ninety over for some low-end fun and these four tracks are the result of their adventures. As with many of his previous tracks, Ninety errs on the side of trippy across the EP with strange off-grid flurries and psychedelic twists throughout. Highlights include the wavey sheen and sparkle of 'Rouz', the pinched staccato drama of 'Fear Suppression' and the all-out theatrical tension of the title track. Hunt and go hard!

Review: KMA60 Prozektiva's exploration of a mutant, electrified take on tech and house continues with Ocean T taking the mantle across four future-facing new cuts. The opener 'Never Enough' has steely drums that slap hard while the twisted, glistening melodies and 90s stabs bring a rave feel. 'KO' is a darker and more gritty sound with dubby low ends and vocal aspirations adding a touch of human soul. 'OBSSSD' has more old school vocals buried in a shimmering mix of synths and snappy drums and 'Been There Too Long' flips the vibe with a much more soft, rounded, warm deep house jaunt with deft vocal fragments and neon colours all making it the best of the lot.

Review: Motor City great Omar S is not just a don when it comes to programming drums and laying down his irresistible synth lines and heart aching melodies. He can also play a wide array of instruments, and in fact does just that here as he plays all instruments played you can hear across all three cuts of this new one on his FXHE label. Things kick off with the wonderful 'Featuring Omar S (instrumental)' and then 'Sayoungaty Nig' is a hazy, lo-fi ambient sound with occasional synth smears and a barely-there rhythm implied by the odd kick drum sound. 'Featuring Omar S' is a signature deep house joint with bristling metal hi-hats, rickety drums and edgy drones that keep you on edge as more soulful chords rise up through the mix.

Review: Coorreente Belgium delivers a compelling slice of modern techno with 'Interlink', a four-track compilation that dives deep into rhythmic exploration and sci-fi atmospheres. Each cut offers a unique perspective, yet together they create an excellent and cohesive experience. Orbe's 'Jaxa' kicks things off with a spacey, melodic groove. The track's sci-fi techno aesthetic is underscored by rhythmic intricacies, creating a sense of forward momentum through the cosmos. It sets the tone with a blend of dreamlike melodies and pulsing beats. 'Refraction' by PTTRNRCRRNT follows, venturing into tribal territory with creative, off-kilter rhythms. Alien-esque warning sounds weave through the mix, adding a sense of unease and mystery that keeps listeners on edge. On Side-2, Deluka's 'Axis' plunges into subterranean techno with a deep, hypnotic vibe. Elements of trance filter through crisp production, guiding the listener on a spacey, introspective journey that feels both grounded and ethereal. Jorge Flukso's 'Synaptic' closes the EP with a nod to classic underground techno. Its dynamic, brooding build recalls the raw energy of Surgeon's warehouse bangers. The track's evolving layers and relentless drive create a late-night atmosphere perfect for dark, crowded dance floors. 'Interlink' is a well-curated snapshot of techno's diverse spectrum, balancing the cerebral and the physical with finesse. If you are one that thinks techno has been over-saturated the last decade and that there is no good techno coming out anymore then I would check this EP out.

Review: Since its relaunch in 2017, Deep Jungle has been killing it by serving up previously unreleased tunes from the 90's next to represses of select rarities and new tunes in the vibe of the classic 93-96 era. Here we have Orca ensuring we all have a whale of a time (hey, hey) while lost in the precision-tooled breaks and snares, hits and lunging basslines of 'What Kind Of World.' 'Camyx' is a more trippy sound with liquid synths shimmering and raga vocals during the beatdown. 'Echoes' is a driving and physical workout with high seed loops and minimal pads.

Review: Originally released in 1972, these are the only known recordings from Tulsa soul band Outback. The A-side is an eclectic, psychedelic funk ballad with lyrics drawn from religious scripture and drawing powerful parallels to Black slavery in the U.S. They lend a deeply spiritual and socially conscious edge to the track which is potent in groove as it is message. The B-side, 'Reggie's Thang,' takes a different turn and is a raw, psychedelic instrumental showcasing the band's musical range and experimental edge. Together, these are a time machine back to powerful moments in soul and funk history, now rediscovered and sure to be appreciated all over again.

Review: Mr Banger keeps it tight and future-facing with this new offering from Oward. The opener is the title cut and it's a non-stop sound with bumping drums and bobbling rubbery bass topped with yelping vocals and scattered percussion that makes it super lively. There's a jazzy twist to 'Jardin Secret ' with its sunny strings but the busted bass and relentlessness of the dry, crisp tech drums make it a peak time bomb. On 'La Fete Du Tunnel' things get even quicker with more metallic drums and hits, bulbous bass and a speed tech house sound sweeping you offer your feet. Last of all, 'Spirit De La Fore' is a deeper cut with well-swung drums and fist-pumping energy.

Review: Neoclassic acid-from-garage movements from Peter Reilley aka. Persian, a favourite of the UK dance music scene since as long as anyone can remember. For 20 years, Reilly has gone his own way, operating in and on genre after genre, up-peggable as he is adept, blending breaks, digidub, electro, garage, house, and jungle across a repertoire of no less than 50 EPs. Though this release serves as his farewell, as Reilly formally steps back from music production, it beautifully showcases his skill in programming, with 'Questions 2' proving a sleight hand for twinging post-funk leads, and 'Questions 7' bringing unprecedented sci-fi desolations to an erstwhile jam-funky tune collection.

Review: Across five tracks, Belgium's own Phara lifts the lid on a formerly sealed jar's worth of feeling, indulging a new outlet for much of the same ideas explored his longer-standing alias In Glass. Here dub techno atmospherics riffle against the vitrine pulse of his main alias; 'Unfold' builds patiently, layering filtered pads and gently rising energy, while 'Flow' rides a rip-tidal groove and seafoamy chords. 'Wave To Wave' drifts out yonder to early techno terra firma, while 'Solitude' prefers a sixteenthy chord teething. Phara's evolution is patent - always in dialogue with his roots, yet never static.

Review: UK-based Jules von Daniken is Phase O'Matic and he takes charge of the third outing from Reheat with his typically assured hand. 'Access Denies (K9 mix)' is warped cyborg tech with gremlins in machines, gurgling acid and flat, firm drums making for a marching beat. 'Plastic Memory' has a more electro-feel to it with some snappy kick and hits retro 80s synth nostalgia. 'Recollect' is a sci-fi techno stomper with reverb-heavy bass and 'There's More Of Them Than There Is Of Us' closes with another intergalactic techno sound that comes from a distant planet with rueful pads and chugging low ends.

Review: The third in Exitus Records' lightyear spanning V/A series, we again hear six new, boundary-pushing new ones from six satellite artists of the present day Berlin techno scene. Opening chord cascade 'Figure Eight' by Pink Concrete contrasts sharply to tunnelling techno-body suite 'The Dream Of Motion' by Krow, signalling several more tuff propulsions to come: most notably Sayid K's 'No Lights', a balmy nightscape from the newcomer, where digital zaps initially double up as hi-hats.

Review: Described as "the home of unnamed beats", North Macedonia label Pirka stand out as among the few to do it in their home locale of Skopje. On their fourth release, we've a new release from fresh but soon-to-stick producer PVC, who throws three new ones at the wall on an adhesive 12", and all them happen to stick. 'Door', 'Cocai' and 'Mode Dubs' chart a slow movement from functional to textural, stimulating every kind of floor-going soma out there, from thrill-seekingly impulsive through to the restrained and cerebral.

Review: Romanian artist Mihai Pol has the honour of serving up the first outing on Griffith and brings his signature atmospheric minimalism to the fore. His sound is both organic and immersive as evidenced by 'Nineteen' with its silky synth tones and wavy, stripped-back tech beats. It has a cheeky character that is replaced by a more dreamy and whimsical feeling in 'Lazer' which has soft harmonies and bubbly pads soothing the drums. 'Little Bit' gets more gritty with a kinetic kick and hit combo and percolating bass that gets more loose and acid-tinged as it unfolds. Last of all, 'Electric Night' shuts down with classy chords from dub techno, rippling melodies that melt off to the horizon and a heady vibe that gets you thinking.

Review: Priori's 'Pareidolia' EP proved a big hit so it makes sense that the Midgar label now drops a selection of remixes of it. The hi-fidelity master Forest Drive West delivers two remixes, including one mesmerising half-time twist up of 'Hazard' and a more slow, wonderfully murky techno workout. Montreal's Maara transforms 'Memory Palace' into a dub techno delight that will have you floating above the floor while Notte Infinita adds a seductive drum & bass vibe to the title track. Last but not least, Amsterdam's Upsammy brings a typically innovative and playful touch that makes 'Glass Shards' a lively rhythmic workout.

Review: Hardcore drum & bass flavours lent an ethereal, darkside sonic twist. Welcomed to the Samuari Music shogunate for the first time ever - despite a longtime, shared presence on the scene - Pugilist, Tamen and Onyx make for a thoracic, thudding collab. Suspensory pads lock us in vial-pods of stasis on the opening 'Conquer', on which our somatic reserves end up totally vampirised by precision shellage. Scapular breaks break our kneecaps on 'ESS', which comes squared off by tweezed hats, while 'Resu' and 'Mise' go on to bloodlet a jungular jugular, with the final track meliorating the soul with its tuned 808s, sculpted distortion and pulsate, futuro-spa ambiances.

Review: Straight from the heart of Italy in 1991, Q-Base's Atmosphere EP remains a deep house masterpiece, and a prototype for modern day coinage "downtempo" at that. Made by Andrea Gemolotto and Claudio Zennaro, 'Atmospheres' provides not just atmospheres but geospheres, lithospheres, exospheres, and stratospheres of sound, arresting the full potential of the frequency spectrum between its languorous and unhurried beats. Review: Unusually adept, jazzdancey sonic handicraft from new Rekids signee, Quiet Village. If we at Juno could issue some kind of official rosette or emblem for 'wicked production skills'- on par with a master builder's sextant-engraved headstone - then we'd award Quiet Village with one such memento in a heartbeat. 'Reunion', pressed onto vinyl for the first time here, hears a loose yet effortlessly rhythmic drum break furl, dance about a smooth, nighttime jazz progression for sax and piano. It's giving visions of a down-and-out PI in an 80s neo-noir/romantic drama genre fusion, except this protagonist has just tuned into Rinse FM for the first time - and Rinse FM, in this alternate reality, exists in the 80s. The 'Reprise' version is equally as evocative, sans-ing the drums to allow space to listen to just the melodics, just the overarching ambiences. It's as if Quiet Village know that the true force of the tune, its essence, rests in the core mystique of the aforementioned instrumental combo; the ghost of the drums may continue to play back only in our minds, yet we continue to dance.

Review: We don't know anything about R&C, but they do not do anything in a hurry, whoever they may be. The artist's self-titled label was birthed in 2021, and this is only its fifth outing. A glorious one it is too, however: 'Stars' has (we think) Italian vocals soaring in smoochy, carefree fashion over expressive Spanish guitar with modern deep, dubby drums slowly moving things on below. It's a perfect sundown sound for parties on the Med and 'Brillantina' is an edit of the classic funky and soulful disco gem 'Grease' by Barry Gibb and recorded by Frankie Valli. It's going to bring lots of fun to an open-air dance near you this summer.

Review: Rahaan is an absolute don when it comes to disco done right and with genuine soul. He's been rolling it out in original and edit form for many years and none of it ever goes out of date. Here he presents Gregory Carmouche & Cherelle Cherisoul Sullivan on the second release on the Yellow Taxi label. 'It Is What It Is' is a lovely loose jam with noodling chord work, rolling drums and magnificent vocals that bring plenty of sunshine next to playful whistles. Those vocals are more centred on the B-side opener while an instrumental remixes peels them away entirely.

Review: Two years on from his first M.A.D Edits EP, 'Rakim Redun Volume 1', Karim Sanchez once more dons the Rakim Under alias for round two. As with its predecessor, the four-track EP sees him breathe new life into lesser-known cuts from the past while adding his own samples and nostalgic musical elements. Clips of opener 'Transfer 91' were not available at the time of reviewing (too hot to handle, we assume), so we'll start with 'Gulf of Space', which sounds like a take on a turn-of-the-90s, bleep-era electro-meets-house jam underpinned by deep, heavy bass and peppered with spacey synths and sampled spoken word vocals. 'Wonderbean' is a more rubbery, elastic and energetic affair - all restless, jazzy bass, post-electro breaks and mangled vocal snippets, while 'Ko-Ko' is a tweak of what sounds like a proto-bleep electro workout.

Review: Intime Anthem is a new label that makes a suitable impressive debut here with a various artists offering that explores a leftfield disco sound. Ramozel's 'Nomentum' has deadpan indie vocals and stark mechanical drums with cold wave synths. Parker Bjoske wars monads with twisted synth modulations and slow, purposeful kicks on 'Tempo.' Naimer then switches the mood with a more playful and 80s-inspired sound, bright retro synths and euro-dance grooves on 'Wildejoe.' There is a supple acid-laced majesty to Ivaj Odnode's closer 'Atillol,' which makes this as vital as it as varied.

Review: BeAvantGarde Records have been away for a while but now makes an always-welcome return with the underground favourite that is Riccardo. He does his usual do of serving up four tracks of spaced-out invention. 'In Space' opens up with nice warped bass and insistent synth stabs with jacked-up drums and perc. 'Frequency' then has a more bright and cosmic sense of mood as the drums slow down and lull you into their hypnotic patterns. There is plenty of snap and crispy bass to 'Timeout' with its searching lead synths and gritty baseline while last of all is 'Kalapas' which cuts are loose and has ragged rhythms and textures for a more arresting vibe.

Review: Lirica Archives' latest V/A release is a veritable analogue bubblebath, welcoming the eccentrically named Rorschach Garden, Punx Soundcheck, Alternative Radio and Phunklarique to a rather wide ceramic basin. More of a jacuzzi, perhaps, 'Turn Back' and 'Neo Burlesque' are heard heating the waters from below, the latter track especially making ample use of the stereo wide to produce a well-wrung squeezing of new beat and Italo trance citruses. 'Fallout' throws us back to radiophonic instrumental synthpop by way of informatic ecstatics, marked by open source film dialogue samples. Finally, 'Saturation' soaks the EP in scrubdown wacko-FX, its janky percs and fidget steeze ensuring every area of the dance is patted dry.

Review: Berlin's Tobias Rosin aka Roseen makes a strong debut on the a.r.t.less label with four raw, club-focused tracks that channel classic Detroit techno energy. Each one delivers relentless rhythms and deep grooves, but with an all-important stripped-back sci-fi atmosphere that feels at once classic and forward-thinking. 'Re-Calibrated' is one that stands out with its broken kick patterns and shapeshifting synth filters that suspend you above the 'floor. 'Toxic Glitch' is more frenzied and 'Hyperdrive' doesn't let up either. This release also includes an endless loop and a locked groove and the X-side also features a rare 'parallel cut', a technique pioneered by Detroit legend Ron Murphy.

Review: While much of Mark Seven's work on his Parkway Rhythm label leans into the vocal end of the NYC proto-house/formative garage-house spectrum, his occasional 'Parkwerks' EPs are designed to delight those who prefer stripped-back, synth-heavy dubs of the kind released back in the day by the likes of Paul Simpson, Boyd Jarvis, Winston Jones and Timmy Regisford. Review: Two years ago, Italy's Balearic Gabba Soundsystem switched from remixing and re-editing their favourite cuts to curating compilation style EPs of similarly minded fare. They're in that mode again here, presenting a trio of cuts that combine the saucer-eyed warmth and loved-up musicality of Balearic music culture with grooves and rhythms firmly focused on the dancefloor. They begin by showcasing Wallace's sublime remix of Sewell & The Gong's 'Better Worlds', a locked-in, hypnotising fusion of semi-organic deep house grooves, new age melodic motifs and the dreamiest of ambient chords. Over on the flip they dip into slo-mo Italo-disco/acid house fusion via SIRS fine revision of My Friend Dario's 'Tell Aro', before treating us to a Pedro Bertho remix of Verdo's 'Belvourdier' in which sparkling Balearic house piano riffs, undulating acid lines and mid-80s "chorus" synth sounds rise above a fluctuating synthesiser bassline and hustling beats.
