Review: The latest missive in the L.I.E.S. ongoing series of collaborative EPs brings together Cititrax regular An-I (AKA sometime leftfield disco maverick Doug Lee) and Berlin-based experimental electronics maverick Unhuman. The pair begins in forthright fashion, moving from the racing drum machine heartbeats, rhythmic noise and mangled yelps of "Five To Nine", to the doomy bass, triple-time beats and clanking metallic hits of post-punk number "Hate Thy Neighbour". Over on side B they mutilate electro beyond almost all recognition on the alien insanity of "Entschuldigung" before lolloping towards a conclusion with the fuzzy industrial funk thrust of "Cannibals".

Review: One of several intriguing artists to be commissioned to rework music from Bjork's Vulnicura album, Hemlock boss Untold takes a novel approach on his Chroal mix of "Lionsong". Bolstered by additional vocal tones from the same choir that appeared on previous Bjork LP Biophilia, Untold seeks rhythmic inspiration from his own discography, specifically "Flexible". The track originally appeared as a single-sided 12" back in 2009, and it brims with the madcap energy of early Untold beats, all woodblock percussion and scuffed found sound snippets. It's an unlikely partnership of sounds, but the legacy of Bjork's distinctive voice atop edgy electronics makes the whole wild cocktail go down smooth.

Review: Even by the standards of limited pressings, the latest missive from the Downbeat Black Label is a rarity. Remarkably, only 75 copies of this double header from F On and Urtzi have been pressed. The former kicks things off with A-side "Missing", a cranky and crackling trip through field recordings of pinball machines, unsettling electronics, surprisingly jazzy synth sounds, hazy aural textures and the occasional hypnotic pulse of dub techno. On the flipside Urtzi offers up a brand new interpretation of the same track, retaining some of the slowly vibrating electronics and opaque chords, while also adding dub techno style delay trails and a more structured, locked-in dub techno beat.

Review: The first release from Minimal Rome in some time sees label boss Valerio Lombardozzi curate a mini album of dramatically charged power electronics themed around "the silence and the noises of the plague". Lombardozzi naturally features under his Heinrich Dressel alias, and is complemented by solo contributions from Giallo Disco founders Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolour along with Alessandro Parisi and Umberto. Fans of cinematic synth heavy soundscapes are probably licking their lips right now, and the five tracks do not disappoint. Dressel's opening "La Peste" is almost yearning in its widescreen deployment of synths, whilst "Spitalfields 1665" from Maiovvi is a more forceful arrangement. Not Not Fun regular Umberto is a more stripped back, restrained mood with "The American Dream Plague" whilst Parisi's "Calamitas Calamitatum" is full on Giallo dancefloor horror and perhaps our favourite here!

Review: The DISKANT crew is back in full motion with this new batch of releases, and we're uber glad to see them back on our charts with their improbable technoid infusions. This time, however, the Durian Brothers take a side step and leave the podium to Marsesura, Uwalmassa and Wahono, three enigmatic figures who all make tripped-out percussive badness for all sorts of electornic aficionados. There's an Eastern tint about each of these 4 tracks, each of them spiraling into a reverie with the help of intricate drum folds, cavernous atmospherics, and the hypnotic glow that belongs to pretty much every Diskant bullet. Excellent.

Review: There's more spiritually enhanced 4/4 business emanating from the Acido Records camp with this new various artists release, drawing on some regular contributors to delve into unexplored depths for the benefit of all curious minds out there. SVN and Porn Sword Tobacco link up on the A-side with two distinct jams, the first being the undulating deep house dreamer "Fresh II", the latter being the aqueous dub of "Scrub A Tub". On the flip Dynamo Dreesen drifts into spaced out territory with the celestial "High Life Witness", before PG Sounds lays down some crusty funk on "Loose" and an anonymous contributor whips up an oddball acid experiment entitled "Monday Painter".

Review: U makes his 7" debut for Where To Now, and offers a great example of why the MPC machine should never be limited to MPC-sounding beats. It's a versatile instrument in the right hands, and there's no question in our minds that the producer in question here has the right hands. Offering three snapshots of a mind evidently packed with far-reaching, varied ideas, the musicality is surprising considering the process and the concepts at play utterly breathtaking.
From '2 Good 4 Me''s manipulated-yet-deep drum patterns, reversing in and out in a playful way while being cast in the dim light of a rainy, moody overhead arrangement, to the stepping, shuffle-inducing 'Almost Man', and its jazz-infused, candlelit vocal sections, this is quite possibly the most sophisticated electronic music you'll hear in some time.

Review: Sheffield-born producer unperson has earned some deserving attention off the back of his first two EPs. His third comes on Negative Space [MA] after already teasing the lead single. The young artist says the EP "reflects my own grapple with the process of creating. I find I get into a place where I experience intense highs and lows. I try to not overthink things and find balance." The tunes range from quiet and contemplative on 'Caught in the Coils' to bass heavy and avant guard on 'Lets Make Plans' via trance tinged and celestial on 'In Your Own Time.'

Review: Upsammy's ever mutating, morphing sound seems to melt before your very ears on this new body of work. A distinct beaty twang, and even drum & bass, comes into the mix as the Dutch maverick takes us on a unique trip. Highlights of her navigations include the deconstructed d&b of 'Relict' and the hypnotising chimes and shimmers of the title track which feels like a trip to a temple in Tibet while cruising the back pocket of an automaton. Powerfully mesmerising; minimal in dynamic, maximum in feels. Don't sleep on this one.

Review: Tabernacle turn their attention towards the industrial side of their musical repertoire with this hard-hitting release from Russian and French outfit UVB76. Hot on the heels of their S A N album on Teenage Menopause, this formidable duo serve up a searing blend of classic EBM pressure and contemporary flair, veering from the Skinny Puppy-esque stomp of "Extend" to the bruising Vex'd-tinted dubstep flex of "Ckahep". "Rust" locks into a jagged, darkside techno rut, while "Helm" gets artful with space and noise sculpture. "Citizen" offers the most measured track on the release, an uneasily submerged kind of electro noir for tortured souls.

Review: Indonesian imprint DIVISI62 returns with yet more sounds from their sonic exploration project Uwalmassa consisting of five killer segments of percussion, each one of them full of rhythm and mystique, and perfectly attuned to today's fascination with hypnotic drums. The thought process behind 'Bumi Uthiri' is to provide an alternative study on Javanese gamelan composition and to experiment with its known and unknown structures. It is a deconstructed interpretation of a musical tradition that aims to stretch boundaries, but nevertheless, adhere to its core essence. There is now other way to describe this music other than 'sick', especially for the fact that it is playable across any dancefloor, to any crowd wishing to be levitated; the secret is knowing when to offer it. Highly recommended.
