The Passenger EP
Cat: 3024 OMM1. Rel: 04 Feb 21
Tracksuit Dub (4:41)
Passenger (4:07)
Shapes (4:48)
Skimming (4:54)
Review: Dutch rhythm innovator Martyn returns to his own well regarded 3024 label for a collaborative EP with Om Unit that explores plenty of common ground as well as fresh new territory. Om Unit's hometown of Bristol is said to have inspired the sound which take sin tech step, dub infused techno swaggering and 140bpm steppers that any warm blooded human couldn't possible ignore. 'Tracksuit Dub' is as cool and casual as the title suggests, 'Passenger' is a hard hitting, darker more high pressure banger and 'Shapes' gets you on your toes with is prickly beats while 'Skimming' closes at futuristic hyper-speed.

Misfit - "Katana" (5:05)
Oxossi - "Frantic" (6:33)
Review: Sound as a well-rounded pound; two more talented sub craftsmen step up to this consistently sold out vinyl series. Brighton's Misfit takes the lead with a delicious doom stomper, all tense strings and ploughman bass. He's complemented by Oxossi on the B who goes organic with a warm and woozy bass cascade that's drench in gently freefalling instrumentation. Like every Well Rounded release so far, the beauty here is how well the artists complement each other and create such a nice contrast. True scale and scope. Well Rounded by name...

NDread - "Grandeur"
Demon & Chapta - "Fate"
Demon & Occult - "Motive"
Review: Four of MUD's brightest darkstars collide right here for an EP that has no delusions of "Grandeur" whatsoever. NDread ignites this slow-burning fire with a slinky, slo-mo halfstepper that's peppered with a beefy bass melody that never loses paces. Demon & Chapta's "Fate" follows. Spitting a spikier riddim, there's a playful balance of deep and pure darkness thanks to echoing amens on the fills and some ace warp-factor fine-tuning to the bass. Demon then teams up with Occult for the final heaving hurrah "Motive". Wafting with dreamy synth washes, we're thrown deep into a metallic sea of alien bass groans, complete with mild eastern twangs. Yet another consistent package from dubstep's deepest quarters.

Review: San Diego's vinyl-only bass purveyors Banana Stand Sound return with one of their most all-encompassing EPs to date. Full spectrum services on offer: OH91 sets the tone with a smouldering sub sesh on "Meditation", Nights & Aerotonin fire up the grime hole with the aggy, cutty "Jazz Licks" and TryTryDieDown lets loose on a sharply edited juke-style jam "Boo". Denver's Crix Saiz finishes with a deep throaty one-fingered salute. Genuinely unique.

Cat: MEDI 049. Rel: 20 Jul 11
Zebulon
Hammerhand (feat Mowgli)
Review: The mysterious Old Apparatus' debut release on Mala's Deep Medi was filled with almost exactly the kinds of sounds you would expect from their name; grainy, creaking dubstep that betrayed its modernity with such aged sounds. Their second record, Zebulon, has a similarly antiquated feel to it, but the addition of vocals has given the whole thing a more human feel. A-Side "Zebulon" is led by a female vocal that has a folk ballad quality to it, giving the whole thing a uniquely creepy pastoral flavour, whilst the clattering, smoky percussion gives a nice mechanical contrast. "Hammerhand" features MC Mowgli on vocal duties, with his measured aggression working nicely against the track's stretched out string melody. Old Apparatus do not disappoint with this second release; there are few producers currently producing such classic dubstep sounds with such an imaginatively dark palette.

Octafish
Review: Harem is the fourth release for Old Apparatus on their own Sullen Tone imprint, and the third to come from an individual member of the collective. This time it's the turn of Harem, who also lends their name to the release and provides one of the label's most atmospheric releases to date. "Sunday Service" places spectral female vocals in a desolate soundscape, while "Mernom" continues the funereal atmospherics with lumbering beats and acoustic instrumentation placed within a vast echo chamber. "Dourado" offers the most propulsive cut of the EP, with galloping drums and deep subs providing a steampunk take on classic dubstep, leaving "Octafish" to round off another superlative EP with a brooding combination of scorched strings and distant, simmering percussion.

Review: Jim Coles aka OM Unit deserves no introduction, and his productions have been some of the finest in the UK over the last five years. Aside from being a badman and jumping from Metalheadz to Exit, OM Unit also likes to dabble in edits (remember those killer Phillip D. Kick refixes?) and his third batch of them is out through Cosmic Bridge. "Testimony" can only be described as a neo soul ballad, a gorgeous sort of gospel song backed by a steady progression of fast percussion and deep subbass, while "Soil" is a pure instrumental, a deep and pensive jam with shuffling drums and sensual melodies.

Review: All that glitters is not gold... Unless it's Ome's 'Made Of Gold' on burgeoning LA 140 imprint For The Heads, then it's pure 24 karat. Precious in every sense (it's even limited to 300 copies), Ome lays down soundsystem alchemy across the spectrum. 'Made Of Gold' lights the furnace with ominous fury, 'DD' takes us deep underground to mine for the most cosmic minerals while 'Jurassic' melts everything down into a primordial low-end lava. Finally 'Waan' brings us back to the future with its slippery technoid bass dynamic. Good as gold.

Sex Sells (My Nu Leng)
Review: The Spam Chop EP on Mimm Recordings was an early 2012 highlight in the Juno office and the Nottingham based label returns with more genre defying material, this time from Bristolian producer Ooko. No stranger to Mimm, having contributed a track to the label's free compilation from last year, Ooko truly delivers on his cheekily titled full debut Sex Sells. Lead track "Downtown" sets the tone, chopping recycled jungle breaks up to fit a pitched down rhythmic swing that is ever present whilst the titular vocal loop and pressurised bass shift back and forth in stereo focus. On the flip the title track comes across as a more viscous slant on the current house vogue in Bristol, with the low end seemingly so thick it's stopping the drums from attaining their groove. Watch out for the fizzing synth line which belatedly arrives to crank up the heat, whilst fellow Bristolians My Nu Leng do a splendid job in shifting the track into broken techno territory. Don't know what you call it but this is good!

And this reissue is a kindly reminder of their consistency and future-focused nature. Originally released in the summer 2020, it's now rebooted on lush yellow vinyl and, from the stunning Indian strings on the skin-scorching opening title track to the last rippling bleep from the finale track 'Renegade', the sounds remain as ahead of their time.

Wet Look
Review: It's almost five years since the immense Hyph Mngo announced the talents of Joy Orbison to the world and a lot has changed in this time - not least the musical direction of Scuba's Hotflush label. One of several early Hotflush releases that have been granted a timely repress, the first thing that hits you listening back to "Hyph Mngo" is 'did it ever get revealed how to pronounce it?' We jest, actually it's amazing how powerful a production it still is, and arguably one of the tracks that helped bring about the shift from traditional dubstep to what many now refer to as UK BASS. B Side "Wet Look" can still cause a bit of dancefloor commotion too, you know! A must for those that never got this 12" first time round.

The Past Is A Dream (5:03)
Review: Hard Wax's resident dub and bass music expert is back on Version with the For The Head EP. Appearing on the A side, this track is a deep, roaring and experimental take on the dubstep sound that you've come to expect by now from this master producer, plus it packs a serious low end punch beneath all its delay drenched aesthetic. On the flip, we've got "The Past Is A Dream" a much darker and heaving affair with rolling bass and hissing rhythms that fight for space between a furious wall of reverberated white noise.

Review: We've been waiting a long time on this one. First spotted on Loefah's Rinse show well over a year ago, the deep spacious dyanmics and pensive flow of "Production House" owe more to authentic dub than any modern genre. So crisp, restrained and detailed with intricate flourishes and dynamics, it was tailor made for vinyl. "Fabrik" is more of a modern dance twist up with a stately tech 4/4 and some superbly manipulated bass textures. Minimalism is such a dark art to master... Orson definitely has the secret.

Review: Parisian producer Ourman has been touted as one to watch many times over the last few years, with plaudits arriving for his numerous low-key, largely digital-only releases. According to our research, this outing on White Peach is his first vinyl missive - something of a landmark for the up-and-coming Frenchman. There's much to admire throughout, with Ourman combining warm, deep, sometimes punishing sub-bass and crunchy post-dubstep drum rhythms with a variety of breezy, ear-pleasing melodies and instrumental flourishes. The best of the bunch is probably the exotic title track, 'Windy', which rushes along at a notable pace and boasts what sounds like Amazonian instrumentation (but most likely isn't), though the sparkling and deep 'Rub A Thug' and skittish 'Polarised' are also top-notch.

Review: Hands up - this is our first brush with French artists Ourman, but we're already hooked. He has a clear love of UK sounds - dubstep, bass, broken beat - as they are the cornerstones of this new EP on UK label White Peach. He serves them all up with a deftness of melodic touch and plenty of cosmic aesthetics. 'Zengo' starts with screwing bass and sunny acoustic strings over a lurching beat, then 'Second Thoughts' is another hefty low end wobbler but with introspective melodies and bright flashes of colour. "Mindless Mills' is a darker UK stepper and 'Pocket Fruit' is the wispy, whimsical closer that will fit your heart with warmth and hope. A standout EP from a name we shall be keeping an eye on.

This one has it all, from grime-tinged production to deep bass, edgy stabs to lush violins, all of which add up to cinematic tracks that push and pull you in many different directions at once. 'Sweat' sounds like if Wu Tang made dirty dubstep, 'Magdalena' is a percussive and tropical track from the depths of a South American jungle and 'Morbid Impulses' is pure dystopian wobbler. 'Sosa' closes out with gorgeous flute leads taking you down a deep dark path of mystery.

Review: Brazilian dubstep in all its hot-blooded glory; Oxossi has delivered an incredible package right here... "Rollers" packs a big bad punch in its swagger before dropping into the starkest, trippiest piano breakdown you've ever heard. "6 Under" flips our focus to the beats as we swathe through a swampy arrangement of far-out noises and off-beat rhythms. "Kadian Dub" is the real screwface of the set with its higher-end riff (think Coki's "Don't Get It Twisted"). Finally we hit the soft organ skanks of "Couch Dub" for those moments when the dance needs just a touch more light. Powerful.

This is the first of a series of EPs, it's focussed on the deepest tendrils of the label and it's just a sliver of the 29-track action. Sepia opens with a beautiful, heart-heaving lament "Voodoo" before Taiko lures us into the graveyard for some shadowy mischief on "Rise" before Oxossi gets aggy on the pipes and harmonica with "No War". Finally we see the return of Truth and Youngsta's Shadow People project as Lelijveld's hazy tones brings us to a cosy close on "Painted Red". Precision emotional sonics.

This surprise sequel more than lives up to the high bar set by its predecessor, with the Bristol-based producer subtly expanding the project's boundaries (see the borderline Balearic brilliance of 'Camo') while delivering more fusions of ambient techno, acid and digi-dub. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the slow-motion strut of 'Strange Brew', the intergalactic squelch of 'Pursuit', the warming loveliness of 'To The River' and the borderline tropical melodiousness of 'Liberation'.

Review: Some three years after he emerged in the misty heights (or depths) of Witch House's short lived notoriety, the amusingly spectral named oOoOO delivers his debut album Without Your Love. Evidently no longer aligned with the Tri Angle aesthetic, this eleven track set comes via the Nihgt Feelings label the San Franciscan producer runs with a "couple of local gravediggers" and expands on the approach shown on his two EPs for Robin Carolan's label. No longer called Witch House, oOoOO is now embraced as the point where post modern R&B song writing meets queasy, spacious musical arrangements, so expect auto tuned vocals floating over ethereal ivory blessed soundscapes and crust laden MPC beats. The stuttering detuned Atlanta hip hop of "The South" and the suite of Burial-esque cuts that follow are standout tracks.
