Parita Of Blood/He Did Know How To Make An Exit (6:25)
Review: Quartet Records, in collaboration with MGM, presents a remastered 50th anniversary edition of Michael J. Lewis' score for the 1973 cult classic Theatre Of Blood, directed by Douglas Hickox. The film is a macabre British black comedy about a Shakespearean actor who is systematically humiliated by critics who consider him hammy and old-fashioned. The actor becomes a serial killer and murders every critic by emulating the sadistic crimes in Shakespeare's plays. Lewis composed a delightful score, with a catchy, charming main theme that is opposed to the brutality of the story. Contrasting strains of old-fashioned lyricism and modern soundscapes frame a score of great stylistic diversity.

Review: Edvard Graham Lewis and Mark Spybey's collaboration fuses electronic rhythms, layered field recordings and ambient soundscapes into an album with striking depth and cohesion. Both artists bring decades of experienceiLewis from Wire, Dome, He Said and Spybey from Zoviet France and Dead Voices on Air. This project, however, ventures into fresh territory, blending experimental sounds with surprising grooves and sly hooks. Crafted remotely, each track unfolds a textured sonic landscape, offering listeners a unique glimpse into the creative synergy between two pioneers of boundary-pushing music.

Radials
Radials (180 gram vinyl LP + booklet)
Cat: AI 38. Rel: 11 Oct 24
Radials (part 1) (18:55)
Radials (part 2) (22:35)
Review: For AI-38, Italian duo LF58 (Giuseppe Tillieci and Filippo Scorcucchi) present 'Radials', a live recording captured in Venice. The EP centres around a site-specific performance that translates the visual themes of the homonymous exhibition by Roman artist group Sbagliato for the 2023 Biennale Architettura. Sbagliato's installation, set within the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, explores the manipulation of architectural spaces, creating optical illusions that challenge perceptions of reality. The venue's loggia, with its five archways overlooking the Canal Grande, is a key focus, giving rise to a repeated, disorienting visual effect. LF58's sound design mirrors these concepts, using quadraphonic audio to create an immersive, spatial soundscape. Opening with the ambient noise of running water and city sounds, 'Radials' quickly shifts into more abstract territory, with shimmering frequencies and layered textures evoking the exhibition's interplay of space and perspective. The sound moves fluidly, capturing the sensation of shifting dimensions and altered realities.

Review: A Strangely Isolated Place continues to be a vital source of intrigue in the broader sense of what ambient music can be in the modern era. Here they present the debut album from Liz Qun Wong, a classically-trained cellist and composer who has been releasing and recording as Lihla for nigh-on ten years. As you might well imagine, there's a strong electro-acoustic bed to the sound on this mesmerising full-length, but one of the real distinctions with this album is Wong's storytelling, which gently rests atop the nuanced, textural compositions and guides us into some intriguing, cinematic places.

On Fractured Ground (14:00)
Skin Resonance (feat Vanessa Tomlinson) (16:39)
Review: Annea Lockwood is a pioneering New Zealand-born experimental composer who returns to Black Truffle with her third release for the label. Although she is now the handsome age of 85, Lockwood continues to explore new sound sources and collaborate with a range of performers and 'On Fractured Ground' features recordings made with Pedro Rebelo and Georgios Varoutsos while using Belfast's "peace lines" as resonant instruments that deeply evoke the dark history of the Troubles. 'Skin Resonance' is a collaboration with Vanessa Tomlinson that explores the bass drum's sonic properties while infusing them with elemental textures. Both pieces showcase Lockwood's reflective, meditative approach and make for another significant entry into her creative story.

Rime (9:54)
Review: For over 20 years, Clay Emerson and Ian Pullman aka Loess have quietly built a reputation for crafting intricate, deeply atmospheric electronica and Battens, their fifth album on Califonrian label n5MD, sees them refining their signature aestheticistill grayscale and shadowy, but now imbued with a subtle warmth. The Opener 'Strake' features layered static hums and a slow, hypnotic beat that cycles like waves against a submerged structure. 'Halyard' introduces brittle textures and crisp rhythms, evoking wind-swept landscapes. 'Crowhurst' builds tension with submerged chords and fractured percussion. The haunting 'Koepcke' carries a sense of disorientation and search for stability, while 'Endoctamb' recalls Chain Reaction's most introspective moments, yet with a looser, more organic quality. Closing with 'Rime', Battens embraces silence, with glacial melodies fading into the ether. Throughout, the duo masterfully manipulates sound and space, allowing moments of stillness to breathe between pulsing rhythms and submerged harmonies. There's an undeniable human element in how these tracks moveilike the slow, inevitable shift of nature itself. More than just an exercise in sound design, Battens is a transportive experience, cold yet comforting, stark yet alive recording.

Review: Loopsel throws a tapey curveball our way, reissuing the cassette that put their duo project on the map, this time in vinyl / digital format. The wooshing, minimal, and cold mood of this album, hailing from Gothenburg, reflects the moody production approach of the band Monokultur's Elin and Skiftande Enheter, the two artists that make it up. All sounds on this hazy-horizonned hisser formed the soundtrack for The Spiral, a 'multimedia spatial installation' by the artists Last Oblivion. Post-punky tape distortion bury swathes of radio-surfing sample and great planes of synth pad on 'The Spiral', which truly does sound like exactly that.

Review: The debut album by performer and researcher of traditional Galician music, Carme Lopez, is an experimental work for the Galician bagpipe. Drawing inspiration from composers like Eliane Radigue and Pauline Oliveros, Lopez explores the bagpipe's sonic boundaries here and creates slowly evolving soundscapes that mean you hear the instrument in all new ways. The album is structured in four movements with a prologue and epilogue and decouples the bagpipe from its traditional roots instead offering a fresh, personal approach. With sounds ranging from subtle air passages to complex drones, Quintela pays homage to Lopez's past while venturing into new, unknown musical territory. It's unusual but alluring.

Review: Via his Lord of the Isles alias and contributions to Firecracker's Mac-Talla Nan-Creag project, Neil McDonald has proved particularly good at unfurling atmospheric, melodious and immersive electronic music. While much of it has been ambient in nature, there have been fine dancefloor excursions, and on this third solo album, Subtle Thoughts, he showcases the full range of his talents. We get a mix of sparkling, spring-fresh IDM, evocative ambient soundscapes, locked-in ambient techno, his take on bleep-and-breaks ('Open Mode'), widescreen electronic epics ('Subtle Thoughts') and the kind of hard-to-pigeonhole blasts of life-affirming brilliance that mark out the work of only the most talented of producers (see 'Medhi'). His best album yet by some distance.

Review: Loscil (Scott Morgan) returns to Kranky with Lake Fire, an ambient fugue born of destruction and reinvention. Initially conceived as an all electronic-ensemble suite, most of the original compositions here were abandoned, except for the James Meager double bass collaboration 'Ash Clouds'. From the remnants of this ambitious but failed aim, Morgan reshaped and rebuilt the music, creating something entirely new from its soots. Impressions of a mountain road trip seep into the album's textures, marking personal milestones set against the eerie backdrop of wildfire smoke. The record takes its name from the strange irony that fires are often named after lakes, evoking a sense of ancient myth. The cover photos capture this moment of contemplation, taken from a rowboat near Revelstoke, BC, Canada.

Review: Loscil, the moniker of Canadian sound designer Scott Morgan, released his debut album Triple Point in 2001, now available on vinyl for the first time. An ambient dub concept album inspired by thermodynamics, Triple Point explores soundscapes that evoke the principles of heat and entropy. Tracks like 'Hydrogen' and 'Ampere' build from muted beats and looped synth melodies, creating an atmosphere that is clinical and stark. Morgan's talent for arranging sound is evident as he layers samples to produce a sense of intricate, microscopic processes. 'Pressure' and 'Vapour' show his ability to craft immersive environments, though the overall minimal approach. Fans of experimental electronic music will appreciate Loscil's meticulous sound design and the album's conceptual depth.

Review: Scott Morgan has made rather a lot of fine music over the years, and little better than his seventh album as Loscil, Coast/range/arc. Here it returns on vinyl after a nine-year absence, complete with a fresh bonus cut recorded in the same period, the Biosphere-esque arctic ambience that is 'Black Tusk (descent)'. Sonically, it fits snugly into the rest of the album, which offers the clearest distillation to date of Morgan's trademark sound. Full of beautiful, icy and slowly unfurling compositions that tend towards the meditative, the set is notable for Morgan's seemingly innate ability to craft immersive soundscapes out of a mixture of hazy drone textures, gaseous electronic chords, soft-touch melodies, atmospheric field recordings and simmering, near cinematic musical movements.

Lake Fire (7:06)
Review: Originally conceived as a suite for electronics and ensemble but then abandoned, the latest from Vancouver-based ambient producer Scott Morgan aka Loscil sees him restructure, remix and transform the ashes of it into something newian album that feels like a smouldering landscape, its textures layered with both loss and rebirth. Loscil's Lake Fire is an album born from destruction and reinvention. Thematically, Lake Fire draws inspiration from a road trip into the mountains Morgan took to mark his personal half-century milestone. eventually surrounded by wildfires and thick smoke, and that experience seeps into the album's DNA, shaping its dense, hazy atmospheres. The title itself reflects a haunting ironyiforest fires often take their names from nearby lakes, a stark juxtaposition of destruction and serenity. The album unfolds like a shifting mist. 'Spark' is dynamic and drenched in deep chords that ripple through a cloudy haze. 'Arrhythmia' carries a heavy build, swelling with intensity before receding into silence. These pieces, along with the rest of the album, feel like echoes from another worldidistant yet deeply resonant. Released on Kranky, which has long been a home and supporter of his music, Lake Fire is another great example at Morgan's ability to craft ambient soundscapes that are both vast and intimate. It's a hypnotic listen and an exploration of impermanence and transformation wrapped in a thick sonic fog.

Review: Heavyweight ambient partnerships don't come much bigger than Lawrence English and Loscil, who pool their considerable resources into this majestic album for Kranky. If you're familiar with Loscil's shimmering, sweetly synthetic sound, you'll be very happy with the grandiose blooms of undulating colour bleeding out of 'Cyan', while English's affinity for subtlety comes to the fore on 'Aqua'. The approach for the album was centred around a century-old pipe organ at the Old Museum in Brisbane, but of course there's been a lot of work done on the original sound sources. There's no great tussle between the respective artists - their sound practices merge beautifully, rendering an essential addition to both of their considerable catalogues.

Across the record, Shearer's deft touch transforms small sonic details into immersive landscapes, each piece feeling both delicate and deliberate. 'North Head' stands out as a serene and haunting meditation, its subtle shifts in texture creating a quiet sense of unease. Elsewhere, cascading tones and near-silent pauses draw the listener deeper into her auditory world. By weaving sparse instrumentation with an almost tactile approach to sound design, Shearer crafts a listening experience that is deeply introspective yet strangely inviting. This is a work that rewards patience, demanding you listen not just to the notes but to the spaces between them, offering moments of profound stillness and clarity.

Review: Raul Lovisoni and Francesco Messina's seminal LP from 1979 Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo not only introduced the world to the work of two gifted composers, but is also notable for being produced by electronic pioneer Franco Battiato. Both central figures within the Italian avant-garde, they were part of a generation of artists who contributed to a radical rethinking of musical practices and composition. They reveal Minimalism as it's rarely known: with delicate melodies, subtle harmonic interplay and incorporating diverse creative traditions - slowly giving way to an ever-expanding open space. Skirting the outer edges of ambient, new age and experimental music, the LP has a transformative beauty unlike anything else.

Review: A reissue of an early work by acclaimed avant-gardist and pioneer Alvin Lucier, 'Bird And Person Dyning' is a spoken word and musique concrete pipe dream, spanning the furthest reaches of weirdo acousmatism, phase interference, and the transmission of sound through physical objects. Both pieces on this LP explore cyborgish concepts, the first being a grotesque of the human voice, and the second exploring the idea of an electronic bird. Lucier's standing at this point in his career puts him squarely in a cohort of pioneers who emerged in the early 1960s.

Review: Lundin Oil's latest effort is nothing if not powerful and, at times, intimidating. It's also rooted in an important message. People, by nature, have a habit of deducing things about each other. Or thinking they've deduced, when in reality they've assumed and presumed. Underneath the industrial mechanisms at the centre of these soundscapes, then, there's something vulnerable and human. It's challenging stuff, but also reassuring to be back in this particular experimental fold, with Exploit Divisions the first Lundin Oil album we've had since 2016. While fitting precisely into the back catalogue, you also can't help feel that this is up there with the broadest sonic palette painted by the artist yet. Spanning razor sharp, jagged rhythms and wider, more patient ambient refrains.

Review: Dais are presenting the first vinyl edition of this 2004 album from Tor Lundvall, which was originally released as a hand-numbered CD of 955 copies on New Years Eve. Initially conceived as a delicate album of piano and electronics, Lundvall developed his ideas for Last Light into an expansive, hugely atmospheric album which captures the twilight seasons of the Northern Hemisphere in a profound manner. From faint whispers of homespun beats to moody melodic refrains and vast swathes of reverb at every turn, Lundvall draws you in close on this spellbinding record, which makes its way to wax at the perfect time of year.

Review: "The Next World Sound Series is a collection of work by contemporary sound artists working in long form instrumental composition and translated to the tangible medium of vinyl. These modern day offerings capture the analog quality and experience of last century electronic recordings, presented to you with today's technological advances in home playback, for your environmental listening pleasure." Or so say heads at the iconic and truly enigmatic label Dark Entries of this latest addition to their catalogue. A collection of work that spans the strangely frantic sci-fi tones of 'Oberenginen 0930' to the almost monastic drone of 'Soma', dubbed and muffled drums and vocals on 'Lixsm', club-ready broken beats of 'Destruct', and the evocative futurist refrains and samples of 'John Gore'. As expansive as it is exploratory and adventurous, you'll need to set aside some serious listening time for your first play here.

Review: Ideologic Organ do things their own way here with an uncompromisingly long new album Does Spring Hide Its Joy from Kali Malone. It comes as a triple LP set that cannot fail to immerse you into rich soundscapes that are aided by Stephen O'Malley on electric guitar and Lucy Railton on cello. Composer Malone herself contributes sine wave oscillators as she focuses on harmony, non-linear arrangements and intonation. It is an album of nuanced minimalism that builds on and departs from previous themes in her work to make for a stand-alone and stand-out record.
