Review: Lawrence Englsh's new album was born out of a commission by curator Jonathan Wilson to create a sound environment for the Naala Badu building at the Art Gallery of NSW. It is a deeply atmospheric album that explores the relationship between sound and architecture and reflects the building's design, with its name meaning "seeing water" in the Gadigal language. The piece was crafted with a collaborative spirit by incorporating contributions from a diverse group of artists including Amby Downs, Claire Rousay and Jim O'Rourke. The resulting composition blends ambient textures and long-form sound prompts that capture the essence of place as an evolving, subjective experience. It's a work that highlights the porous nature of sound, and as a standalone work also succeeds in sinking you in deep.

Review: Benjamin Epps sharpens his craft with L'enfant sacre de Bellevue, the successor to La grande desillusion, amounting to the second of two records to excavate the French rapper's history and personal growth through self-reflective, fine-tipped lyricism. This is a record driven by ambition and vulnerability, tracing the contours of personal struggle, pride, and purpose; Epps balances tight productions with a fierce bravado, one not considered counter to introspection or emotive soul-bearing. Epps operates with clarity and control, further solidifying his status as one of the most technically gifted voices in French hip-hop today.

Review: Eramus Hall recorded their debut, and eventually only, album in 1980; the band was allegedly named after a building in Chicago, named "Eramus Hall", that George Clinton of Parliament saw in the street. The record evolved to become one of the most sought-after of the modern soul era, despite the flashpan profile of the band itself (as were many George Clinton P-funk offshoots). This owed in part to its clarion, crystalline production, held down by Clinton himself, and which served to spell out the nascent funk, soul and r&b sound bubbling over the broth pot's lip that was Westbound Records, Detroit. Now working from the original master tapes at the iconic 54 Sound studio in Detroit, the recordings have been restored and remastered, doing justice to a convergent, then not yet defined r&b sound.

Review: In 2011, Erasure teamed up with Frankmusik, known for his lush production work with artists like Lady Gaga and Pet Shop Boys, and mixer Rob Orton, who's collaborated with Lana Del Rey and Charli XCX. The result is an electro-pop gem recorded across Maine, London, and Los Angeles, with Clarke's collection of analogue synths bringing a nostalgic warmth. The album's sound marries Erasure's timeless songwriting with intricate, polished production, creating a radiant, uplifting experience. Decades into their career, Erasure remain one of the UK's most cherished pop duos, blending warmth and optimism in every note.

Review: This Erasure album is a masterful album that show how good the electronic duo is 35 years into their career. The first single, 'Elevation', is an uplifting anthem that exemplifies the duo's knack for blending heartfelt lyrics with soaring melodies. Vince Clarke's signature synth work is ever-present, crafting lush soundscapes that complement Andy Bell's emotionally resonant vocals. Tracks like 'Reason' and 'Promises' burst with infectious energy, while ballads like 'Be The One' and 'Smoke and Mirrors' reveal a deeper, introspective side. Richard X's production adds modern polish without overshadowing their distinctive sound. Nearly three decades into their career, Erasure delivered a vibrant and multilayered album that's both timeless and forward-thinking. Ten years since first released, this version comes on white vinyl.

Review: Eroya is a Lagos-based collective bridging generations of musicians who trace Nigerian music from the 1940s to today's Naija grooves. Their sound weaves so called styles such as palm-wine, agidigbo, juju, highlife, Afro-funk and Afrobeat traditions. Key members include Sina Ayinde Bakare, son of juju pioneer Ayinde Bakare, juju legend Fatai Rolling Dollar, Afro-funk saxophonist Prince Eji Oyewole and Afrobeat pianist Duro Ikujenyo of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80. Highlights on this album include Alaba Pedro's soulful 'Ekaete', Tejebaby's hypnotic 'Africa', and Oyewole's flute-led 'Experience'. With its bubbling jazz textures and deep rhythmic energy, Eroya is a perfect tribute to Nigeria's enduring musical contributions.

Review: This special The 35th-anniversary reissue of Come Away with ESG celebrates the groundbreaking debut album by the Bronx sisters. It's a proper genre-defying classic that shaped hip-hop, house, and post-punk with its signature minimalist funk. ESG's stripped-down sound is built on raw drumbeats and hypnotic bass lines and defies traditional labels with a more groove-driven, horn and organ-free alternative to funk. Their influence spans decades and has inspires artists across several genres which is why Come Away remains a classic and one that proves that true rhythm lies in the spaces between the beats.

'Toubkal', inspired by field recordings of Berber music, pulsates with traditional rhythms and melodies, reimagined through electronic manipulation. 'Sultane', reflecting on themes of land and conflict, alternates between dense rhythmic textures and ethereal vocal passages. 'Lectures pour bandes magnetiques', a setting of poems by Rilke and Mandiargues, highlights the connection between the human voice and musical expression.

Review: The resurgence of solo British female artists like Lily Allen, Lady Sovereign, and Amy Winehouse highlights a distinct, acerbic edge that resonates with US audiences, especially when delivered with an accent. While American counterparts like Beyonce and Ciara can be assertive, they remain likable, whereas their British peers often embrace a more confrontational stance. Estelle's US debut, Shine, reflects this trend with its blend of sass and charm. The album kicks off with the cheeky 'Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)' and continues with the sharp-tongued 'No Substitute Love,' featuring a clever nod to George Michael's 'Faith.' Unlike her Brit contemporaries who might veer into bitterness, Estelle's approach is more nuanced and humane. The crossover hit 'American Boy,' featuring Kanye West, showcases an irresistible hook and dynamic production by Will.I.Am. Tracks like 'More Than Friends' and 'Pretty Please (Love Me)' highlight Estelle's warm, unpretentious style, making the album's sporadic shifts forgivable. While the album sometimes feels like a chaotic blend of influences, it ultimately affirms Estelle's potential, even if her artistic direction is still evolving.

Review: The newly unearthed 1970 Kongsberg Jazz Festival recording showcases Bill Evans' trio in a vibrant live setting. Featuring bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, this performance highlights the trio's evolving synergy. Recorded during Evans' methadone transition, the set reveals a newfound energy in his playing, marked by dynamic tempos and a percussive vigor distinct from the introspection of his earlier live recordings. The tracklist balances brisk renditions of standards like 'So What' and 'Autumn Leaves' with contemplative pieces such as 'Quiet Now' and 'Some Other Time'. Highlights include the mid-tempo elegance of 'Turn Out the Stars' and the emotive 'What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?' Gomez's bass solos feature prominently, particularly on 'Come Rain or Come Shine' and 'Nardis', where his virtuosity shines. Morell's nuanced brushwork complements Evans' shifts in mood, particularly during the tender ballads. The setlist, reportedly tailored on the spot, reflects Evans' knack for adapting to his audience. The interplay among the trio is masterful, underscoring their tight rapport. This release is both a historical document and a compelling listen for fans of Evans' artistry.

The opening track sets a reflective tone, paired with lush instrumentation and haunting vocals. Collaborations like the one with Sampha, Laura Grove and Alabaster DePlume bring emotional weight, while tracks like 'Never Felt Better' with Florence Welch and Sampha elevate the energy. Review: Since turning his hand to music production midway through the last decade, XL Recordings owner Richard Russell has delivered a couple of predictably hard to pigeonhole, guest-packed albums as Everything is Recorded. Russell, of course, has an admirably bulging contacts book and as deep a knowledge of British music - be it hip-hop, grime, rave, jazz, experimental electronica or otherwise - as anyone. The depth of both is naturally evident on third album Temporary, with Russell and a dizzying list of guests delivering atmospheric, sample-rich fusions of head-nodding, hip-hop leaning grooves, field recordings-heavy sample collages, woozy dream pop, sub-heavy nods to UK bass, slow-motion neo-folk, blunted trip-hop, contemporary UK jazz, hazy Americana and much more besides. That it works as a coherent and sonically adventurous album is testament to Russell's increasing skill as a producer and standalone musical artist.

Review: A native of the island nation of Cape Verde, Cesaria Evora was known as the country's foremost practitioner of the morna, a combination of West African percussion with Portuguese fados, Brazilian modinhas, and British sea shanties. Here her much-acclaimed debut album from 1999 is heard reissued by Music On Vinyl, highlighting a pinnacle point in her career. The 90s were a strong time for Evora; it saw to a string of original records after a pluming singing career in the decade prior. Evora here ventured further into Latin American infused soundscapes, venturing further outwards from her earlier Portuguese explorations.

Review: Originating in 1979 from the squatting movements of Amsterdam and Wormer, The Ex are one of the most dynamic, experimental and longest serving punk acts of the original Dutch scene, known for their anarcho-punk ethos, seamlessly blending elements of noise-rock, jazz, noise, no wave, free improv and traditionalist folk stretching from Hungary to Turkey, Ethiopia, Congo, and Eritrea. With over 20 full-length LPs to their succinct moniker thus far, If Your Mirror Breaks is the first album from the collective since 2018's 27 Passports, continuing their fearless sonic expansion with a ten-part series of surrealist daydreams, calls to action, ominous warnings and bursts of vitality tapped into the pulse of time.

Review: The Butcher Basement is a reimagined and blood-soaked rebirth of Extermination Dismemberment's 2010 debut album, which is dripping with gore and heavy with brutality. The wholly re-recorded release captures the grotesque atmosphere of its original conference but with added detail worked into the sounds. With these revamped compositions of fresh material rooted in their early style, plus sharpened production, these metal sounds hit harder than ever and thrive in morbid theatrics. Rather than just a simple reissue, The Butcher Basement is a whole new resurrection.

Review: Ensemble Modern and experimental, Berlin-based music composer and sound artist Hainbach come together for Primer, an album sourced from their 2022 Checkpoint concert and reworked in the studio with bassist Paul Cannon. The record transforms their fine live performance into a rich, immersive home listening experience with Hainbach's signature use of nuclear research gear, tape loops and vintage electronics weaving haunting, ever-shifting textures throughout. As such the pieces pulse with a sonic spark that captures the spirit of experimentation and collaboration and is taps into plenty of avant-garde thinking in its approach to drone and ambient.

Review: The Last Poets, pioneers of revolutionary spoken word and proto-rap, return with a powerful new album that blends their fiery lyricism with the infectious rhythms of Afrobeat. 'Africanism' sees the legendary duo, Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan, collaborating with a stellar cast of musicians, including the late Tony Allen, Prince Fatty, and members of Seun Kuti's Egypt 80. The result is a potent and timely exploration of social and political issues, delivered with the same raw energy and uncompromising spirit that has defined The Last Poets' music for over five decades. Abiodun revisits classics like 'When The Revolution Comes' and 'Gash Man', their messages of social justice and self-empowerment still burning bright. Umar's 'Niggers Are Scared Of Revolution' and 'Just Because' remain as potent and provocative as ever, their unflinching commentary on race and inequality cutting through the noise of contemporary discourse. The album's musical landscape is equally captivating, with Tony Allen's polyrhythmic drumming providing a driving force, complemented by the soulful melodies and intricate arrangements of the contributing musicians. A powerful reminder of the transformative power of music and spoken word.

Review: This 1965 collaborative album brings together some of the international music world's finest talents. Featuring Nara Leao's soothing vocals, Edu Lobo's striking guitar and Tamba Trio's vibrant harmonies, 5 Na Bossa captures the essence of Brazilian bossa nova and jazz with a warm and sunny inflexion. With iconic tracks like 'Reza' and 'Zambi' bringing Latin jazz flair, and Edu Lobo's 'Estatuinha' offering more ruminative folk sounds, this is a brilliant album for those who like South American sounds in all their many guises. The album was recorded live at the Paramount Theater in Sao Paulo and is truly essential listening.

Review: Jeff Parker and his ETA IVtet are back with their first new music since 2022's Mondays at Enfield Tennis Academy. The album delves into improvised jazz grooves and features longtime collaborators Anna Butterss on upright bass, sax from Josh Johnson and Jay Bellerose on drums. The compositions are carefully crafted to capture the essence of a single night's setlist and reflect the unique atmosphere of the now-defunct Enfield Tennis Academy. Parker channels this space into a beautifully layered and dynamic piece that builds intricate, shifting textures from simple musical ideas that evoke a rich, immersive listen.

Review: Jeff Parker's The Way Out of Easy harnesses his long-running ETA IVtet's residency at the Los Angeles creative music venue, ETA. Featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose, the album comprises four expansive tracks recorded live on January 2, 2023. Known for their transcendental, groove-oriented improvisations, the ETA IVtet's sound evolved over seven years, blending minimalism and polyrhythmic mantras. Engineered by Bryce Gonzales, who designed a custom mixer specifically for the group, The Way Out of Easy presents a pure, transparent auditory experience. The set begins with 'Freakadelic', a composition from Parker's 2012 album, before moving through meditative and richly textured pieces like 'Late Autumn' and 'Easy Way Out'. The album closes with a spontaneous dub/reggae groove titled 'Chrome Dome'. As the final chapter in ETA's history, The Way Out of Easy is a testament to the ensemble's deep creative synergy and the enduring spirit of the venue.

Review: In 1971, this revered figure of Italian jazz, facilitated a remarkable session that brought together a talented ensemble of musicians, including trumpetist Francesco "Cicci" Santucci, saxophonist Enzo Scoppa and renowned keyboardist Franco d'Andrea. This collaboration, recorded at Umiliani's Sound Workshop studio in Rome, resulted in a brilliant jazz-funk album that blends intricate rhythms with melodic improvisation. Santucci and Scoppa, both seasoned in the late 50s Italian jazz scene, are joined by Belgian organist Joel Vendrokenbrak, adding a unique flavor to the mix. The album features d'Andrea on electric piano, a precursor to his future work with the progressive jazz group Perigeo. Originally released under a different name, this album is now reissued for the first time with its striking original cover art. The reissue includes a poster and a printed insert featuring images of the Sound Workshop studio, offering a deeper connection to the historical significance of the recording. With its masterful blend of jazz, funk and Italian creativity, this reissue is a significant addition to any collection of rare and influential jazz recordings.

Review: Nothing Leaves The House: The Anthology brings together four talented producers who each bring their own flavour to instrumental hip-hop. Tall Black Guy kicks things off with 'One to One,' a jazzy, laid-back track with a smooth groove, followed by 'Solar Coaster For The People,' which ups the energy with its infectious rhythm. Eric Lau's 'Chop For Mr Thing' is a standout, with intricate beats and soulful layers, while Kidkanevil's 'Loopin' Ill' brings playful, quirky melodies. Mr Thing closes the collection with 'Changes,' a funky, groove-driven track that wraps things up on a high note. An essential compilation for fans of soulful hip-hop and jazzy beats.

Review: Espen Berg's Maetrix captures the pianist and composer at a bold creative high, as he upscales his craft, this time working with the celebrated Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. Originally premiered to a full ovation at the 2017 Molde International Jazz Festival, this six-part suite finally sees release, recorded between Oslo's Rainbow Studio and Ora Studio in Trondheim. Berg furthers his rep for rhythmic complexity and emotive depth to a 14-piece ensemble featuring standout artists Daniel Herskedal, Rob Waring, and Hayden Powell, while vocalists Kirsti Huke and Sissel Vera Pettersen ensure a graceful vocal topline. Echoes of Pat Metheny and Kenneth Dahl Knudsen waft through the compositions, but Maetrix stands firmly in Berg's own voice, radiating the sense of a collaborative effort years in the making.
