Review: This record comes at a sad time, as Marlena Shaw passed away in January 2024, the New York born soul singer with her unmistakable voice leaving a long list of amazing credits and performances when she departed. This magnificent double 7" focuses on her early years in the late 1960s, work she did on the highly influential Cadet label just before she moved to Blue Note. 'California Soul', 'Liberation Conversation', 'Let's Wade In The Water' and 'Woman Of The Ghetto' are all soul classics by the late songbird, and all gathered togethere here into one unmissable EP.

Review: The bossa nova remake of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' by Studio Rio is a masterful mood lifter. Reissued by Mr Bongo, this track was a game-changer at the Shapes festival, transforming a snowy Alpine setting into a feel-good dancefloor. Originating from Studio Rio's 2014 release The Brazil Connection, the Grammy-winning Berman Brothers collaborated with Brazilian legends like Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal. They used original multitracks to seamlessly blend Withers' soulful vocals with bossa nova rhythms. Joyful horns, a bouncing double bass, and Pretinho da Serrinha's cavaquinho playing create an end-of-night anthem that radiates warmth and positivity.

Review: Recorded following the release of his near-perfect What's Going On Album, with production and arrangement by the Mizell brothers, 'Where Are We Going?' was one of Marvin Gaye's most prophetic singles. Another conscious soul gem - albeit one with a warmer and fuller sound than the distinctively sparse What's Going On album - it was intended to be the centre piece of an album called You're The Man - a set that was subsequently shelved and eventually posthumously released many years later. This Expansion 7" reissue replicates the track listing of the original Motown "45", pairing the brilliant 'Where Are We Going' with the heartfelt and life-affirming celebration of female empowerment that is 'Woman of the World'. An essential reissue!

Review: The Supremes and Magic Disco Machine deliver double the dancefloor delight with 'Bend A Little' on 7" vinyl for the avid soul DJs. Review: France's faves Battle Weapons deliver two heady new edits, only for those ready. On the A comes an ingenious, probably never-done-before, almost laughably why-hasn't-anyone-else-ever-thought-of-this-until-now breakbeat rendition of Peter Bjorn & John's 'The Young Folks'. To be frank, they've not done much besides beef up the backbeat a little, but a simple sprucing up is sometimes all a tune needs. On the flip comes a phattened version of 'Forgot About Dre' mashed up with the Azzido Da Bass UK garage classic 'Dooms Night', also produced to hilariously, surreally arresting effect.

Review: This limited-edition 45 from Aaron Frazer, featuring two standout tracks from his debut album. On side-1, 'Bad News,' delivers a punch with its funky, drum-driven rhythm and a pressing message on urgent issues like climate change and systemic racism. Recorded in Nashville with a stellar lineup, including The Memphis Boysifamed for backing Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklinithis track blends old-school soul with contemporary relevance. On Side-2, 'Done Lyin'' reveals Frazer's emotional depth. With Dan Auerbach's robust production setting the stage, Frazer's heartfelt vocals shine through, creating a soulful resonance that captures both strength and vulnerability. Review: Sade's 1992 album, Love Deluxe, immerses listeners in a luxurious blend of quiet storm, r&b and jazz-pop, enveloping Sade Adu's evocative expressions of desire and heartache. Emerging from the mid-'80s UK jazz-pop scene, Sade perfected a sound that fused jazz, bossa nova, and soul with a modern, streamlined edge. Review: Celestial Echo has got a superb one here for this year's Record Store Day in the form of a reissue of Winfield Parker's superb soul classic, 'I Wanna Be With You.' This gem was first released in Baltimore in 1979 and in the 45 years since it has become one of those many sought-after soul treasures that will often cost four figures now on second hadn't markets. The reissue comes on limited edition 7" and has been meticulously remastered so sounds excellent with its buttery vocals and soothing, hooky melodies.

Review: Gloria Gaynor, renowned for her global hit 'I Will Survive', brings back a forgotten gem in the shape of 'This Love Affair,' re-released by Expansion Records. This soul and disco classic captures pure Philly magic, co-written by Gaynor herself and given that authentic flavour by arrangers Norman Harris and Ron 'Have Mercy' Kersey. Side-1 features the definitive 7" version of 'This Love Affair,' a sought-after rarity since its original 1978 release, with its irresistible groove packed into just 2 minutes and 43 seconds. Side-2 offers the full album version, still beloved by fans. This back-to-back release is great for soul and disco aficionados, showcasing Gaynor's timeless talent and the enduring allure of Philly soul.

Review: There is very little info out there about the Milkcrate Mondays label but we do know that their only other release last year was well hyped and quickly sold out. This second one is likely to follow suit. It comes from Able and is a dusty house cut with an old school feel thanks to the gentle breaks that power it along as a signature smoky soul vocal from Amy Winehouse brings plenty of emotion to a-side cut 'Winehouse Magic'. On the flip is 'Drake Punk' which pairs Daft Punk filter house loops with auto-tuned vocals all sure to bring some fun to the 'floor.

Review: Small Changes is the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to Michael Kiwanuka eponymous third LP, Kiwanuka. Produced alongside soul, hip-hop and pop production legends Danger Mouse and Inflo, Small Changes was recorded between London and LA, with this core triumvirate nonetheless expanding further into an assembly of session musical delegates, including legendary bassist Pino Palladino, as well as Jimmy Jam of the iconic Jam And Lewis songwriting and production duo. A welcome return for one of Britain's most talented songwriters, vocalists, and guitarists.

Review: A 70s funky Northern soul masterpiece by New York-born soul singer Judy Freeman is reissued for the first time on 7", in conjuction with Ted Taylor, who was chronically unappreciated throughout his career. The latter's 'Somebody's Always Trying' is a magnificent uptempo dancefloor-filler with a pounding rhythm, powerful drums, rocking horns and a great frantic, exasperated vocal. The obverse 'Hold On', meanwhile, prefers to rollick in devilish guitar and brass cadences, with Freeman herself urging us to keep on trucking, not least since a new day is dawning.

Review: Miles Away: One, curated by label founder Dom Ore, is a soulful journey spanning continents, eras, and genres. Rooted in soul, this compilation seamlessly blends legendary musical figures with lesser-known gems, creating a cohesive listening experience. Disc one kicks off with Idris Muhammad's spiritual-jazz masterpiece 'I'm A Believer,' leading into modern soul and disco selections that showcase Miles Away's reputation. Highlights include Eugene Smiley's rare crossover-soul track 'Yes It's You' and Solid Gold Revue's infectious dance cut 'She's So Good.' The compilation also features enduring soul funk like 'No Communication' by True Transfusion and gospel-infused sounds like 'Fantasy Ride' by Uneda Dennard. Disc two takes a different turn, offering soundtrack and library music cuts alongside eclectic finds like Laine August's electro-pop gem 'Be My Friend' and Colour's stripped-back street-soul track 'Deeper.' The set concludes with Margaret Singana's timeless cover of Stretch's 'Why Did You Do It.' Painstakingly researched and officially licensed, each track is accompanied by in-depth liner notes, honoring the artists and their music. Miles Away: One is a worthy addition to any collection.

Review: Selector Series strikes gold again with their reissue of The Vibrations' 'Shake It Up,' a modern soul gem that first hit the airwaves in 1974. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, this classic, co-written by Bunny Sigler and arranged by Vince Montana, still electrifies dance floors today. With its swirling strings and unmistakable percussive intro, 'Shake It Up' became a favourite during the mid-80s London warehouse parties and the rare groove scene, solidifying its place on diggers' lists. The flip side, 'Make It Last,' penned by Thom Bell and Linda Creed, offers a mellower vibe, making this 7" a perfect blend of energy and soul.

Review: Crying for Love by Bridge is a highly anticipated 7" release from Izipho Soul. This single highlights two standout tracks from the elusive 1981 album by Paul Tillman Smith's band, originally unreleased and now celebrated as a gem of its genre. On Side-1, 'Crying for Love,' showcases the exceptional production and poignant lyrics by Smith and Michael Robinson, with Debravon Lewis's (RIP) emotive vocals delivering a deeply affecting performance. On Side-2, 'Listen' features a commanding rendition by the legendary Freddie Hughes, complemented by Sonny Lewis's sophisticated saxophone work. This limited 7" pressing resurrects a crucial piece of musical history, offering fans an exquisite taste of rare soul excellence.

Review: Collins And Collins were originally at the Top Of The Stairs back in 1980 when this one first landed. It has since become a revered underground classic much loved on the modern soul circuit as a timeless gem. The song was first composed by Ashford & Simpson who recorded their own version but when playing live would switch to the Collins & Collins version. The tune first came on CD via Expansion back in 1993 and now gets a first official 7" version back with the exceptionally rare version of Gamble & Huff's 'You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good' which first was recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975.

Review: A great choice of reissue by Kent Dance, Carolyn Crawford's 'Get Up And Move' is a fiery vocal soul highlight, and impassioned plea to the object of her affections to "get up and move", before he, she or they do something they "don't wanna do". It's a situation we can all relate to, but this recollection of Crawford's rendition of the scene lends the feeling an extra weight, igniting the inner carpe diem in all of us. From the unheard vaults of Mickey Stevenson's Mpingo label in the early 70s, it now comes double-billed with the Motownier 'Sugar Boy' on the flip, also hitherto unheard.

Review: UK Northern soul-food wholesalers Kent Dance are experts in procuring and supplying and continue to stick their necks out in this regard with a brand new reissue of The Soul Children's 'Standing In The Safety Zone', backed up by Sylvia And The Blue Jays' 'Put Me In The Mood' on the flip. The former track is an androgyne vocal soul, car-stereo'ed burst of joy, on which, despite the overarching feel of ecstasy, we hear duetting singers Anita Louis' and John Colbert's lyrics sing of remaining in one's comfort zone, which depending on the interpretation could either be heard as sardonic or earnest. Sylvia and co.'s B-side sounds as great as ever, being the breathy, flirtatious number it always was, yet with its best elements fleshed out ever-further by this 7" pressing.

Review: Classic alert! This sure-fire party starter is a timeless gem by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes originally released in 1973. It features the powerful vocals of Teddy Pendergrass and is a heartfelt expression of regret and longing over a lost love. With its upbeat tempo and lush orchestration it marked a significant shift in soul music as it blended traditional r&b with the emerging disco sound. It's built on an infectious groove with soulful harmonies and emotive lyrics which will always resonate with audiences and that is why it was such a chart-topping hit back in the day that remains a defining moment in the group's career and a timeless anthem of love and loss. It is backed here with the equally catchy 'Wake Up Everybody.'

Review: Shuggy's It's A Soul Thing featuring Alvin Worthy offers a captivating blend of soul and urban vibes. The vocal mix on Side-1 exudes catchiness and hipness, with smooth vocals delivered over a backdrop of sleek instrumentation. The track boasts a great horn section that adds depth and texture, contributing to its overall urban feel. On Side-2, the instrumental version showcases the band's excellent playability, with a groovy arrangement that allows the instrumentation to shine. Overall, 'It's A Soul Thing' is a standout offering from Shuggy, blending soulful vocals with tight musicality to create a track that is both infectious, enjoyable and a lot of fun.

Review: A new single release from the amazing Betty Black, following her first two releases 'Cry Me A River' and 'Sweet Dreams', both also available on Skyline Recordings. Whereas the first two releases were covers, the label now delivers a wholly original slice of Betty material, 'Lonely Man'. This single-sided soul stomper is a veritable wall of sound, in which Black sings of emotional miserliness, rainy days, bleeding hearts and missed opportunities against a lively backing, making for a sure-to-be hit.

Review: Roberta Flack's debut album First Takes remains a treasure of soul jazz voiced by one of the greatest to ever do it. Originally released in 1969, leading up to the release of the album Flack recorded a series of sessions which have only been revisited in scattered moments. As Gilles Peterson continues his exploration of the Warner Music archives, he's comes across these sessions and gathered them together for his Arc label. As well as different versions of classics from First Takes, there are cover versions such as Flack's take on Mongo Santamaria's 'Afro Blue' and Motown anthem 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'.

Review: This one is a rare soul gem that has not been easy to find on 7" for 40 years. It is one of the countless masterpieces that were produced by the great studio legend Larry Mizell who made it for Alabama born soul singer Brenda Lee Eager. She later relocated to Chicago and sang with Jerry Butler in his back up group Peaches and dueted with him on their million-selling duet 'Ain't Understanding Mellow'. Brenda did more backing singing with the likes of Ray Charles, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder and wrote songs recorded by Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight before laying this one down in 1974.

Review: Building on the triumph of Les Imprimes' inaugural album, Reverie, Big Crown Records presents two standout tracks from the album pressed onto this 7". For the A-side, Morten provides an edit and infuses the mix with an extra dose of depth reminiscent of Larry Levan's style. The result is striking and hits harder, igniting the dancefloor with its infectious rhythm while delivering a resonant message about the consequences of investing too much in the wrong relationships: On the B-side, 'You' bursts forth with a captivating crescendo, setting the stage for a sublime sweet soul melody. This beautiful declaration of love and reassurance is equally enchanting both musically and lyrically. Morten Martens' talent for arrangement shines through on both of these lovely tunes.

Review: Athens of the North is back in business this new year with a couple of singles as well as a new album dropping before the end of January. This time it is Bo'vel's Changes album that gets served up on wax having teased the act by including them on a compilation Just A Touch late last year. Their soul sound is distantly UK-centric but with influxes from dub, funk and more. That is well showcased here across ten tracks that were famously made in the mid-90s in Manchester without a big budget or big press campaign but became cult classics all the same.

Review: Isley Brothers hand many great tunes in their oeuvre but the superb soul gem 'My Love Is Your Love' stands out from the crowd. We don't think it has ever been on its own 45 rpm before now so shout out to Outta Sight for pressing it up. As well as the gorgeous A-side with its warm and sunny disposition, you have the more traditionally Motown-sounding flip, 'Tell Me It's Just A Rumour Baby, with its driving rhythm section and classic tambourines next to great vocal leads and rousing backing singers.

Review: Avis released only a small number of records in the mid-80s but they were all real soul pearlers. This one, 'Baby, This Love I Have' and 'Simple Things' is not dated but presumably form the same era on the same Feline Records label. FMG serve its up here on a tidy 7" with two remixed versions. The first is a drawn out and romantic affair with the lovestruck vocals and deep soul grooves melting your heart. It's a buttery performance from Avis full of yearning. On the flip is the Fraternity remix instrumental version which is even more slow and sensuous.

Review: A new four-track EP reflecting ever-expanded horizons for the band, 'Bloodline' is the latest output from loose-limbed, soul-stirring funk band Gabriels. Quickly finding fans in the likes of Elton John, Celeste, Paul Weller, Benji B, and Gilles Peterson, Gabriels should soon find plenty more on a record that could soundtrack a David Lynch epic; such is its drama, its suspenseful, late-night orchestral ruminations. Capped by frontman Lusk's voice - a weapon that swoops through the octaves breathlessly - Gabriels have that rare ability to make you re-evaluate music, and what it can do, in a heartbeat. Whilst Lusk provides the wow factor with that ridiculous larynx, Gabriels are very much a close-knit trio. Producer, keyboardist (and full-time video director) Ryan Hope hails from Sunderland but calls LA home. Fellow producer-composer and violinist Ari Balouzian, a man with endless musical projects on the go at any one time, gives Gabriels' songs a real 'feel' to them. Sultry, soulful mood music certainly isn't the band's modus operandi, but this new experimental EP should paint an altogether more rounded idea of where Gabriels are at today.

Review: Edwin Starr's poignant and bright original funk number 'Time' gets a notable reissue via Soul Brother, once again casting a retrospective light on the American Motown boy wonder's advanced songwriting capabilities and out-the-box subject matters. Never one to shy from important messages, 'Time' perhaps rivals Starr's 'War' in its laser-focused singular theme, yet this time errs more existential and metaphysical than political; here Starr muses on father time and his obscurant curtain, pondering the fact that the ticking clock is indeed something that all human subjects feel, yet not all sense the gravity of until it's too late. On the B comes the comparatively righteous romantic march, 'Running Back & Forth', which by comparison lilts through jovial croons and lovestruck reveries.

Review: Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984) introduced a distinctive blend of minimalistic soul and jazz-infused pop, contrasting sharply with the synth-heavy trends of its time. Lead vocalist Sade Adu's modest contralto and understated elegance enchanted listeners, earning comparisons to legends like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Review: A sophisticated blend of electronic, funk and soul, originally released in 1991 and back here in 7" form. Side-1 features 'Try My Love,' an underground jam that highlights Washburn's ability to blend these genres into a classy, enjoyable track. Side-2 presents the 2024 Boogie Back remix of 'Try My Love,' which smoothes things out and transforms the original into a melodic disco groove. This remix adds a fresh, modern twist while retaining the soulful essence of the track.

Review: 'When Will The Day Come' and 'Within The Sound' both captivate with their ethereal nu-soul essence. Review: If you're in the mood for some gently summery reggae-soul to warm you on cold winter nights, we'd heartily recommend this tidy new single from Tarrus Riley, son of legendary Jamaican vocalist Jimmy Riley. 'Love is Stronger Than Pride' is breezy, musically positive and gentle, with Riley delivering a slick and emotive lead vocal over a backing track rich in toe-tapping reggae grooves, subtle organ motifs, twinkling synth sounds and, most surprisingly, some rather lovely Spanish guitar motifs. It comes accompanied by a flipside 'Version' mix that's not all that dubbed-out, but nevertheless does a great job in showcasing the track's sunny and heart-warming instrumentation.

Review: Sade's Lovers Rock marks a significant evolution in the band's sound and image. Departing from their signature luxuriance, the album embraces a sparser, knottier sound that beautifully balances past influences with contemporary trends. Review: Kent Records have been doing a yeoman's job securing, collecting and releasing beloved and rare gems for a 7" reissue. Here, they collect two different recorded versions of the track 'My Little Girl'. The Bobby Garrett version from 1966 and offers a vintage soul sound while The Bob & Earl Band rendition is from 1970 and has heavy Motown influence in it. These rare soul reissues save the fans so much money versus buying an original copy. Thank you Kent!

Review: Following their acclaimed 2022 album Truth & Soul which was widely praised, this new double-sided 45rpm unveils new music from Michelle David and The True Tones's upcoming new record. It has 'Brothers And Sisters' on the A side, the lead single from the album, which boasts a Marvin Gaye-sque 70s soul vibe that is sure to ignite dancefloors with a hint of Northern Soul magic. On the flip side, 'This Is You' is a blue-eyed soul stomper. David's musical journey began in New York's church scene at age four. She later joined The Mission of Love at five and has a career that spans Broadway and includes collaborations with icons like Diana Ross and Michael Bolton.

Review: Get ready to experience a true soul classic reimagined with this special 7" reissue of Matt Covington's magical 'I'm So In Love With You' which was originally released in 1983. Now a real rare groove gem, it embodies early 80s r&b with its smooth vocals and lush instrumentation. The flip shakes up the ambiance to a higher set of stakes, deploying an upper-tempo, flunkie disco-funk, to hearsaid but hopeful talk of seas of love.

Towana & The Total Destruction's - 'Wear Your Natural, Baby' & Ty Karim's 'If I Can't Stop You (I Can Slow You Down)'. Both of these were originally released on Romark, which was a small Los Angeles label releasing funk and soul, and are destined to delight the hardcore afficianado and casual visitor to soul music alike.

Review: Record-collecting Jedis out there will know that this one is a real holy grail that is coveted by name, and now Record Store Day comes good and makes it widely available (well, in limited quantities) to all for a much more affordable price than you would get on second hand sites. This 7" allows you to experience the soulful magic of New York's The Village Choir who infuse Latin, soul, and jazz elements and more into two dancefloor gems that exude timeless elegance. Previously known for fetching over L500 on the secondhand market, this is an officially licensed reissue and what's more, it comes on nice heavyweight wax.

Review: The soul, funk and disco 7" community are a strong one. Besides garage rock and psychedelic rock, there might not be another genre that is so beloved on the small but mighty 45 RPM format. So, it completely makes sense if you are a newer producer releasing music in these genres then definitely know your fan base. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo doing just that. Their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full length album from 2019. The album has gained such strong reviews that they put it now as a single along with the Dub version on the reverse side. 'Stronger' is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. Need a party starter? Get this!

Review: Brooklyn-based psychedelic soul group Say She She have exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and multiple TV performances, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is expressive and powerful against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This single has both Say She She's cover - as well as the original - on a 7" disc.

Review: This unique 7" features two different artists - Raye Cole and Rachel Maxann - doing their own renditions of the same song, in this instance, 'Find Myself Another Man'. These versions bring a modern twist to a rhythm and blues banger that will transport you back to the good old days, Raye's version adding a bit more of a hop to it while Rachel's version has a garage band and surf rock tinge to it. Both are late night blues without a doubt though andit'sanother case of hats off to Original Gravity records for always keeping things fresh with their ever-changing moods.

In 1979 Jimmy Messina released his first album which featured the well-regarded Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz tracks 'Do You Want To Dance & 'Love is Here'. Dynamite Cuts collects both of these for an appearance on this 7". For fans of eclectic 70s gems, this little 45 will get some strong play.

Review: Detroit native Bobby Hutton made history by performing on the first nationally televised Soul Train episode in 1971. His journey in music led him to record with Phillips, producing many sought after tracks.
The two tracks on this 7" were originally released back-to-back in 1974 on the ABC label. Both songs were co-written and produced by McKinley Jackson, who played a significant role in crafting hits for Lamont Dozier, Freda Payne, and The Four Tops at ABC during the early to mid-70s. Grammy Award-winning Reggie Dozier, Lamont Dozier's brother, also contributed as a co-writer. This 7" has not been reissued in 40 years, and original copies are highly prized in the UK. Northern Soul music is one of the most in-demand genres for rare 45 diggers. This is a great example.

Review: Eddie Singleton, once a prominent figure in Los Angeles' music scene post-Shrine Records, recorded a poignant soul ballad with the little-known group Exclusive around 1969. Review: The Acid Jazz label recently celebratedits 35th year in business and, despite having an entire genre named afterit, has been very influential in supporting various genres, with its roster like a who's who of downtempo music. One of the newer artists that has received much critical acclaim has been New Street Adventure, their urban street soul with a modernist cool and insightful lyric have set out from the crowd. This reissue of 'The Big AC' on 7" features for the first time, the original version by the late Noel McCoy, taken from their standout 2015 album No Hard Feelings.
