Review: Studio Ghibli is an animation studio in Japan that has put out some of the genre's greatest movies. It also releases the soundtracks which are just as exceptional on vinyl, as is the case here with another classic from the one and only composer Joe Hisaishi, who is behind most of them. Castle In The Sky was released in 1986 and tells the story of an airship carrying orphaned girl Sheeta that is attacked by a gang who seeks Sheeta's necklace. The drama and emotion of the movie were perfectly captured by this glorious soundtrack which is a perfectly fitting one for what many Japanese people have voted as one of the best-ever anime films.

Review: Joe Hisiashi's original scores for almost every Studio Ghibli anime film are being released on vinyl in quick succession. It should have been taken as a given that the most ubiquitous of them all, Spirited Away, would now land in our mitts. From its emotional piano waltzes to its weighty string passages, it would be difficult to guess that wyvernal dragons, masked spirits and steamroom spider demons exist among the characters of this historic colossus of a film. It goes to show that Hisiashi's fandom is well-deserved, effortlessly showing off his penchant for combining surrealism with melancholy.

Now, Deutsche Grammophon has put together the release of Joe Hisaishi in Vienna, the renowned Japanese composer, conductor, and pianist's second album for the label. This recording follows his successful debut, A Symphonic Celebration - Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki, which was one of 2023's best-selling classical albums. The follow-up features two world premiere recordings in the form of 'Symphony No. 2,' performed with the Wiener Symphoniker, and 'Viola Saga,' featuring soloist Antoine Tamestit.

But while a longstanding reissues campaign of all the original OSTs for Hayao Miyazaki's films is still underway, this brand new LP by the composer for Deutsche Grammophon might catch you off guard, as it did for us. This new LP hears the composer reperform and reinterpret each star theme from most of the set of Ghibli films so far, hearing him work with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London (of all troupes) to produce the best rendition of his compositions yet.

Review: Pirates have always had a pretty rough time in the land of video games. On the face of it, there's so much about bandits-on-the-waves that should work perfectly for a playable adventure. And yet so few have managed to really crack the formula, save for the likes of Assassin's Creed Black Flag and Sid Meier's standard-bearing Pirates. Enter Skull & Bones, a high spec 2024 release which - having reportedly spent the best part of a decade in development hell - really wants to change the sketchy track record. Sadly, it only partly manages it, with reviews pointing to a title that's "almost great", but not really. Nevertheless, the aesthetics and effects have been praised, as has the music. Created by Tom Holkenborg, AKA Junkie XL, while much of it is relatively bombastic classical stuff, there's more than a garnish of experimentalism, ambient and avant garde here, too.

Review: Marc Leclair may have become best known for his Akufen work in the 00s, but his Horror Inc work is surely some of his finest. Taking the slinky micro house he pioneered and turning it to more cinematic purposes, his last album under the name was 2013's incredible Briefly Eternal on Perlon. Now he revives the project with this expansive suite for Ohm Hourani's Anoma label, which is appropriately tipped towards jazzy subtleties within machine music. With each release, Horror Inc becomes a deeper, subtler concern, and so it goes on this record where the springy, swung patterns are offset by half-hidden melodic murmurs and a generous dose of mystery as Leclair takes his conceptual project further into the realms of playfully spooky micro jazz.

Review: Not the first film to be named Babylon and to feature an incredible soundtrack (we'll leave the sleuthing up to you), Justin Hurwitz's soundtrack to Hollywood's latest hedonic product is a perfect match to the movie's 1920s LA setting. Opulence, narcissism and decadence - being a rather fashionable set of subject matters - are among its most pressing themes, and this is most readily portrayed by Hurwitz's liberal use of golden-timbred brasses, big strings, and velvety razzamatazzing claps, on cuts like the aptly-titled 'Champagne' and 'Wild Child'.
