Volkswagenesque
Volkswagenesque (7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FNR 172. Rel: 25 Oct 21

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Volkswagenesque (4:07)
Miles Away (2:53)
Review: Given that both have eclectic musical tastes and play a multitude of instruments, it makes perfect sense that Misha Paniflov and Shawn Lee have ended up working together on a handful of seven-inch singles. 'Volkswagenesque', the opening gambit from the pair's latest "45", is another strong sonic statement. It boasts the sun-kissed warmth and laidback vibe heard on many of Lee's productions, with the duo wrapping glistening guitars, gravelly funk-rock solos, spacey synths and warming bass around a languid, percussion-rich rhythm track. You'll find more weighty, beautifully played percussion on flipside 'Miles Away', a more low-slung and dancefloor-ready affair that features some excellent electric piano playing from Lee.

Cat: FNR 173. Rel: 25 Oct 21

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Sigmund Jahn Bossa (2:52)
Aquaria (2:27)
Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

The Sensational Disciples - "My Own Way" (2:24)
Elder William Smith - "His Voice" (3:02)
Review: The reverend of many aliases, Kris Holmes returns with two more woozy slabs of raw funk. Following "Bumps In The Road" earlier this year, both "My Own Way" and "His Voice" are captured with full feeling and atmosphere from the room with warm lo-fi brilliance. The former goes for more of a straight-soul feel while the latter is gutsy piece of gospel funk that will could convert the baddest sinner in seconds. Lord have mercy.

That's On You (feat Rickey Calloway) (3:09)
That's On You (instrumental) (3:31)
Review: Last spotted whipping up groove magic with Amp Fiddler, highly respected Detroit funk collective Will Sessions tag up with another old friend, funk king Rickey Calloway. First spotted with the band on Funk Night Records on "Shake It Up, Shake It Down", they instantly rekindle their vibe with this deep groove JB style excursion. Led by Rickey's commanding spoken world, driven by the band's fluid like motion and just a touch of cosmicity in the production, it's another stone-cold gem from some of the tightest cats in D Town.

Good Things
Review: Detroit funk collective Will Sessions sounds like they've jumped four five decades directly from the 60s. Their fuzzy, loose tightness works as a perfect bed for Coko's fiery emotional vocals as they treat us to two Sharon Jones-level funk sessions. "Boss Lady" is a direct strutter with spit fire vocal passion and an overwhelming JBs style swing while "Good Things" is more of a bluesy, sultry workout with a killer percussive breakbeat breakdown. Listen to the boss lady! She knows what she's talking about!

Run, Don't Walk Away (part 2) (3:09)
Review: Classic Soul styles from Detroit ensemble Will Sessions pressed up on authentic dinked 45! Run Don't Walk Away finds the Sam Beaubien-led band working once more with vocalist Coco, and if you picked up Boss Lady, that 2013 funk jammer they previously collaborated on, you will be all over this like a bad suit. Coco takes centre stage here, her heart-wrenchingingly soulful vocals leading the way whilst the Will Sessions gang beat out an instrumental groove you'd be hard pressed to separate from the JBs finest.

Bumps In The Road (2:59)
Bumps In The Road (instrumental) (3:48)
Review: The US' Funk Night Records is pushing some serious heat as of late, especially given the fact that it's managing to find some real horsepower amid the contemporary generation of funk and soul - a rarity to be appreciated and recognised, these days. Bishop Smith is joined by The Sensational Disciples band to deliver "Bumps In The Road", a gloriously soulful song that gives new meaning to the term 'raw'; this might well be the most seductive piece of music we have heard this year and, if that sounds like an exaggeration, then you might just have to check it out for yourself. The instrumental, is naturally as wonderful, but the vocals on the A-side have the power to remain imprinted in your mind for days and days. This is very warmly recommended.

The Snow Surfers - "The 8 Number"
United Boppers Unit - "R&B No 1"
Review: Mastered by the legendary Didier from Finnish label Timmion, Detroit's Funk Night bangs out another highly limited dinked 45 for the dirty funk lovers among us. Once again it's another 7 inch from the Fun Shingaling night in Russia. Two artists, two tracks: first up The Snow Surfers serve up a jangly guitar stomper with drum heavy organ funk and an incessant bass groove. On the flip, United Boppers Unit's "R&B" is aided by an infectious raw piano and more of that jangly guitar.

Tito's Revenge (3:22)
Aftermath (4:14)
Review: The Soul Motivators made quite an impact with their Do Right! Music released 2013 debut album, Free To Believe. Somewhat surprisingly, Tito's Revenge marks their first appearance on wax since. The title track is, predictably, something of a horn-heavy gem. It effortlessly joins the dots between fuzzy early '70s funk, Hammond-heavy grooves, and the kind of dusty Afro-funk that's all the rage right now. The Afro-funk influence is even stronger on similarly killer flipside "Aftermath". While sadly not a funk cover of the Nightmares on Wax rave classic of the same name (now that would have been something), it nevertheless packs a serious punch - thanks, in no small part, to a series of sparring horn solos.

Side Hustle (3:39)
Review: Who says the USA ain't putting out fine soul these days? If Detroit's Funk Night Records is anything to go by, then the scene is very much alive and kicking. This new EP by The Soul Motivators, a vast collective of musicians from the Detroit area, offer a magnificent cover of 1971's "It Ain't Fair, But It's Fun" by The Fabulous Originals, doing a great job of keeping the same raw, sketchy form of the original. The flip of this 7" features "Side Hustle", a slower, freakier funk swinger with a sublime blend of psych guitars and pure, unadulterated brass. Lovely.

Smell Of Detroit (3:47)
Review: One of Frank Raines' most repeated offenders on Funk Night Records, Russian troupe The Soul Surfers return with two more on-point contemporary funk jams. "My Crew" is a lullaby level ode to mates with a hip-hop-inspired backbeat and gilded harmonies from the crew themselves. "Smell Of Detroit" takes us way out west with an almost cosmic, heavy-washed feel and an old America feel that goes back further than the steel city's most enduring legacy. On-point.

Leading with a deep dream jazz funk instrumental "Signals", the vibe and warmth are set to the most immersive levels possible. The same can be said for the rippling guitars and organs of the instrumental version of "My Crew". Such a strong groove it could easily be instrumental. Tip!

"Rap It Together" jumps with that authentic studio fuzz and precision musicianship that's both tight and loose. Beyond The Cosmic Rays (4:01)
Review: Harbans Srih's 'The Wireman' comes via the Funk Night label but only on a strictly limited 300 copies and it is sure to sell out because jazz-soul doesn't get more authentic than this. The A-side title tune is a real adventure with live drums overlaid by a sultry sax line and spaced-out synth work. It's multi-layered and hugely evocative. The B-side tune is more deep and mysterious, with curious melodies and an inquisitive sax tentatively leading you on through the night. Two beauties from this ever-excellent label. .

On this one, 'Bostin ' Norton' gets going with some steamy and seductive sax notes which rise out of a bubbly funk brew. 'Play It Again Sam' los it don t more pensive and prying melodies which unfurl at their own pace of icy cymbals and deep drums.

Review: Stretch Money delivers a characteristically smooth, polished vibe with 'Take Money 25'. It's a track that has it all - funky rhythms and soulful grooves and superb vocals. It also does what all good hip-hop does in that it manages to blend contemporary style with elements of the classic sound without being too much of an old-school homage. Catchy hooks and rhythmic flow abound on this low-key but feel-good anthem with lyrics that encourage you to stay focused and hustle hard. On the flip, 'It Takes A Moment To Make Money' is just as seductive and soul-fuelled.

Greasy Meat Pocket (3:19)
Review: The tireless work of Funk Night continues here more steamy late-night sounds. This time it's Sunday Papers at the helm and first off comes 'Smoke.' It's a dense, busy cut with sleazy guitar riffs, plenty of sonic grit, raw, edgy drums and vocal stabs as well as some hints of psyched-out soul. On the flip, the rather horribly titled 'Greasy Meat Pocket' is actually a lovely sound with pensive piano chords and signature Hammond organ grooves that make for a nice late night jaunt.

Review: A boxy and reverby soul emulation, 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is an optimist's dream. This soul bit recorded by Sunsay and The Soul Surfers charts a collaboration between two contemporary bands, achieving an impressively convincing retro-throwback to the 1970s with all its lo-fi studio tricks. Singing of equanimity and gratefulness, we are assured we can "still stand tall" as long as we appreciate the positive facets of life.

Review: 'Be Thankful For What You Got' is a stone-cold soul classic that will most likely be best known to you as a tune that Massive Attack did a fine job of reworking on one of their fantastic early albums. This version by Sunday and The Soul Surfers is a gloriously sunny one with lush strings, gently rolling drums and lovely acoustic guitars all finished off by the breezy vocal up top. There is also an instrumental on the flip for those who like it more paired back.

Review: Saint Tropez Orchestra formed after an initial commission by the British library music company Dime. Recorded at Studio Des Fontaines in just 25 hours, and using the very Hammond organ owned by a former member of one of the house bands at the Zoom Zoom nightclub in Saint Tropez (which would have been used onstage for Brigitte Bardot, Michel Polnareff, Jacques Dutronc, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jane Birkin), Themes et Atmospheres is a no-fluff compendium of funk instrumentals, rolling down the tinteds and clouding the glasses with bass-centric riffers from 'Pop Psychedelique' to 'Dans Le Sac', erring on the serous and erotic.

Review: Shawn Lee steps into untamed territory with Toe Rag Rhythms, a perc-ky odyssey trading in polish for pulse, spontaneity, and raw funk energy. Departing from his usual tightly composed fare, this session hears Lee, a seasoned multi-alias musician and composer from London, joined by four more percussionists, losing himself in a jungle of drums, shakers, bells, and earthbound textures. Lee adds tinkerbell piano lines to ground-lift the otherwise swirling, syncopated chaos, finishing each tracks with a loose-limbed, hypnotic charm. Whether the humid bounce of 'Tropical B Boy', the cinematic swirl of 'Dance Of The Pharoahs', or the laid-back snap of 'Rainforest Hum', this record easily earns its place alongside global groove rarities. Wild, rhythmic, totally addictive.

It was written while he underwent some personal transformation and is a mix of heavenly and celestial melodies and moods with deep nostalgia and elements of jazz, classical, experimental and film music. It makes for a moving listen with majestic arrangements really making their mark throughout this fine fusion album.

Live For Life
Review: Oscar 'Sholto' Robertson's album Letting Go of Forever prides itself on being an expansive musical journey, building on the momentum of his critically acclaimed EP 'The Changing Tides Of Dreams'. This 26-track double LP reflects Sholto's rich influences, from Mozart's dramatic 'Lacrimosa' to David Axelrod's eclectic productions. The album's initial tracks, including the evocative 'For The Love Of Stripes' and the atmospheric 'Ligurian Storm', are a signature blend of orchestral and instrumental artistry. 'For The Love Of Stripes' features lush strings and choral elements, interwoven with flutes and percussion to create a nostalgic, dreamy vibe. The track is inspired by the concept of stripes as both a visual divider and a symbol of individuality, which Sholto translates into a stunning musical narrative. 'Ligurian Storm' tells the story of a stormy journey through Italy, combining harp, vibraphone, and synths to evoke the beauty and drama of nature's transformation. Drawing comparisons to the Cinematic Orchestra and Surprise Chef, Sholto's work merges the soulful warmth of jazz and the experimental spirit of 60s and 70s soundtracks. This album should resonate with emotional depth and cinematic flair for anyone who listens.

Lead vocalist Marietta Smith fills out each mix with clarity and vavavoom, the likes of 'Better Times', 'Don't You Doubt It Baby' and 'Echo's Theme' marking a terrific rouser soul record following four early-career singles released via Lunch Money and Fnr.
