Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

Review: The electronic minimal funk of Filewile's "Damn" paints the perfect soundscape for New York Rapper RQM's brilliant anecdote about a ride on the A-train on a rainy Sunday. On this tune rhyme and music blend in rare harmony to create a funny, crisp and sexy image of an only too familiar situation. Two remixes accompany the original version, one by Jahcoozi and the other by the Round Table Knights. The extra track is a dubby reggae tune named "Forward", featuring Rider Shafique of the Son Of Man/Pressure Drop camp.

Review: Is it possible for us humanoids to tire of this Roy Ayers funk bomb? We really don't think so. Such a distinctive, dreamy riff, instantly affirmative lyrics and eternal groove, it's what we call in the record shop game as a 'classic'. This version from French Afrofunker Medline pays respect well; different enough to bother with (faster, interesting synth sounds, a super-tight groove) but authentic enough to sizzle your synapses with shudders.

Review: Re-press alert! It's the tune that simply won't quit... Gregory Porter's incredible groove-workout "1960 What?" came to fame earlier this year thanks to Opolopo's Kick & Bass rerub. But if you're looking for something more organic and less electronic then Gerardo Frisina's Cuban Soul mix is the perfect solution. Jazz addicts should head directly to the B-side as Room56 and Japanese headliners Jazz Collective both lay down some beautiful grooves. Loaded with latent spring and sizzling instrumentation, this release really is rather special.

Review: Chicago's Tony Rainwater delivers a great full length after impressive appearances on Hamburg's Lehult last year. The Rockberry Jam EP is actually his solo debut for the label and is a 'thick, crunchy concoction of sweet and sample-heavy grooves'. Each track was recorded live, according to the American artist, who claims that his production methods involved realtime sampling of his music collection via iTunes, alongside additional loops ripped from vinyl; also employing a spontaneous methodology. "The record is really like my record collection randomly coming together above a kick drum."

Review: After focusing on new funk and Afrobeat on the latest releases, Tramp Records are now back on the track to discover some more rare and obscure funk tunes. "Strut Your Stuff" is a midtempo masterpiece led by a strong bassline which contains a wonderful wah-wah guitar solo. Donald Ray's vocals fits perfectly, it could not have been done better.

Review: The fifth volume of the Really Swing series sees the label tap up the talents of Florence-based duo Ether - better known under their solo monikers of Colossius and Biga - for an 8 track EP of experimental beats. Opening with the off-kilter electro-funk of "Castanger" the duo then move through a wide range of styles, including the radiophonic library music sampling of "Deepfiba", the chopped up Tropicala grooves of "Pupatales 2" and the dub fusion of "Pupatales 4", all of which is delivered with some deft MPC flair.

Review: This is the last of two vinyl teasers from Rush Hour ahead of what looks like a brilliant Recloose retrospective CD. Proceedings open with the stuttering click and thump of "Mym 230 (RIP)" which was included on Matt's debut EP for Planet E way back in 1998. It's a mark of his talent that the cavernous bass throb and jazz techno flourishes sound just as pertinent some 12 years later. This is complemented by a previously unreleased track in "Antares", a flip towards loose filtered house that's made special by the introduction of a delightfully soulful vocal harmony sampled and cut to fit the gaps. On the flip, one of Recloose's biggest tracks "Can't Take It" makes a welcome reappearance, with Dwele's distinctive voice riding out over the burning boogie melodies. Another unreleased gem from the Recloose archives in "Crosstown" rounds off another must have RH release.

Review: Ahead of a retrospective compilation containing some of Recloose's best work, Rush Hour drop the first of two vinyl samplers. Three of the tracks here are the Spelunking EP culled from his long deleted debut for Planet E. The spaced out heavy future funk of "Get There Tonight" still sounds amazing today, while on the flip you get the added bonus of "Land Of The Lost Dance" - an unreleased Recloose track from the same era. Top release.

Review: DJ Junior's multi-skilled, many-souled in-house label troupe gets the reversion treatment with two fantastic dancefloor twists: Osgage adds a nicely loose and free-spirited house twist of "Batucada" that's reminiscent of Recloose's records. On the flip Sol Power All Stars take "Pela" and give it a beautiful sun-splashed Balearic polish. Both capture the sound of a carnival warm-up of the deepest marmalade sunset you've ever experienced, Record Breakin' have delivered something very special right here.
