Ananda (extended mix) (7:30)
Mantra (extended mix) (9:57)
Review: Two techno knights in shining armour, Joseph Capriati and Indira Paganotto, rise to a collaborative challenge on their latest split vinyl single. Brought to their resident Artcore Records, 'Ananda' and 'Mantra' are spiritually intoned yet no less hard psy-tech towerers. Paganotto is said to have laid down the exotic vocal chops on 'Ananda' directly and the final product hears these laced through a blossoming, emu-synth rising action and a stuttering pre-drop. Perfect fits for the larger club or festival stage, these twin tracks work the careful balance of grave and utopian sound.

Heavy Rotations EP
Cat: MLKL 029. Rel: 01 Aug 24
Beau Didier - "Tool" (10) (5:31)
Isaiah - "The Blue" (5:34)
Flits - "Club To Club" (5:40)
Beau Didier, Flits & Isaiah - "Bojum" (5:34)
Review: Four fresh new ones from the Molekul crew in Paris. The title 'Heavy Rotations' plays on the affective "heaviness" of toting records around the world and DJing them at raves; it's no wonder they say that where there is repetition, as in techno, there is unfinished business (in this context, the word 'rave' is no coincidence either). Needless psychoanalytic accounts of repetitive beats aside, the tools on this heavy-set, heavyweight, heavy-hitting 12" record - which merge the heavy-metallic industrial works of Beau Didier, Isaiah, and Flits - are hard, yet gut-wrenching enough to loosen even the tightest of screws. The tracks therein are speedier even than a mighty Mitre saw, by which the hardest of woods are split into two; and you can be sure that, like a saw, you'll soon see and hear these cuts on heavier rotation too.

Dot & Matthew Oh - "Horizon"
Nicolas Barnes - "Frames"
Modernism - "Metal Covered"
Ian Oskadev - "Clarity Of Thoughts"
Review: The Outlaw label's first compilation brings together four incredible artists, alongside label owner Mathew Oh, for a diverse and compelling techno journey. Side-1 opens with 'Horizon' by Dot & Matthew Oh, a track that blends catchy, upbeat rhythms with deep, melodic layers and spacey sound effects. The production is crisp and slick, making for an engaging start. Nicolas Barnes' 'Frames' follows with a floating, melodic dub techno experience. The track's driving beat is perfectly complemented by thought-provoking, atmospheric chords, creating a focused body and mind. On Side-2, Modernism's 'Metal Covered' offers a clever, intricate beat, striking a balance between deep and upbeat elements, making it both dynamic and hypnotic. Ian Oskadev closes the compilation with 'Clarity Of Thoughts', a track that pulses with energy, moving high-hats and a melodic core that builds a sense of momentum, delivering an uplifting finale to this excellent collection. VA Vol 1 is a showcase of quality production and innovation in techno, highlighting some of the genre's finest up-and-coming talents alongside established names.

Toro ((I Hate Models Speed Up Revival edit Of Andre VII remix) (6:09)
Review: 'Toro' is a modern classic post-punk track by Spanish band El Columpio Asesino, formed in 1999. Thoroughly difficult to classify or put into any neat box, their sound is characterised by synthesised elements and sinister rhythmic singing, with cryptic lyrics heard throughout. Here techno titan I Hate Models lends 'Toro' a surprise sped-up remix of a remix, remixing the ultra-dry retro-nostalgist version by Andre VII. Whereas Andre's is a drier take on the track - setting its dark-wavey lyrics against serious buzzing saws and scary sixteenth-note stabs in true synthpunk fashion - I Hate Models' version expounds on this further, fleshing out hardcore rollicks and luxury woops for a sublime, floor-frightening ultimatum in sound.

Review: Corsican label Isula Science drop a fresh brooder of previously unknown electro knowns, this time from label founder Flash FM alongside HDV, Sweely and Man/ipulate. Spanning vertiginous dark acid, then moving on through to dreamatic neon breakbeat and expedient Italo - 'Vol de nuit' especially makes signature use of a classic slap bass synth - they've got us entirely covered here. Enticing bumps in the night from the exquisitors.

Review: The cultured ESHU label has pulled other some more tasteful talents for this four track 'Conrexture' EP. It opens up with Julien Fuentes's 'Jah Justice' (Klaridub Ambient mix) which is a nice atmospheric opener with some conscious dub mutterings and sci-fi pads. Jocelyn & Yasin Engwer then kick on with some watery, sub-aquatic minimal dub tech bliss in the form of 'Sticks & Stones', Voal gets even more dark and dirty with some grubby dub basslines on 'Eight Ball' and Ivano Tetelepta/Christine Benz layer up watery droplets, melodic whistles, static electricity and rubbery rhythms to mind-melting perfection on 'Supreme.'

Review: The influential 90s IDM and techno act Future Sound of London continues to delve into their early career with the reissue of The Pulse EP Vol 2, originally released in 1991. This EP exemplifies the early techno sound, blending rave elements with the more intelligent and linear side of electronic dance music. Side-1 kicks off with 'Stolen Documents' (Jazz dub) by The Future Sound of London, a track that perfectly melds jazzy undertones with dub influences, creating a sophisticated and immersive experience. Following this is Smart Systems' 'Zip Code' (Stress Ball mix), a piece that balances high-energy beats with a stress-relieving ambiance. Side-2 begins with 'Innate' (W O W mix) by The Future Sound of London, a track that delves into deeper, more atmospheric realms, showcasing the group's innovative approach to soundscaping. Indo Tribe's 'I've Become What You Were' (Insider mix) closes the EP, with a pulsating techno rhythm that encapsulates the essence of the early '90s rave scene. Before their signature chill out sound was made, FSOL his some of their highest notes here with these early EPs.

Marcelino Sanchez - "Motive One"
Review: Shout out to Greek powerhouse Kinesthetik Recordings for making it all the way to a half a century of releases there. They celebrate in the best way they know - with more tranced-out sounds from artists in their orbit. Giorgio & Andreas open things up with 'Nice One' and its thudding tech drums and cosmic synth lines. Diskinesia gets much more raw and moody with the edgy drums of 'Back & Forth' and Interphase then drops a pair of industrial tech thumpers. Giorgio & Andreas reappear with a raw, roughshod and deep groove and Marcelino Sanchez's 'Motive One' offers dub techno to close.

Review: New label Klopfgeist kicks off in fine style with some low down nasty tech house styles from Ivan Iacobucci and Stella Fiore. Raw, spooky synth wave is the guiding influence on 'Rock Da Foz', while 'Brigitte' has a dark side electro slant which should go down a storm with lovers of that ghostly old-skool sound. 'What Is Inside?' maintains the mood with more analogue synth tones from beyond the grave, tapping into a vibe as cheeky and playful as it is creepy. This sound is getting major traction right now and Iacobucci and Flore have absolutely nailed it.

Review: Liam Shortall approaches his latest project with an ethos of exploration rather than perfection. Over the course of the 'Bad With Names' promo campaign, he generates 108 demo ideas, not aiming for polished tracks but for creative depth and a chance to refine his production style. By early 2024, these ideas evolve into 30 completed tracks, recorded with some of his favourite musicians. The focus remains on spontaneity, allowing the music to take shape naturally without the constraints of a perfectly finished album. Each track is unique, reinforcing the project's raw and unfiltered approach to creation.

Ceremony Of The Dead (Michael Mayer mix) (7:01)
Abyss II X Darkness (Philipp Stoffel Fusion mix) (4:57)
Review: Known for his meticulous sound design and trippy, psychedelic approach, the Japanese producer gets key tracks from his 2023 Agartha album remixed with contributions from Kompakt veteran Michael Mayer and rising talent Philipp Stoffel. Opening the selection, 'Agartha (Wata Igarashi Sorcery Acid Mix)' plunges into heavy analog territory, channeling old-school acid trance with pulsing basslines and swirling synth layers. It's a trip that maintains a relentless and hypnotic momentum. In contrast, 'Floating Against Time (Wata Igarashi Shimmering Mix)' leans into atmospheric techno, unfolding with a celestial, meditative quality. The track's ethereal pads and evolving textures create a sense of weightlessness, staying true to Igarashi's deep, transportive aesthetic. Michael Mayer steps in with his version of 'Ceremony of the Dead', infusing it with an upbeat vintage techno feel. His remix brims with Kompakt's signature warmth, blending ravey elements with a steady, driving groove. Closing the set, 'Abyss II X Darkness (Philipp Stoffel Fusion Mix)' picks up the pace with rolling basslines and dubby, melodic layers. Stoffel's take is fast and fluid, balancing deep, introspective elements with club-ready energy. A refined touch for floor or sofa alike.

Review: Deep techno connoisseur, video soundtrack designer and mind-melting minimalist Wata Igarashi is a perfect fit for Dekmantel's more trippy and experimental UFO label off-shoot. If you have never experienced the stage of the same name at their annual festival then turn this one up loud, shut your eyes and flash the lights. 'Kaleidoscopic' is just that - a mad melange of synths and drums that race onwards into the unknown. 'The Sailage' keeps you there with start synth patterns and textured drums, 'Steaming' brings some acid to the party and 'Interweave' then dial up the brightness with walls of pixelated melody that feel like an endless rush. What a ride.

Review: In techno circles, Figure has long been a byword for quality. Len Faki's latest bit of A&R sees the newly emerging Iglo step up with some fresh perspectives. 'Neverplace' kicks off and is one of those 5am sounds - stripped back and rolling with high-speed hypnosis resulting from the dubby drums. But then comes an aching vocal sample that is drawn out and filled with emotional pain so takes things to incredible levels of late-night euphoria in an instant. 'Recovery' is another bubbly blend of drums, dub and bass, 'Tell Me Everything' brings some psychedelia to the pads and 'Introspection' is perfect backroom mind material.

Review: Ignez's latest release, SMV 010, is a four-track exploration of techno that takes listeners on an extraordinary journey. This offering from Somov showcases Ignez's ability to craft compelling and distinctive sounds within the genre. Side-1 opens with 'Wounded Healer,' which features a strong beat and addictive elements that mesh perfectly with the groove. The track's tribal and darker undertones set a powerful tone. Next is 'Tavisupali,' a slightly demented and ominous builder that adds heavy movement and depth to the record. Flipping to Side-2, 'Ascend' delivers an epic groove, maintaining the momentum with its addictive rhythms. Finally, 'Lightworker' brings a haunting and eerie atmosphere, with melodic and unique strings that elevate the track to a new level. This is a very inventive approach and skillful execution. The seamless blend of dark, tribal, and melodic elements work great together.

Review: Japanese techno producer Toru Ikemoto returns with a kicking new EP on Conundrum Records. Ikemoto has an uncompromising style which finds him boil things down to the bare essentials and dive deep into dark, hypnotic then worlds with hey low ends and a real sense of urgency. His three new jams here all foment that signature style, from the pulsing bass throb of 'Don't Play 171' to the more percussive loops of 'Don't Play 162.' 'Don't Play 170' is pure heady and linear techno bliss and a remix from Lindsey Herbert shuts down with some sub-aquatic rhythms.

Review: Imogen's 'Metanoia' on Tresor is a powerful six-track release that pushes boundaries within the techno sphere. Side-1 begins with 'The Way She Moves,' a hard-hitting, crunchy track that brings intense, aggressive energy to the table. The industrial-tinged 'Summer Kiss' follows, driven by an uptempo tribal rhythm, while 'Tired Bones' brings a deeper grooveiclassic Tresor with its wicked, pulsating proper techno vibe. Side-2 ramps things up with 'Growing In The Dark', a relentless, alien-sounding cut with sharp percussion that drives the energy to fever pitch. 'Breathe Again' shifts gears, incorporating breakbeats and a melodic layer with a touch of Belgian doom, adding a moody edge. The EP closes on 'DX Melancholyflower', an ambient and mysterious ender that feels stark and airy, leaving the listener in a reflective state. 'Metanoia' is a fierce, dynamic EP that features Imogen's ability to blend intensity and atmosphere, making it a thrilling listen for techno enthusiasts. Not for the faint of heart!

The release kicks off with 'A New Earth', some banging peak time electro and Imogen's first collaboration with legendary electro producer DJ Stingray. Now he lands on Cyphon Recordings with a rare four-track EP of Detroit-infused, future-facing house and techno that is marbled with the characterful and compelling lyricism of JaronX. Context is Broken' leads with JaronX's poignant critique of global media, followed by heavy-duty house beats and striking vocals. 'Say The Truth' offers a glitchy, syncopated roller, 'Identity Keeps Changing' is a morphing techno track with '90s rave influences, while 'Utopia' rounds off the EP with transfixing techno that is wrapped up in deft synths, drones and wispy pads from the future.

Review: The Fourier Transform label outlay an arresting sonic journey on their debut release, bringing together breakbeat, ambient IDM, ambient techno, and prog house under a single banner. Opening with Inkipak's 'Betwixt', we're met with sonorous low-mid square waves and machine-gun-fire breaks, recalling the breathtaking, verging on apocalyptic expanse of a warehouse rave turned laser light show turned warzone. We break from this warring weir with 'Omnicron Acid' and 'City Of Tomorrow' by Gimmik and Brian Kage respectively, which lowers the intensity and sonic flow via spacious atmospheres and dudding percussive pops. Finally, the perfect fusion of the former two moods is achieved on 'Corrosive Tongue', the lead synth on which sounds like just that.

The aquatic textures and tightly wound drums keep coming on 'REM' which has subtle vocal sounds marbled the airwaves while 'Driven By Misfire' keeps on the perfectly layered approach with each element unfurling with its own sense of time and space yet all held together in perfectly hypnotic fashion. 'Hightides' shuts down with cubby undercurrents and phased lines smudging the divide between dreams and reality.

Review: It is exciting to see a new label doing so well in a country that is not traditionally known for techno. Junction Forest is a physical record store in Seoul, South Korea and also a recent home to releasing some great techno sounds. 'Dark Energy' by Inner Lakes is their newest record and comes with four strong late-night romps into classic but updated techno and trance sounds.'H2k' is a hypnotic builder that rides a nasty bassline to a triumphant ending while 'Sundown' is a mysterious traveller that takes you into another realm. On the flip side, the title track is an uptempo track that takes on a more spiritual trance path. Lastly, 'Voo2' is a wicked voyage into darker techno and trance happiness.

Memory Reset
Dance Opera (New mix)
Review: Innershades is a perfect fit for the impossibly consistent Clone Jack For Daze series headed up by Dutch underground powerhouse Serge. The reason? They craft effective techno sounds that hark back to the glory days of yesterday but always with a healthy eye on the future. 'Homage' embodies that with snappy perc and drums and zippy, acid-laced snares that bring the soul. 'Tactics' is wired up with more magnificent synth sounds that keep things tense but emotive and '1992' is a tasteful throwback with more acid goodness. 'Memory Reset' keeps the jacked-up drums and wiry synth work flowing and 'Dance Opera (New mix)' shuts down with more acid, house and techno class.

It's 1990 (5:23)
Review: Innershades delivers a nostalgic techno experience with The Beat EP on Impakto Records, channeling the essence of New Beat and Belgian proto-techno. The EP kicks off with 'The Beat,' a track that sets the tone with its driving rhythms and classic synthesiser textures. The 'Ibiza Mix' of 'The Beat' offers a sun-soaked, slightly more relaxed take, perfect for summer nights. On Side-2, 'What's To Come' dives into deep, atmospheric sounds, showcasing a blend of old-school synths and modern techno elements. The EP concludes with 'It's 1990,' a tribute to the era with punchy beats and an authentic retro vibe. Using iconic gear like the Roland TB-303 and SH-101, Innershades crafts a timeless set that resonates with fans of vintage techno.

Review: Flight Mode Records' fifth release offers a riveting exploration of futuristic techno landscapes with four distinct tracks from formidable artists. Innuendo's 'Reise Ins Zentrum Der Zeit' kicks off the first side with pulsating rhythms and a progressive build, evoking a journey through time with its driving energy. Review: NECHTO launches its first vinyl compilation with a blend of fresh and familiar global talent from Italy, Croatia, Mexico, India, the USA, and Ukraine. The record includes six dynamic tracks that have already been tested by label head Nastia, such as Namhar's powerful track 'Run Baby Run,' and JNKS with the debut track 'Refill.' New faces include Italian producer Fabrizio Di Santis with '90128,' Croatian techno sensation Insolate with 'Go With U,' and Ukrainian talent Kichi Kazuko with 'Serpents.'
