"I Wanna Be Where You Are" was a song written by Arthur Ross and Leon Ware in 1972 for Michael Jackson. It was a chart topping hit during his early solo career with Motown. This song would be one of Jackson's most covered songs - with everyone from Zulema, Willie Hutch, Jason Weaver and The Fugees doing renditions. Ware and Ross also penned the classic Marvin Gaye hit, "I Want You" several years afterwards. On Gaye's cover in '76, it was more of an instrumental excerpt for him, singing the title and dedicating the track to his then-girlfriend and children. The alternate instrumental, later issued on a 2003 deluxe edition re-release of the album, was a funk-styled instrumental that featured his background vocals throughout the track, which was also produced by Ware.
