Review: George Otsuka Quintet were active in the Japanese jazz scene of the early to mid 70s, led by famed jazz drummer George Otsuka and with a modest grip of LPs to their name. It's been a while since anyone turned their attention to this visionary outfit, but now the stunning, freewheeling 1976 album "Physical Structure" has received the reissue treatment via Le Tres Jazz Club, and it's a good thing too. This incredible session finds Otsuka leading his band down limber, energised avenues of rhythm and groove, constantly skittering from scene to scene without missing a beat. The album even wraps up with a take on John Coltrane's evergreen "Naima" that leaps off the platter with joy in a fitting homage to the original.

Review: For the latest volume in their ongoing Japanese jazz reissue series, Le Tres Jazz Club has decided to offer up a new pressing of the sole album by the Hiromasa Suzuki Trio, 1978's breezy contemporary jazz masterpiece "Primrose". It's effectively a showcase for the impeccable piano playing skills of Hiromasa Suzuki, a Japanese scene stalwart who played on hundreds of albums until he passed away in 2001. Yet while Suzuki's fluid, loose and energetic playing naturally takes top billing, the accompanying performances from bassist Nobuyoshi Ino and drummer Steve Jackson (best known for appearing on one of Chick Correa's most celebrated albums) are equally as impressive. As a result, "Primrose" is a near perfect jazz album.

Review: Makoto Terashita's 1978 debut album "Great Harvest" has long been considered one of the Japanese jazz scene's genuinely rare gems, with original vinyl copies changing hands online for several hundred pounds apiece. This reissue is therefore long overdue. The album itself features the pianist and a quartet of backing musicians (guitar, drums, bass, tenor saxophone) offering up a set of breezy, fusion-influenced cuts. What you get is a mixture of Terashita originals (see the sublime "Samoa" and album highlight "Tell Me An Old Story, Grand Papa") and covers, including excellent interpretations of tracks by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. It's a suitably addictive and intoxicating blend.
