Review: Trend-setting British based soul outfit, The Brand New Heavies have reunited with their original lead singer N'Dea Davenport to release a new studio album called "Get Used To It". The album skilfully blends the classic live funk and soul sound that was the signature of the group when they came out with their stunning debut album 15 years ago. The Brand New Heavies were born out of the rare groove scene and formed in the late eighties by drummer/keyboard player Jan Kincaid, bassist Andrew Love Levy and guitarist Simon Bartholomew. Their groundbreaking alternative sound has garnered commercial and critical acclaim worldwide. N'Dea Davenport originated out of Atlanta, then onto LA where she emerged from the downtown art and musical community. N'Dea's notoriety came swiftly by collaborating with varied artists in Hip Hop, Pop, Rock and Soul before joining TBNH - forever shaping her diversity of life, style and musical taste. In support of the upcoming album, The Brand New Heavies are gearing up for a promo tour in July and August.

Review: Five years after making his name as a member in Marley Marl's legendary Juice Crew, the battle-scarred Brooklyn underground star returned for his second album with a newly tweaked name and his own supporting crew, Masta Ace Incorporated, a new sound and sharply honed style, and a cynical new outlook on the entire rap game. In fact, a disgusted new outlook might be a more appropriate characterization, as a controlled abhorrence oozes from every pore of "Slaughtahouse", lashing out not only at easy outside targets (Bigoted police, for instance) but also at those shady characters inside the "Slaughtahouse" whose violence is enacted physically (Ace himself places the part of a mugger on "Who U Jackin?") rather than lyrically, bringing the entire community down in the process. Review: The final Lee 'Scratch' Perry album is bittersweet but here for us to enjoy and pay our respect. The highly influential icon who passed away in 2021 was a groundbreaking artist to many. One of his last steps may have been to bridge the dub and hip-hop community better like only he could try. Step in Bob Riddim (Coincidentally a great name!) who performed many of the instruments here has the experience background to equal Perry's desire. Destiny is the result of this unique collaboration. Expect an album that catapults both of the artists to a higher level of expression. There is some irony that Destiny is the tribute to Lee 'Scratch' Perry.

Review: Tone-Loc, soared from obscurity into pop stardom in 1989 when his hoarse voice and unmistakable delivery made the song "Wild Thing" a massive hit. The song used a sample from Van Halen's "Jamie's Cryin", was co-written by a pre-fame Young MC, and turned Tone's debut record into a major success. The album "Loc-ed After Dark" was only the second rap album ever to reach #1 on Billboard's album charts (The Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill" was the first). "Loc-ed" featured quality beats and rhymes, including some of the earliest productions by the legendary Dust Brothers. Loc's distinctively rough, raspy voice and easygoing delivery made him an appealing storyteller, but he was aiming for the streets more than the pop charts.
So there's the occasional profanity, the stalker-tinger title track, and "Cheeba Cheeba," which made waves at the time as one of the earliest pro-marijuana raps on record (of course, this was years before Cypress Hill, and Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign was still fresh in the public's mind). The secondary singles "Funky Cold Medina (also a major hit), "I Got It Goin' On" and "On Fire" (the latter the first record ever released on Delicious Vinyl) are all tight tracks as well. Tone-Loc expanded his horizons into acting in 1992, landing roles on the TV series "Roc" and in films including Jim Carrey's breakthrough flick "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective".

All the same, that's what's great about his debut, since it's exceptionally clever and effective, a wonderful combination of deft rhymes and skillful production. And there's no discounting Matt Dike, Michael Ross, the Dust Brothers, and engineer Mario Caldato Jr. (the latter two names are members of the Beastie Boys' inner circle), who make this record easily accessible, without a trace of guilt, even if it does sample from familiar sources.
And, really, Young MC is a gifted rapper, spinning out rhymes with a deft touch and turning out rhymes much more clever than they should be. Yes, "Stone Cold Rhymin" is a product of its time, particularly in its sound and lyrical references, but divorced from the Bush era, it comes off as one of the catchiest, friendliest pop-rap records and it's still an infectious party record years after its release.
