The Very Polish Cut Outs Sampler Vol 10
Cat: TVPC 018. Rel: 23 Apr 24
Benncart House Bootleg - "Oko Za Oko" (5:50)
Zenit - "Dzisiaj/Jutro" (5:56)
Rodas - "Za Czym?" (4:36)
Niko Deep House Wersja - "Na Jezykach" (5:50)
Powrotna Bossa Nova (Titlez edit) (4:59)
Boryn - "Byles Ze Mna" (5:01)
Expo 2000 - "Fantazja" (3:13)
Review: The Very Polish Cut-Outs Sampler series continues to represent the party-focused arm of one of the most switched-on labels in Polish house music. On the tenth volume of the edit series we get no less than seven upfront joint to sink our teeth into, as Justyna S dices up dusty drums and funky guitar licks for the seriously infectious 'Oka Za Oko' and Zenit brings some big-room disco sass to bear on 'Dzisiaj Jutro'. The flip side sidles into deeper territory with the low-slung delights of Niko's smoky version of 'Na Jezykach' by Ka-ya-h. By the time we reach the final track - EXPO 2000's dreamy downtempo joint 'Fantazja', the pitch has slid down even lower and we're positively kicking back in the backroom with distinctive styles unique to this most esteemed of labels.

Biesmans & Shubostar - "Across The Universe" (5:33)
Biesmans & Dusky - "Back In The Daze" (4:56)
Biesmans & Kasper Bjorke - "Holiday" (feat Jacob Bellens) (6:02)
Biesmans & Zombies In Miami - "Smooth Monday" (7:02)
Biesmans - "All Day, Every Day" (4:19)
Review: Biesmans' contribution to Watergate's mix series is made up entirely of his own previously unreleased productions, most of which were made in cahoots with friends and other like-minded artists. Because of this, the German label has decided to release two extensive vinyl samplers featuring the cream of these cuts. The Belgian indie-dance stalwart is in fine form throughout the first of these, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the new wave-tinged, cosmic-minded Shubostar hook-up 'Across The Universe', Zombies In Miami-sporting nu-disco throb-job 'Smooth Monday', breakbeat-driven neo-rave anthem 'All Day Every Day' and the EP-closing 'Away', where doP member Vandesande helps Biesmans channel the spirit of Vangelis' much-loved Bladerunner soundtrack.

Moqueca (4:04)
Moqueca (instrumental) (3:55)
Review: Captain Planet is a globe trotting DJ and producer who mixes up worldly roots music with his own fresh take on hip-hop and dancehall. For this one he joined up with Zuzuka Poderosa & Raphael Futura for a brilliant Brazilian disco and funk song that harks back to the 70s and 80s with influences like Tim Maia, Sandra Da Sa & Gilberto Gil. 'Moqueca' though also has some nice dance floor weight to it as well as the richly tropical percussion, steamy horns and seductive chords. On the flip is an instrumental and the good news is this is a taster of a full album to come.

Ejeca - "Tetra"
Chamboche - "Mi Senti"
Zoo Look - "Stab Game"
Mann Made Music - "I Choose You Hutch"
Review: Brand spanking new UK label Tusk Wax debuts with a limited vinyl-only four track sampler. There's a scarcity of information around on the new imprint other than that they are "disco inclined" and boast a roster full of exciting new talent. "Tetra" from Ejeca is a cosmic house/disco driven track with vocal riff, disco sirens and a luscious meandering lower end. "Mi Senti" is up next from Nottingham's finest and Juno Plus one to watch alumni Chamboche; warm, percussive and with a piercing arp'd synth it's the definite floor shaker of the bunch. On the flip, Zoo Look's deep and housey "Stab Game" glides through heavenly reverbed chords and a subtle drum platform. Finally, "I Choose You Hutch" by Mann Made Music is dubby, low slung and divine with a prowling bass, ascending drive and old school vibes.

Mango Shake Part 1 (B-STOCK)
Cat: MNGVNL 001 (B-STOCK). Rel: 01 Jan 90
Etur Usheo - "Wo Ye Wa (Na Na)"
Whatever Charles - "African Dialects"
Ziggy Phunk - "Blues Grinder"
So.undso - "Ultrashake"
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

Mango Sounds, a disco edits and disco-house imprint with a bulging, digital-only catalogue to its name, has finally decided to release a record. Predictably, there's plenty to savour on the Russian label's first wax outing. Etur Usheo gets proceedings under way in fine fashion with 'Wo Ye Wa (Na Na)', a fine fusion of sparkling nu-disco electronics, driving disco bass and African instrumentation/vocals, before Whatever Charles delivers a lolloping, house style re-rub of a funk-fuelled Afro-disco treat ('African Dialects'). Experienced re-editor and remixer Ziggy Phunk steals the show with vibraphone-laden, proto-house treat 'Blues Grinder', while So.undso's 'Ultrashake' is a celebratory disco-house stomper with added synth squelch.

Mangwana
Chiiko
Mangwana (A Vision Of Panorama remix)
Mangwana (Paradise 89 dub)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Faze Action return with a brand new 12", teaming up with Zimbabwean born Zeke Manyika to create "Mangwana". Sung in Zeke's native Shona, and taking influences from Mory Kante, South African Kwaito to early house, Faze Action manage to create a record that harks back yet still has a modern and contemporary feel and is set to be the soundtrack to countless festivals and outdoor parties this summer.

The title track is followed by the stunning "Chiiko", featuring Zeke's vocals enriched by Rob's 'cello's with African rhythms floating you away to another tropical world. A Vision of Panorama turns up the dial with a stunning mix on the flip side. A new bass line adds to some quality keyboard work. Finally the brothers deliver are more stripped out dub "Paradise '89 Mix" tailored for the peak time.

Sununguka (feat Alan Dixon remix)
Cat: FAR 042. Rel: 20 Apr 20
Sununguka (12" version) (5:58)
Rwendo (5:12)
Sununguka (Alan Dixon Italo mix) (7:27)
Sununguka (Special extended dub mix) (5:43)
Review: Faze Action have been on a roll with their collaborative project with Zeke Manyika, which first started up in 2016 and now reaches its fourth installment with the infectiously uplifting "Sununguka". In its original form the Afro-house burner artfully blends Manyika's Zimbabwean roots with Faze Action's knack for '80s tinged proto-house. "Rwendo" is a more laid back affair compared to the lead track, but it's no less effervescent thanks to Manyika's vocals. On the B side, Alan Dixon drops a feisty Italo version of "Sununguka" that sounds purpose built for spine-tingling sundown moments, while there's also a pumped up "Special Extended Dub" version to appeal to headsy DJs looking to keep the floor running at full tilt.

Rugare (5:38)
Maswera (instrumental mix) (6:10)
Review: Faze Action's Afro series hits a fourth and final volume with Zeke Manyika and Faze Action themselves at the helm of two new singles. The vibes on this one take their cues from Afro Latin and Balearic worlds with opener 'Maswera' bringing nice open-air festival sounds, rich horn work and expressive drum funk. Manyika's chants are the icing on the cake for this one. Then comes a nice dubbed-out remix of 'Rugare' by Faze Action with lively disco drums and loose-limbed percussion. The original on the flip is a more straight-up and dazzling disco cut while a paired back instrumental of 'Maswera' closes things down in style. Timeless Afro bombs for sure.

Kubatana (5:25)
Hapana (4:19)
Kubatana (Rudy Midnight Machine mix) (6:12)
Kubatana (Paradise dub) (5:26)
Review: Faze Action last teamed up with Zeke Manyika, formerly of 80s funksters Orange Juice, for the effervescent "Mangwana" back in 2016. Now they're back in collaboration for more classically rooted house music with a deeply infectious African twist. "Kubatana" is punchy where it counts, but it's a light and springy proto house burner first and foremost, with Manyika's vocal sounding as smooth as silk in the middle of the mix. "Hapana" is equally rich in musicality and personality, albeit on a more simmering, meditative tip. On the B side, "Kubatana" gets reworked by Rudy Midnight Machine and Paradise, who turn in distinct versions without losing the overall 80s aesthetic that powers the release.

C Da Afro - "Time To Move" (6:03)
Ziggy Phunk - "Space Ranger" (6:44)
Alexny - "Umbele" (6:48)
Review: The See-Saw label calls up a hit list of disco edit dynamos to bring a little party rocking magic to their latest 12", leading in with the looped up funk of Hotmood. 'Seductive Look' is the perfect insistent groove to get lost in, which contrasts with the bold and feisty 'Time To Move' by C Da Afro. Keeping things mixed up on the B side, Ziggy Phunk brings something special in the pattering, bongo-laden roller 'Space Ranger'. Alexny rounds things off with the low slung thwack and transcendent sax of 'Umbele', a track humming with the energy of Afrobeat at its source.

Review: Reel People Music's vinyl sampler series is back with a third offering, this time once again bringing together a fine crew of artists on lovely turquoise vinyl. Up first is a wonderful remix by Opolopo of Adina Howard that brings jazzy keys and heavy deep house drums, then Rocco Rodamaal keeps it deep with a low slung groove topped with diva vocals full of soul. The Reel People vocal mix of Zo! is another heart-swelling and soul-drenched deep house roller with lavish synth work and last of all, Michael Gray closes out with a slinky number defined by funky bass licks and classy vocals.

Zmatsutsi - "Wet Grout" (Joe dub) (7:48)
Tony Pineman - "Kaneda" (5:00)
Tross - "Colonization" (6:02)
Review: The Space Ritual label launched last autumn with an intriguing mini-album from Oddnip, AKA experienced producers Luv Jam and In Fields. Here the imprint changes tack, serving up a quartet of tasty tracks from new and little-known artists. Kalisdassa steps up first with the psychedelic, shoegaze-goes-Balearic chug of "KR1", before Joe delivers a deep space dub of Zmatusi's "Wet Grout", where gnarly guitar solos trade blows with kalimba style melodies, sparse electronic beats and fuzzy, analogue bass. There's more heat to be found on the flip, first from Tony Pineman (the tropical dub disco hum of "Kaneda"), and lastly Tross, whose "Colonization" somehow joins the dots between heavy Afro-dub, deep electronica and post-punk experimentation.

Kyoto - "Venetian Blinds" (4:34)
Zoe Sinatra - "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes" (4:12)
Review: The Belgian crate diggers behind the STROOM label have dug up more overlooked gold here, bringing together two disparate but equally impressive tracks. On the A-side you'll find Kyoto's 1984 single "Venetian Blinds", a curious but hugely enjoyable chunk of bustling, off-kilter synth-pop rich in crunchy machine drums, undulating bass, Prince style guitars and stylish female vocals. Over on the flip it's all about Zoe Sinatra's 1990 B-side "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes". This semi slow-motion affair wraps half-whispered, half-sung bi-lingual vocals and alien synthesizer melodies around a rubbery but chugging electronic groove.

Storken & Hammer - "Marabou" (5:54)

Senor Chugger & Count Van Delicious - "Mickeys Vegan Fillet" (5:55)
Review: Numbers hold the key to unlock the universe. So, a six-pack can either consist of six bottles of beer, very well developed stomach muscles or in our case: a string of smash hits. To take it even further, it's exactly six tracks for the sixth part of the VA-series that is One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer. Hit men include friends new and old: Llewellyn, Stereocalypse, Zillas On Acid, Storken & Hammer, Ede, SeNor Chugger & Count Van Delicious. The pace is cool and hot at the same time. Rave signals by Ede foil the nouveau disco by Stereocalypse or Storken & Hammer, Llewellyn does a classic house piano hop, Zilles On Acid deliver mid-tempo acid, and last, but not least, SeNor Chugger & Count Van Delicious strike a delicious pose.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Funkyjaws Music is back to make your body move with the latest instalment in its ongoing edit series, Let's Dance, this time with a sixth sizzling volume. Monsieur Van Pratt's loose and languid 'Besame' opens up with some gorgeous strings and funky guitar licks then Kiko Navarro brings a rich Afro flavour with the shuffling and percussive rhythms of 'Bosinga'. Review: The latest must-have missive from Naples' Early Sounds collective comes courtesy of founding member Pellegrino S. Snichelotto and his collaborative studio project Zodyaco. This time round keyboard player and fellow producer Daryo Bass joins him in the studio for a sun-kissed skip through hybrid jazz-funk/disco pastures. The A-side "Damecuta Version" of "Caucciu" is the kind of rich and opulent Balearic disco we dig, with the pair regularly flitting between dancefloor jazz-funk and arpeggio-driven, Italo-disco type sounds. The flipside "Migliera Version" is an altogether looser and more loved-up affair that sounds like a jam session between Tullio Di Piscopo and Pat Metheny.

Review: Pellegrino and Zodiac's 'Malia' bills itself as a 7" that serves as "a spell, a journey through the wonder of life, in search of the Mediterranean essence." For our money, it finds that essence and serves it up in musical form here across a brace of gloriously escapist cuts. 'Malia' is a disco cut with sunny synths and loose-limbed rhythms that draw on jazz-funk and Balearic tropes. It has a distinctly Italo twist that cannot fail to get you going. 'Malia Carribean Escapade' is even more exotic with its more cosmic array of synth leads and lively vocals full of Latin passion and flair.

The super strong Various Artists collection kicks off with the funky bass riffs of 'In Motion' from Phazed Groove, who ride the riffs and fluttering flute lines to the cosmos and back again. Ziggy Phunk gets more raw and punchy with a freewheeling disco house cut that will shake your booty loose and on the backside are two more timeless tracks: 'Funky Tranky' has lush trumpets reaching for the skies and 'Calabao' brings a real Latin vibe and flailing percussive energy.

Review: If you're looking for a great selection of house and disco club cuts, you can't beat Z Records "Attack The Dancefloor" Series. The latest volume begins with the revivalist disco brilliance of label founder Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro's remix of Delia Renee's "You're Gonna Want Me Back", before moving on to the slightly more house-centric modern disco vibes of Dr Packer's superb revision of vintage Dave Lee production (as Foreal People) "Shake". Over on side B, Grant Nelson offers up a filter-sporting disco-house revision of Z Factor classic "Gotta Keep Pushin", before Lee dons the Joey Negro alias one more time to wrap ear-catching church organ solos around a gospel-influenced house groove on an excellent remix of Four80East and CeCe Peniston's "Are You Ready?".

Sirhan - "Gong Gong" (5:33)
Fixed Angles - "Anikana" (5:57)
Panama Cardoon - "Ibara" (7:30)
Ziggy Phunk - "Ukudansa" (5:58)
Review: The first record from Athens-based label Bonfido Disques drew plenty of love thanks to its canny spread of globally-minded edits and reworks, not least from Sirhan's simply delightful flute flex. The good news is the same producer leads the charge on this second round with an Afrobeat-laced banger that keeps the energy and spirit of the musical alive. Fixed Angles turns up the heat with a disco/Chicago house stomp, thumping away underneath 'Anikana', while Panama Cardoon keeps the tempo feisty and the vibes summery on 'Ibara'. Ziggy Phunk finishes the record off with the snappy, Shangaan-licked 'Ukudansa'.

Practice What You Preach (Zernell & Rahaan edit)
Bump & Hustle Music (Zernell & Rahaan edit)
Review: The Luv N' Haight Edits series launched in style earlier this year, enlisting Nico Jaar and 78 Edits to rework two Mike James Kirkland classics to tie in with the annual Record Store Day festivities. This second volume sees Chicago duo Rahaan and Zernell tackle music from Tommy Stewart's self titled 1976 album, recently reissued by the Ubiquity sub label. If you're not familiar with Stewart's work then you need to check that LP, one of the defining releases of the pre-disco era and two of its highlights are given respectful touchdowns on this clear 12". There's an obvious deftness to the way Rahaan and Zernell loop up the intro bars of "Practice What You Preach" before dropping in those killer strings and then launching into the song itself, while the dirty funk of "Bump & Hustle Music" is only made more apparent by the duo's subtle arrangements. Big 12" for the discotheques!

One Swallow Doesn't Make A Summer: Part 1
Storken - "Lille Vals" (6:22)
Alan Dixon - "Ambient Braindisk" (Drums mix) (5:49)
Zombies In Miami - "Panoramica" (6:36)
Hokaiido - "Talisman" (6:35)
Review: Bizarrely, Running Back boss Gerd Janson describes this multi-artist EP as "a sampler for a hypothetical mixtape". Perhaps he should make that imaginary mix a reality, because all four cuts are quality. Check first the throbbing and pulsating brilliance of Storken's "Lille Vals", which sounds like an Italo-disco obsessive's take on Bobby Orlando's mid-1980s work (with a little NYC freestyle thrown in) before donning your extra-special dancing shoes to shuffle along to Alan Dixon's new dancefloor "Drums Mix" of his synthesizer soundscape "Ambient Braindisk". Zombies In Miami deliver the goods on bleeping, synth-laden nu-disco throb-job "Panoramica", while Hokaiido's "Talisman" offers the perfect combination of delay-laden proto-house drums on steroids, bold freestyle bass and cheery synthesizer melodies.
