Hail Murray!: The Bay Area Punk Photography Of Murray Bowles 1982-1996 by Murray Bowles
Cat: 1056305 Rel: 09 Apr 25

Vibrant images from the San Francisco Bay Area Punk Rock Scene in a deluxe hardcover
Notes: Murray Bowles photographed Bay Area punk for four decades, capturing its infectious energy, wild creativity, and ragged tenderness everywhere he found it.

From San Francisco's Mabuhay Gardens to Berkeley's 924 Gilman- and the countless basements, backyards, and warehouses in between- Murray was there, camera in hand, the scene's beloved documentarian.

Collected here for the first time, Murray's classic images chronicle a uniquely dynamic and enduring music community in all its chaos and glory.

Featuring hundreds of images of bands such as Green Day, Operation Ivy, Neurosis, Crimpshrine, the Dead Kennedys, MDC, Special Forces, Social Unrest, Spit Boy, Melvins, Gwar, Soundgarden, NOFX, The Offspring and many, many more.

This collection of photographs documents and celebrates the punk music scene from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s.

Dancehall: The Rise Of Jamaican Dancehall Culture by Beth Lesser & Soul Jazz Books (reissue)
Cat: 977690 Rel: 09 Nov 23

Deluxe flexibound 15th anniversary edition
Notes: New edition of Dancehall, Beth Lesser's seminal photography and style book capturing the rise of Jamaican Dancehall Culture in the 1980s. The book also features a new introduction by the British fashion designer and art curator Duro Olowu.

Featuring 100s and 100s of amazing photographs - all with accompanying text, interviews and biographies,'Dancehall' is an essential reference book for anyone interested in Reggae and captures a previously unseen era of musical culture, fashion and lifestyle in stunning, vibrant colour.

Aside from the music, this book is as much about Jamaican fashion and style. Beth Lesser's Dancehall photographs in this book have directly influenced fashion brands including Aime Leon Dore ('Kingston 1983' collection), recent Levi's Vintage and Farah collections.

Dancehall is a culture that encompasses music, fashion, drugs, guns, art, community, technology, and more. Born in the 1950s out of the neighbourhood soundsystems of Kingston, Dancehall grew to its height in the 1980s before a massive influx of drugs and guns made the scene too dangerous for many. Today Dancehall remains at the centre of Jamaican musical and cultural life. From its roots in Kingston in the 1950s to its heyday in the 1980s, Dancehall conquered the globe spreading to the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Europe and beyond.

In the early 1980s Jamaica was in the throws of political and gang violence - photographer Beth Lesser ventured where few other dared and this book is a never-before-seen record of the exciting, dangerous and vibrant world of Dancehall.

Living in Jamaica in the late 70s and early 80s she photographed and documented a cultural explosion as producers, singers, DJs and soundsystems who all made a living out of the slums of Kingston. With unprecedented access to the incredibly vibrant music scene during this period, Beth Lesser's photographs are a unique way into a previously hidden part of Jamaican culture.

Notes: Close The App, Make The Ting is a collection of ideas shared by Elijah that began in July 2021, as the Covid 19 lockdowns were ending in the UK. Gabba Gabba We Accept You The Wonderous Tale of Joey Ramone By Jay Ruttenberg & Lucinda Schreiber
Cat: 1081935 Rel: 27 Jun 25

A children’s picture book telling the story of a misfit kid who grew up to be a punk rock hero.
Notes: Calling all parents lost in Kids Book Land! Gabba Gabba, We Accept You is a children's picture book telling the story of a misfit kid who grew up to be a punk rock hero. The challenging times that Jeffrey Ross Hyman endured before becoming Joey Ramone speak to young folks navigating the complexities of growing up, via teachable punk stuff: being your own person with your own compass, embracing uniqueness, etc. Jay Ruttenberg & Lucinda Schreiber light the tale righteously with plain-spoken language, lyrical design and colorful illustrations, finding unexpected depths on every page.

About the inspiration for this book, Jay says,

"My daughter just turned 11, so I've spent recent years in children's book land. I think I've read her 97 books about Abraham Lincoln and 12,984 about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It occurred to me that a lot of the life lessons I've been trying to teach her weren't learned through my family or school, but through punk stuff: the importance of being your own person, following your own radar instead of a group's, embracing uniqueness, etc. The Ramones, and in particular Joey, seemed like the perfect embodiment of that. So my big hope for the book is that it tells the story of Joey Ramone, but also, in kind of the biggest way, of what punk rock means, and how it might help a little kid wade through difficult social waters and be their own unique person."

Gabba Gabba We Accept You speaks in well-grounded and wise verbal and visual language to inform and affirm children - young ones and the adult children alike - that their individual personalities have an inspired and inspiring place in the world. In the process of becoming and being a person, there's no one set of rules. The sooner we all know that, the sooner we'll find ourselves in a much better place.

A Book By Minamiryohei
Cat: 1084235

A collage of materials from paintings, drawing, photographs, installations, videos and more.
Notes: The artist MINAMIRYOHEI has cut up and reorganized fragments of all kinds of materials from paintings, drawings, collages, photographs, installations, and videos, and put them into a printed book.

MINAMIRYOHEI has been presenting installation works that focus on "the texture of something to be sensed," which drifts in a "place" composed of a wide variety of elements such as paintings, sculptures, videos, sounds, photographs, lights, ready-made objects, and garbage, and which would be degraded if put into words.

It is a search for "a feeling of being tickled by the other side of the atmosphere," and "A bOOk" is a new attempt to make the phenomenon of representation appear in the "place" of printed matter.

Wired Up! Glam, Proto Punk, & Bubblegum: European Picture Sleeves 1970-1976
Cat: 467204 Rel: 11 Sep 12

384 pages, hardpaper, black & white/colour
Notes: In these 384 pages of garish, pop and glam rock european picture sleeve glory, the Wired Up! celebrates the sights and sounds of the zeitgeist aberration that was early 70's glitter rock records; where the flash, shock and outrageousness of the picture sleeve oftentimes proved just as important as the explosive sounds within.

A renaissance of style, a riot of color and the raving rocking rebirth of the three-minute-pop single, the Wired Up! Is not only an early clue to the new direction rock and roll was taking in the 1970's, but the final statement on a disposable era's lasting appeal.

Silence Is No Reaction: Forty Years Of Subhumans by Ian Glasper
Cat: 941089 Rel: 18 May 23

For the first time ever, the whole story of the Subhumans straight from the recollections of every single band member, past and present, and a dizzying array of their closest friends and peers, with not a single stone left unturned.
Notes: Formed in Wiltshire, England, in 1980, the Subhumans are rightly held in high regard as one of the best punk rock bands to ever hail from the UK.

Over the course of five timeless studio albums and just as many classic EPs, not to mention well over 1,000 gigs around the world, they have blended serious anarcho punk with a demented sense of humour and genuinely memorable tunes to create something quite unique and utterly compelling. For the first time ever, their whole story is told, straight from the recollections of every band member past and present, as well as a dizzying array of their closest friends and peers, with not a single stone left unturned. Bolstered with hundreds of flyers and exclusive photos, it's the definitive account of the much-loved band.

Praise

"It's all here: the genesis of the band, the practising, the song-writing, the recordings, the gigs, the original split and the reformation ... in fact everything you could possibly want to know about this very special band."
Tony Whatley of Suspect Device

"Ian Glasper captures the emotion and excitement surrounding one of the most enduring punk bands on the planet. With an extensiveisome might say forensicinarrative, this book really gets under the skin of a perennial favourite who have rarely put a foot wrong."
Nathan Haywire, Louder Than War

"Subhumans have integrity in spades, and you can't buy that. They were important then and are important now."
Sean Forbes of Wat Tyler and Hard Skin

"Subhumans are special both on and off stage. It's the passion that's evident onstage, with those beautifully constructed lyrics spat out with every breathiand that charged energy they generate, that sweeps through the crowd and leaves us feeling changed."
Ruth Elias of Hagar The Womb

"They're one of my favourite bands in the world, but a band is only as good as the people in it ... and the Subhumans are the real deal."
Stu Pid of Police Bastard

"Their songs seem to exist out of time, somehow always relevant. And they've stuck to their gunsithere's this stubborn defiance in the face of fashion, and a glorious, unaffected honesty."
iWinston Smith

"They are the ultimate punk band, with the most genuine, inclusive, informative, approachable attitude, and such amazing music ... tight and edgy as fuck, and so professionalia joy to watch."
Peter Jones of Paranoid Visions

Notes: If we are somewhat over-inundated with rock biographies right now, then you can trust The Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson to come up with something different. Punk 45: The Singles Cover Art Of Punk 1976-80 (by Jon Savage/Stuart Baker)
Cat: 904641 Rel: 28 Oct 22

Paperback book of original punk 7" record cover art
Notes: Brand new edition of Soul Jazz Records' massive deluxe 400-page Punk 45s cover art book edited and compiled by Jon Savage (author of the seminal book on punk, England's Dreaming) and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records).

This new edition comes with a new introduction from Bobbie Gillespie, founder of Primal Scream (who has recently also published his memoirs Tenement Kid).

Contributors include Peter Saville, Richard Hell, Richard H Kirk, Seymour Stein, Geoff Travis, Martin Moscrop, Glenn Branca, Jamie Reid, Dave Robinson, Roger Armstrong, Martin Mills, Gee Vaucher, Savage Pencil, Dennis Morris and more.

This book is a revelatory guide to hundreds and hundreds of original 7" record cover sleeve designs - visual artefacts found at the heart of the most radical and anarchistic musical movement of the 20th century.

As well as the encyclopaedic visual imagery featured inside, the book also includes interviews with a number of significant figures in punk music: artists and groups including Richard Hell, Martin Moscrop (A Certain Ratio), Richard H Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire), Glenn Branca and David Thomas (Pere Ubu); record label owners including Seymour Stein (Sire Records), Geoff Travis (Rough Trade), Roger Armstrong (Chiswick), Martin Mills (Beggars Banquet), Dave Robinson (Stiff Records), David Brown (Dangerhouse); and the celebrated designers involved in creating punk's original iconic imagery - Peter Saville (Factory Records), Gee Vaucher (Crass Records), Jamie Reid (Sex Pistols), Gee Vaucher (Crass Records) and Dennis Morris (Public Image Limited).

The revolutionary do-it-yourself ethic of punk was applied to the aesthetic of design as much as it was to music, and record sleeves acted as lo-fi signifiers of anarchy, style, fashion, politics and more with an urban and suburban invective courtesy of the 1000s of new bands - punk, post-punk, pre-punk, nearly-punk and more - that emerged at the end of the 1970s.

This book is an exhaustive, thorough and exciting celebration of the stunning artwork of punk music - everything from the most celebrated and iconic designs through to the stark beauty of the cheapest do-it-yourself lo-fi obscurities.

Mechanical Fantasy Box: The Homoerotic Journals Of Patrick Cowley
Cat: 747801 Rel: 11 Nov 19

Journals of Patrick Cowley, with illustrations by Gwenael Rattke
Notes: Mechanical Fantasy Box is Cowley's homoerotic journal, or as he called it, "graphic accounts of one man's sex life." The journal begins in 1974 and ends in 1980 on his 30th birthday. It chronicles his slow rise to fame from lighting technician at The City Disco to crafting a ground-breaking 16-minute remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" to performing with Sylvester at the SF Opera House. Vivid descriptions are told of cruising in '70s SoMA sex venues to primal highs in Buena Vista Park and composing pornophonics in his Castro apartment. The entries are introspective and show a very out-front, alive person going through the throes of gay liberation post-Stonewall.

French-born artist and Berlin resident Gwenael Rattke works in collage, silkscreen, photography and Xerox graphics. Rattke's collage works borrow from the visual codes of the 60s and 70s. Intricate, ornamental and excessive, they present "an imagined past fired with beauty and sexual freedom." For this book Rattke created 25 original illustrations inspired by selected entries, 3 street maps documenting locations mentioned herein and 4 collages of photos, ephemera and notes Patrick stuffed inside the journal. We've included Patrick's doodles too, as well as introductory essays by Josh Cheon, Theresa McGinley and Jorge Socarras.

Stunt Rocker: The Many Adventures Of Andy Ellison by Andy Ellison

Autobiography of one of rock music's 'enfants terribles' - from the mod beat of the mid 60s, psychedelic pop of the late 60s glam rock of the mid-seventies punk rock of the late seventies.
Notes: Autobiography of one of rock music's 'enfants terribles' - from the mod beat of the mid 60s, psychedelic pop of the late 60s glam rock of the mid-seventies punk rock of the late seventies.

Andy Ellison fronted many cult bands like John's Children (with Marc Bolan) Jet with members of Sparks and Roxy Music, The Radio Stars, all of which would see Andy performing hanging from lighting rigs atop of speaker stacks, starting a riot on The Who's tour of Germany and getting thrown off said tour, leaping into audiences from the stage and subsequently damaging himself in most performances. But, aside from all that, the real stories start to come through...of which they appear to be relentless like a machine gun each one more incredulous than the other. The book is liberally sprinkled with many photographs all the way through, not clumped into two or three batches like most books, and boasts a foreword by the one and only Simon Napier-Bell. Andy has some of the best stories of anyone from the music industry...and they're in this book!

This book also comes with an accompanying 22 track CD with many rare and unheard tracks from Andy's own archive. Both CD and book designed by Les Clark.

Cat: 1047711 Rel: 09 Dec 24

The true story of the U.K. punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and record labels that created it
Notes: As the seventies drew to a close and the media declared punk dead and buried, a whole new breed of band was emerging from the gutter. Harder and faster than their '76-'77 predecessors, not to mention more aggressive and political, the likes of Discharge, The Exploited and G.B.H. were to prove not only more relevant but arguably just as influential. Several years in the making and featuring hundreds of new interviews and photographs, "Burning Britain" is the true story of the U.K. punk scene from 1980 to 1984 told for the first time by the bands and record labels that created it. Covering the country region by region, author Ian Glasper profiles legendary bands like Vice Squad, Angelic Upstarts, Blitz, Anti-Nowhere League, Cockney Rejects and the U.K. Subs as well as the more obscure groups like Xtract, The Skroteez and Soldier Dolls. The grim reality of being a teenage punk rocker in Thatcher's Britain resulted in some of the most primal and potent music ever committed to plastic. "Burning Britain" is the definitive overview of that previously overlooked era.

The Birth Of Ska: From Mento To Studio One by Noel Hawks & Jah Floyd
Cat: 1038243 Rel: 11 Dec 24

The birth and growth of the Jamaican recording industry, told through first-hand accounts
Notes: The birth and growth of the Jamaican recording industry...

Records have played an integral part in the history of Jamaican music and the importance of making records, as opposed to making music, can never be overstated.

These are the stories, told through first-hand accounts wherever possible, of the men and women... manufacturers, musicians, arrangers and record producers... who made the records and who made the sound of reggae available worldwide.

"An absolutely crucial survey of the origins of the Jamaican music industry replete with chapter and verse quotes from many of the pivotal movers and shakers. A wealth of new information, expertly marshalled: this is a book whose time has come."

Steve Barrow- Co-author of 'Reggae The Rough Guide'

"Noel Hawks' history of Jamaican studios and the characters involved provides an intriguing insight into the development of ska, rock steady and reggae. His lifelong love and deep knowledge of the music prove to be invaluable assets as he takes us on a journey from the primitive 'direct-to-disc' mento recordings of the Fifties through to the sophisticated roots and dub reggae of the Seventies. As both a music fan and a reggae business insider he has had access to the main players in the Jamaican music scene, and this book offers a genuine and unique insight into Kingston's studios and the producers and musicians who worked in them."

Chris Lane- Fashion Records

"Any music reference book should balance knowledge of an expert and enthusiasm of a fan in roughly equal measure. Noel Hawks' 'Jamaican Recordings' unquestionably succeeds in doing both. The wealth of facts and information that Noel has amassed in almost fifty years of researching and collecting reggae and its musical antecedents are presented here in a way that will show any reader that Noel still gets as much pleasure out of finding new classic music, not to mention acquiring new know how about it, as he and others among us did when we started our individual collector odysseys.

'Jamaican Recordings' is a fine read and a book that anybody with more than a passing interest in Jamaican recordings will need to add to their library right away."

Bright Young Things: The Art & Philosophy Of El Records
Cat: 1071910

The first book detailing the history of influential indie label El records
Notes: Existing for a few short years (1984 - 1988), El records was perhaps the most 'cult' of the UK so-called 'indie' labels. El records was created in 1984 by Mike Alway. Alway was A&R man for Cherry Red, signing artists such as Everything But the Girl, The Monochrome Set and Felt. Alway left Cherry Red to help run Blanco Y Negro (an offshoot of WEA) but soon felt constrained by the conservativism of the commercial music sector and left to set up his own label. El was once described as 'the most innately English record label there has ever been' and yet had a global appeal. Alway must be the only record label boss to have had four songs written about him.

Alway's mercurial approach was to take complete control of the repertoire, the philosophy of the label's releases and even the titles of songs in the manner of pop impresarios of the past. Alway became a curator, selecting, shaping and overseeing the records issued on El. He employed songwriters proficient in classical pop techniques such as Nicholas Currie (AKA Momus) and Philippe Auclair (AKA Louis Philippe) who in addition to issuing their own records wrote, arranged and performed for other el artistes and used creative talentssuch as photographer Nick Wesolowski and designer Jim Phelan to create the El "look".

El had a unique flavour eschewing the traditions of rock and indie music of the mid 1980s, exhibiting instead a taste for 1960s bubblegum and chamber pop, the European chanson tradition, Latin rhythms and film scores (one of El's key players was child prodigy Simon Turner who wrote music for the films of Derek Jarman).

The ethos of the label was decidedly un-macho and many of El's key artists were female. El's first single "I, Bloodbrother Be" by Shock Headed Peters was an uncompromising gay anthem. Alway saw El as a celebration of elegance and beauty, in his own words, "a pop world beyond leather jackets and jeans". While record sales were disappointing, this unique blend was critically acclaimed in the UK and popular in America and mainland Europe while in Japan El had a profound effect, directly influencing the Shibuya-kei phenomenon that included Pizzicato Five, Cornelius and Kahimi Karie.

Bright Young Things is the first book to tell the fascinating story of El, one of the most influential indie labels of all time

About this book

The growth of the Jamaican recording industry

Records have played an integral part in the history of Jamaican music and the importance of making records, as opposed to making music, can never be overstated.

These are the stories, told through first-hand accounts wherever possible, of the men and women- manufacturers, musicians, singers, deejays, arrangers and record producers- who made the records and who made the sound of reggae available worldwide.

"Clearly this series is set to become the standard reference work on Jamaican music, such is its dizzying depths of research and the vast amount of oral evidence it has compiled from many years of interviews alongside critical quotes from recognised existing literature."

Steve Barker- The Wire

"In this third volume the authors skilfully weave interview material into its narrative. Among other histories, it examines the work of Lee 'Scratch' Perry, who transcended genre and became author of his own productions and, in the process, influenced the development of the major global artist Bob Marley. It examines the development of dub, the studio process that transformed the music, and in doing so exerted yet another influence on popular music on the world scale. It also examines the work of Lloyd 'King Jammy' James who utilised digital technological innovation to become a champion of sound system and record production and, thus, became the Eighties. equivalent of the earlier innovator Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd.

All this, and much more, is told by many of the protagonists who created the phenomenon of reggae as a cultural force that has travelled far beyond the confines of Jamaica."

Steve Barrow - Co-Author of "Reggae The Rough Guide"

"Noel Hawks' & Jah Floyd's third book on the history of the Jamaican recording business is another triumph. As with the first two volumes, they seamlessly weave quotes and recollections from the key players into the narrative, giving the reader a unique, and genuine, insight into the development of Jamaican music and the business of selling it. An essential read for anyone interested in ska or reggae and for all music lovers."

Chris Lane - Fashion Records

"I can confidently say, without fear of contradiction, that the final part of Noel Hawks' & Jah Floyd's trilogy is every bit as meticulously researched and mentally stimulating as the first two volumes. It may be that no history of Jamaican music can ever be totally definitive given how many of reggae's key singers, players and producers had already left Earth before anyone had the opportunity to get their takes on how it evolved. But, as of now, you will not find a more accomplished telling of the tale than that which is presented across the three volumes of 'Jamaican Recordings'... an Order of Distinction-worthy accomplishment that should henceforth become an essential component of everyone's reggae library."

What Have We Got: The Turbulent Story Of Oi by Simon Spence
Cat: 1055980 Rel: 07 Nov 24

What Have We Got? is the story of a musical movement that became a national concern in the eighties and still divides opinion today
Notes: The only book to consider Oi! as a distinct genre within punk rock, What Have We Got? is the story of a musical movement that became a national concern in the eighties and still divides opinion today.

Drawing on new interviews with Sham 69, Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects, Crown Court, Lion's Law, The Templars and many more, Simon Spence considers the genre's inception and noble intentions, how it fell into infamy, and where it lies now.

With a growing and formidable audience in the US, Europe, Asia, South America and the UK, Oi! is as alive as it has ever been, and without the far-right associations that plagued its past.

"A great book: doesn't beat around the bush and a fair account of the Oi! scene from day 1 to the present day" Graham Saxby, The Warriors

'A corker of a book. Spanning the whole history of the scene up until the modern day this book delivers, without bias, a real life glimpse of what we know and love.' Trevor Taylor, Crown Court

"Simon has hit the nail on the head: he did his research 100%. A lot of crap has been in written in the past so it's nice to see an accurate account of the scene." Chris Wright, Crashed Out

"Great book breaking down the history of this music genre and the trouble that has shadowed it since the beginning... stories galore & nice glossy pics as well" Phil Templar

"A well written and thoroughly researched book, with stories and recollections from people who were actually there" Deptford John

The Art Of Darkness: The History Of Goth by John Robb
Cat: 916175 Rel: 23 Mar 23

The first ever complete overview of Goth culture
Notes: Finally, after a decade of work, countless interviews and immersing himself into the culture, John Robb's definitive book is a journey far into The Art Of Darkness. The first in-depth book on Goth is a deep dive into the enduring culture and the social, historical and political backdrop that created the space for The Art Of Darkness to thrive.

680 pages with interviews with the likes of Andrew Eldritch, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Cult, The Banshees, The Damned, Einsturzende Neubauten, Danielle Dax, Johnny Marr, Trent Reznor, Adam Ant, Laibach, The Cure, Nick Cave and many others, this is a deepdive and walk on the dark side and into the very heartland of Goth.

Every generation has got to deal with the blues - embrace the melancholy. Find a beauty in the darkness, a poetry in sex and death...Whether it's the Roman love of ghost stories, European macabre folk tales of the Middle Ages, Romantic poets, or the original Gothic tribes sacking the Eternal City, a walk on the dark side has always had its attractions. In the post-punk period, Generation Xerox saw music, clothes and culture come together to create one of the most enduring pop cultures of them all that still resonates to this day... Goth.

It may have been a retrospective term for a scene that was already thriving, but its back story goes back millennia. The book starts with the fall of Rome and ends with Instagram and Tik Tok influencers, taking diversions through Lord Byron, European folk tales, Indian sadhus, Gothic architecture, Romantic poets, philosophers and idealists before coalescing through the dark end of the Sixties' youthquake, and then blooming like Baudelaire's Les Fleurs Du Mal in the post-punk period.

Defying the broken heartland of the post-industrial cities, the semi-forgotten satellite towns and the grim real politic of the Thatcher years, this was a post-punk culture full of dark dance and a death disco. The music soundtracked the style and a Stygian obsidian soundtrack fused the many fragments of culture that had been flirted with in the post-war pop narrative; a darker culture that began to coalesce around the holy trinity of the Doors, the Velvets and the Stooges in the late Sixties before flirting with glam rock, being amplified by punk, exploding as Goth, and then splintering into electronic dance music, industrial, psychobilly and new Goth, before finally filtering through dystopian Hollywood blockbusters, modern literature and throughout the modern world.

In the late Seventies, Goth culture emerged around a clutch of bands who found a new form of beauty in the apocalyptic foreboding, as a new youth tribe took glam rock from the catwalk to the cobbles and onto their own dance floors, creating their own art of darkness.

Krautrock Eruption: An Alternative History Of German Underground In The 60s & 70s By Wolfgang Seidel
Cat: 1071902 Rel: 25 Mar 25

A rousing counter-narrative to the usual depictions of Krautrock, written by Wolfgang Seidel, member of Conrad Schniztler's band Eruption and co-founder of Ton Stein Scherben.
Notes: Seidel's groundbreaking book, which includes unique historical photographs, paints a vivid picture of the old Federal Republic of Germany, with all of its contradictions and struggles. What is now celebrated as Krautrock emerged in this environment, and at the time was an attempt to contribute the soundtrack to the revolution. As a fly onthe wall, Seidel recounts the squats, demos and first concerts of bands such as Cluster, Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel. Just as precisely and vividly, he recapitulates the influence of minimal music composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, the origins of many Krautrock musicians in jazz and the role of the synthesiser.

Wolfgang Seidel delivers a captivating account on Krautrock that dispels many of the founding myths of the first genuinely German pop culture, which above all did not want to be German. In addition, the book is supplemented by a discography of the 50 most important Krautrock records, written by music journalist and Krautrock expert Holger Adam.

Translated from German by Alexander Paulick (member of influential Dusseldorf based avant-garde band Kreidler).
