Review: Who doesn't love Toy Story? It's an on going classic with a heart of gold, some of The best animation in the film world and most loveable characters to ever make the silver screen. Whether young or old, snuggling down to watch this sone is always a treat, and now you can bring some of that magic onto your decks with the red vinyl compilation album. It brings together some of the best tracks and favourite musical moments of the movie such as, of course the most notable song of them all, 'You've Got A Friend In Me (Para El Buzz Espanol)' as well as 'I Will Go Sailing No More' and 'We Belong Together.'

Review: Painter, musician, actor, director and producer. John Lurie has done a lot in his time, whether that's appearing in 19 movies, composing for 20 TV shows and films - including some of those he was the star of - or producing primitivist art work. Here, we get to engage with two of those back catalogues, even if only because these are scores to a pair of his most iconic flicks. Always cool and stripped, Lurie's stuff is the kind of experimental-leaning jazz that works so well when setting the scene. And this applies off screen, IRL too: pressing play here will only serve to create a mood wherever you are, no matter what you're doing. One of shadowy streets, yellow hued spots, smoky barrooms and dark backrooms, a sense of after hours exploration.

Review: Pom Poko, also known as The Raccoon War, is a charming animated comedy-drama from Studio Ghibli that premiered on July 16, 1994. As the first feature film created at Ghibli's new Koganei studio, it marks the directorial debut of Isao Takahata. The story follows a group of tanuki (raccoon dogs) who band together to defend their forest home from encroaching urban development. The film's title, Pom Poko, refers to the traditional sound made by tanuki drumming their bellies, highlighting the rich folklore and cultural references woven throughout its enchanting and emotional narrative. The accompanying Pom Poko (Image Album), envisioned by Takahata, showcases an exploration of various facets of Japanese music, with raccoons as the film's central characters. This impactful soundtrack enhances the film's themes and moods, providing a delightful auditory experience that resonates with viewers. Overall, Pom Poko stands as a testament to Ghibli's ability to blend whimsical storytelling with profound environmental messages, making it a cherished addition to the studio's illustrious repertoire.

Review: Galcher Lustwerk has put together a collection of 10 ambient cuts here that he wrote to score a film by Josh Kline, a fine artist whose solo exhibition 'Project for a New American Century' recently opened at the Whitey Museum of American Art in New York. It is a dystopic science fiction movie that details what happens after the climate crisis really takes hold. The music is an esoteric mix of free jazz, drones and bleeped-out ambient that is alive with busy, fizzing frequencies. It's a dense, textural brew that collides synth and sax sounds into a new sort of tribute to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner score.

Review: To understand Didn't You Hear the soundtrack it's important to get a bit of the back story behind this obscure and genuine rarity. Didn't You Hear the movie was a little-known and unarguably strange 1983 cinema release that barely made it to many screens, but was notable for two reasons - it's one of the earliest acting credits given to Gary Busey, and it features one of the first all-electronic scores, by non-other than Canadian composer and synth pioneer, Mort Garson.

The work still sounds impressive. For the most part it clearly feels like a film score, but some tracks more than stand up on their own grounds. The subdued chaos of 'Bamboo City' could be used by techno and electro DJs today, 'Virgil's Theme' is a reflective slice of melodic ambience, while 'Death Talk & Jeep Approach' is a sparse, minimalistic electronic-classical masterpiece.

Review: Some 30 years later, Flashback, the legendary game by Paul Cuisset, is back with a new addition to the franchise. A classic game for the players, the newly reissued version of Flaschback 2 gets a facelift on its 30th Anniversary, in "2.5D" - following his victory over the Master Brain in the first episode, Conrad and his allies are once again confronted with Morphs, whose modus operandi is to crush all civilization. The new OST was produced by Raphael Gesqua; with about one hundred original soundtracks created for video games or cinema since the beginning of the 90s, Gesqua reunites here with the one who got him started in the world of video games: Paul Cuisset, on Flashback: The Quest For Identity. Cuts from both versions of the game (Commodore and Amiga) appear as part of a rich soundtrack, swerving between cinematic music, electronics and synthwave ambiances. A must have for all science fiction fans.

Review: There are back stories, and then there's Chess of the Wind. Sheila Gharachedaghi's remarkable movie soundtrack wouldn't be here today if it weren't for the fact the movie itself - a 1976, pre-revolutionary Iranian queer-gothic-class-horror masterpiece - had been banned in its homeland and presumed lost forever, until a copy turned up in an antique shop. That was 2014, and six years later it was re-released, having benefited from restoration by the Martin Scorsese Film Foundation. A remarkable insight not just into a society long since lost, but its pitfalls and problems, to accompany this Gharachedaghi combines classical Persian instrumentation and atonal dissonance, traditional melodies and experimental moods for a score that's just as much of a landmark.

Review: Filmed over two nights at LA's Kia Forum, boasting Tobias Forge's charismatic stage presence and a setlist dominated by recent hits, this is a great example for how powerful the band is overall. Tracks like 'Kaisarion' and 'Watcher in the Sky' shine, especially with powerful choral backing and the haunting saxophone solo in 'Miasma.' The show balances theatrical spectacle and genuine warmth, with Forge's message of kindness resonating amid the glitz. While the setlist focuses on newer material, omitting earlier cult classics from Opus Eponymous and Infestissumam, Rite Here Rite Now still delivers a full-bodied, exhilarating experience. New track 'The Future Is a Foreign Land' closes the album on a high, blending retro vibes with catchy melodies and reinforcing Ghost's evolution toward melodic accessibility. A perfect blend of their recent material and their talent at performing them live with a great production.

The music, too, always manages to reach new levels as did this, the original soundtrack for the 2017 version, Spider-Man: Homecoming, by Michael Giacchino. It is full of dramatic and wide-screen orchestration, sweeping strings and rousing musical adventure but also the more quiet moments of reflection and tenderness. This version comes with a poster in a deluxe sleeve on blue vinyl.

Review: Michael Giacchino, a decorated Academy Award-r winning composer, delivers a commanding yet tender score for J.A. Bayona's moving film The Society of the Snow. It recounts the harrowing true tale of the 1972 Uruguayan flight that crashed in the remote Andes, and the ensuing battle for survival. Amid despair, the film champions hope which is a sentiment echoed in Giacchino's emotionally charged score. Balancing poignancy with optimism, the music navigates a delicate path that amplifies the film's power. Bayona and Giacchino's collaboration yields a cinematic masterpiece that will surely resonate as one of the year's most compelling narratives.

Review: Michael Giacchino's score for 'Lost: Season 1' did plenty to add to the cult shows mystical appeal. Released originally in 2006 and now arriving via Craft across four sides of vinyl, the soundtrack weaves a rich tapestry of emotion, mystery and adventure with Giacchino's evocative compositions capturing the essence of the show's enigmatic island setting and enhancing the drama and suspense of each episode. The main theme, with its haunting strings and ethereal melodies, became synonymous with the series and contributed to its atmospheric allure. Giacchino's ability to create a musical landscape that mirrors the show's complexity makes this a standout soundtrack of its kind.

Review: Star Trek has been on a tumultuous ride over the years. To paraphrase Wayne Campbell, of Wayne's World fame, in many ways The Next Generation was superior to the original series, but will always struggle to match the recognition of its source material. More recent shows in the franchise looked to expand the viewer base, following in the wake of the saga's modern films, but in doing so kind of lost the friendly, campish mild peril we love this universe for. Star Trek: Into Darkness was a case in point - it's not fun, it's not light, it's not particularly thoughtful. As a movie, it lives up to the promise of darkness. In terms of how this translates onto the score, expect seriously moody and atmospheric big screen compositions, rather than the jaunty soundtracks that once defined this institution.

Review: Brian Gibson has worn a few hats. All of them of high musicality and thoroughly innovative. To some, he's best known as bassist for the legendary duo, Lightning Bolt. For others, he's the guy behind a slew of fantastic video game soundtracks and compositions. Not least 2016's epic, Thumper. No prizes for guessing where this is going, Thrasher is the long-awaited sequel, marking his return to virtual reality worlds. The game itself has been described as "a mind-melting arcade action odyssey and visceral audiovisual experience", and when you learn the whole thing sees players following a weird space insect as it evolves and mutates, that quote seems less wild and conceptual. Alas, we digress. In terms of tunes, you could be forgiven for thinking Thrasher is a stand alone album, one that uses elements of IDM, ambient, bass, and more to fuse a highly immersive and inescapable electronic triumph.

Review: "What causes a man who has everything to jeopardise his comfort, career and relationship?" High brow movie streaming service MUBI has a habit of asking difficult questions of its audience, although the answer in this case is actually very simple - 5 Hectares of land in Limoges, France. Emilie Deleuze's delightfully quirky - and therefore thoroughly human and honest - comedy is about just that; one guy's dream of owning a plot in stunning serenity, and what he's willing to lose for it. Bobby Gillespie might be something of an outsider choice to score the flick, if it didn't make perfect sense to draft one of indie rock & roll's true eccentric enigmas. Best known as the voice and front face of the mighty Primal Scream, what's here isn't really that, but it's just as broad, varied and forward thinking. From loopy jazzy beats to strange chants, whispered balladry and compressed lo-fi hip hop.

Review: The 2002 film The Hours starred hefty Hollywood talents Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, and the original score was composed by no lesser titan of his industry than Philip Glass. It is a masterful work from the legendary minimal composer and is here presented across four sides of vinyl by the Nonesuch label. It has plenty of thick, lush strings and lots of tonal suspension with cool piano parts, plenty of heavily pregnant silences and cascading scales that all add plenty to the film itself as well as being a great standalone listen.

Review: If you love cinematic soundtracks then they don't come much finer than Goblin's music for Dario Argento's film Profondo Rosso (which means deep red.) Made in 1974 and released a year later, it finds both at the height of their powers and results in a true musical masterpiece despite being originally commissioned to jazzman Giorgio Gaslini. Instead., the younger foursome of Claudio Simonetti who played keys, Massimo Morante on guitars, Fabio Pignatelli on bass and stickman Walter Martino were all given the gig and served up plenty of high speed jazz-funk thrillers, dark and menacing melodies and fusions of Italian music, progressive rock, jazz-rock and much more.

Review: Talk about a cultural Tardis, Doctor Who ranks among the most longstanding love affairs British TV viewers have ever had with a work of science fiction, ranking up there with global phenomena such as Star Trek in terms of legions of faithful fans and decade-spanning sagas. After a small blip of obscurity in the mid-late-1990s and immediate post-millennium years, the show rebooted and reconfigured for the 21st Century in 2005, and hasn't left the common conscience since.

The score is certainly something to do with that resonance. As far as theme tunes go, Doctor Who's may not still be the most forward thinking (as it was back in 1963), but it's easily up there in the premier league of iconic. On this live rendition of music from the latter-day Series 1 & 2 that theme remains as impactful, while a talented entourage of players and conductors also help us remember just how consistent the music is overall.

Review: The 1999 supernatural horror film The Haunting, gets a new life with its first-ever vinyl release of Jerry Goldsmith's unsettling score. This Deluxe Edition 2-LP set, featuring a Black/Gold/Gray swirl design, is adorned with fresh artwork by Sina Grace, adding a visually striking touch to the bone-chilling music. Goldsmith, a legendary composer with an extensive resume, was the ideal choice to create the film's soundscape. His music goes beyond typical horror tropes, weaving a tapestry of eerie, atmospheric tension that enhances the film's haunted narrative. Known for his work on iconic films like Alien, Chinatown, Star Trek and Poltergeist, Goldsmith brought his deep understanding of mood and emotion to The Haunting, crafting a score that feels both eerie and sophisticated. The score's haunting melodies and unsettling rhythms create a feeling of lurking danger, perfectly capturing the film's ghostly themes. Critics have praised the soundtrack for its ability to evoke fear and suspense without resorting to cliches. Having this soundtrack on vinyl, brings the soundtrack alive in an elevated way.

Review: In the grand tradition of devilish offspring on film, has there even been one as powerfully creepy as little Damien in The Omen? The film may show its age these days, but the Gregory Peck-starring horror remains an all-time classic, and that's in no small part down to Jerry Goldsmith's score. Just listen to the eerie choral chants opening up 'Ave Satani' and feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. This seminal horror soundtrack has now been repressed on a limited blood red and black splattered vinyl, all the better to channel your own demons from the comfort of your home.

Review: Earnest, atmospheric, romantic-gothic guitar pieces from Alain Goraguer, whose Rare Soundtracks & Lost Tapes hears a collection never heard before on vinyl. Goraguer is best known as a collaborator and ghostwriter of Serge Gainsbourg, as well as the scoring composer for the surrealist sci-fi animation film Fantastic Planet. At around the same time of the making of these two indelible compositions, Goraguer also wrote two similar, but less publicly-oriented scores, both of which appear on this record in a back-to-back fashion. An array of breathy flutes, eerie backing synth counterpoints, and shaky percussions all combine to cloud the glasses on this beautifully bittersweet album-length hypnosis.

As well as the stunning sci-fi action on screen, the series is also notable for the striking soundtrack from Swedish composer Ludwig Goransson, and now you can score a highly collectable edition of that very work thanks to this awesome picture disc. With the titular hero's helmet on one side, and of course wee little Grogu in his hover basket thing on the other, this is one that will look as good on the shelf as it will sound on the platter.

Review: Barry Gray's original tapes were the sound source for this newly mastered Captain Scarlet soundtrack. It followed on from the cult classic TV series Thunderbirds and its theme tune was a big 7" on Pye label back in 1967. Now a whole bunch of the music from the show has been collected together across two limited edition, translucent red slabs of vinyl that will be hugely desirable for those who love to collect the more unusual records out there. The eerie electronics, suspenseful passages of ambient and curious library sounds are interspersed with plenty of spoken word snippets which make this a surprisingly involving listen.

Review: Joe 90 is a stone cold classic of the genre for many animation fans of a certain age. The soundtrack is part of what made it so special and is also one of the finest works amongst very many from composer Barry Gray. It is full of jazzy orchestrations and swopping strings, high speed instrumental funk chases and dramatic horns. There is light and dark, tension and release along the way that makes it as thrilling to listen to as the show was to watch. Here the complete soundtrack gets served up on limited gatefold 'jet car green' vinyl.

Review: Jonny Greenwood is of course best known for his work with Radiohead, but like all members of that particular band he has side projects. The latest was soaring the music for the film The Power of the Dog. The result is a dark, absorbing and disturbing listen to accompany Jane Campion's Western with Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead as a difficult cowboy in early 20th-century Montana. It is Greenwood's third movie soundtrack this year alone with Pablo Larrain's "Spencer" about Princess Diana already out and next up Paul Thomas Anderson's "Licorice Pizza" arrives before the end of the month.

Review: It would be pushing it to say many of us were expecting Pablo Larrain's movie about Princess Diana to be the way it was. Or is. In fact, it would be pushing it to say anyone was expecting any film to ever be made about the late-British royal in such a surrealist way. Nevertheless, Spencer is a bonafide work of art and a creative triumph. As such it was always going to come with a great score.

At the risk of repeating ourselves, though, it would also be pushing it to say people predicted just how incredible Jonny Greenwood's soundtrack was, and is as a standalone record. It's the sound of free jazz meeting the baroque tones of a palatial dance. It's the noise of uncertainty, exclusion, difference, and struggle, married to an atmosphere of sophistication and refinement. It's a trip. It's a classic.

Grusin's intent to approach the comedic affair seriously resulted in a thematic and delightful score that captures the film's eclectic nature. Paying homage to British murder-mystery roots while pushing boundaries, Grusin created a unique and charming musical landscape. This timeless Peanuts special, created by Charles Schulz and directed by Phil Roman, is brought to life with Guaraldi's signature jazz-infused compositions, including beloved pieces like 'Peppermint Patty'. 'Easter Theme' and 'Snoopy and Woodstock'. This vinyl edition has been mixed and mastered from the original 2" session tapes to ensure audiophile quality, providing an enhanced listening experience for fans of jazz and Peanuts. 'Woodstock's Medley', features pianist David Benoit with original Guaraldi sidemen Seward McCain (bass) and Mike Clark (drums), recorded fifty years later at the same Hyde Street studio in San Francisco. Guaraldi's score, with its elegant title theme, playful take on Beethoven and the infectious 'Woodstock's Dream', is something for all listeners. The album's warm analogue sound brings the Easter classic to life in a way that's sure to delight both long-time fans and newcomers.

Review: It has been five long decades since the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode first hit US TV screens. Originally aired in 1973, the show proved beyond any doubt that Peanuts was the coolest and most sophisticated cartoon of the day, and that's in no small part down to the original scores, which were the responsibility of Vince Guaraldi, and all of which are worth picking up if you see copies on sale.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving has never been available on record before, having only recently been rediscovered in the vaults and then primed for this autumn 2023 debut. Remixed and remastered to elevate some of the details that had been lost in the old recordings, tracks run between lounge jazz and soul funk, with 'Little Birdie' arguably the pick of the lot (and not just because it stands out with those iconic vocals).

Review: Composers, writers, multi-instrumentalists, TV and movie producers. In the grand schemes of lives you which you'd led, Guido and Maurizio De Angelis are certainly up there. The multifarious Italian creatives, sometimes known as Oliver Onions, epitomise the risk taking and daring that dominated culture during their most prominent years, the late-1970s and early-1980s, seemingly wanting to try everything, exceed in as much as possible, and constantly experiment. The score to Squadra Antifurto, or Hit Squad in English, is a case in point. At times, it feels like we're gazing adoringly at the Beautiful Country itself, accordions and organs ringing out, often in jaunty, uptempo forms, or more sombre, or at last reflective tunes. At other times, it's a staccato cacophony of drama, high tempo sonic collages that do their best to drive us to the next scene. You won't forget it in a hurry.

Review: The soundtrack to Graham Eatough's stage adaptation of David Keenan's novel, This Is Memorial Device, composed by Stephen Pastel - of Kurt Cobain faves The Pastels fame - and Gavin Thomson, offers a compelling third iteration of the book's myth. Fusing reworked home recordings from the era with expanded versions of music originally scored for the theatre production, the album captures the essence of Glasgow's post-punk scene from 1978 to 1986. Tracks like 'Introduction To Why I Did It' and 'We Have Sex' evoke a sense of youthful hope and creativity, reflecting the play's exploration of art, music, and romance in small-town Scotland. Directed by Julian House, the video for 'We Have Sex' adds a vibrant visual dimension to the DIY aesthetic of the era. This Is Memorial Device: Music from the Stage Play not only complements the book and stage adaptation but also stands on its own torch for the spirit of post-punk and the power of belief in the transformative potential of art.

Review: Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's soundtrack for the 2024 thriller drama Civil War is a triumph of atmospheric soundscaping. Known for their work on Ex Machina, the duo brings their signature touch to this film, blending ambient synths with subtle guitar to create an immersive auditory experience. The score, perfectly complements the film's intense narrative and striking visuals. Tracks like 'Body Pit' deliver a haunting, dissonant edge, while 'Flashback,' 'Aftermath,' and 'Moving Out' offer a poignant, minimalist theme that subtly underscores the emotional journey of the characters. The music's simplicity and repetitive motifs evoke a powerful sense of place and mood, making it an essential companion to the film's story. Now available on vinyl for the first time, this score is for fans of the innovative film music and those who appreciate Salisbury and Barrow's evocative style.
