Review: Beautiful Shibuya-esque hip jazz from Wa Yo Set, the dazzler jazz-funk band and fan favourite of the Urban Discos roster since 2020, when the quartet released their debut record, Boogieback. 'Don't Let Me Down' is their latest single for the label, and is rather like nothing we've ever heard before, overlaying a raspily swung vocal rap flow from MC KZ against a superbly improvised arrangement mixing snappy drums, classical guitar, double bass and alto sax. On the B is the similarly speedy 'Konyawa Boogie Back', an instrumental cover of the J-pop duo Halca and Yucali's 2009 chart smash.

Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Review: Wasia Project are a South Croydon-raised sibling duo - Olivia Hardy (vocals, guitar) and William Gao (keyboards, piano, vocals) - who strike a nice balance in sharing the limelight. This is only their second EP but you can tell they're going to be massive. They've already toured in support of Tom Odell and Laufey and they clearly have the quality to go the distance. 'Somebody Come Through' is as good as anything Sharon Van Etten has released. 'Track 6' brings back memories of listening to Beach House and 'To Get Better' is reminiscent of Matt Maltese. Underneath all the indie references there's a really strong classical training and we hear that on the closing track, with a masterful piano crescendo dimming the lights, but leaving us wanting for more.

Review: Tamara Lindeman was at a real transition point in life when What Am I Going to do With Everything I Know was first unveiled. A six track strong EP, here the moodiness and tangible sense of isolation, loneliness, and hopelessness that had once emanated from her voice dissipates into equally tender and gentile thoughts on an impending marriage and all that may come with it. For some, an equally troubling time in their lives, for others something to truly work towards and - when it finally arrives - celebrate, either way it's a subject ripe for emotional songwriting.
But in actual fact, Lindeman, her fiance and troupe treat the concept of matrimony with something close to apathy, or at least lackadaisical 'might as well'-ness. The culmination of this record, 'Almost Careless', sees her ask the question 'what if', but in a way that's neither excited nor nervous, but simply filled with inquisitiveness and a matter of fact consideration.

Review: It was always a pretty weird idea for Weezer to turn their attention on Vivaldi's violin concertos, The Four Seasons, and release a four-part EP series inspired by those classical landmarks. An out of the blue concept given this Rivers Cuomo-led outfit aren't exactly famed for waxing lyrical about the legendary work.
Nevertheless, fans should not be put off, nor should they expect to find a collection of tracks that look to rework Vivaldi via geek surf rock. Well, OK, maybe two of the songs here do exactly that - 'Opening Night' and 'Lawn Chair'. Or at least they both have string and guitar movements that look to pay homage to the master composer. But, for the most part, this is Weezer doing what Weezer do: sounding very much like Weezer.

Review: Buffalo rap icon WestsideGunn gets the reissue treatment courtesy of Hoffstein on this tidy 7", which brings the DJ Daringer-produced 'Rolack's' back in reach. On the A side we get the vocal and instrumental, which finds the man known as Alvin Worthy flowing in his distinctive, tightly-wound style over a warm and soulful beat from Daringer. The instrumental lets the beatsmith's cuts fly, and there's plenty of them. On the flip things get darker as 'Over Gold' strikes a noirish tone before 'Free Ike Free Kiki' slows down and freaks out in a haze of low-slung brilliance.

Review: Westside Gunn's latest project, Hitler Wears Hermes 8, shows his adeptness as a curator rather than a central figure. Gunn's writing exhibits moments of brilliance throughout. While each half of the project leans heavily on collaborators and mise-en-scene, the overall result is a supremely competent yet somewhat forgettable addition to Gunn's discography. Review: Jack White's Third Man Records are among the best in the business in turning people onto vinyl records and countering the model presented by streaming giants. Perhaps it's partly down to the White Stripes legend's early years as a restorer of vintage furniture, but whichever product appears with his Third Man brand on it has the look and feel of real craftsmanship, with a meticulous and stylish eye for detail. This new one-sided etched 7" - who needs b-sides? - is a real gem to have in anyone's collection as it oozes with Jack White's punk rock spirit and makes a real case for affordable single production. This loud, banging instrumental track originally came out on streaming services only in 2017 and was White's first track in three years at the time. White is at his viscerally entertaining best when he's at his heaviest, with the distortion cranked. And the signals emanating from his amp here sound like an indie-rock banging of the war drum, making for a fun yet furious two-and-a-half minutes.

Review: First released on streaming platforms last summer, Wilco's 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' EP was uniformly praised by critics. Much more than a stop gap between albums (it arrived roughly 12 months after the outfit's lauded 13th studio full-length, Cousin), the six-track set bristles with inventiveness while flitting between styles and tempos. Review: Gamm has more recently become synonymous with jazz, Latin, disco and soul edits but right now is on admission to go back to its roots. And they are hip-hop from the golden era. Wipe The Needle does a superb job of harking back to that legendary time in the 90s when dusty drums and crispy claps were all we wanted to hear. First up he tackles the iconic 'Shook One's by Moby Deep and flips it into a slow motion groove that is deep as you like. On the flip, Jay-Z's 'Ignorant Shit' (Wipe The Needle remix) is more defined by the original bars, but the beats are just as sick.

Review: After Robert Grey's 1990 exit, Wire morphed into WIR, a project designed to wrap up their Mute Records contract with a stripped-down, sequencer-led approach. Graham Lewis took lead vocals while the band reworked their own back catalogue. A chance to reflect on what had been, as opposed to what was yet to be, WIR's lifespan was brief, with only a handful of shows and two conceptual events dubbed I Saw You In Clapham (April 1992) and Vienna (February 1993) rolled into the ensuing campaign. On the Vienna trip, they recorded a sprawling 25-minute session for Austria's ORF, curated by Peter Rehberg of MEGO fame, released by Touch in 1996. This 2025 remaster adds a fresh take on their darkest pop moment, 'So & Slow', reimagined in a live-inspired arrangement with a nod to Taylor Swift's re-recording style.

Review: If you've been keeping an eye on the COVID-19 musical landscape a few things will be clear by now - much is in pieces, and Working Men's Club's debut album, arguably this year's most anticipated, has been postponed until October. You might also have picked up on the fact they made this pandemic party megamix available to stream for free for one week over summer, meaning it's probably scored a few living room moments already.
The release is basically 21-minutes of seamlessly melded synthdom taken from a full record which, as yet, hasn't really been heard save for a few tasters. And the result is perhaps the best example of the intensity, energy and drive that defines every one of the band's fabled live performances. Synth-punk-elec-indie packing huge sounds, finely tuned details and an overall forward atmosphere.
