Review: Sheffield-based experimental label Another Timbre is reissuing some of their most sought-after CDs, starting with this collaboration between Berlin-based Japanese composer and reeds player Michiko Ogawa and cellist, composer and noted classical-electronic fusionist Lucy Railton. Designed as an exercise in creating musical magic using just three musical elements - cello, organ and sho (a Japanese reed instrument) - Fragments of Reincarnation is an evocative, atmospheric and at times hypnotic piece that sits somewhere between cutting-edge modern classical, ambient and immersive sound design. The interplay between the cello and sho, gently dancing atop a bed of sustained organ chords, is particularly impressive.

Review: Den Helder is the northernmost city in Holland, is surrounded by water and borders the North Sea. With a military history dating back to the 16th century, it is also the most bombed city in the Netherlands and was nearly destroyed during World War II. The Third of May was written and recorded in 2020 over six days in an old pumping station located in the dunes of Huisduinen near Den Helder. The story behind the album is set in this historic city, weaving its tumultuous past into a vivid, imagined narrative inspired by the area's rich and tragic history. It's as much of an emotional rollercoaster as you would expect given the concept.

Review: Originally released back in 2015, Umor Rex are reissuing Kara-Lis Coverdale and LXV's stunning ambient excursion Sirens. Their combined sound is a dense and complex one, moving like a cohesive whole but defined by infinitesimal details and qualities. From the broad sweeps of drone to the stuttering shards of processed voice, intricate orchestrations to glassy found sounds, Sirens is like being enveloped by mist and then surprised by the objects which you encounter while your senses are temporarily stunted. It's a highly prized piece of modern minimal music, and this new pressing isn't likely to hang around for long.

Review: Prolific collaborator Lawrence English links up with accomplished electro-acoustic virtuoso Lea Bertucci on this new album for American Dreams. Bertucci's primary focus as a player is on alto sax and clarinet, but in the context of this record her playing folds into the quivering, slow-shifting plates of sound. It's simultaneously steely and synthetic, and yet charged with an ancient, elemental spirit which will keep you on tenterhooks throughout. It's certainly not a one-dimensional kind of ambience but a monolithic, complicated thing that will hold you attention with ease. Don't miss out on the stunning sleeve photography either, which is worth the price of admission alone.

Review: Whitney Johnson and Lia Kohl's debut album has evolved over several years. Its roots lay in their shared practice of free improvisation on viola and cello and flourished into a unique neophonic orchestral expression. That makes For Translucence both stimulating and soothing - a very alive form of musical meditation where layers of acoustic strings, wispy synths, evocative field recordings and radio and sine waves intertwine and grow while mesmerising you even more. Though always moving and shapeshifting the effect is cathartic as a fine balance is struck between experimentation and cohesion and the organic and the electronic.

Review: Blurring the boundary between music and meditation, La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's 31 VII 69 10:26-10:49 PM/23 VIII 64 2:50:45-3:11 AM: The Volga Delta is not only a bold deviator when it comes to the usually rather conservative practice of album-naming, but it's also a cherished classic in early drone music. They're among the genre's first ever pioneers, with this album preceding the moment when metalheads clocked onto drone and fused it with rock. Instead, this was music intended for New York-backstreet art shows and sculpture fairs, in which listeners were invited to sit and listen for days at a time. A radical exercise in endurance, it made Young and Zazeela key figures in the minimalist movement of the 1960s-70s, and was noted for its unique fusion of indian ragas with pure sine tones.

Review: An overview of Laraaji's earliest works, Glimpses of Infinity gathers selections from his 1978 debut Celestial Vibration, and six additional studio sessions from the era. This is a condensed version of the 2023's sold out 4xLP Boxset, perhaps among which the most notable track has been 'Segue To Infinity', the infamous 20-minute pan-piper (we intend the double meaning of the term 'pan', as its many wind instruments stretch out in a beautifully prostrated fashion, extending over both the entire stereo field and the entire length of the song). And though Laraaji's many multi-instrumental amusements are ambitious, the record never falls afoul of grandiosity or dilettantism, retaining that hard-to-achieve mix of humility and commitment to the sound, all throughout; our favourite 'glimpse' is the peek into his 'Koto' session, for which the infamous Japanese string instrument is put to work with total dexterity. Full of discovery and wonderment, Glimpses of Infinity is a miraculous chronicle of new age's most fabled artist.

Review: The master and his student - not that we're trying to label Kramer as a novice producer given he could easily school even some of the most accomplished studio hands. Nevertheless, Laraaji is considered one of the true godfathers of ambient, having been there way, way back in the early 1980s, releasing on Brian Eno's Day of Radiance imprint and gracing us with an inordinately good back catalogue since then. The point being that Kramer, like almost everyone stepping into this space in the past 40 years, has certainly learnt something from that living legend. At least some of that is put to excellent use on this collaborative joy, which uses three distinct movements to draw us deep into a simple yet compelling sonic odyssey.

Review: Mary Lattimore's last album Silver Ladders is still a firm favourite here at Juno HQ, two years on from its release. To keep us fans sated the Los Angeles-based harpist is now back with a counterpart release, Collected Pieces: 2015-2020, which brings together some of her best bits from that five year period. It is a limited edition record that also includes some new and unreleased bits, singles that have only been on Bandcamp before now and some other obscurities from 2017's sister LP, Collected Pieces. It is a heavenly selection with contact mics and pedals the only accompaniment to Lattinmore's Lyon and Healy Concert Grand Harp.

Review: Mary Lattimore's standing as one of the foremost harpists in active service is without doubt at this stage, but even by her considerable reputation this record is a standout moment in a glittering career. Over the course of two years, the dedicated improviser committed herself to focused sessions and collaborated with an impressive cast of characters from The Cure's Lol Tolhurst to Slowdive's Rachel Goswell. The over-arching theme is one of the inescapable nature of change, as crystallised in the crumbling Croatian hotel Lattimore references in the album title. It goes without saying the musical results are achingly beautiful, nuanced and fathoms deep.
