Dirty South Dirt
Cat: PND 12. Rel: 21 Apr 15

Deep House
Dirty South Dirt (5:35)
Dirty South Dirt (String version) (5:18)
Late Night Theme (7:27)
Work Them Dub (4:47)
Review: YES! We hadn't heard anything from Detroit's Kai Alce in a while so it's an absolute joy to see him back on our shelves and doing what he does best. This, of course, is a reissue of the "Dirty South Dirt" anthem that came out as a 7" on Omar S' FXHE label a while back but it hasn't been around for a while and some of us still hadn't picked up this absolute gem! Slow-building percussion and funky yet minimal melodies make up the track, and you also get a string-heavy version, too! On the flip, you have "Late Night Theme" and the bumpy "Work The Dub" to swing you from side to side. Highly recommended and downright essential.

The Rare Source EP
Cat: PND 14. Rel: 30 Jan 18

Deep House
Earthwhispers (5:46)
Aint No (4:52)
Brazil (5:43)
De La Sol (5:45)
Review: You can always rely on France's P&D to supply us with the fine deep house runnings from the 90s, and this latest reissue from Alton Miller's Aphrodisiac project is full proof that they are the unchallenged kings in that domain. The Rare Source EP was first released back in 1996, at a time when the dubby end of the house spectrum was at its peak, and when the term 'deep' really stood for something on the dancefloor. As such, these 4 killer cuts are built for total domination, starting with the excellent "Earthwhispers" and its tribalesque swing, followed by the dustier, more bass-heavy bumps of "Ain't No". "Brazil", kicking off the flipside, has got that classic Chicago feel, a hypnotic flow of melodies wrapping over booming kicks and deep low frequencies, while "De La Sol" unleashes a gorgeous slew of stuttering melodies and itchy vocal samples that render this EP a milestone of the late 90s house scene. Unmissable.

Techno
Ritchie Inkle - "Happy Face" (7:55)
Stasis - "So-Lar" (6:57)
Review: A record store clerk, distributor, artist and DJ in the mid '90s, Didier Allyne cross-cuttingly approached the scene, even when 'French Touch' was massive. He embraced new trends from a sideways perspective, merging his own blend of broken beat, soul, jazz and Warp style electro and began the Parisian Shop Traffic Records in 1998. This compilation will be in several volumes, including flagship pieces from this shop: influenced by Fat Cat Records, Wally's Groove World and others. This first techno volume highlights the influence that Fat Cat had on Didier. Ritchie Inkle is one of the designers of Nu Loop. His piece: the tough yet soulful "Happy Face" represents the sound of Traffic Records. On the flip, the introspective piece by UK techno legends Stasis entitled "So-Lar" is from Time is Right in 1993.

Tribute EP

Deep House
I Won't Hurt You (I Swear)
Wild Child (feat Emanuel Pipen)
Let's Work That Mutha F...
On A Journey (Journey Mental mixx)
Review: For those with a passion for vintage Chicago house, this 12" should be essential listening. It does a great job at chronicling the largely uncelebrated work of QX-1, a rarely used early '90s pseudonym of Chi-town veteran Mike Dunn. All four tracks are essential, with the rolling, X-rated deep house sweatiness of "I Won't Hurt U (I Swear)" contrasting nicely with the Dancemania-inspired ghetto-house bump of "Let's Work That Mutha F..." The EP's most obscure moment is arguably Emmanuel Pipen hook-up "Wild Child", a thrillingly intense trip into Wild Pitch territory that originally appeared on a long-forgotten compilation. Arguably best of all, though, is "On a Journey (Journey Mental Mixx)", a brilliant fusion of bumpin' New York groovery and Mr Fingers style Chicagoan deepness.

Night Station
2 AM Detroit
Review: The original godfather of deep house returns with this single containing two classic Wade cuts, re-released on clear vinyl, including "Night Station" from 2004, and "2AM Detroit" from 1998. Both are deceptively powerful cuts which are characterised by their sheer simplicity, and display why the man's name is held in such reverence; "Night Station" takes a four note bassline, organ stabs and tense string pad and simply lets its emotive mood play out, whilst "2am Detroit" on the flip side meanwhile takes more of a laidback loft party vibe, with jazzy keys which float over its swinging rhythm.

Johnny Fiasco - "Zapped"
MD3 - "The Pressure Cooker" (Pressure Moan mix)
Chez Damier & Ron Trent - "Foot Therapy"
P&D - "Closer"
Review: French deep house scene stalwarts Phil Weeks and Didier Allyne have been running their low-key P&D Recordings imprint for five years, delivering occasional blasts of brilliance without a hint of hype, mixing new tracks with reissues of slept-on classics. This fifth anniversary collection fills in the gaps for newcomers and occasional label-watchers, offering up premier quality material from the likes of Rick Wade (whose "Night Station" is among his best work), Joshua, Jesper Dahlback and Boo Williams (the fantastically murky "Anger (Chi-Town Dub)"). Brilliantly, there's also a chance to savour a couple of vintage gems from Mood II Swing (the ultra-deep "Move Me") and Chez Damier and Ron Trent (1995's "Foot Therapy").
