Notes: Houghton Festival has become a symbolic reminder of the integrity and resilience of the dance and electronic music community in the face of sometimes challenging and unprecedented circumstances. This much is clear following the cancellation of the festival several weeks back...

Upon arrival each guest was due to be provided with a book showcasing the creative values and personality behind what has become much more than a festival. Whilst originally intended as a gift for festival attendees we are now happy to present this as a cultural offering: a book spanning 147 pages featuring hand drawn illustrations, photography, long form interviews, think pieces, musical reflection and beyond...

The annual is a collaboration between Ransom Note and Houghton.

Notes: In the two years since the first edition of Traktor Bible was published, the Traktor Bible has become the de-facto standard reference for digital DJs using Native Instruments Traktor. Thousand of readers worldwide (including the R&D departments of some well-known controller manufacturers) use Traktor Bible to learn Traktor, for troubleshooting purposes, and to create customized controller mappings.

UK magazine Future Music reviewed the Traktor Bible 2nd edition and rated it with 9/10.

The Traktor 2 Bible is the practically oriented compendium covering all aspects of digital DJing with Traktor Pro 2, Traktor Scratch Pro 2, Traktor Duo 2 and Traktor Scratch Duo 2. The book provides answers to questions that Traktor newbies are faced with and it also covers features that experienced users may struggle with. The selection and the weighting of the topics were strongly influenced by research in the Traktor user forum on the Native Instruments website. This was to make sure that the issues that prey large on the minds of Traktor users are covered in detail and that useful solutions can be provided.

The Traktor 2 Bible uses a proven practically oriented approach. In the Traktor Bible all information regarding one topic is brought together in one chapter and things are explained from a practical point of view. This includes documenting the MIDI commands that are needed for automating the workflow.

For example, the chapter covering cue points and loops describes how cue points and loops are set and stored in the Traktor user interface. Additionally, the same chapter contains all information about the MIDI commands of the presented features. This approach makes it very easy to map the necessary functions to the keyboard or a MIDI and HID controller.

Several chapters contain tutorials with step-by-step explanations of the more complicated Traktor features. Many How-To sections show how things are done in the Traktor user interface and how they can be implemented via MIDI mapping.

Notes: The next instalment in the Disco Pogo Tribute series is the legendary electronic artist Aphex Twin. This follows the hugely successful Disco Pogo Tribute to Daft Punk. Like Daft Punk, the people behind Disco Pogo have had a long-standing relationship with Richard D. James for over 30 years via their 90s magazine Jockey Slut. The book is edited by Disco Pogo editor Jim Butler and features interviews, essays and features from the best music journalists working today - including contributions from Juno Daily's own Ben Willmott and Matt Anniss. It features an iconic cover portrait of Aphex by seminal photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, plus a huge amount of great photography of Richard since the very beginning from some of the best music photographers in the world. Notes: The story of Jackson C. Frank is tragic. The victim of a school fire in his youth, struggling with homelessness and mental illness throughout his life, half-blinded in old age before his death in 1999, Frank met continuous obstacles. And yet he enjoyed a shining moment with the release of Jackson C. Frank on Columbia Records in 1965. The album would go on to be seen as one of the greatest folk albums of the decade - maybe of all time - and its opening track "Blues Run the Game" has become a standard covered by hundreds.

Jim Abbott's book is the result of years of research piecing together evidence, relations and apocryphal stories from Frank's life. It is also part memoir, as Abbott cared for Frank through the final decade of his life. Their friendship was fraught with difficulties, which Abbott portrays with the honesty of a journalist. In doing so, he draws a portrait of a uniquely gifted songwriter, blessed with talent and besotted by demons. At 250 pages, Abbott's memoir shows a flawed and caring individual whose struggle was best depicted in his songs.

Following the release of Jackson C. Frank: The Clear, Hard Light of Genius, Ba Da Bing will release three volumes of Jackson C. Frank: The Complete Recordings in early 2015, compiling work from throughout his life, including unreleased material.

Notes: Mechanical Fantasy Box is Cowley's homoerotic journal, or as he called it, "graphic accounts of one man's sex life." The journal begins in 1974 and ends in 1980 on his 30th birthday. It chronicles his slow rise to fame from lighting technician at The City Disco to crafting a ground-breaking 16-minute remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" to performing with Sylvester at the SF Opera House. Vivid descriptions are told of cruising in '70s SoMA sex venues to primal highs in Buena Vista Park and composing pornophonics in his Castro apartment. The entries are introspective and show a very out-front, alive person going through the throes of gay liberation post-Stonewall.

French-born artist and Berlin resident Gwenael Rattke works in collage, silkscreen, photography and Xerox graphics. Rattke's collage works borrow from the visual codes of the 60s and 70s. Intricate, ornamental and excessive, they present "an imagined past fired with beauty and sexual freedom." Notes: The self-styled definitive history of the humble art of spinning plates of vinyl, the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life steps up to the turntables with worthy pretensions. The work of journalists Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, who, between them, have worked on The Face, i-D, Rolling Stone and Musik, they certainly know their deep house from their speed garage. But while Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is an impressively knowledgeable compilation of information, they never quite decide whether this is an intellectual resource, a complete history, or if they're playing these records just for kicks.

So in the preface fun is poked at abstract nonsense about postmodern intertextuality and the pair thunder into well-reasoned, impassioned debate about the DJ being a modern-day shaman--pulse-racing stuff, which makes it all the more uncomfortable when it segues into an unremittingly dull chronological history of the invention of the record deck. The pace quickens with an excellent chapter on Northern Soul, and in hot pursuit follow impressive histories of the reggae, hip-hop and disco genres. But then Acid House, perhaps Britain's most important musical evolution ever, is given short shrift and techno is dismissed over a mere ten pages as house's swotty offspring. The term definitive, it seems, has been faded out of the mix.

The Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is no Bible for the penitent vinyl worshipper and its difficult chronology makes it an uncomfortable read. Still, if you think that Northern Soul records were made in Leeds and disco began with the Bee Gees, there's a wealth of knowledge here that'll put you right.

The book contains a heart-wrenching collection of photographs from the Vainio family archive, a broad range of artistic contributions (text, photographic and visual remembrances) from Mika's artist friends and collaborators, an Updated and exhaustive Mika discography, Jennifer Lucy Allen's unedited transcript for her The Wire magazine 2013 "Invisible Jukebox' - one of Mika's most animated media responses, a variety of Pansonic ephemera from Paul Smith's own Blast First archives, and an album length exclusive CD of previously unreleased Pansonic performance recordings - "Turku Moai - live on Rapa Nui"."

Notes: This book catalogues a collection of flyers and other house music related ephemera from the years 1983 to 1989, courtesy of Mario "Liv It Up" Luna, a DJ living in the Pilsen neighbourhood of Chicago during this time. These flyers, also called pluggers, were used for promotional purposes. They would be placed in record stores and passed out at schools and on the street to help get the word out about upcoming house music events. Although by no means encyclopaedic, this collection documents a variety of figures from Chicago's emerging house scene: first generation "kings of house" alongside the WBMX Hot Mix 5 and other lesser-known DJs at a variety of venues.

Also included in the mix are promoters, record stores, labels, and an assortment of party crews and dance groups who contributed to the growth and atmosphere of house music in Chicago. This book offers a taste of what many consider to be the best times of their lives, and for others acts as a gateway to one of greatest eras in the history of Chicago music.

Singer and guitarist Fred Cole was playing music since the early 1960's - beginning his career as "Deep Soul Cole - the white Stevie Wonder", then joining the psychedelic garage rock band the Lollipop Shoppe / The Weeds. In the 70's and early 80's Fred and Toody Cole played in various punk, country and hard rock bands. In the late 1980's, they formed Dead Moon with Andrew Loomis. This band went on to become mythic and legendary. They lived by a DIY code built around superstitions and avoidance of conventional music industry pitfalls. Their story is completely unique amongst the pantheon on rock bands - a group who never sold out, never gave in and built a legacy of art and community piece by piece in a sustainable way almost unheard of. The book is a tribute to their unique aesthetic, unbelievable twisted path of a story, and roll as pioneers of the Portland music scene.

The book tells the entire Dead Moon saga in the words of the band itself. Just the voices of Fred, Toody and Andrew. Matt Anniss is a journalist and author specializing in electronic music, DJing and club culture. Since leaving the magazine in 2008 he's become a regular contributor to Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy Daily and DJ Magazine, specializing in historical aspects of dance music culture.

As an author, Matt Anniss has written over 50 non-fiction books for children and young adults, including a number of "how-to" books on DJing, podcasting and music production. In 2017 he co-authored The Vinyl Owners Manual (with Patrick Fuller) for iconic British brand Haynes Publishing, which became one of the brand's best-selling titles of 2018. Started in 1986, they documented the revolution in youth culture that took London from the snootiness of rare groove to the all-in craziness of acid house. Put together by a bunch of cultural hooligans from Slough and Windsor, Boy's Own gave a voice to the suburban soulboy and the 'casual' culture of the terraces, reporting in hilarious detail the tunes, the fashions, the slang and the parties. Boy's Own was Andy Weatherall, Terry Farley, Steve Hall, Steve Mayes and Cymon Eckel; plus a lengthy cast of illustrious contributors include Paul Oakenfold (who wrote the very first Balearic feature anywhere), Norman Jay, Chris Sullivan and all the key figures of acid house. Weatherall featured in seminal dance music magazine Jockey Slut many times during its lifetime. All his interviews from the publication are included within this tribute to The Guv'nor. Jockey Slut magazine ran from 1993 - 2004. The influential club culture publication was started by John Burgess and Paul Benney as a self published Manchester based fanzine. It became a monthly when it moved to London in 1999. Jockey Slut was notable for being more music-centric, left-field and irreverent than other dance music magazines. It also bagged some real exclusives during its tenure giving first ever interviews to The Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk and The Avalanches.

Artist, producer and DJ Robi Insinna aka Headman released his first album 'It Rough' in 2001. He has also released tracks as 'Manhead' and remixed the likes of Roxy Music, Gossip, Franz Ferdinand , Richard Fearless, Nitzer Ebb, The Units, Unknown Cases, Gina X and Klein & M.B.O. The new album "6" feels like the conclusion of the music he has been putting out over the years. There are many collaborations on the album, with friends and artists he has worked with over the years.

'6' is quite an eclectic album with a strong grounding in electronica whilst also staying true to the previous output of Robi and Relish Recordings. Some tracks can sound more like post punk ESG influenced, some more like pre-detroit machine funk, and some of the vocal tracks have a more pop sensibility!
The album was produced with loads of analog equipment which gives that organic feel, but Robi always stresses that he does not want to be just Retro, but take the best from the past and use it together with the technologies from now to create something modern.
Style is always something very important for his projects, the use of old synths, guitar pedals, tape delays, drum machines or emulations, and old Vintage gear was essential to create a vintage / classy sounding album, which is also reflected in the art book and the video. The video is filled with references from the past, late 70's 80's and 90's but again with a style and taste that makes it very modern.
