Differ-Ent (Hrall)
Differ-Ent (Ity)
Review: Speaking to Resident Advisor recently to accompany his podcast, veteran Detroit artist DJ Bone looked to clarify the distinction behind his new DIFF-ERENT project, stating it is "darker, more aggressive and straight to the point but still manages to remain beautiful in a very twisted way." This statement is fully qualified on the two track for Don't Be Afraid that make up this excellent debut 12" from the DIFF-ERENT project. "Differ-Ent (Hrall)" is the more musical of the two, with Bone teasing minor keys and acid squiggles over a stripped back, yet still quite forceful rhythm. "Differ-Ent (Ity)" is where that dark aggression is let loose and is the sort of ominous techno you crave to hear deep into the night.

Electro Magnetic Dowsing: The Lost D Side
Review: In 2005, DeepChord inaugurated Mike Huckaby's legendary S Y N T H label with two 12"s called Electromagnetic Dowsing and Electromagnetic Dowsing (The Final Step). The label has always been a deep house meets dub techno enigma with much of its limited catalogue becoming something of unspoken folklore, and Rod Modell now adds to the legend by releasing Electro Magnetic Dowsing: The Lost D Side, what could well be the final instalment of his Electromagnetic Dowsing series, on his own label Echospace. This fourth production sees DeepChord in full flight with blankets of textures hugging a rock solid four-four beat petted by subtle keys and echoing percussion. More quality from DeepChord once again.

Track 1
Track 2
Review: Since launching the Truncate alias and label in 2011, David 'Audio Injection' Flores has delivered some seriously raw analogue techno. He's at it again here, delivering a rare techno-minded 7" single for those who like their tracks punchy and to the point. The untitled A-side offers a near perfect fusion of vintage Chicago jack and the relentless, bass-heavy throb of techno - all wonky electronic riffs, "house your body" vocal snatches and booming beats. Flip to the B for an energy-packed, acid-flecked version that takes the original and gives it one colossal kick up the backside. It's the sort of thing you'd expect to hear from Jamal Moss, which is high praise indeed.

Conjure Dreams
Conjure Floyd
Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Review: John Shima is a prolific electronic music producer. He has a sound maybe best described as futuristic & intelligent, with a hint of quarkiness at times. He brings true depth and emotion into his productions, usually illustrated by using spacey pads, electrofunk basslines and intelligent drum programming. This EP contains two tracks, carefully selected from his archive to compliment one another and to bring you his productions of highest quality.

Alien Be In
Alien Be In (Fred Giannelli mono mix)
Alien Be In (Silent Servant remix)
Alien Be In (Silent Servant & John Tejada remix)
Review: San Francisco label Dark Entries keep up the tireless pace of releases, focusing here on the acid house phase of Psychic TV, the long running and hugely prolific music project of Genesis P-Orridge and a cast of contributing musicians. Characterised by some spectral didgeridoo playing, "Alien Be-In" first appeared in original format on Psychic TV's 1990 LP Towards Thee Infinite Beat and it's license for reissue by Dark Entries is complemented by some fine remixes. The band's own Fred Giannelli turns in a mono mix "sourced from the Emax floppy discs" but the real coup comes from the pair of B-side remixes involving the ever-excellent Silent Servant. One, in collaboration with John Tejada, is gripping techno whilst the other solo effort is redolent of Juan Mendez's recent Cititrax outings. Another must have from the DE crew!

Bad Timing
Without Time
Without Time (Nail remix)
Review: Christian Viers is fast becoming a prominent name on UK underground house and techno circuits, either as part of Lazlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall or his long running A1 Bassline project. Techno-focused releases on his own label, Source Unknown captured the attention of the ears behind the newly formed FINA White resulting in the Bad Timing EP, which the label state is a "strikingly clear indication of the distinctive direction" they plan to take moving forward. Title track "Bad Timing" is a straight up techno banger whose menacingly melodic low-end tones, relentless thump and rolling toms are the driving force behind its robust and looming groove. "Without Time" is a similarly complex percussive cut, but with its jungle inspired Arabic horns, trancey synth-lead breakdowns and acid squelches, whilst UK house veteran Nail offers a more direct 4/4 take on the track with his typically classy remix.

Vril - "Thronwagen"
Review: In advance of a new album for Delsin due later this month, the ascent of Giegling artist Vril continues apace with an appearance on Index Marcel Fengler, the label overseen by Berghain resident Marcel Fengler. Founded in 2011, the label was put on hold for various reasons but returned last year with 12?s from Echoplex and Thomas Hessler which confirmed IMF's new focus on operating as a platform for other artists. Along with Vril deep and dubby banger "Throwagen", both Echoplex and Hessler also feature on the Unit EP whilst label boss Fengler turns in his first original production in some time too.

Epilogue
Review: Having first appeared on the monumental Techno 2: The Next Generation compilation in 1990, Octave One swiftly set out their sound to become the Detroit techno icons they currently are with the Octivation EP for 430 West. The rest they say is history. Given the reissue clamour of anything related to the birth of Detroit techno, it's quite strange that the record hasn't been licensed for an official new edition in the ensuing two decades or so, until now that is! Presented here in it's promo edition, you get a chance to here "Sonic Fusion", a track that never officially came out and was replaced by "There and Beyond". Any self respecting Detroit techno fan will know "Nicolette" and "Paradise" and anyone interested in increasing their knowledge of the genre should consider a must have!

System Blackout
Review: In terms of current US artists, no one seems to have made as much of an impact in recent times as the the superbly named Charles McCloud Duff has done under his Matrixxman name. Unknown To The Unknown, Spectral Sound, Soo Wavey Records are some of the labels that have put the call out for material from Matrixxman, whose club ready style of house and techno has always been complemented by a clear sense of humour. Originally scheduled for release last month, Matrixxman's superb debut for Dekmantel makes for a perfect start to 2015 for the increasingly influential Dutch label and is hopefully the start of a prosperous working relationship. Opener "Sermons" is loose and jacking, with a decidedly haywire acid line at it's core, whilst "Cybernetic Implant" reins in the rhythmic madness in order to let those deep bleeps catch you off guard. If you like rolling vocals a la Hodge's "Amor Fati" do check closer "System Blackout" which is our pick!

Anipintiros #7 (Blawan remix)
Anipintiros #5 (Ben Sims remix)
Anipintiros #1 (Cadans remix)
Review: Last year's Anipintiros album was a fine statement from Darko Esser's Tripeo project, expanding on the purist techno approach displayed across a succession of club ready 12"s. The Dutch artist has pulled together a rather enticing array of his contemporaries to remix tracks from the album for two Anipintiros Reworks 12"s that have both been released this week. This second installment pulls material from Esser's Tripeo LP into bracing new directions with Blawan, Ben Sims, and Cadans at the controls. Of the three it's the remix of "Anipintiros #5" from Sims that truly hits the spot, somehow managing to keep a lid on the sonic chaos that unfolds. Wait to hear this one in the club.

G-23 - "Rhythm Sticks" (Secret Rave mix)
Review: This release comes from a misterious guy with two untitled tracks on the a-side that have the intention to open the project and marking guidelines and sounds that you will hear on the whole series. On the b-side you find the remix of the track "Untitled 02" by the swedish artist Rivet and the "Secret Rave Mix" of "Rhythm Sticks" by G-23, originally released on London based label No Logo, done by the same author of the two originals.

Heavily influenced by her father, a world traveller and architect, and her mother, a university lecturer and author, she developed a love for international travel and visited many faraway places - documenting the many diverse cultures she encountered. However, her attention was always drawn back to the free party community and, since 1997, she has participated in and documented the underground scene. Also she has already released a book called "Out Of Order" that is the culmination of ten years of work and a photographic celebration of the free party scene. Only 300 pressed....

To The Sun
Moon Direction
Star Phases
Saturn Sequences
Review: Mental Disorder owner Reeko arrives on the Modularz label with a truly distinguished discography to his name, featuring several albums and notable contributions to Pole Recordings. Constellation Andromeda seems like a fine addition to this body of work, brandishing a quartet of productions that really show Jose Rico's range when it comes to sculpting techno from deep and hypnotic textures. You could easily mistake the gnawing opener "To The Sun" for a production from the Geophone camp, whilst "Moon Direction" nails that tunnelling techno sensation perfectly, contrasting nicely with the incandescent synthetics that glower throughout "Star Phases". To close, "Saturn Sequences" finds Rico tuning in a deeper, more introspective track that might just be our favourite here.

Oben (7:20)
Unten (9:43)
Review: Modeselektor's label provides a neat soundtrack for two sides of clubbing on its latest release. "Oben" (German for upper floor) is built for the kind of peak-time action its title suggests and sees Fjaak let loose with a slamming, relentless rhythm, heavy drums and a cut-up of the "Amen" break, while a detached vocal witters away in the background. By contrast, "Unten", which is German for 'bottom' - or, in this context, 'the basement' - is more considered. Cavernous, spacious kicks and heavy claps provide the basis for a chord sequence that flits and floats through the arrangement as randomly as conversations at an after party.

Review: A timely reappraisal of Kenny Larkin's body of work commences courtesy of Rush Hour who are planning to repress the series of 12" reissues that they first undertook some six years ago. The first 12" gathers together some of Larkin's finest productions under the Pod guise, which was originally released on the Belgian Buzz label in 1992. Classic, deep and emotional are key words to describe this pure Detroit techno release. Again...probably his best work ever! Drone Logic (Rodhad remix)
Platform Zero (Volte-Face remix)
Sping 27 (Silent Servant emix)
Review: It seemed a logical step for Phantasy Sound to extend the lifespan of Daniel Avery's well regarded debut album Drone Logic with a programme of remix themed 12"s from some of the UK producer's favourite contemporaries. Ahead of a double CD release entitled New Energy that collates these efforts, Phantasy Sound slip out this heavyweight 12" featuring reworks of Avery from Silent Servant, Rodhad, and Volte Face. The rising star of the Berlin techno scene, Rodhad is granted the A Side for a typically lean and deadly rework of "Drone Logic", whilst Silent Servant completely flips the ambience of "Spring 27" into a equally powerful journey through industrial techno. Volte Face may be the lesser known quantity here, but his chiming take on "Platform Zero" is reminiscent of Holden at his most ecstatic.

Instead some eight highlights have been chosen to complement those that featured on The Deviant Octopus, a double pack that opened proceedings on the Siberian artist's new label endeavour ????. There is a healthy amount of fine electronic music to enjoy on these two vinyl platters, opening with "Mystery" from Miss Kraviz herself and taking in contributions from Plaid, Armando, DJ Bone, and Polygon Window. The dons at K7! have even thrown in a copy of the mix on CD too. Kraviz completists will be all over this.

Alessandro Parisi - "Calamitas Calamitatum" (4:57)
Vercetti Technicolor - "Athens 430BC" (5:14)
Review: The first release from Minimal Rome in some time sees label boss Valerio Lombardozzi curate a mini album of dramatically charged power electronics themed around "the silence and the noises of the plague". Lombardozzi naturally features under his Heinrich Dressel alias, and is complemented by solo contributions from Giallo Disco founders Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolour along with Alessandro Parisi and Umberto. Fans of cinematic synth heavy soundscapes are probably licking their lips right now, and the five tracks do not disappoint. Dressel's opening "La Peste" is almost yearning in its widescreen deployment of synths, whilst "Spitalfields 1665" from Maiovvi is a more forceful arrangement. Not Not Fun regular Umberto is a more stripped back, restrained mood with "The American Dream Plague" whilst Parisi's "Calamitas Calamitatum" is full on Giallo dancefloor horror and perhaps our favourite here!

Review: Back when Phil Moffa debuted on The Corner alongside Anthony Parasole in 2012, he was regarded as somewhat of an unsung mastering hero of NYC techno; a stateside equivalent to Neel or Rashad Becker responsible for countless mixdowns and post-production jobs. In the subsequent years, Moffa's status as a producer outright has grown thanks to some solo outings on local labels Plan B and Most Excellent Unltd. A return to The Corner is most welcome and Attempt No Landing finds the New Yorker in fairly bracing mood from the off with "Magnetic" dominated by an alien pulse and the deathly thud of the submerged bass drum. "Molecular" is just as unrelenting, though there is a more playful funk at its core whilst "Ignition" heads off into dubbier territory, with skittering hi hats aplenty! All hail the Moffa!

Those fiending for some material to mess up the dance will gravitate immediately to the title track, which is a fuzzed out little number in a similar vein to Terekke's best work. Complementing this, Low Jack is given the space to fully indulge his more esoteric urges on five tracks that veer through the realm of sonic abstraction, landing on moments that could soundtrack horror films as well as short excercises in noise reminiscent of Haswell.
