Review: Black Uhuru and Sly & Robbie was a powerhouse collaboration that gifted reggae some of its most vital anthems. Backed up by the toughest rhythm section in the business, Black Uhuru were able to push a new urgency in Jamaican music which has lost none of its power over 40 years later. This compilation on TABOU1 gathers together a treasure trove of A-sides, dub mixes and even especially resotred dubplate specials from Black Uhuru's purple patch between 1977 and 1980, when they were recording almost exclusively for Sly & Robbie's Taxi label. Some of these tunes are beyond the wildest dreams of any reggae devotee who knows their onions, but even for the casual listener there's magic in every riddim.

Review: Silva Screen Records continues their vast compilation project here with another tribute to the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, the legendary former member of Yellow Magic Orchestra who passed not so long ago. They have pressed this one up to various formats and this is a gatefold transparent lime green and black splattered vinyl from the acclaimed film scorer. He wrote for epics such as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Sheltering Sky and The Last Emperor. This album takes in plenty of the most standout tracks from those movies, all performed by the Brussels Philharmonic and conducted by Dirk Brosse.

Review: You had us at Sakamoto. Or rather you had us at "excerpts from Ryuichi Sakamoto's time working under Nippon Colombia's label, Better Days. First released in 1992, this 12-track compilation runs from tracks that appeared on the Japanese synth legend's debut album, Thousand Knives, first released in 1978, through to songs written with the iconic session group KYLYN, featuring celebrated guitar great Kazumi Watanabe. Ever the auteur, even if you didn't know this was Sakamoto in proper landmark mode, there's no chance the sounds here could really be confused for anyone or anything else. It's mature and intelligent, yet strangely - and typically - fun, childlike and a little cartoonish, sharing as much in common with experimental electronica that was emerging during the 1970s and 1980s as video game scores from the 1990s.

Review: Originally released in 2017, async was the 19th studio album from Japanese heavyweight Ryuichi Sakamoto, breaking a near-decade-long hiatus during which he was treated for throat cancer. And it's incredibly dense stuff to dive into, with genius on display both in terms of theoretical approach to recording, and avant-garde thinking behind what a record could and should be. Of course, that's hardly surprising for Sakamoto, whose legacy as one of Japan's foremost sonic adventurers may still not be stated enough, even after all the post-humous repressings and tributes. On this outing, then, we have strange, otherworldly interpretations of everyday instruments, a heavy focus on playing with textures of sound, bits of artists such as David Sylvian and Paul Bowles reading texts, found noises from city streets and themes of mortality, and our difficulty in accepting that truth.

Review: The latest title in Impulse's 180-gram audiophile reissue series is the 1969 Pharoah Sanders classic Karma. The record has been newly mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original analogue tapes and comes in a deluxe gatefold jacket. The album was the tenor sax master's third record for the label and has since taken on the mantle of being a milestone in the spiritual jazz movement. The A-side is taken up by one track that in particular defines that sound, while the flipside builds on the mood with 'Light of Love' and 'Colors.'

Review: As recently as this year with his Floating Points collaboration, Pharoah Sanders has proven to be in excellent form. Which is all the more remarkable given the length of his career. Oe of the early highlights was the 1981 classic, Rejoice, which explored a more mellow sound than previous works. The record is rife with superb improvs a la late 50s John Coltrane as well as fine turns from top players including pianists Joe Bonner and John Hicks, bassist Art Davis and drummers Elvin Jones and Billy Higgins. Bobby Hutcherson adds some start vibes work and that helps the album to hold your attention closely throughout.

Review: Seminal; containing or contributing to the seeds of later development: creative, original. Or at least that's one definition of a word that rarely feels more appropriate than when used in conjunction with Sex Pistols. Quite where we're supposed to begin writing about The Filth & The Fury is anyone's guess. A retrospective compilation encapsulating some of the punk pioneers' most cherished moments, alongside a slew of material that many less-informed fans may have previously been unaware of, let's start by simply saying 'it bangs'. Understatement of the century, despite their back catalogue of just one LP, Sex Pistols actually had an extraordinary output in terms of volume in the run up to debut (and sole) album, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols. This is a chance to get more closely acquainted, and we compel you to seize it and hold on tight.

This new collection cerebrates the genre from 1994 onwards with Sinclar featuring alongside the likes of Cute B, Salome De Bahia, Reminiscence Quartet and many more. It's a colourful and vibrant three-box set that will bring inescapably good vibes to any party. Must cop.

Review: Carl Marshall's musical journey spans over 30 years, but his popularity has surged in recent times. Raised in the vibrant music scene of New Orleans, Louisiana, Marshall played guitar in Sam & the Soul Machine, which was a group featuring talents like Aaron Neville and Cyril Neville. In 1976, he debuted with Movin' On under the name Soul Dog and it included the proto-rap track 'Soul Dog' delivered in a trucker's MC style. Beyond performing, Carl worked as a radio personality at Kiss 104.1 in Meridian, Mississippi and his enduring dedication has cemented his legacy in the world of soul and funk, as has this wonderful showcase of his sound.

Review: Since debuting at the tail end of the 1990s, Frank Timm's Sound Stream project has provided us with some of the most memorable and impactful disco-house loop jams around. It's been five years since Timm's last outing under the alias though, making this expansive triple-pack of club cuts a genuinely notable release. Review: A recent search through the Red Records archive uncovered two quarter-inch tapes, originally thought to be blank. To everyone involved's surprise, each reel held a previously unknown track by the cult jazz group Sphere. This find is remarkable for those who know as Sphere's official recording catalogue is notably sparse and in fact is limited to just two Elektra Musician releases and two Red Records live recordings. This discovery adds valuable depth to the legacy of a group with few official recordings and brings new weight to their influential contributions to jazz.

Review: US producer SSPS is a ram outsider who is well known to fans of the weird and the wonderful. His adventurous experiments have landed on labels like L.I.E.S. and Kode run by Traxx and collide punk, noise, wave, hardcore, slow beat and jakbeat. Review: Stereolab continue to trawl through their vast back catalogue on the fourth instalment of the Switched On compilation series. This edition, titled Electronically Processed, focuses primarily on rare and hard-to-find tracks (many tucked away on very limited seven-inch singles), with a handful of alternative versions, outtakes and previously unreleased cuts thrown in. Fans will find much to savour across the two-disc set, from Krautrock-tinged Chanson songs (see the rather fine 'Household Names' and Serge Gainsbourg-with-added-funk vibes of 'The Super It'), to more experimental instrumentals from soundtracks, and even the odd dancefloor-ready stomper ('Dimension M2'). In a word: essential.
