Review: Originally conceived in 2019 during a tour with industrial hardcore purveyors Uniform, Japanese psychedelic noise-rock juggernauts Boris would invite their co-conspirators on stage to reimagine the trio's classic "Akuma no Uta" as part of their encore, with the resulting chemistry inspiring both acts to begin crafting a fully collaborative album. Many years of exchanging ideas from one home studio base to another has finally bore fruit in the form of the hideous yet glorious Bright New Disease. Combining almost every nuance of each group's genre-less machinations, the project swells and extends in every sonic direction from harsh walls of screeching noise to retrofitted Japanese D-beat hardcore, with time in between for aquatic, shoegazing serenity and mechanized industrial venom.

Review: Bring Me The Horizon were once known as Nottingham's emo-fringed MySpace deathcore scene kids, but the near two decades since have seen them balloon into the latest gateway mainstream metal outfit, taking the reins from the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars and Linkin Park before them. Returning with the highly anticipated sequel to their 2020 nu-metal-centric 'Post Human: Survival Horror' EP, their seventh album (and first proper full-length since 2018's Amo) Post Human: Nex Gen does its utmost to level up on every front just like a true sequel should. Condensing practically every sonic well the group have previously toe-dipped into one noxious bucket of hallucinogenic fluidity, the material here might make numerous nods to their metalcore and post-hardcore beginnings, but that's only to calm the trip with familiarity before being utterly doused in swathes of everything from pop-punk to trap, hyperpop, nightcore and even Anime music. Best described as "ADHD maximalism", the band and project make no qualms over its self-professed over-stuffed, chaotic, messy, obnoxious, overwhelming nature, though it's nearly impossible not to be impressed by the effortless fusions on display at every sonic turn. Their final work with longtime keyboardist/programmer/producer Jordan Fish, while offering a bevvy of dichotomous features from the likes of Aurora, Lil Uzi Vert, Underoath and Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw and Head Automatica, the Post Human saga continues to rage through the mainstream and underground metal and punk circles like a coked-up unicorn, simply too farcical to be fucked with. Where the trip takes us on Part 3 is, for now, anyone's absurd guess.

Review: Seven years after Bullet For My Valentine first formed under the name Jeff Killed John, they finally dropped a debut album. Gone were the Nirvana and Metallica covers that had defined the band's first incarnation, and in was a more melodic and poppier take on thrash and heavy metal. Going on to sell in excess of 1.6million copies between its initial release in 2005 and 2018, it remains BFMV's most commercially successful outing, earning them gold certification by the US RIAA and UK BPI, and platinum in the eyes of Germany's BVMI. If all this is news to you, perhaps we should start with some references. One for fans of Funeral For A Friend, Alexisonfire and more glossy emo-hued metal groups, it doesn't take long to realise why praise was heaped on The Poison, and the musicians, for their powerhouse riffs and unapologetically loud aesthetic.

Review: Of course Rift Canyon was recorded during the autumnal equinox of 1997. Burning Witch rarely did anything that wasn't 'aligned' in some way, invoking spirits through the merciless power of sludge-heavy doom metal that sounds as though you've wandered into the ritualistic practice of a group that are pretty sinister but unarguably captivating and intoxicating. Recorded two years after the band formed from the decay of Thorr's Hammer, and less than 12 months before they themselves called time, Rift Canyon sees a reissue the same week as the outfit's seminal 'Towers' EP, and in many ways it's only when you hear them as a pair that either really hits properly. Individually, this one may not have garnered quite the attention its predecessor did, but diving in again in retrospect proves just how vital and immersive it is.

Review: Oooof. Now there's an introduction you want to hear in the darkened pit of some brick-walled basement, the distinct smell of incense, real ale and stale weed smoke clinging to the military jacket of a faceless person in front. Burning Witch may only have been a relatively short-lived doom metal project, but they made enough noise to still be remembered today, almost 30 years after disbandment. Kicking, screaming and sludging out of Seattle in 1995, resurrected from the carcass of Thorr's Hammer, the Towers EP is up there with their finest moments. Produced by the legendary Steve Albini (engineer on landmark albums such as the Pixies' Surfer Rosa and In Utero by Nirvana), it's scuzzy, dark, sneering stuff that doesn't let go once it's skeletal hand reaches for your throat.

Review: Following on from the blistering re-recorded versions of Sepultura's debut EP Bestial Devastation, and album Morbid Visions originally released in 1985/86, the rebranded Cavalera Conspiracy project boasting both brothers Max and Igor (now going by Cavalera), double down with a newly recorded re-release of their seminal 1987 sophomore effort Schizophrenia. Noted as the first work to begin embracing their more prominent thrash meets melodic death metal style, while eschewing the blackened Celtic Frost worship of their earlier material, this is the album where Sepultura first discovered their own true sonic identity removed from their bevvy of influences. Refined, feral and rebuilt from the ground up with a polish that provides clarity yet doesn't detract from the danker qualities of the original recordings, Cavalera continue their quest to reclaim their Sepultura output, seemingly one title at a time.

Review: With their 2022 debut LP God's Country, the herald of the true face and voice for modern middle-American malaise came in the form of noise-rock/sludge metal purveyors Chat Pile. Broadcasting from their muted home of Oklahoma City, their deformed sonic mutations pulled equally from The Jesus Lizard, Acid Bath and Korn, while vocalist Raygun Busch (that is his credited moniker) appalled and harrowed with his spoken-word nightmare poetics touching on everything from homelessness and the opioid crisis, to real-life recounts of botched robberies and first-person narratives from horror film characters such as the mother of Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th. Expanding their scope both conceptually and compositionally, Cool World takes aim at the entire planet with classism, the horrors of war and genocide, the very real potential for abuse stemming from toxic masculinity, capitalist lies and the nihility of existence all as topics of discussion, while still making time for backwoods journeys into serial killer's isolated farm homes. Musically continuing to pummel with industrial abrasion and hypnotic groove, sonically the band have begun to embrace their sludge-core tendencies while channelling nuanced elements of alternative metal and goth rock, offering new painstaking modes of vulnerability to drive home their despair-laden character studies. Mark our words, there isn't one single other metal/punk/alternative album in 2024 that slaps this hard while instilling such a cold feeling of visceral dread and fear for our ever-despondent cool world.

Review: 2022 saw the unlikely glow up of the one of the most sonically unhinged and conceptually hideous newcomers of recent times - Chat Pile. Hailing from the muted middle-America of Oklahoma City, their debut LP God's Country found itself on many an out-of-place end of year list, with its harrowing concoction of sludge metal, noise-rock and spoken word diatribes based around everything from the opioid and housing crises to first-person recounts of revenge from Jason Voorhees's mother of Friday the 13th fame. In short, it was a caustic, horror-indebted debut about how utterly fucked the US is, and now with their platform and exposure majorly expanded, Chat Pile return to take the entire globe to task for its follies on the deformed, multi-headed behemoth bastard of a sophomore effort that is Cool World. Furthering their signature sludgecore down the mire of audible hubris, yet incorporating elements of swaggering grunge and sultry goth-rock, here the unassuming, deplorable four-piece make their indelible mark on the extreme music underground and make it abundantly clear that God's Country was only the beginning of their Babylonian death chants.

With 2022's God's Country, Oklahoma City sludge metal/noise rock manglers Chat Pile took the underground music scene by the throat and dragged it through the twisted drug addled, decrepit, destitute annals of modern middle America. Returning two years on from their major glow up that saw them land on numerous end of year list that usually wouldn't touch their brand of hubris sonics with a ten foot pole, their sophomore endeavour Cool World trades the initial narrow view of the woes of their home country for the rotting globe at large, taking religion, politicians and narcissistic everyday people to task for their ignorance, malice and docile attitudes which are leading to a culmination of no more cool world for any of us. Expanding their sonic scope to draw on more melodious grunge and sultry goth-rock, while tapping outside production help this time around to make their heaving industrial-tinged noise-sludge bombast even more stomach churning, LP2 makes bad on all of Chat Pile's initial, unsettling promise, with a nauseating feeling that they'll be narrating our end times for as long as there are ears to listen.

Review: The self-titled debut studio album by Jacksonville-based rock band Cold, originally released in 1998. Discovered by A&R man Fred Durst (from Limp Bizkit), Cold burst onto the scene with this potent blend of raw emotion, haunting melodies, and powerful instrumentation. Led by vocalist Scoot Ward, the band quickly garnered attention for their introspective lyrics and intense live performances. With a variegated nu-metal sound - the listener is only first thrust into an ostensibly incendiary sound with 'Go Away', both satisfyingly crisp and grungey in equal measure, before finding respite in the more temperate moments that pepper the record, as on 'Ugly' or 'Strip Her Down' - Cold recalls every influence between Alice In Chains and Type O Negative, and nestles a palpably unique sense of longing in the cracks between the otherwise more prescriptive pillars of the grunge style.

Review: Originally released in 2005 as the follow up to the more accessible, melodious alt rock endeavour that was 2000's America's Volume Dealer, the seventh full-length from Raleigh, North Carolina stoner/sludge legends Corrosion Of Conformity, boasting the epic title In The Arms Of God, would take a half decade of introspection and self-reappraisal to materialise. Rediscovering their incomparable knack for hefty trudging riffs that displace the Louisiana bayou blues to caverns of beer-soaked sludge, for many the album signalled a return to form with both critics and avid fans celebrating the band's more corrosive elements once again. The only project not to feature drummer Reed Mullin as this was during his sabbatical from the group, while most notably being the final work with primary songwriter and overall mastermind Pepper Keenan until his glorious return on 2018's No Cross No Crown.

Review: Self-described "putrid, drug-fueled gutter rock from the filthy streets of NYC", Couch Slut deal in ugliness, and boy is business a-boomin'! Meshing the most challenging facets of grindcore, hardcore punk, noise rock and black metal, the resulting cacophony is as unpleasant as it is impenetrable, yet the commanding presence of vocalist and primary songwriter Megan Osztrosits demands you suffer the audible torment while she details harrowing depictions of sexual violence, drug abuse and more singular inner-city horrors through subversive, vitriolic and grimly humoured phrases. Working with industrial hardcore manglers Uniform's Ben Greenberg (with previous production credits for Drab Majesty, Portrayal of Guilt, Metz), You Could Do It Tonight marks the fourth overall full-length from the group, and utterly refuses to dilute or smoothen their ethos of audibly healing through pain, or just pain for the fuck of it.

Frontman Dani Filth's distinctive vocals drive the narrative as he explores the usual themes of witchcraft and persecution. The album features blistering guitar work, symphonic elements, and relentless drumming that together create a haunting and aggressive soundscape. Almost a decade on, Hammer of the Witches still stands as a powerful testament to Cradle of Filth's ability to evolve while staying true to their dark, theatrical roots.

Review: Creed's Human Clay 25th Anniversary reissue on grey smoked vinyl celebrates the 1999 album that catapulted the band to global stardom. With its anthemic lead single 'Higher,' which spent 57 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, and other rock staples like 'What If' and 'With Arms Wide Open,' this album defined the post-grunge era. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 20 million copies, Human Clay became a defining soundtrack of its time. The gatefold double LP reissue offers a nostalgic look back at Creed's monumental success, making it a coveted collector's item for fans of the rock scene of the late 90s and early 2000s.

Review: Originally released in 2012, the self-titled seventh full-length from Canadian technical death metal legends Cryptopsy marked their second with vocalist Matt McGachy who replaced iconic OG frontman Lord Worm following his return for 2005's career height Once Was Not. In between these LPs was McGachy's introduction on 2008's much maligned The Unspoken King, which saw the band pivot to a more frenetic deathcore style vehemently rejected by their core fanbase. Gauging fan interaction, the apt decision to backpedal on this perceived creative misstep saw a return to their head-melting, dexterous form of hyper-complex, brutal tech-death, allowing the diehards to finally appreciate the versatility and tortured aggression of the new vocalist on a more sonically familiar outing, so much so that it felt only fitting for the project to bare a self-titled moniker. Regardless of vocalist preference, this is undeniably Cryptopsy in all of their nigh-impenetrable, horrific glory.

Review: Th eighth full-length from former Misfits horror-crooner Glenn Danzig's solo project/band served as their first LP to not carry a number, following 777: I Luciferi which angled itself as the closing work of that initial seven volume sequence. Originally released in 2004, Circle Of Snakes continues the descent of Danzig into a rawer, more abrasive form of metallic leaning gothic hard rock, with a notable lowering of vocals in the mix in order to elevate the churning jaggedness of the instrumental rumble. Continuing to eschew the more industrial programming of previous Danzig entries and echoing the stripped back approach of 'Danzig 1' and the increased heaviness of the aforementioned Luciferi, the album would also mark the first appearance of Tommy Victor of Prong on guitars, helping to aid the audible malevolence and ultimately leading to one of the strongest contributions to Danzig's latter day 21st century output.

Now, more than 20 years on, this reissue is a reminder of Luciferi as a high watermark in the later work of one of the most controversial figures in metal, punk and hard rock.

Review: The long-gestating follow up to 1992's initial instalment, Black Aria II would finally arrive in 2006 after years of discussion from Misfits/Samhain horror-punk visionary Glenn Danzig, and further his exploration into the cavernous realms of modern classical dark ambience. Conceptually based around Lillith, the first wife of Adam, the material here is far more minimalist and starker than its gothic predecessor, while utilising a more varied array of instruments on top of the pre-established organ and strings, with more Eastern sonic influences to conjure a mercurial vision independent of the preceding volume. Complete with eerie chimes, chants and esoteric lamentations, the project marks one of Danzig's most intriguing works when compared to, say, his Elvis covers compilations, and offers a transportive, biblical, haunting narrative delivered almost exclusively via instrumental atmospherics and insidious gloom.

Review: Originally released in 1994, Transilvanian Hunger would serve as the fourth full-length from one of Norway's true black metal sons Darkthrone, who are often mentioned in the same frosted breath as Mayhem, Emperor, and Burzum (with controversial figure Varg Vikernes himself even penning the lyrics to four cuts on this very album). The band's first LP to be recorded as the duo of Nocturno Culto and Fenriz (a line-up they've maintained ever since) following the departure of Zephyrous the year prior, the project is often heralded as the final instalment of their quintessential trilogy beginning with 1992's A Blaze In The Northern Sky, and 1993's Under A Funeral Moon, while the year of its release also saw the sentencing of Burzum's Vikernes for the murder of Mayhem's Euronymous, marking an incredibly tumultuous time in the second wave Norwegian Black Metal scene that saw the genre garner exposure for all of the worst, yet macabrely fitting reasons. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this reissue comes on a limited "corona" black and white smash vinyl.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Following on from 2021's hard left turn into dream-pop territory on Infinite Granite, San Francisco blackgaze legends in the making Deafheaven return with a work that they've always been striving towards. Their sixth full-length, Lonely People With Power, takes lessons from the saccharine shoegaze of their previous outing and injects it directly into the veins of their heaviest material since 2015's New Bermuda, culminating in a deft balancing act that finally combines vocalist George Clarke's shrieking, inhumane howls with his recently discovered crooning lilt, exuded as such on the beautiful warring of styles that is 'Heathen'. Elsewhere, 'Magnolia' provides a cataclysmic beast of proggy black metal akin to latter-day Emperor whereas 'Doberman' goes full euphoric blackened shoegaze reminiscent of 2013's breakout sophomore triumph Sunbather. Striking a unique chord between their equal and effortless understanding of black metal malevolence and the ethereality of cinematic post-rock, the album sees a notable trade off from their their usual smaller collection of lengthy, grandiose tracks that all clock in at over ten minutes a piece in favour of a more varied, yet succinct and instantaneous batch of cuts, 12 in total, marking the most that any Deafheaven project has ever offered.

Review: An incendiary, iconoclastic album in the intersection of shoegaze, metal and post-rock, Sunbather by Deafheaven has more or less gone down in recent history as a supreme meme, one of those projects whose popularity on the Internet is more than likely to render it godlike status for decades to come. This remixed version is not a 'remix album' as received ideas of 'remixing' might suggest, but rather a full-blown re-mix and remaster by the band's very own Jack Shirley, who intends to continually bolster its monolithic status by giving a fresh sonic rundown. Most notably, this edition is tailored to spatial audio setups, so that the most obsessively audiophilic among us might bask in its newfound three-sixty-degree washes. That, too, comes with a new coloured vinyl pressing and freshly designed sleeves to boot.

Review: The mid-90s were a time of immense change for the death metal scene, strongly linked to the endless progression of the genre's most vital pioneers Death, who in retrospect, appeared to be reshaping, retooling and expanding the genre for their current and future peers in real time. Having already switched out the lyrical gore obsessions of their early material for the socio-political ponderings of 1990's Spiritual Healing, before turning to more opaque, introspective ruminations on their superbly technical, progressive death metal opus Human in 1991, a two-year gap would occur (a lengthy creative respite in terms of their prolificacy) before the arrival of 1993's Individual Thought Patterns. During this time, metal drumming legend Gene Hoglan (Testament, Fear Factory) would enter the mix along with King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque, and this newly refurbished line up would continue to build upon the virtuosic hyper-technical prog-death blueprint of Human, but with a major increase of oppressive, metallic menace, leading many to consider the work to be Death's most mercurial balance of artistic complexity and vicious heaviness.

Review: Originally released in 1998, The Sound of Perseverance would serve as the seventh and subsequently final full-length from death metal pioneers Death, before mastermind Chuck Schuldiner's untimely loss due to brain cancer-related complications in 2001. Noted for being the only work with this specific line-up, featuring guitarist Shannon Hamm, drummer Richard Christy, and bassist Scott Clendenin (all members of Schuldiner's equally brilliant but often overlooked side-project Control Denied), this final death breath of fluid progressive tech-death greatness can sometimes fall through the cracks of the band's impeccable discography, and be fobbed off as a latter day addition sans the original core members, but mark our words, even the last Death album puts most modern death metal attempts to utter shame.

Review: Following on from 1988's seminal sophomore triumph Leprosy, pioneering death metal forefathers Death entered into the 90s with a work that would shift perception on, not only their own project, but the entire genre as an entity. Released in 1990, Spiritual Healing marked a notable embracing of more melodious compositions, largely due to the presence of lead guitarist James Murphy, with this LP being his only contribution to the band's discography, along with bassist Terry Butler. Coinciding with the simultaneous maximisation of technicality and melody, the album would also shift the lyrical approach of primary songwriter Chuck Schuldiner, who began moving away from gore and viscera-soaked tales and focusing more on the real-world horrors of drug addiction, poverty, serial killers, organised religion and corrupt faith healers, just like the one that adorns the iconic artwork.

Following on from their pummelling self-titled 2015 debut and 2020's cinematic-storytelling breakout, Divine Filth, their latest opus Chaos and the Art of Motorcycle Madness trades retrofitted fuzzed out blues solos with heaving heft and sludging machinations, while remaining poignantly restrained by a devoted purpose to their signature brand of classic doom-psych mayhem.

Review: Some 19 years later (and not a moment too soon) this great compilation from Nu Metal legends Deftones is seeing its much-needed repress - with an added remastering to sweeten the deal. A tough record to find at a stomachable price for a while, 'B Sides & Rarities' is full of acoustic versions, demos and covers of the likes of The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, The Cure and - most amusingly - Sade. 'Wax and Wane' is a severely underrated cover, a wicked interpretation filled with punchy guitars and, of course, Chino Moreno's mastery of blending metal and new wave vocals. The most popular of the tracks on offer here is, without doubt, 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want', their cover of The Smiths' 1984 B-side to 'William It Was Really Nothing' . It's a rollercoaster of a cover, with a wild guitar solo and filled with the same rumbling, underlying sadness that made the original such a staple. Who doesn't love a melancholic metal song?

Review: No matter what type of project Deftones followed up their career-defining White Pony with, it was destined to disappoint at least some of their devout fanbase. Originally released in 2003, the band's self-titled fourth effort would mark their final collaborative project with iconic producer Terry Date (until reuniting for 2020's Ohms), while notably eschewing much of the "nu-metal" residue that still clung to their sonic makeup. Embracing elements of trip-hop and post-metal, while directly linking the group to the "are they or aren't they shoegaze?" debate which has loomed overhead ever since, the album has seen a steady reassessment from lacklustre follow up to underappreciated gem. With any luck, this reissue should continue to help highlight the cause as cuts such as 'Minerva' still soar with triumphant yet sultry hypnotics while 'Hexagram' serves as one of the heftiest cuts in the band's canon. It didn't even need an additional title. This is simply Deftones, and it still slaps two decades on.

Review: Rumour has it that only 15 cassette tapes were initially distributed of this rare demo collection, which earlier in 2024 was revealed to be the most expensive cassette tape ever sold on Discogs (going for a hefty $5,000), though the common consensus is that surely more exist out in the ether. Available digitally for years but now arriving on a remarkably limited run of wax, these demos also appeared on the (Like) Linus compilation CD and feature John Taylor on drums as Abe Cunningham would be in the midst of touring with his original alternative metal outfit Phallucy at the time of recording. Featuring the entire demo which pre-dates their 1995 debut Adrenaline LP, including cuts such as the aforementioned '(Like) Linus' as well as 'Hump', and 'Plastic', this expanded version also boasts early takes of album tracks like 'Engine No. 9', and 'Nosebleed', painting one of the clearest pictures of the band's nu-metal teething phase while creatively and sonically striving to push those confines in a similar manner to early material from their peers in Incubus. Funky, jagged and raw, yet already exuding that signature sultry chaotic nuance, this collection is so OG that initial copies even labelled the band as The Deftones.

The Mandrake Project is the singer's seventh studio solo album in total and the most long awaited too. 'Afterglow of Ragnarok' was the first single released prior to the album and received a great response for the song's heavy sound and catchy chorus, while another single, 'Rain on the Graves', sees Bruce delivering a narrative style of lyric not a million miles from Maiden's 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner'. This Deluxe Edition comes in gatefold on 180-gram vinyl 2xLP.

Review: Originally released in 2004, Miss Machine would serve as the revitalised sophomore effort from mathcore visionaries The Dillinger Escape Plan. Following the departure of original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis after their groundbreaking 1999 debut LP Calculating Infinity, and their collaborative Irony Is A Dead Scene EP with Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Fantomas vocal absurdist Mike Patton, the band would enlist the hulking, feral Greg Puciato, a frontman with a far more intense shriek than his predecessor while also coming from the school of Patton's eccentric dynamism with his expansive range. The resulting work would chart an entirely new course for the collective, with Puciato retaining his presence throughout their next five full-lengths, while the newfound balancing act between dissonant, mind-melting polyrhythmic hardcore and avant-garde industrial jazz-prog, would become their future sonic playground. Yes, much of the Dillinger Escape Plan identity was carved out before Puciato's arrival, but Miss Machine is often cited as the album where all of the jagged, oddly shaped pieces finally fit into place.

Naturally devoid of peak prowess anthems such as 'Holy Diver', this collection is for the completionists, die-hards and those who actually paid enough attention throughout the years to mark the endearing amount of emotion and care that went into all of the output Ronnie James Dio would put his name on, all the way up his final years.

Review: Based out of Melbourne, Australia, Takiaya Reed (better known as Divide & Dissolve) is a one-woman monolithic force of industrial-tinged, neo-classical leaning instrumental doom metal. Originally a duo, 2023's fourth full-length Systemic marked the first effort from the project following the departure of percussionist Sylvie Nehill (of M?ori and White-Australian heritage), with guitarist/saxophonist Reed (of Tsalagi and African-American heritage) embarking on a solo venture from there on out. Her second singular display of overtly political, droning sonic dread comes in the form of Insatiable, which coalesces mercurial beauty with bombastic abrasion, almost as if sonically illustrating the warring of mindsets active in our collective conscious. From drawing ire back in 2018 for their controversial music video for 'Resistance' which featured spitting and spraying urine-coloured water on monuments of colonial figures such as Captain James Cook and John Batman, Reed has made it clear ever since that their punishing instrumentals are designed with the artful intention of "decolonising, decentralising, disestablishing, and destroying white supremacy", which she makes overwhelming ends to accomplish without a single word uttered.

Review: Yet another addition to Rhino Records’ Start Your Ear Off Right series hears a reissue of prog metal band Dream Theater’s fifth studio album and first ever concept album. A sequel to the thrillingly titled Metropolis-Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper, this record builds an intensive recollective sonic theatre out of the mosaic themes of memory and depersonalisation. Themed around the subject of a young man undergoing past life regression therapy, the record is a compelling, initially psychotic howl into the night, and yet it proves an ultimately integrative, recursive experience, adding themes of murderousness and prophetic fate.

Following mastermind Thomas Thorn's departure from My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, 'Burn, Baby, Burn!', would serve as the birth of edgy ideals, delivered with sonic abandon and tongue located firmly in cheek, while samples of low budget horror movies as well as invoking Satanic church founder Anton LaVey, served as the hysteric cherry on top of the dodgy sundae, designed to provoke and bemuse in equal measure. LaVey would later go on to ordain Thorn as a priest of the Satanic church, but that's a story for another time.

Review: Before 'In The Nightside Eclipse' cemented their place amongst the decrepit, controversial hierarchy of black metal, Emperor's self-titled debut EP bore the first semblance of the bleak greatness to which they would eventually aspire. Featuring earlier versions of fan essentials such as 'Wrath of the Tyrant', and, 'I Am The Black Wizards', the caustic conjured sonics of the Norwegian landscape evoke a macabre essence far beyond the members' ludicrously young age. Before controversy, murder and church burnings would become the primary point of contention within the scene, Insahn and his cohorts were teaming with frosted vision from the outset. This debut simply serves as mere proof.

Review: Swedish death metal gang Entombed made an immediate impact with the release of their debut album all the way back in 1980. It is a soot-black verse with plenty of Satanic overtones, not least the title which refers to the Left-Hand Path belief system, which is itself discussed in Anton LaVey's book The Satanic Bible. The album is defined by its buzzsaw guitar tones and hardcore drums, with heavily detuned riffs getting thrashed out on each and every tune. Distortion also abounds and when you add in the guttural slurs of the vocals it all adds up to a proper death metal classic.

The wholly re-recorded release captures the grotesque atmosphere of its original conference but with added detail worked into the sounds. With these revamped compositions of fresh material rooted in their early style, plus sharpened production, these metal sounds hit harder than ever and thrive in morbid theatrics. Following on from their 2020 debut full-length Tub Of Lard and 2021's Exigent Circumstance EP, this self-titled sophomore effort continues their pummelling examination of a broken world and systemic prejudices through grinding, buzzsaw riffs and barrages of fuzzed out grooves that echo the likes of Melvins only if fed through a rusted woodchipper. Review: Originally released in 2014 and now celebrating its ten year anniversary, The Flesh Prevails would serve as the sophomore full-length from San Francisco based progressive death metal entity Fallujah. Heralded by many of the core fanbase to be both the band's finest work as well as the strongest of their initial three-album run with original vocalist Alex Hofmann before his departure following the release of 2016's Dreamless, there's a mercurial and poignant maturity to how the band approach their complex compositions. Coalescing aquatic, lysergic hues of buoyant prog soundscapes with dexterous, virtuosic levels of hyper technical death metal, their sonic maelstrom falls somewhere between the density of The Faceless, the brutality of Dying Fetus, and the expansive scope of Between The Buried & Me, resulting in a cosmic hybrid as transportive as it is oppressive.

Review: The first official album released through Ipecac Records; the label of absurdist vocalist extraordinaire Mike Patton (Faith No More, a million other projects), was this self-titled debut from Fantomas, originally unveiled in 1999. A supergroup with no absolutely zero desire to make it easy on listeners, this culmination of Melvins mastermind Buzz Osborne on guitar, Mr Bungle/Tomahawk/regular Patton cohort Trevor Dunn on bass and Slayer's Dame Lombardo behind the kit, would coalesce all of their most extreme creative proclivities into one bizarre maelstrom of avant-garde cacophony that can barely be fit into the metal genre. Intended as the musical accompaniment to a fictitious comic book, with all track titles even listed as chapter/page numbers (a unique theme that would follow into all subsequent albums), the work has since been praised for its sonic abandon and artistic fearlessness, with one critic once referring to their avant-garde jazzy grindcore as "dada-metal". The project would also finally offer Patton the opportunity to prioritise his experimental forms of voice music and scat singing over traditional vocal cadence or standard lyricism.

Review: While initially forming in 1984, it would be six years until Richmond, Virgina glam metal heroes FireHouse would release their double platinum selling self-titled debut LP in 1990. Achieving gold status in several other territories, including Japan where the band continue to enjoy a devout following, the album boasts several of the group's signature cuts such as the iconic power ballad 'Love Of A Lifetime'. Back on wax with a suave smoky red vinyl, FireHouse were the epitome of glam done right (there is too such a thing) and mark our words, musically this debut has aged far better than the haircuts or leather outfits of the time.

Review: Returning seven years on from their critically acclaimed sophomore opus Take Me Home, Dutch prog-rock auteurs For All We Know deliver their most grandiose sonic spectacle to date with the third full-length By Design Or By Disaster. The brainchild of Ruud Jolie; guitarist of symphonic metal legends Within Temptation, the LP sees the returning line-up of Leo Margarit (Pain Of Salvation), Kristoffer Gildenlow (ex-Pain Of Salvation) and Marco Kuypers (ex-Cloud Machine), whilst tapping the modern Dutch soulful r&b crooner Wudstik to handle lyrical/vocal duties. Soaring, swelling, cascading crescendos and dexterous noodling riffage weave and meander around saccharine melodies, leading to a vintage style of prog rock fearlessness delivered with modernised vision and a deft touch.

Review: Warner Records has put together this special reissue of The Rising Tied as a limited-edition apple-red double album which includes four bonus cuts that are making their vinyl debut. It first landed in 2005 from Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and marked his first foray into solo hip-hop production. The album went platinum and is packed with big-name collaborations with plenty of the scene's biggest names sun as Como as well as pop heroes like John Legend. Those bonus tracks are 'Be Somebody,' 'There They Go,' and 'The Hard Way' which were on CD back in 2005 and 'Welcome' which was a standalone single in 2015.

Review: Four Year Strong has released their sixth album and first in four years, Analysis Paralysis, on Pure Noise Records. Produced by Will Putney, the album emerged from a creative struggle, with Dan O'Connor and Alan Day seeking inspiration in Putney's home studio. The result is a bold expansion of their signature pop-punk and hardcore sound, now incorporating industrial synths and raw reggae elements. This adventurous blend showcases the band's growth while remaining unmistakably true to their roots. The lead single, 'Uncooked,' exemplifies this evolution with its blend of hardcore intensity and 90s guitar work, delivering a chorus that's perfect for both mosh pits and headbanging sessions. Following 2020's Brain Pain, which took a more considered approach, Analysis Paralysis marks a fresh chapter for Four Year Strong, proving their ability to innovate while maintaining their core appeal. Fans can expect an exciting fusion of styles that pushes the boundaries of their classic sound.

Review: Phoenix, Arizona based modern death metal brutalists Gatecreeper return with their highly anticipated third full-length Dark Superstition. The first album from the band since 2019's Deserted showcases an embracing of both the hyper-violent grindcore-indebted cuts from their 2021 mini-LP/EP An Unexpected Reality, as well as the brooding doom-metal opus 'Emptiness' that bookended the project. Recorded at God City Studios with Converge guitarist and iconic producer Kurt Ballou, while citing influences from melodic death and gothic metal acts such as In Flames, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema, the long gestation period has resulted in the band's most sonically sprawling work to date. Newly signed to Nuclear Blast, the decrepit stage appears to be set for Gatecreeper to finally seize all of their bubbling potential by the horns and throat. Mark our words when we say Dark Superstition will be one of the definitive extreme metal contributions of 2024.
