Review: Every once in a while, a release is slung our way that charms us so deeply that we're not sure what angle approach it from. Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Coming to purple 7" vinyl, the track makes "Russian violet cyber grapes rain in Chicago", as asserted by the artist.

Review: The diffuse hues and retro-feeling colours of the artwork on this new 45rpm from Star Creature perfectly embody the downtempo and Balearic sounds within. They come from A Vision Of Panorama who seems to ever more have the dance floor in sights over his last few releases. That's not to say these are banging tunes - but they do have lovely grooves. 'Piano Sunset' is a real spine tingler with 80s keys and mid tempo drums that come alive with crisp hits and a fresh bassline. 'Lost In Palms' then has a shuffling and low slung groove with nice wet hits. Add in some more lush chords and you have a real pearler.

Review: Deliciously care-free, sunny-sided and mildly cosmic: Brooklyn's Aimes delivers yet another pert pop package. "Pleasure Cruise" is a hooky, synth pop jam that will have you singing along before the end of the first play. Imagine Hot Chip on the fluffiest of jags or Sebastien Tellier on the poppiest of flexes and you're kinda close. The vocoder-heavy lolloper "Acid Dreaming", meanwhile, sits somewhere between Air and Jim Noir with its unabashed retro-future charm. The pleasure is ours.

Review: Giovanni Damico has done plenty of great house EPs in his time but on this one he explores a retro Italo and disco sounds with lashings of synth and wave influences. His EP for Star Crature opens with 'Ashes' which could well be a long forgotten classic getting a timely reissue. The machines bring a nice analogue texture, the melodies are filled with 80s nostalgia and the whole thing is coated in dust. Flip it over and you will find the more leggy cosmic explosions and chugging basslines of 'Milky Way' which is finished with a perfect vocal and plenty of nice vocoder sounds.

Review: The dazzling Star Creature label has an impossibly feel good future retro disco-funk gem on its hands here courtesy of E Da Boss. E has been turning out killer jams for many years and this time joins forces with Ishtar for 'Fool 4U'. It has funky-ass bass slaps down low, with plenty of jazzy and cosmic keys up top and boogie grooves that make you move. The vocal is acrobatic and brings sultry soul on the E live remix. On the flip the original is a little more upright with 80s chord vamps, noodling guitar licks and the vocal still bring the soul. Two gorgeous cuts for cosy dancefloor vibes.

Review: Star Creature continues to thrill and inspire with each successive seven-inch single. The label's latest comes from debutants Family of Geniuses, a seven-piece boogie band from Chicago who back heritage influences with brilliant new songs. You'll find a perfect example on the A-side, where "Let's Not Start a Fight" - a sweet, perfectly-pitched boogie club cut that sounds to us like Escort making original electrofunk - sparkles from start to finish. Over on the flipside they doff a cap to the label's roots, offering up a brilliant cover of E Live's "Do Me Like That", the 2015 bomb that helped put Star Creature on the map.

Review: German combo First Touch can rightfully be considered amongst the top tier of 21st century boogie and electrofunk revivalists. Having previously shined on Omega Supreme, Born to Shine and Neon Finger, the Mannheim crew has now transferred to the brilliant Star Creature imprint. A-side "Toe Jammin" is particularly fresh, featuring as it does a killer combination of thickset synth bass, bustling drum machine rhythms, glassy-eyed '80s soul chords, rising horns and one hell of an extended piano solo. Thrown in all manner of synth doodles and you have an effortlessly brilliant cut. They try their hand at more traditional electrofunk fare on the flip, layering soulful vocal samples and fizzing synth solos over a classic P-funk groove. These won't hang around for long, so buy now to guarantee a copy.

Review: Straight up disco soul from Minneapolis troupe Freakway who - according to legend - are based deep in Tokyo underground disco scene. "Hot Touch" comprises tight musicianship (especially between the bass and drums) with great precision vocals that really shine with articulation and wry humour in a way that's not dissimilar to Cameo. "Ain't Gonna Last" slows the vibe right down with a more soulful boogie touch where full emphasis should be paid to the bass that's fluid and funky enough to make Larry Graham blush. Tight.

Review: David Zylberman is the Ghost, a key member of Egyptian Lover's spaced out synthfunk backing band who now steps out for a hugely awaited new 7" after the label leaked advance copies in November. Review: If tactile, colourful and synthesizer-powered boogie revivalism is your thing, you probably already own a clutch of singles on the admirable Star Creature label. It's bad news for your wallet, but you need the label's latest "45" in your life too. 'What About Us' is a label debut from former hip-hop crew member Gillies, who serves up a sparkling, emotive chunk of squelchy synth-soul rich in squeezable bass, memorable melodies, Star Creature's trademark early '80s synth squiggles (LFO trigger action aplenty) and sweet female vocals. Label regular E-Live provides the flipside revision, combining D-Train style bold synth riffs with a chugging, pitched-down Italo-disco style bassline and unfussy drums.

'Make That Change' channels the heyday of classic early '80s NYC disco, accompanied by Saucy Lady's wonderful vocal work - guaranteed to be a floor filler. Over on the flip, JKriv serves up a slick disco dub remix which largely forgoes the vocals, but retains that amazing trumpet solo to keep the party going well into the late night.

Review: Some scintillating all-star action here, as nu-boogie star and Star Creature regular Andre Esput joins forces with fellow revivalist synth-funk stalwarts Kappekoff and Reggie Got Beats AKA RGB.
