Bandits On Mars
Cat: RK 45060. Rel: 15 Oct 15
Bandits On Mars (3:18)
CLBR 35 (3:37)
Review: Ahead of their new album S.P.A.C.E, Italy's funkiest movie score team Calibro get fuzzy with two brand new heaters. "Bandits On Mars" takes a slightly cosmic route with star-gazing synths before dropping into a grungy riff that's backed by the sleaziest bassline you'll hear this side of Michaelmas. "CLBR 35" is a slinkier, more soundtracky affair with some sugar-sweet wah wahs and delicate Hammond story-telling. Think Lalo Schifrin reimagined by Cookin' On 3 Burners after a tonked up gym session. Furiously funky.

Stan Lee
Cat: RK 45081. Rel: 21 Nov 19
Stan Lee (feat Illa J) (3:35)
Stan Lee (instrumental) (3:34)
Review: Rolling Stone magazine once described funk-fuelled dancefloor revivalists Calibro 35 as "the most fascinating, retro-maniac and genuine thing that has happened to Italy in the past few years". It's certainly true that they have an impeccable track record, with their numerous albums on Record Kicks being particularly potent. "Stan Lee" is their first and presumably only single of 2019: a languid chunk of soundtrack inspired psychedelic soul/hip-hop fusion that comes laden with rapped and sung vocals by J Dilla's younger brother Illa J. The band's instrumental version takes pride of place on Side B, allowing listeners to wallow in their intricate production and evocative musical choices.

Discomania
Discomania (limited 7")
Cat: RK 45110. Rel: 08 May 25
Discomania (3:07)
Jazz Carnival (3:47)
Review: The Milanese outfit dive headlong into cinematic Afro-disco on this limited 7", reworking two cult dancefloor staples with characteristic flair. On the A-side, their version of Piero Umiliani's 'Discomania' hits with tightened syncopation and swirling synth arrangements, turning the cosmic Italo-disco cut into a hypnotic afrobeat strut. Flip it over for a rich reimagining of Azymuth's 'Jazz Carnival'iCalibro 35 boost the groove with deep-bottomed funk and crisp horns, pushing the original's samba swing into widescreen. Known for their work at the intersection of funk, soundtrack and psych, the band bring sharp musicianship and warm analogue heat to both sides of this essential 45.

Calibro 35 & Marco Castello - "Lunedi Cinema" (1:57)
Calibro 35 - "Chaser" (3:02)
Review: Calibro 35's latest release showcases the band's ability to explore new sonic territories while paying tribute to the legends of jazz-funk. This limited edition 7" vinyl includes two standout tracks, 'Lunedi Cinema feat. Marco Castello' and 'Chaser.' 'Lunedi Cinema' revisits Lucio Dalla's iconic theme from RAI TV's Monday Movie, infusing it with a fresh jazzy disco-funk feel. Marco Castello's scat singing adds a playful yet sophisticated layer to this energetic reimagining, keeping the spirit of the original intact while adding a modern flair. On the flip side, 'Chaser' is a groovy jazz-funk stormer originally composed by Piero Umiliani for the 1975 noir film The Body. Calibro 35's rendition brings the song's cinematic intensity to life, weaving in funky rhythms that make it an electrifying listen. Calibro 35 once again prove their versatility and creativity in this thrilling release.

Lunedi Cinema (feat Marco Castello) (2:06)
Review: Calibro 35 recalibrate with Exploration, a fresh dive into cinematic jazz-funk marking their first full-length LP on the independent since 2023's Nouvelle Aventures, continuing the path set by last year's 'Jazzploitation' EP. Yarning vintage soundtrack stylings with contemporary groove, the Milan group balance reverent covers - like Roy Ayers' 'Coffy' and Bob James' 'Nautilus' with bold, golden originals. Lead tune 'Reptile Strut', not to mention 'The Twang' and 'Pied De Poule', twine round taut rhythms, lush horn lines, and evocative cinematic textures. The band tips its hat to touchstones like Herbie Hancock, Lalo Schifrin, and Italian great Piero Umiliani, whose 'Discomania' appears on the accompanying limited clear blue 7" single, backed with 'Jazz Carnival'.

Serenade For A Satellite (3:15)
Review: Hot off the back of being sampled by Dre, Italian scorers and all-round funkateers Calibro 35 lay down their seventh album in as many years. The eerie sci-fi opener "74 Days After Landing" sets the cosmic tone before we're pinged between planets like space debris on "Bandits On Mars" and establish positive satellite link ups with Africa from our space base on "Ungawa Bay Launch Complex". Deeper into our intergalactic mission we get paranoid alien fear to the organ-tickling Iron Butterfly-style sounds of "An Asteroid Called Death" and get poignantly homesick to the sweeping strings of "A Future We Never Lived". The album closes with "Serenade For A Satellite", a sparse funeral dirge of a closure, we realise there's no way home... But if you're stranded in space with just this album, things could be a lot worse.
