The Strut label have done it again, people. Known for digging up some of the most obscure and interesting material from around the globe - both musically and culturally - the label sits alongside the likes of London's Honest Jon's Records in its ability to pull out unheard material from thin air. This time, we have a compilation of Mauritius' Sega music, a local kind of blues music that has its roots in traditional African music started by slaves of plantations who were looking for greener pastures. The 60's saw the explosion of the genre, and throughout this collection of tunes, you'll hear influences from just about any genre across the soul spectrum. There's psych, Afro beat, Ethiopian funk, and Fela-style chanting. It's a truly remarkable release, and it comes warmly recommended. This could well be up there in the top ten for 2016's world charts... and it's only February!
