Review: It's been some three years since Phil Mison last graced the world with some original material as Cantoma, and fans will be glad to hear that the producer is preparing a third album for release in October. Some advance insight into how it will turn out is afforded with this limited 12" release of lead single Alive that features the silky vocal talents of Bing Ji Ling. The crooning alter ego of fuzzy headed Phenomenal Handclap Band member Quinn Luke, Bing Ji Ling is the perfect vocal foil to Mison's guitar flecked arrangement which is bound to feature on many an upcoming Balearic compilation. On the flip Mison's Reverso 69 partner in crime Pete Herbert delivers a glistening discoid take on "Just Landed".

Review: A mighty fine collaboration is facilitated by Kill The DJ here as Tel Aviv duo Red Axes team up with Chloe 'C.A.R.' Raunet for the suitably titled Car Axes 12" - we hope this is the start of a beautiful and long-lasting musical relationship! The three original tracks here were seemingly laid down in various locations in Tel Aviv and London, but what unifies them is the ease with which Red Axes and Raunet evidently feel working together. Modern cold wave is hard to pull off but this trio achieve it with a degree of nonchalance that would impress the genre's early 80s pioneers! Il Est Vilaine and Horrors man Tom Furse contribute fine revisions of "Incognito" with the latter's Cosmic Dub particularly rewarding in it's widescreen panorama.

Review: Valerie Carter, the late Southern California vocalist, is reimagined in a stunning new remake of the Faragher Brothers' 1976 classic, 'Never Get Your Love Behind Me.' This superb outing revives Carter's original 1977 vocals intended for her Columbia Records album, Wild Child. Producer Kathy Kurasch and Carter's sister Jan discovered the unreleased material and paired Carter's isolated vocals with the current Faragher Brothers band. The B-side features a new recording of James Brown's 'What My Baby Needs Now' using Carter's live 1976 performance. This single, which perfectly celebrates Carter's legacy, is available on a 7" vinyl courtesy of Record Store Day 2024.

Review: Collignon brings some real class to this new one on Bongo Joe Records. It is a tidy two-track 45rpm that is best described as psychedelic tropical. Opener 'Viemos De Longe' is a dense and busy mix of warped synth wobbles and steamy jungle effects, humid pads and mystic melodies that take you deep into overgrown flora where all manner of birds and frogs await with their weird and wonderful calls. Add in some psyched-out rock guitars and a sense of 60s spy theme funk and you have a marvellous cut. Flip it over for further sonic fun in the form of the magical 'Visita Noturna.'

Review: The always refreshing Phantasy Sounds label does their bit for the Keep Vinyl Alive campaign with a rather special twelve inch version of the delightfully obscure "Forever Dolphin Love" from Connan Mockasin - check the bizarro video too! Naturally the presence of an Erol Alkan remix is big news and the Phantasy boss has delivered perhaps his finest work in some time, subtly twisting the introspective ode to porpoises into a burning, cosmic, late night jam that clocks in at ten glorious minutes. Far removed from the more abrasive dancefloor workouts Alkan has been indulging in of late, it's a tantalising example of his forever blossoming production skills. In addition the vastly under rated Mickey Moonlight goes deep on a remix which sounds like Mockasin is reciting the track from the depths of an ocean, with some particularly excellent stretched out effects. Housed on a totally clear twelve inch, this is special from top to bottom.

Review: Disco-funk excursionists Cro-Magnon have become notable references within the ever-widening world of tribal, percussive dance music. It seems only natural that they should be remixed by like-minded artists such as the Idjut Boys, a London duo comprised of Conrad McDonnell and Dan Tyler, who have been avid remixers of everyone from Chez Damier to Lindstrom. On the A-Side, the main remix is a true voyage into the world of synthesizers, bongos and molding drum slices, one which will take a new shape with every listen. The dub mix on the B-side takes a different approach and delves deeper into the percussion, stopping and starting continuously, riding in and out of breaks and rumbling basslines. Great takes on the original!

Review: Claremont 56 continue their mission to release unheard Holger Czukay rarities to the world with this two track EP, recorded between 1978 and 1984, during the period when CAN were utilising the Innerspace Studio in Cologne less frequently, but Czukay and drummer Jaki Liebezeit continued to experiment together. These tracks were largely created using recordings from an old dictaphone, looped and tinkered with by Czukay. As a consequence these tracks are as weightless as the EP's title suggests, with the avan-garde rhythms of "In Space" and broken guitar melodies of "Secret Life" both providing some particularly haunting moments. As with Claremont 56's previous Czukay release, the sleeve is hand numbered, and the record comes on beautiful white vinyl.
