Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Mr K & DPRTNDRP - "Suppression" (dub) (5:11)
Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Gruffa (4:15)
Pastorius (4:40)
Ocean Echo (4:40)
Pips (4:14)
Review: Cutcross is a label "created to champion the melting pot of basscentric sounds teetering around 140 bpm." The label is run by Sicaria & Mia Koden and this seventh EP keeps up the fine early momentum, but is also a last release they will put out.It joins totters two of the UK underground's finest with Sicaria Sound set staple 'Gruffa' by Nova up first - it's as deep as dubstep gets with a low end so filthy you'll be reaching for the bleach. 'Pastorius' has pinging guitar riffs that weirdly remind us of the Seinfeld theme and 'Ocean Echo' then gets all watery with oodles of echo. 'Pips' is melting of fairground melodies and dark low ends. Adios to a fine little imprint.

Review: Belgian bass HQ DUPLOC continue striding into a decade of business with this update of their 140 Allstars collection. This powerful second volume takes off where the inaugural instalment left us, it's another snapshot into the future of dubstep as it celebrates the new generation of innovative production talent keeping the 140 vibe alive into the 2020s. Flavours range from smouldering trad dub (Sedan's heavyweight 'Tecc') to contemporary, subversive springy bubblers (Distinct Motive's bell-ringing 'Champ') and all things between.

Sub Basics & Toura - "Cause" (5:06)
Effect (4:09)
Call (4:39)
Response (5:08)
Review: Bait is a label run by Beatrice M that has built up a fine following for its digital releases and has also now made the successful move to vinyl. Sub Basics is next up and is a key UK figure in the deep dubstep scene who has had big support for his tunes on the likes of Lion Charge, Foundation Audio and Juan Forte from Ben U.F.O. and Kia. First up he links with Toura for the liquid rhythms of 'Cause' while 'Effect' gets more prickly with a ticking lead synth and deep underwater dub vibes. 'Call' brings some deft melody and more trance-inducing grooves while closer 'Response' is a nice and punchy dub techno cut with ice-cold hi-hats.

Review: Tokyo bass music stalwart T5UMUT5UMU 'beams in' to a certain sonic arena - manned by con-tempo-reign-eous rulers of bass pace, Sneaker Social Club - for a fresh Richter-scale exploder, 'Gen'. Riffing off of trap, grime and dubstep, but with added nods to gqom and Chinese trad also in tow, 'Gen' proffers a weighty but organic bass sound - sensorially down-to-Earth, yet no less geysering, no less ground-shaking nor liable to send one flying.

Review: .Grubs up groovers! Taiko gets his jig on with White Peach and he's serving up some crumpets. Linking with good friends and able chefs Ed Hodge and Sam Emery, 'Crumpets' is a beautiful funk cut that nods towards the vibes of Silki and Swindle. It's backed up by three more club-focused originals: the harp-plucking 'LM', the creepy, creaky floorboard groaning 'Rise Above' and the graveyard stalking 'We Do' Juicy peaches, each and every.

Where Ya From (4:41)
Review: Now four years deep, Taiko's 'Oaken' still shines as White Peach remind us with this lovely limited pink vinyl. The title track, smouldering with Hodge's sax clouds, hits with a hard chill edge before we spiral deeper and deeper into the mystic mire. 'Lawless' cascades into a fluting tooting mess, 'Spent' is the sonic equivalent of a marble effect, all molten and oily but prone to sudden flurries and 'Where Ya From' finishes on the most dancefloor minded vibe as the bass wobbles away under those ever present flutes. Sublime. Just as it was back then. Don't sleep on this like you did last time.

Make It A Dub (Split remix)
Review: We're glad that plenty of artists seem to be back making dubstep again - purists will say it never went away but the spotlight sure did move on after that initial explosion 15-plus years ago. Her we find Teffa going deep on Subotage's fourth EP with a quartet of deliciously heavy steppers. 'Event Horizon' kick off with sparse streetwise swagger and low end oscillations, 'Turn On The Sound' has a characterful lead synth zipping about a desolate metropolis late at night and then 'Make It A Dub' has a classic dubstep feel with endless echo, frazzled synths and that lurching sense of low energy menace. A Split remix closes out a vital EP.

Teffa & Breez - "7 Days" (3:45)
Review: Award-winning dubstep label operating out of Liverpool, LDH deliver some supreme goods here as Teffa and Breez go head to head with two solos and two collabos. 'Passing Through' sets the tone with a curmudgeonly bassline guffing around some deliciously slouchy drums. Old school with the warmth to back it up. Teffa's 'A17' is a much more futuristic, tense sounding piece with alien basses and lasers galore while Breez's 'Upper' maintains the menace but with bags and bags of room (and occasional clip-loads) Finally the pair lock horns again for '7Days'. A bubbly subaquatic trip, freshened up with big waves of trippiness and haunted cries, let's hope these two cats are forced in the ring together more often. Power up!

Abstraction (4:29)
Review: Experienced French fusionist Paul Tenebre has become a firm favourite of the WNCL Recordings boss man Bob Bharma (AKA West Norwood Cassette Library) because this is his third Ep on the label since 2017. It is another brain frying, frothy mix of brutal techno and heavy bass that kicks off with the powerful 'Sub Methods.' Elsewhere 'Hybrids' ships into a more subtle, stripped back rhythm that is fizzing with sinewy synth modulations. There is then the dark and ruching sound of 'Wum' and hyperspeed rave of 'Prototype' before 'Abstraction' closes down on a more atmospheric bit of ambient design.

Review: Sub Basics is back on his own fledgling label Temple of Sound - but under a new alias. As Tommy Basics he leads into a fresh house sound but still serves it up with plenty of his textbook bass-heavy low ends. 'Latitude' is a bubbly groover with dusty drums and fleshy basslines that get you moving and warmed up. 'Longitude' is even deeper, with smeared dub chords and woody percussive hits peppering the laid-back and inviting groove. Two stylish sounds from this versatile producer.

Ritual takes the lead with Riko Dan upfront laying down bar after bar with his signature venom. It's in the best possible company... 'Descent' takes us on woozy meditative headtrip while the finale 'Barebones' nods its wonky cap in the direction of broken beat and mid 90s breakbeat sounds. An exciting, bold and wide-ranging release.

Metamorphism (7:36)

Fraction (5:34)
Spectre (4:46)
Review: Beatrice M's amusingly entitled Bait label has in fact become exactly that - very desirable to those who know. Its latest is a four tracker that serves as a taster of a forthcoming digital album by Trois-Quarts Taxi System. Behind the moniker is Eloi Petillon, a versatile producer, DJ and live act who has a knack for blurring genre lines. On this one, they mix up elements of dubstep, techno and d&b into soundscapes that are cerebral, hypnotic and psychedelic. Each one is made from futuristic sound design, field recordings and intricate polyrhythms: 'Metamorphism' warped, linear, deft and brilliant deep techno. 'Coma' is more busy, 'Fraction' has wispy synths and a sparse soundscape and 'Spectre' is a fizzy, skeletal sound that tickles the brain.

Review: Taking things back to some of their earliest manoeuvres, Truth return to Deep Medi. The label where it all started for the NZ duo. Most recently spotted on the label with 'Subchasers' way back in 2020, they now return with one of their most beguiling collections since their Shadow People project. Eerie, spacious and deep as you like, 'Temple Of Eye' is a rising sense of slimy tension. Intense but stacked with bags of room, this is made strictly for big rigs. 'The Venusians' keeps the dancefloor pressure but with more of a lighter footed dubby sway and trippy eastern vocal textures. Meanwhile on the B, 'Secret Portal' conjures vibes of Daft Punk, Joker and KOAN Sound and 'Galapagos' dusts off the guitar for a jazzy cruise into the sunset. Truth at their very best.

Review: The bad news? We're all absolutely doomed. There's no way back from where humanity has taken us. We seem drawn like moths to a dystopic light. The good news? If this is anything to go by (or the inaugural one back in 2018) then hell has a ruddy sick soundtrack. Deep, beguiling, disarming; vibes on this black mirror menu range from the pure drama and stern soliloquy of Rider Shafique over 'Iceman' with Karnage and the tribal hypnosis of Sofa's 'Lost' (which is a really interesting departure from the jungle she is best known for) and plenty of dubby reflection rippling throughout. See you on the dark side.

Non-linear, disarming yet soft-focus and awash with different textures and instruments, we're eased and teased between hypnotic, lo-fi flavours... the percussive insistence and dubby ripples of 'Memory', the intergalactic big beat of 'Mainframe' and stuttering cosmic moombah of 'Ghosts' are just three of the provocative and intriguing highlights. Review: Two The Hardway is back with more bonkers brilliance. 'Who Said' is lithe, bumpy and twisted electronic music that draws on bass, acid and wave for its mysterious vibe and intoxicating groove. The vocal version is dubbed out and layered with dub-wise vocals that give it an even more tropical feel. 'Hot Number' then brigs some hypnotic sax lines over dagga-tinged beats, weird sound effects and an evermore powerful rhythm. A Test Pressing Version spins out on jungle beats and then the dub of 'Blossom' reigns this wonderfully chaotic and unconventional EP to a close.

Yushh opens with churning, bass heavy melodic techno that floats you high up in the atmosphere, Kincaid's 'Inside' (feat J Caesar) is an eerie minimal piece with ambient synths and a percolating post-jungle rhythm, then Tristan Arp's 'Circling The Abyss' peppers a skeletal beat with toms and hits to make you move. PinballSpider and Johnny Hunter close out with a pair of rhythmic techno tunes that are utterly futuristic.

Review: Daniel Lopatin's Software label gives us another intriguing debut album in the shape of Tallesen's Stills Lit Through. The work of Cayman Johnson, a producer and visual artist from New York State's Hudson Valley area who makes what Software describes as "enigmatic, sensual world-building music." As Stills Lit Through demonstrates, it's an apt description. Johnson's woozy, '80s-referencing style has a lot in common with label owner Lopatin's early music as Oneohtrix Point never, though his mix of fractured pop and clipped, futuristic beats sound like Washed Out being put into a mixer with Pearson Sound. Very good stuff once again from the Software camp.
