Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

First released in 1992, Slowdive's 'Blue Day' compiles the best of the band's earliest outings in the shoegaze genre, bottling them under a singly brittle, blue banner. Just seven tracks adorn its two sides, with the notable self-titled track 'Slowdive' signalling some hint of the band's origins (its wayward drumming getting at an especially happy naivete). Later moments on the record, such as 'Morningrise', are comparatively icier verging on frostbitten, with an overdriven crunch clipping off the most amped edges of the transient hits, suggesting an imperfect medium. On the B, the best of the lot is the slow colic of 'Losing Today', a song palpably packed with a sense of loss, most notably achieved via its soaring, cuspate guitar ogees, albeit ones which just about peek their heads above the shrednoise.

Review: The Pumpkins' sophomore effort, originally released in 1993, remains a masterclass in balancing raw emotion with lush, layered production. Opening with the iconic 'Cherub Rock', the album immediately asserts its originality, blending Billy Corgan's searing guitar work with Butch Vig's pristine production. The track's dynamic shifts and explosive energy still sounds like nothing since. 'Today', with its deceptively upbeat melody and darker lyrical undertones, became a radio and MTV staple, while 'Disarm' showcased the band's range, swapping distortion for orchestral strings and highlighting Corgan's vulnerable songwriting. For longtime fans, 'Mayonnaise' often emerges as the album's hidden gemia track that marries melancholic melodies with cathartic, crashing crescendos. Throughout the album, Jimmy Chamberlin's drumming is nothing short of phenomenal, adding weight and complexity to tracks like 'Geek U.S.A.' and 'Soma'. Siamese Dream still resonates with the same potency, blending anthems of adolescent angst and shimmering beauty. A reissue that reaffirms the album's enduring legacy as a cornerstone of its genre.

Review: Grunge was already dominating the world by July 1993, when Chicago's Smashing Pumpkins released their second album, but Siamese Dream would point the way forward for the sound, and, racking up six million sales, it would also prove to be one of its most successful landmarks after Nirvana's Nevermind. It was that album's producer - Butch Vig - who took the helm on this album, and his trademark crunchy and compressed take on the loud/quiet light and shade of 'Today' and the gloriously sludgy 'Mayonnaise' had a lot to do with its success. That and, of course, Bill Corgan's distinctive and vulnerable vocal performances, which make this the missing evolutionary step between the Pixies and the next generation of emo kings like My Chemical Romance.

Review: Offering up a fly-on-the-wall earful of the legendary punk spoken word songstress at the peak of her prowess, First We Take Manhattan is a live LP captured at New York City's iconic CBGB's on August 11th 1979, whilst touring in promotion of the Todd Rundgren-produced Wave, which would mark the third and final album billed under the Patti Smith Group. Whilst receiving somewhat of a mixed reception upon release due its more radio-friendly oriented sound, longtime staples such as 'Frederick', 'Seven Ways Of Going' and 'Dancing Barefoot' all make appearances, exuding Smith's unbothered stance towards critical reception, while also making room for Easter deep cut 'Space Monkey', as well as a reliably hefty dose of material from her classic 1975 debut solo LP Horses, including 'Redondo Beach' and 'Kimberly'.

Review: There are many ways to deal with upheaval and crises but sometimes the best approach is to answer harsh realities with an antidote. Speaking on their new album, tree-loving masked electro-punks Snapped Ankles say: "We can still hold the line of beauty, form, and beat. No small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one... hard times require furious dancing. Each of us is proof." And to their credit the album lives up to the manifesto: 'Raoul' is exactly what you'd want to hear at 3am in Glastonbury festival; whilst 'Pay The Rent' sounds like a homage to big beat, spiced with krautrock. Snapped Ankles clearly have the tools and the talent to send people's minds to space. A noble entry deserving of glory.

Review: Everyone's got Goo, Daydream Nation and Washing Machine, it's time to branch out a bit with this Sonic Youth album. This is a mind-blowing live album recorded at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago on October 14, 1987 - four months after the release of the New York band's critically acclaimed Sister LP. This features an intro by the late, great record producer and champion of artistic freedom Steve Albini and the subsequent setlist is a snapshot of a band on the verge of their imperial phase, finding leaner songs after developing a reputation as rock n' roll disrupters. The album was first rolled out as a semi-bootleg on the Geffen-baiting label Goofin' and now the Superior Viaduct label is making it more widely available. It's long overdue and a vital part of the Sonic Youth puzzle.

Review: "No one is more surprised to be here than me!" mutters Steve Albini as he sets himself to introduce to the stage the mighty Sonic Youth. In October 1987, when this show was happening, Albini was banned from the Cabaret Metro venue in Chicago where it was being held, but Sonic Youth demanded his banishment be overturned. It sets the triumphant mood as a frenzy ensues. Guitars churn like chainsaws on Evol album cut 'Tom Violence'; 'White Kross' is prime Lee Ranaldo with tremolo picking of the highest order and 'Stereo Sanctity' is all about Thurston Moore. Riding the wave of momentum that their album Sister had imparted on the punk scene, this is Sonic Youth in their prime and up there with the greatest live rock albums of all time.

It's been a boom period for British post-punk, but with more than five years passing since the craze hit its peak, it's become easier to separate the wheat from the chaff and recognise those who are here to stay and those who had very little to sustain any interest. Squid are here to stay, having blossomed from their shouty beginning into one of the most compelling British bands of the past ten years, with genre-defying qualities and boundless creative spirit. This new album is about evil, nine stories whose protagonists reckon with cults, charisma and apathy. Real and imagined characters wading into the dark ocean between right and wrong. Recorded at Church Studios in Crouch End with Marta Salogni and Grace Banks and Dan Carey on additional production, it's a real gem with a real chance of being up for nomination at the next Mercury Prize ceremony.

Review: Stella Chronopoulou began writing her fifth album in 2019 during a ferry ride to Anafi. Seeking solace after personal turmoil, she composed a melody that evolved into a rootsy, atmospheric track. While much of her career was in English, this album marks her first songs in Greek, including 'Omorfo Mou' which was written on the boat, and a cover of Greek New Wave's 'Ta Vimata.' The album was recorded with collaborators like Rafael Cohen and is a 27-minute meditation on love, desire and time with gentle rhythms and warm instrumentation. It represents ?tella's sound by capturing both nostalgia and confident self-assurance.

Review: Their sixth album and most commercially successful at the time of release, this is widely considered a masterpiece of beautiful art pop. Argued to be heavily influenced by experimental film, the title of the album is said to have come from two films by the pioneer Norman McClaren. Sonically, they were pushing the boat out there and have audiophile's still obsessing over what they did in the studio for this and applying that to their art. Despite indulging in sonics that seem out-there, there is an aspect of the familiar that makes it engaging and it's why it managed to break the Billboard Charts in the U.S. when it came out. 'Refractions In The Plastic Pulse' is a case in point: It's avant easy-listening, influenced by bossa nova. And 'Rainbow Conversation' is similarly stunning, with a samba shuffle driving things along and conjuring images of sipping caipirinhas on a sandy shore. Who knew Stereolab could be this accessible?

Review: Widely regarded as one of Stereolab's best albums, the deadpan title of their second album conveys, to an extent, what to expect. The track 'Pack Yr Romantic Mind' lives and dies on Tim Gane's noise rock bursts, which provide stunning contrast to Laetitia Sadier dream pop vocals. Gane and Sadier, as a songwriting duo, come from very different styles and ideas but it's the confluence of these that is the beating heart of Stereolab and why they're still revered more than 30 years on from when they released it. Another scorcher here to look out for is 'Jenny Ondioline', where static noise and thick, foggy post-rock ambiance gives way to a motorik beat that's Neu! and Can-level transcendental, as it whisks you into another realm, before coming back to a very present, belligerently shreddy distorted guitar outro. This is a band that pandered to no one's expectations but their own and let raw emotion guide them.

Featuring creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, alongside Primus and Ween, the album includes the most memorable songs from the show, a special highlight among which is the guest appearance by Rush's Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, who perform 'Closer To The Heart' with Primus and Matt Stone.
