Herb Ward - "Honest To Goodness" (2:50)
Bob Brady & The Con Chords - "Everybody's Goin' To The Love-In" (2:48)
Review: Party brand-turned-record label Deptford Northern Soul Club is doing a great job in offering up reissue seven-inch singles packed with hard-to-find soul stompers from the late 1960s. Their latest "45" delivers two tried-and-tested classics from 1968. On the A-side you'll find Herb Ward's superb "Honest To Goodness", an effortlessly soulful and energetic affair in the typical Northern Soul style that benefits greatly from a life-affirming call-and-response style chorus. Over on the flip you'll find Bob Brady & The Con Chords "Everybody's Goin' To A Love-In", a scintillating blue-eyed soul affair reminiscent of some of Smokey Robinson's greatest moments. Two classics, one essential "45" - don't sleep!

Got To Get Through To You
Review: Hailing from the Bay Area, Gene Washington & The Ironsides surface with their debut 7" for Midwest powerhouse Colemine Records! As well as possessing the best name for a backing band in some time, George Washington & The Ironsides are a tight outfit to boot on the evidence of the two tracks offered here. "Don't Throw Your Love Away" is a catchy mid-tempo number with a sublime horn section and a blow away vocal turn from the man George and it's blessed by a B Side cover version of the TSU Tornadoes cut "Got To Get Through To You" that showcases The Ironsides talent for the uptempo funk jam session.

Super Star (2:54)
Super Star (part 2) (3:50)
Review: Miles Away Records are proud to introduce their latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem 'Super Star' by Ruth Waters and the State Of Mind Show Band. Ruth 'Silky' Waters was best known for her two disco-infused albums Never Gonna Be The Same and Out In The Open, produced by the late, great John Davis. 'Super Star', however, was released on the tiny independent KMBA Recordings label in the late 1970s, and draws on the twin wells of modern soul and gospel, lending both a touch of cosmic goodness. On the flip, there's 'Super Star Pt.2', which plunges deeper into the cosmic essence of the track by way of both extended guitar and synth solos; both tracks are stupendios in their own rights, making this a hotly versatile release for a far-and-wide DJ demographic.

Let Me Do My Thing (Voodoocuts edit)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/smudges, but otherwise in perfect working order***

According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.

Mystic Brew (part 1)
Mystic Brew (part 2)
Review: Taken from a trio of 45s from the Vong45 record label, here the West Loop collective remake some of their favourite soul, jazz and funk tracks. This release in the series has West Loop remaking the original foundation to the A Tribe Called Quest masterpiece 'Electric Relaxation' - 'Mystic Brew' as recorded by Blue Note keyboard player Ronnie Foster in 1972. Featuring all live instrumentation including some fierce Hammond organ vamps, a deep rich bassline and a vibrant electric piano solo, West Loop revitalise the jazziness of the original on 'Part 1' but move into a funkier direction with 'Part 2' on the flip. Perfect 45 territory for the funk and hip hop DJs.

Willie West/Cold Diamond & Mink - "I'm Still A Man" (4:12)
Cold Diamond & Mink - "I'm Still A Man" (instrumental) (3:07)
Review: Willie West is a vital underdog of the New Orleans soul scene. He is cherished for his work with The Meters and Allen Toussaint but remains a low key talent. Thankfully he is still around and recently reappeared with a superbly raw, honest, painfully emotive sound that draws on personal topics for its lyrics. Add in his minor chords and gently rhythms and you have a gorgeous sound, as exemplified on this new 7" for Finnish label Timmion. Filled with artistry and emotion, these tunes were laid down when he visited the county for a live show and are as good as soul gets.

Courtial - "Losing You" (with Errol Knowles) (3:05)
Sounds Of The City Experience - "Getting Down" (4:06)
Review: Weston's curatorial crusade continues as he unearths more criminally overlooked/under-pressed rarities from the golden ages; "Losing You" comes from Courtial and Errol Knowles outstanding 1976 soul jazz album. The most straight up soul joint from the album, it's an instant sweat-fest with real guts behind both the vocals and instrumentation. Flip for the jazz funk whirlwind that is "Getting Down". Taken from their eponymous, once-super rare ($1500 per copy rare) album (also released in 76), it's an instrumental hurricane led by strings, horns and bombastically swung drums. Powerful. Just Give Love A Try (4:08)
Review: Ben White - not the same Ben White that plays as a defender for Arsenal - was just 25 when he was brought by Eddy Bongo Brown of the Funk Brothers to the Motor City to play with Marvin Gaye. It was five years after that when he lay down this single - his only one, although it is said there are some lost tapes featuring a full album on them out there somewhere. We hope it is found as this is excellent - 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' is a super smooth soul with nice funky rhythms and a hint of disco energy. 'Just Give Love A Try' is a more slow and lavish groove with choral backing and fancy piano.

This Time (4:29)
Review: Emotional Rescue previously dived into the plush, soulful and verdant sound of Jaki Whitren and John Cartwright with the reissue of their essential International Times album back in 2013. Sadly Whitren and Cartwright passed away two years ago, and this 7" of previously CD/digital-only material materialises in tribute to these wonderfully talented souls. "That Will Be That" is an effervescent boogie jam with rich synths that interplay beautifully with Whitren's stunning vocal, while "This Time" takes a starkly opposite approach with just the most delicate of keys lingering behind Whitren's powerful, echoing vocal. It's a poignant note of remembrance for two gifted musicians who shone their light into the world.

Sunshine Of Your Love (3:41)
Review: Spanky Wilson is one of the fiercest, sweetest voices in the golden era of late 60s / early 70s soul, with a modest but mighty mark left behind by her run of classic albums and later collaboration with The Quantic Soul Orchestra. This handy 7" gathers together two classic Wilson cuts, leading in with the heavyweight soul-funk of "You". On the flip is her evergreen cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love", which for our money bests Jack Bruce's original vocal performance to take the vintage track onto a whole other level of raw, passionate power.

Peggy Lee - "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay" (1970 original)
Review: Warehouse Find! Released in 68, resurfaced in 05 and back with a very polite, well-polished edit, Spanky Wilson's cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love" is one of the best funk cover versions ever pressed to wax. It is quite criminal it never enjoyed the exposure it deserved back in the day. As for Peggy Lee covering Otis Reading; do we need to spell out how good it is? The drums on the edit are especially well executed. Vinyl was invented for releases like this!

Review: rare soul from the sunshine state! Phillip Wright only dropped 1 45 single under his own name on TK Disco's tiny Dash label in 1976. Long sought after & coveted by lovers of rare disco & modern soul "keep her happy" has never been reissued in its original 45 format, until now!

Often fetching around the $200 mark for a used copy this sublime slice of funk deserves to be heard by a wider audience, sadly Phillip never achieved the commercial success of his sister Betty but perhaps now this obscure single of his will make people hit the dancefloor in 2015!

Repressed, remastered & re-released in it's original dinked 45 rpm format with all original Dash records artwork intact in conjunction with Joe Stone / TK Disco, Miami FL.

Let Me Show You (long vocal version) (0:30)
Let Me Show You (long instrumental) (0:30)
Review: While Larry Wu's one and only single, 1984's "Let Me Show You", has long been considered an 80s boogie classic, it has remained surprisingly hard to find on 12" - hence this timely reissue. As with the original 12", Wu's sparkling Long Version is featured on the A-side. It's perhaps closer in tone to the chart-bothering Jam & Lewis '80s soul sound than the grittier, funkier New York boogie style - think chiming melodies, eyes-closed guitar riffs and a chunky synth-heavy groove - the quality of Wu's soulful lead vocal really is in the top tier. There's also another chance to check the fantastic, dub style flipside Instrumental, which features all manner of dropouts, delay-laden vocal snippets, jammed-out synth solos and slighty more floor-friendly percussion. Essential.
