Review: Joe Hisaishi's latest release offers a compelling fusion of classical and cinematic music. The compositions, originally crafted for film soundtracks, are reimagined with orchestral arrangements that breathe new life into the pieces. The album showcases Hisaishi's signature style, blending emotive melodies with intricate orchestration. Listeners are treated to a rich auditory experience that highlights the depth and versatility of Hisaishi's work.

Review: It only seems like yesterday when Nick Cave delivered his wonderfully captivating joint piece with fellow-Australian Bad Seed Warren Ellis. In fact it was early March, and since then we've all likely been through the kinds of highs and lows this record reflects so accurately. There's a lot of space to Carnage, but it's also an album of intensity, in a refined and sophisticated way.

Packed with incredibly cinematic, theatrical and dramatic moments, at its loudest 'White Elephant' is bordering on a genuinely euphoric religious experience, one rousing and hugely emotional crescendo of chorus and big stage notes after another. At its quietest, 'Shattered Ground' sounds like one man alone with a piano and eternal sadness. Meanwhile, the title track is classic troubadour business. In summary, a grand, mesmerising and personal voyage.

Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis created a moving soundtrack for the biopic Back to Black which explores the late great jazz singer Amy Winehouse's rise and enduring impact. Their evocative composition blends melancholic strings with ambient soundscapes to reflect Winehouse's turbulent journey and profound artistry. The duo's music enhances the film's emotional depth as it captures the rawness of Winehouse's struggles and the brilliance of her musical legacy. Through haunting melodies and soulful arrangements, Cave and Ellis pay a poignant tribute to Winehouse and perfectly complement the film's narrative.

Review: Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack for the National Geographic documentary about an imagined 2033 manned mission to Mars feels like a sketch for the atmospheric soundscapes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' 2016 album Skeleton Tree. Both works inhabit the same dark-hued, super-charged sonic atmosphere. Cave's cinematic music, enriched by Ellis's imaginative contributions, explores a wide range of sounds: distorted guitars in 'Space X,' sibylline keyboard arpeggios in 'Space Station,' and vast synthesized swathes evoking space's void. 'Planetarium' features soulful drones and synthesized strings, creating anticipation and stillness. With few vocals, this ambient soundtrack is perfect for chilling out and daydreaming. It's a departure from the intense emotions of the Bad Seeds, reflecting Cave's inward focus after personal tragedy. Unlike many soundtracks, this one stands apart, integral to Cave and Ellis's collaboration, and can be savored without thinking about Mars. Now available on vinyl for the first time!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

There's a lovely side story to this album, so allow us a moment to divulge (and digress). One From The Heart is 12 songs written by the legendary Tom Waits for the Francis Ford Coppola movie of the same name. It took around one year to record in its entirely, with this taking place at Wally Heider's Studio 3, in Hollywood. The facility also happened to employ a woman called Kathleen Brennan, who would eventually become Waits' wife, the pair meeting during the making of this record.

She would go on to be "an incandescent presence on all songs we work on together," to use his phrasing, and the lady who helped usher in a more experimental period in the master song-man's career. As for this album, things are more traditional than much that came after it, a combination of late night bar jazz, main stage balladry, rock 'n' roll and sexy tunes to fall in love with.

Review: 1990 seemed an awful long way of in 1981 when Enzo Castellari created the post-apocalyptic Bronx Warriors. His homage to Escape From New York, the film reveals the Big Apple to be the scariest place known to mankind... Yet scraps, kidnaps and robs to an incredibly funky soundtrack. Amid the mild cosmic flurries and deep-seeded Italo dynamics there's some great cultural references with tracks such as "Radioprogramme" playfully poking fun at interchangeable hick airwave twangs while "Learning To Die" goes deep into hammy operatics, referencing Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" with a great sense of bohemian rhapsody. Whether you've watched this crucial slice of pulp cinema or not, the soundtrack will instantly engage.

Review: You'd think that with a cover such as this one, and a special added gift like handy vibrator, this album would be some obscure resurrection of a 70s/80s cult hit. In reality, you couldn't be further from the truth. Granted, the sleeve and the sounds do take inspiration from the camp glow of some vintage porn B-flick, but this is all music which has never been released until now. PJ and Daniela Wassermann (the latter having sadly passed away in 2011) conjured quite the spectacle in 1985, but it was probably a bit to risque for general release. These kinky synth tunes are as sleazy as you can get with synth-pop but there its also something beautifully honest about this entire album, from start to finish. As similar pattern of cheesy 'Arabian' sounds are twisted and morphed over metallic drums and gorgeous machine-drum soul. What a smacker! Grab it before it slips away...

Review: This CD, vinyl and download version of the Us & Them tour risks doing Pink Floyd legend Waters a disservice. Recorded on the 2017-2018 tour of the same name, the shows were dedicated to peace and love, but were also purposefully designed to stoke some particularly heated political fires, much of which is lost on this audio-only version.

No Black Lives Matters or Palestine-Israel imagery here, then. Nor flying pig props. But while this might disappoint some it means the album adds a new dimension to the Us & Them legacy. The tour is distilled into nothing but music and audible atmosphere. So we focus entirely on spoken messages, air raid effects, and a set list packed with Floyd classics ('Another Brick In The Wall', 'Wish You Were Here', 'Welcome To The Machine'), sometimes adapted, sometimes perfectly preserved by one of the UK's finest 20th Century artists.

Directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff and Lanchester, the 1935 horror classic is widely regarded as one of cinema's greatest sequels and was rightly celebrated as Whale's masterpiece. The movie was added to the U.S. National Film Registry in 1998 for its cultural significance and this historic release has been sourced from master acetates at Syracuse University and Universal's archives and marks the first time the film's original score is available on vinyl.

Review: The Au Par Girls was a British sex comedy in 1972 starring Gabrielle Drake (yep, Nick Drake's sister) and Richard O'Sullivan (yep, Gilbert O'Sullivan's brother!). The music is fun, sexy and swinging with 17 brilliant tracks all filled to the brim with jet-set jazz vibes, groovy and scatty vocals and string instrumentals. It immediately takes you back to that era and brings a smile to your face as it does so. It must be said that the film itself is no longer OK because of its outdated view of life, rights, sex and taste, but the soundtrack at least is well worth having.

Review: This is the unreleased soundtrack from Bartleby, the British drama film from 1970 directed by Anthony Friedman. It was an adaptation of the short story Bartleby, the Scrivener; A Story of Wall-street by Herman Melville. The plot revolved around the young audit clerk Bartleby, who as a result of being overwhelmed by the pressures of modern life withdraws into his own world. 31 years later, there was another remake directed by Jonathan Parker, with Crispin Glover in the lead role. Sound wise, it is a' blissful mix of British pastoral jazz and serious drum, double bass and string action'.

Review: Given that Alexander Korostinsky's Whatitdo Archive Group project is a wholehearted tribute to 1970s library funk, it makes sense for this debut album to be marketed as a "long lost soundtrack to an Italian cinematic masterpiece". It isn't, of course - it's brand spanking new - but Korostinsky and company's grooves, instrumentation and production is so authentic that many will be fooled into thinking that they're purchasing a rare classic. Those with knowledge of both movie soundtracks and the library music scene will note the various nods to familiar and not-so-familiar composers (the swinging sixties work of Roy Budd and Ennio Morricone in particular), while the filmic nature of the music makes us wish The Black Stone Affair was a real film. Either way, it's a hugely entertaining album that's well worth your attention.

Review: This is a rare repress of a rare record that is brilliantly spooky, weird and wonderful. It is a soundtrack from 1970 by Marc Wilkinson., who was the former musical director of the National Theatre. It was created by a talented ensemble made up of Ondes Martenot and Cymbalom and the music is based on the Devil's Interval. This new reissue comes with all new artwork but the music is true to the OG. There are creepy strings, sweeping orchestral manoeuvres and plenty of moments of darkness and unease amongst more beautiful passages of soul awakening sound.

Review: John Williams' Home Alone soundtrack is a heartwarming classic that perfectly complements the holiday season. Known for his work on Star Wars, E.T.and Harry Potter, Williams brings the same orchestral magic to this beloved Christmas film. The score includes memorable tracks like 'Somewhere in My Memory,' a recurring theme throughout the film, and 'Star of Bethlehem,' which captures the festive spirit with choral and orchestral elegance. The standout track, 'Setting the Trap,' diverges from Williams' usual orchestral sound, incorporating electronics and percussion to enhance Kevin's creative showdown with the burglars. Alongside traditional Christmas carols like 'O Holy Night' and 'Carol of the Bells,' the soundtrack blends nostalgia with whimsy. Though the album repeats familiar motifs, its charm makes it a refreshing alternative to typical holiday music. The Home Alone soundtrack is available in a limited edition red and gold vinyl 2xLP, making it an essential for any festive playlist. Whether it's playing while decorating the tree or enjoying Christmas cookies, this release brings the holiday spirit alive.

Review: The finale of the original trilogy had it all, sewers, blimps, mysterious invisible CGI bridges, you name it! What it also had was an incredible soundtrack, now reissued here to commemorate its 35th anniversary. Although Temple of Doom was another box office hit, critical reactions were heavily mixed and it obviously affected director Steven Spielberg enough that he spent a couple extra years on completing the Indiana Jones trilogy. John Williams of course returns with a lot of new themes - there are a couple of artifact themes this time around, both evoking a strong religious feeling, without any of the ominous feeling that some of the other movies' soundtrack have. The first is the primary Grail theme, which appears in the travel cue portion of 'X Marks the Spot.' Most of its appearances were absent on the original album, but restored here. In the case of Indiana Jones, the music is almost as important as the movies - and the Last Crusade was one of the emost original and in depth soundtracks in the series.

Review: John Williams' iconic soundtrack for Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom remains a classic amongst soundtrack fans as it captures the adventurous spirit of the film in every note. With thrilling orchestrations and memorable motifs, Williams once again proves his mastery in cinematic composition from the exhilarating 'The Temple Of Doom' theme to the haunting 'Slave Children's Crusade,' each track transports you in an instant to the heart of the action-packed adventure. Review: It's not everyday that a film soundtrack manages to penetrate the US Billboard charts. Let alone make it into the top 10. Star Wars, the score to the first movie, did just that, peaking at Number Two in 1977 when it was first released, while a disco version by Meco rode the Saturday Night Fever wave all the way to the Death Star and Number One, beating the main Star Wars theme, which hit Number 10 Stateside. The rest, of course, is history, and includes two incredible sequels - and their accompanying music - which cemented the franchise as one of the most iconic and successful in cinematic history. Now-legendary composer John Williams has plenty to answer for in terms of creating that legacy, writing some of the most recognisable instrumental motifs any of us have ever heard at the talkies. What more is there to say?

John Williams, known for his sweeping orchestral arrangements in classics like Star Wars and Jurassic Park, contrasts with Hans Zimmer's modern, dynamic and more minimal soundscapes from films like Inception and Gladiator. This orchestral fusion bridges generations of cinema lovers and seamlessly blends Williams' timeless melodies with Zimmer's contemporary flair. The performance promises a cinematic experience, transporting audiences through the rich tapestry of emotions evoked by these masterpieces, all interpreted through the Orchestre Curieux's unique artistic lens.

Review: Classical and film composition legend John Williams, at the time of writing, is currently still in Tokyo; it was only two months ago, in February 2024, that Williams returned to Japan for two special concerts, held in Matsumoto and Tokyo respectively, to perform select pieces from his esteemed film score repertoire. Performed alongside conductor Seiji Ozawa - and this being his debut with the world famous Saito Kinen Orchestra - the second of these concerts is now available to purchase on vinyl here thanks to Deutsche Grammophon, complementing his prior concert albums The Berlin Concert and John Williams in Vienna.

Review: The most beautiful themes of the famous science fiction universe Star Wars created by the American director George Lucas are now gathered together on this exclusive vinyl record. First conceived as a cinematic trilogy in 1977, the franchise now counts films, series, novels and other goodies taking place «a long time ago in a galaxy far far away» in which a conflict between Jedi knights and Sith warriors is forever waged. The infamous soundtrack composed by John Williams, notably inspired by Wagner's operas, has gone on to influence the greatest of film musics and is veritably etched into the brains of anyone who's ever set foot inside a cinema. On this majestic record, the soundtrack's star pieces are herd performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. May the force be with you!

Review: The 2022 horror film 'M3gan' deals with the uncanny terror of having a sort of AI-driven robot gain malevolent sentience in the comfort of a suburban home. British composer Anthony Willis, known for his work on past greats like 'How To Train Your Dragon', proves himself adept at sonically reflecting this pre-singularity dread. Much like its theme of a shadowy toy company programmer's invention of a murderous lifelike doll, the soundtrack is looming and conspiratorial, and deservingly comes to OST specialists Waxwork on the LP version here.

Review: Pet Shop Boys legend Brian Wilson is a towering figure of 20th-century popular music. It is no wonder a film about his life has been made and this is it - Long Promised Road is a documentary that sees Wilson take an intimate journey with Rolling Stone editor and longtime friend Jason Fine as they reminisce about his career. The film features interviews with plenty of his high-profile peers from Elton John to Bruce Springsteen and plenty of superb tunes - some are unreleased tracks, some are alternate versions of classics, and one is an all-new tune by the man himself.

Review: Linear, heartfelt videogames tend to be an overlooked art form. But Massimo Guarini's Last Day Of June might be one of the first games to buck this trend, having been described as an "incredibly powerful" experience and "some pretty exceptional art" by major critics Eurogamer and Gaming Age. Inspired by ex-Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson and his 2013 song 'Drive Home', this puzzle game follows the hazy memories of a couple suffering a car accident. Most music nerds understand that the key to a good A/V project is a good score; now fittingly, coming to all DSPs, is the game's full-length soundtrack by Wilson, who was tracked down to score its entirety after learning of its inspirations. Expect hammocking post-rock, piano interludes and strange, dark ambient crevices from this album, accompanying an adventurous and critically acclaimed epic.

Review: Almost 15 years after her tragic death and admission to the ill-fated '27 club', it's impossible not to tear up when thinking about Amy Winehouse. The untimely loss of such an incredible talent is one thing, gradually understanding that nobody caught and held such a vulnerable person in their time of need is what really hits the hardest. Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson's biographical drama about the UK singer-songwriter and musician's rise to stardom, and the fallout, was never going to be an easy watch, then. As if we needed any more proof, the soundtrack really emphasises just how timeless Winehouse was as an artist. Highlights from her own incredible output are here - 'What Is It About Men', 'Stronger Than Me', 'Valerie', '(There Is) No Greater Love', the list could go on - as are some of the most evocative and captivating soul, blues and r&b tracks of the 20th Century. And there's nothing to separate these from each other, sonically, lyrically, or emotionally. We weren't worthy, and maybe never will be

Review: It's always fascinating to discover a completely different side to an artist like Gerald Woodruff. Jezz to most, he's best known for his spell with the mighty Black Sabbath, appearing on the Technical Ecstasy album, and performing on both that tour and the dates in support of landmark LP Sabotage. He also recorded with Robert Plant and Phil Collins on the former's debut album, Pictures at Eleven. As such he's probably not the first artist you'd expect to have made an underwater soundtrack to a forgotten marine life epic, Wonders of the Underwater World. A production two years in the making, Woodroffe's accompaniment uses a number of synths and electronic instruments that Vangelis was fond of at the time, lending a sense of the miraculous and unknown to the score, while the crew at Trunk Record have also created a retro sleeve complete with sticker sheet, meaning you can create your own seabed scene on the cover

Review: Bitchin Bajas have certainly been busy of late. Alongside their recent collaboration with Bonnie Prince Billie, they've found time to create a soundtrack to Olivia Wyatt's recent documentary on the Moken people - an Austronesian sea-based people who live off the flora and fauna they find in their natural surroundings - which is collected here alongside the original field recordings that Wyatt collated whilst making the film. The result is a beguiling and dreamlike piece of work that complements the footage perfectly and is an impressively evocative piece in its own right. A DVD of the movie is also included.
