Review: Andrew Gillespie first came to our attention last year via the release of his first Gillespie & Co seven-inch, Sunshine People - a fine chunk of celebratory summer soul for sweltering afternoons and deep orange sunsets. Here he switches tack slightly, recruiting vocalist Raphaelia to sing positive lyrics over a carnival-friendly barrio-funk workout (think whistles, epic drum fills, jaunty flute solos and all manner of layered hand percussion). Turn to the flip for "Papa's Getto" [sic], a wonderfully loose, fluid and all-action instrumental version that allows Gillespie's punchy horn lines, scratchy funk guitars and stacked percussion hits a little more room to breathe.

Review: Boom: straight back to the 70s via Gloucester, Andrew Gillespie gets his wah-wahs out for the lads and his flutes out for the lasses with this powerful raw-funk jam. Super-charged with rich vocals from soul sister Raphaelia, her "good riddance to bad rubbish" vibe gives the groove that extra bit of pep before we drop into a crispy percussion break that rolls for days. Loaded with a tighter, beat-focused version from DJ Tron, this one hustles hard. The one for you.

Review: More raw funk genius from Kris Holmes: "Tight Situation" is a tight Hammond and guitar groove with just a mild drum break stroking the background to keep the time. Holmes' Yates persona takes over the A with demonstrative preaching power while the instrumental on the B gives you more than enough time to really lose yourself in the woozy washes of organ and endless bendy twangs. Praise worthy.

Review: The Great Revivers continue their unassailable 2014 assault on the record boxes of funk selectors everywhere with yet another killer seven for the Funk Night label. Brashly titled "Don't Mess with GR" may be, but this Russian quartet always prefer to let their musicianship do the talking and you can't fault the Great Revivers funk here as three odd minutes of prime dirtiness unfolds driven by a killer drum beat. It's complemented well by the more uptempo jam that is "Hard Way To Go" and lays down a marker for what to expect from the Great Revivers forthcoming album.

Review: A fifth slab of 7" shaped funk live and direct from St. Petersburg arrives with the Great Revivers offering another Funk Night release that will invariably keep themselves busy on the turntables of funk establishments everywhere. Lead cut "Rhino's Walk" should be titled "Rhino's Strut" in truth given the sheer confidence the Revivers display as it progresses along driven by a killer drum break. Flip the Rhino over and Great Revivers are on more of a downbeat funk flex with "Dead Dipping" which is all about that frazzled organ. Big up Frank Raines and the Funk Night crew for this one!

Review: Raw Russian instrumental funk from the ever-consistent troupe The Great Revivers. "Electric Avenue" twangs, rolls and parps with a Booker T level balance of guitar, organ and loose limbed drums. "Calibrovka" is a little more playful with its stop/start rhythms and heavier focus on the organs while "B-Boy Shuffle" lives up to its name perfectly thanks to its classic clear break, it's Q&A riff and its cheeky climactic ending. Great stuff.

Review: Since making their debut in 2014, Russian combo The Great Revivers has become one of Funk Night Records' most reliable acts. They're at it again here, serving up two more slabs of goodness inspired by their obsessions with Hammond-heavy grooves, scorching funk and dusty 1970s library music. A-side "Bar-Hop" sounds like their take on the Meters sound, with attractive Hammond riffs rising above flanged funk guitars, heavy bass, fuzz-soaked brass and a bustling, solo-heavy groove. B-side "The Last" explores similar sonic territory but feels a little more relaxed. This time round, it's the jazzy, flanged guitar solos that take centre stage, with their trademark organs merely acting as an impressive accompaniment.

Review: More limited-edition instrumental funk action here from Funk Night Records, as the much-admired imprint welcomes back multi-instrumentalist and lo-fi recording specialist Jeffrey Scott Greer. In keeping with the warts-and-all sound explored on his series of straight-to-tape albums Schematics For a Blank Stare, Greer and his regular band of collaborators deliver left-of-centre funk compositions full of warming chords, loose-limbed grooves and all manner of energetic instrument solos. The most dancefloor-focused of the tracks is 'Funky 424', a low-slung affair smothered in fuzzy special effects and ethereal flute solos. 'Lovely Lady' sounds sparse in comparison, with a breezier and more picturesque tone. It comes accompanied by a short, beat-free 'Reprise' mix that focuses on the track's wonderful electric piano motifs.

Review: Funk Night Records were quick to snap up some newly recorded material from Philly psych band Grimace Federation as soon as they heard it, and for good reason. These tracks were recorded during a weekend in a session with producer John McEntire and manage to sound raw and distorted yet seductive. "Dotsero" echoes the magic of Adrian Younge with its big horns and stirring soul, while "Starspots" is a more expansive track, with nebulous chords, busy drum playing and plenty of jazz elements making it a real cosmic voyage.
