Review: In the field of spiritual jazz, there are few albums as seminal as Pharoah. Sanders sadly passed on to the next realm in 2022 amidst a wave of renewed appreciation for his work, and Luaka Bop have taken on the task of reissuing this otherworldly classic in fine style. As well as the original album, a second record features two previously unreleased live versions of 'Harvest Time', and the package comes with a 24-page booklet featuring a wealth of additional material to round out the experience of one of the all-time greatest jazz albums.

The A-side is taken up by one track that in particular defines that sound, while the flipside builds on the mood with 'Light of Love' and 'Colors.'

Review: In 2016 saxophonist and clarinetist Shabaka Hutchings established the "Ancestors" collective of South African musicians to perform live and record debut album "Wisdom Of Elders", a journey into the spiritual and avant-garde side of jazz inspired in part by the struggles of previous generations of black musicians. Four years on, the Sons Of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming member has reassembled the collective for album number two, "We Are Sent Here By History". It treads similar musical territory to its similarly essential predecessor, with Hutchings and his South African collaborators presenting tracks that, in his words, "meditate on the fact of our coming extinction as a species". While the music is nowhere near as doom-laden and miserable as that may suggest - it's very entertaining, thoughtful and spiritually involved - as albums go "We Are Sent Here By History" is certainly hard hitting.

Review: Indian fusion band Shakti were formed all the way back in 1974, and after a disbanding and long hiatus in the fallout, they made a comeback in 2020 with This Moment. Despite the time passed, the original lineup of John McLaughlin (guitar), Zakir Hussain (tabla), L. Shankar (violin), and T.H. Vinayakram (ghatam), came together once more after a whopping 40 years. The album, now reissued by Abstract Logix, provides the most modern take yet on their craft, blending elements of experimental, jazz, rock, classical, and Indian music into a unique and mesmerizing sound.

Review: This new quadruple CD release captures the legendary 'classic quartet' of The Soft Machine band during their final European tour on February 27th and 28th, 1971. While previously released sets from the latter date exist, this marks the first complete release of both nights, with half of it being entirely unreleased material. The performances, held in a relatively intimate venue, offer a captivating stereo experience. Soft Machine's concerts at the Henie-Onstad Art Center in Norway were unique and set against an art exhibition backdrop as well as being accompanied by Mark Boyle's films. Listening back now and it's easy to hear the band's dynamic evolution across consecutive nights in the unique museum setting.

Review: A recent search through the Red Records archive uncovered two quarter-inch tapes, originally thought to be blank. To everyone involved's surprise, each reel held a previously unknown track by the cult jazz group Sphere. This find is remarkable for those who know as Sphere's official recording catalogue is notably sparse and in fact is limited to just two Elektra Musician releases and two Red Records live recordings. This discovery adds valuable depth to the legacy of a group with few official recordings and brings new weight to their influential contributions to jazz.

With standout artists like Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki, this compilation features exceptional performances, such as 'Nardis' by Masabumi Kikuchi, 'A Green Caterpillar' by Masaru Imada Trio, and 'Feel Like Makin' Love' by Isao Suzuki Sextet. The selection spans ballads, bebop, and more avant-garde sounds, reflecting the label's diverse offerings. What sets this compilation apart is the meticulous mastering by Isao Kikuchi and cutting by Katsutoshi Kitamura, ensuring the original recordings' clarity is preserved.
