Review: British crime television series Sherlock has proved hugely popular in recent years. The latest adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings have also been hugely enhanced by the soundtrack. That score has been composed by David Arnold and Michael Price, and has won the pair numerous awards including a 2014 EMMY as well as two further nominations for an EMMY and a BAFTA nomination. Their contribution to Sherlock is immeasurable as exemplified by this soundtrack which is thrilling and sinister, playful and suspenseful in equal measure. The music from all three of the first series is captured here on this limited blue vinyl.

Review: Celebrated English composer Gavin Bryars has his 80th birthday marked by the release of the magnificent In LA, an all-new album on the Alga Marghen label. The album is the result of a collaboration between Bryars and Italian visual artist Massimo Bartolini. It is music played pipe organ bars, suspended from the ceiling at the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art in Prato, Italy. It is an experimental concept that results in absorbing ambient works that very much capture the energy, essence and architecture of the spaces. It's a live, living, real time adventure full of evocative imagery and sombre moods.

The lead single, 'Things Will Fall Apart,' highlights Cole's feather-light vocals over an exciting orchestration of funk percussion, strings, horns and barbershop backup vocals. Recorded during live performances, Nothing captures the energy and emotion of Cole's multi-date sold-out European tour with the Metropole Orkest. Review: Olof Dreijer and Mt. Sims combine their singular sonic minds for Souvenir, an intense and experimental five-track album via Rabid Records. It is centered around the lush harmonic sounds of the steel drum and comes years after the pair first worked together with Planningtorock on the Tomorrow, In A Year album. This project was commissioned by the SFOTE organisation from Trinidad/New York who asked them to make use of a drum made by Trinidad-based legend Ellie Mannette. Over ten years they have developed their own musical language from the drum, always remaining conscious of its colonial history and how it has been so often stereotyped in the West. It is fair to say what they do with it is truly original.

Review: GNOD, the ever-evolving psychedelic noise-rock collective, returns with Inner Fucking Peace, a transformative collaboration with Portuguese vocalist MC Sissi. It is a masterful tribute done with sheer class and beautifully orchestrated collaboration.

Review: The 1968 film 'Gangsters 70', also known as 'Days Of Fire', is a lesser-known classic Italian crime thriller directed by Mino Guerrini. Something of a lost relic in the genre, we're surprised that it's taken this long for the soundtrack, composed by Egisto Macchi, to be reissued alone for the first time here. The stylistic fusion of free improvisation, abstract electronic ornaments and jazz lends well to the film's noir, thrill-of-the-chase overtones, and will surely be a favourite of just about any and every lover of free, abstract musics. The soundtrack also tapers off into horrific, screechy directions, reflecting the ever-unfurlingly paranoid mood of the flick.

Review: Few conductors have been as closely associated with the works of Gustav Mahler as Sir Simon Rattle, Here, the British maestro leads the world famous Berliner Philharmoniker in a rendition of Symphony 5, which itself is one of the most renowned pieces in Mahler's oeuvre. The first instrumental he composed since his Symphony No. 1, it's a powerful audio odyssey here performed flawlessly for Rattle's first ever concert as principal conductor of Berlin's prestigious orchestra. Comprising five movements, each packs its own unique personality. At times lighter than air, in other moments packing a subdued depth, pomp and pageantry, and epic drama ('Trauermarsch. In Gemessenen Schritt. Streng. Wie Ein Kondukt'), you could argue this showcases the breadth of classical in one stunning experience, but that might be stating the obvious.

Review: Kali Malone's The Sacrificial Code stands as a defining work of 21st Century minimalism, shaped by years of intensive study. Originally released in 2019, the album emerged from her time at Stockholm's Royal College of Music, where she explored sound, space, and alternate tuning systems under the guidance of organ tuner Jan Borjeson. Stripping composition down to its starkest form, she embraced canons and slow-moving harmonic shifts, slowly but surely stepping into a sound emphasising monumentality. Now, six years later, The Sacrificial Code is reissued via Ideologic Organ, featuring a new 2023 recording of the title track on a 16th-century organ. Malone's self-taught recording techniques bring out the instrument's spirant resonance, creating a time-dilating sound. Less mournful, more tranquil, the new version mirrors the concurrent transformations of music and listeners in step, over time.

Review: While legendary composer and jazz soloist Harry Manfredini has handled the scores to the vast majority of entries into the Friday the 13th horror franchise, it would be the ironically titled Part VII: The New Blood that would see producer Fred Mollin brought in to provide unique cues to counterweight Manfredini's compositions. With only Mollin returning to score the following eighth instalment, this score provides the only torch passing intersection between the two uniquely brilliant composers, while this pressing lands on "psychokinetik splatter", echoing the film's plot of a young telekinetic girl going to war with the hockeymasked Jason (for those not up on their Camp Crystal Lake lore).

Review: Soundtrack heavyweight Clint Mansell was the perfect choice to score 2009 film Moon, in which Sam Rockwell goes through a brilliantly off-beat adventure while working a solo stint on a base on the dark side of our nearest celestial object. It's an artful, subtly eerie film with a score to match, and Mansell perfectly conveys the isolation of Rockwell's character while evoking the sense of wonder a sci-fi film demands.
