Review: Candido Camero is credited by the label Real Gone as the man "who basically brought the conga into the modern age", with his "innovative multi-percussion setups and tunable congas" raising the bar for those seeking an example of international music done right. Widely known for his elaborate one-man band apparatus - a combination of his own patented tunable conga with bongos, guiro, and foot-operated cowbell - Candido is unsurprisingly candid about his pioneering invention of the multi-percussion setup. 'Dancin' And Prancin'' hails from Camero's disco spate - a long time after which he'd already established a foothold in the contemporary jazz and soul worlds as a player in the bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Taylor, to name a few. Well into his career, at the age of 58, 'Dancin' And Prancin'' nonetheless refuses to forgo the raw, easygoing follies of youth, with authentic and raw rhythms brought to a no less sprightly, spritzy vocal number.

Achieving gold status in several other territories, including Japan where the band continue to enjoy a devout following, the album boasts several of the group's signature cuts such as the iconic power ballad 'Love Of A Lifetime'. Review: If you're not familiar with the 1973 American-Philippine action movie Savage! then join the club. Distributed through Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the Cirio H. Santiago production was one of around 40 that the Hollywood legend worked on at far lower costs in the Asian island nation compared with back in the US. A somewhat exploitative business model taking advantage of lower wages in a developing country, the story also used more than a few totems of the Blaxploitation canon to tell the tale of a criminal who winds up getting caught up in a revolution to overthrow a military government. Heavy stuff dealt with in a pulp fiction style, the score reflects this - funk filled guitar licks, slap bass and woodwind hooks. Hip hop selectors take note, then, there's plenty to play with here.

Review: Azar Lawrence's 1976 solo album People Moving is one that puts his skill on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones front and centre throughout. The classic album was assembled by a stellar lineup including none other than Patrice Rushen on electric piano and vocals, as well as Harvey Mason on drums and Mtume on percussion. It was dedicated at the time to Charles Stepney and blends funk, soul, and jazz into a vibrant musical experience. The title track, 'People Moving,' stands proud with Lawrence's soulful saxophone and Jerry Peters' impressive horn arrangements really drawing you in. The record also marks Skip Scarborough's debut as a producer, and it's a role he later expanded when working with artists like Bobbi Humphrey, Con Funk Shun, and Phyllis Hyman.

Review: Dusty Springfield's Faithful is a long-lost gem that showcases the singer at the height of her powers. Originally intended as her third Atlantic album in 1971, the tracks were shelved until even after the singer passed on. Real Gone's reissue beautifully captures the essence of these soulful songs, produced by Jeff Barry. While not containing a standout hit, tracks like 'Haunted' and 'Natchez Trace' deliver a funky, raw energy reminiscent of Dusty's best work. The album follows the Memphis blueprint but with a New York twist, lacking the swampy groove but compensating with Dusty's commanding vocals. The musicians' credits may be missing, but Dusty's voice shines over the gospel pop of 'I Found My Way Through the Darkness' and the Bread cover 'Make it With You.' Faithful is another great album in her discography that is always a welcomed listen.

Review: A box office flop at the time of its release in 1995 - only recouping around $6million of its $25million budget - Tank Girl has since become a cult classic of the post-apocalyptic science fiction canon. Popularised thanks to its strong feminist messages and vivid construction of a universe, the foundations of which were found in a comic book series of the same namer, the soundtrack is both of its time and every bit as high impact as the flick. From Bjork's moody and abrasive 'Army of Me', to the disrupted lo-fi rock & roll of Hole's 'Drown Soda', Ice T's typically snarling and sinister 'Big Gun', and the trip hop landmark 'Roads' by Portishead, the credits read like a who's who of 1990s cool. And this emphasises just how on point Tank Girl was, even if we didn't all seem ready to acknowledge it back then.
