La Pina Madura (part 1) (4:52)
La Pina Madura (part 2) (4:43)
Review: Abelardo Carbono must be one of Colombia's most legendary artists, particularly for championing the sound of "champeta", a guitar-led style that has come to represent the South American country and its music. The Names You Can Trust imprint comes through with a glorious one-tracker by Carbono himself, alongside his 'Grupo' and, unsurprisingly, the masterful modern production of Quantic. "La Pina Madura" is a beast of a track, all built with percussive glory and the fiery South American zest that is made all the more effective by Quantic's post-production work. Slightly off-kilter and irregular in its shapes, this is undoubtedly a 7" single that you will want to bust out this summer. Blazing hot!

Nickodemus, The Spy From Cairo & Gitkin - "Inmortales (Body Move)" (feat Femina - El Buho remix) (5:22)
Review: Following El Buho's "Tributaries" remix album, Wonderwheel offer up this choice 7" featuring two distinct cuts not found on the main record. First up is El Buho's take on grand master Quantic, working with the storied producer's considerable knowledge of Latin music to create a remix of "Cumbia Sobre El Mar" already well loved on globally minded dancefloors. On the flip comes the never before released El Buho version of Nickodemus and Femina's "Inmortales" - a fierce, drum-tastic version to get bodies shaking down.

Quiet Dawn & Sarah Williams White - "One By One" (4:27)
Takuya Kuroda - "Fade" (KEARL remix) (5:20)
Teotima - "But I Can't" (K15 remix) (4:35)
Review: Earlier this month, First Word Records dropped an epic, digital-only compilation in which members of the label's large family of artists either collaborated with or remixed each other. This 12" boasts four of the collection's undoubted highlights. The EP begins with a simply stunning Kaidi Tatham remix of Allysha Joy's soul-jazz treat 'Better' - think deep broken beat meets liquid jazz-funk and sultry neo-soul - and ends with a fiercely sub-heavy and surprisingly spaced out K15 broken beat rework of Teotima's 'But I Can't'. Sandwiched in between you'll find a jazz-funk-goes-bruk re-wire of Takuya Kuroda's 'Fade' by KEARL (that's K15 and Darkhouse Family's Earl Jeffers) and a wonderful fusion of squelchy synth-jazz and broken beat courtesy of Quiet Dawn and Sarah Williams White.

Doris Monteiro - "Se Voce Quiser Mas Sem Bronquear" (3:00)
Quarteto Em Cy - "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" (2:45)
Review: Mr Bongo's Brazilian 45 series hits it's ninth gear with two region-defining slices of sun-kissed samba soul. Doris takes the lead with delicate frontage. Leading from the front, all instruments follow her cues and mirror each vocal flourish with mild big band cheekiness. The instantly distinctive "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" from sister quartet Quarteto Em Cy is a great twist on a Latin classic with its slightly rocky guitars and full bodied harmonies. Previously released in 1972, a return has been long overdue.

The Pink Rider
Review: Formerly known to fans as Quasamodo, producer Dimitris Nassios keeps the funk flowing with his new moniker The Q Orchestra. "Ritmo Diabolico" is an awesome slice of Latin-infused house, with nu-jazz touches to the production that include rolling brass, long rising filter sections and even the odd Cuica sound to keep it bouncy. "The Pink Raider" backs it up perfectly with its chop-socky guitars and smooth, Donald Byrd-style trumpet leads. Look out for the forthcoming album Journey Through Sounds if this rightly floats your boat.

Gotta Believe (4:32)
Review: Now one of Japan's longest-serving funk and soul combos, QASB has an enviable track record. In November they're due to release their fifth studio album, Candy Dream, which if this teaser single is anything to go by should be another essential set. 'Escape', which lands on a clear vinyl 45, is as sweet as they come, with A.yu'mi's bi-lingual Japanese and English vocals rising above a sweet and crunchy backing track that sits somewhere between Dayton's early '80s jazz-funk classic 'The Sound of Music' (which they audibly reference at numerous points) and breezy classic soul. B-side bonus cut 'Gotta Believe', which isn't featured on the album, is a gloriously Clavinet-heavy affair that once again features plenty of nods to vintage jazz-funk.

Week-End (4:32)
Review: For well over a decade Japanese combo Q.A.S.B has been serving up slices of soulful goodness that variously join the dots between James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Sly and the Family Stone and slower, more thoughtful moments. Here they return to regular home Soul Garden with their first single of 2020. A-side "Thank You" is suitably and summery, with sweet female vocals, glistening guitar riffs, sustained organ chords, hazy horns and simmering strings rising above a skittish, jazz-fired groove. The party intensifies on flipside "Week-End", a Japanese language vocal number that makes the most of a more disco-centric, jazz-funk style soul backing track.

Vivalava (remaster) (4:40)
Review: Q.A.S.B. is a Tokyo-based soul group that presents danceable funky tunes and more mellow laid-back numbers, featuring strong early '70s influences. The track 'Vivalava' is taken from their fifth album Candy Dream released last year. It's veteran DJ/producer Kaoru Kawasaki's Island dub mix which takes the spotlight here, giving what already was an awesome track a nice reshape, with groove dynamics optimised for the dancefloor. The song's magnificent horns section takes centre stage much like the original, supported by Amy A's wonderful vocal. Over on the B side is a Remaster of the original.

Review: QASB's Kono Machi De single, released on Soul Garden Japan, is a vibrant blend of Japanese soul with jazz funk and city pop influences. Side-1 features the Shuya Okino edit of 'Kono Machi De Aka In This Town,' which emphasises a groovy rhythm, enhancing the track's infectious energy. Side-2, has the original version which delivers a feel-good mix of disco strings and a lively horn section, reminiscent of Taste of Honey. Written by Moritaka as a tribute to her hometown Kumamoto, the song includes a nod to Tomari River, a location tied to collaborator Yuichi Takahashi. Having the option of both versions make this 7" a great little 45 to have.

Review: So what happens when you ask IG Culture to cover Parliament's guitarist Eddie Hazel? Shit is funky with enough outer space boogie to freak. IG dons his Quango alias for a blinding cover of "Frantic Moment" with soul lady Eska & Heidi on the vox, this is a take over!! Three mixes of pure P-Funk inspired madness. The Boogie Mix is exactly that & will fit in perfectly in any house or broken beat set, this is the mix that is getting all the heat. The original cover remains fairly true to the original itself but is purely warped hip hop for the headz. The Co Op mix breaks the beat down in a broken style & has been causing mass hysteria in the club it's named after. Already massive with Gilles, the Bugz crew & Mad Matts (Raw Fusion).

Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five (5:40)
Review: Longtime global groove maker and master musician Quantic rare makes a misstep. And you certainly won't find him making one on this new Selva 12" which is two tracks of big band soul. All the usual Quantic standards apply - big glossy, golden horns and wah wah guitar that brings the funk with superbly solid rhythm sections underneath both grooves. 'Theme From Selva' is a real show stopper that would mark any arrival in style and 'Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five' is then a big disco cover of Paul McCartney and Wings' track of the same name taken from their 1973 album Band on the Run.

Review: Man like Quantic aka Will Holland, a real musicologist, world music maestro and bandleader, revisits one of his old tracks following a slew of other producers doing the same. That track is 'Pushin On' and here he takes its timeless Alice Russell vocal and drops it into a new beat. It's one that is swung with plenty of UKG references and is finished off with nice soft melodies up top. Add in a bit of tape hiss and some broken beats and you have an anthem in the making. Flip it over for a paired back instrumental. Either of these will be huge in the club, so do not sleep.

Quantic feat Spanky Wilson - "When You're Through"
DJ Aeon Seven - "Funky Furious"
Review: Another sampler from the recent Modern Funk compilation, mapping the biggest players of 2007 in the funk world.
Retaining the style and ethics of original funk compositions, but giving them a new millennial twist, these 2 tracks
should see some action on the dancefloor. Kicking things off is living legend Spanky Wilson, responsible for the
anthemic cover of 'Sunshine Of Your Love', an end of night classic at clubs the world over. Hooking up with the
closest contender to James Brown's crown as 'the hardest working man in show-business' - Mr Will Holland (aka
Quantic), this is one of the finest examples of old meeting new and it works a treat! On the flip, a relative newcomer
to the funk scene, France's Aeon Seven gives us a drum heavy workout with some fat horns and fresh Hammond
thrown into the mix.

Who Knows (Luis Soulful edit) (3:02)
Review: The Quantic Soul Orchestra, an outfit specialising in all things jazz-related, has been led by the incorrigible Will Holland since 2001, and the group haven't put their foot off the break since they started; if you're looking for some ace, funk-fuelled harmonics with a 'cool' edge then you've come to the right place. This tidy new 7", out through Soulful Torino Records' sweet sublabel Tropical Tigers, kicks off with the warm, bubbly vocals of Kabir who has a little Tom Jones in him from the off and, just so we're clear, the man is handsomely backed by a sweet jazz-funk swing that would have sat very well with the likes of the Kudu catalogue from back in the day. The flip, Louis Soulful's edit, evolves into a deep, tidy, piano-led excursion that will render the original cut a monster out on the dance floor.

Both were recorded in one take live direct to disc (a system which bypasses the use of magnetic tape) and features Will Quantic's band Combo Barbaro, including musicians from Peru and Columbia flown over to UK especially for the recording. Review: Tear shaped vinyl! If that doesn't get your attention, the audio most certainly will. Taken from last year's collaborative album between Alice and Quantic, "I'd Cry" is a serenade of weeping strings and sentimental pianos coated with Alice's honey-dewed dulcets. "Here Again" is delivered on a sumptuous bed of drama. All staccato flutes, big horn back drops and more emphatic Russell goodness. Whether you have the album Look Around The Corner or not, this super-limited, lovely looking vinyl genuinely is essential.

Review: Look Around The Corner sees two of Tru Thoughts most successful artists reunite in the shape of Will Quantic Holland and Alice Russell. When the two have previously collaborated, the results have mostly been dipped in magic and lovingly various - compare the heaving funk of "Pushin On" with the more delicate "Sweet Calling". "Look Around The Corner" is the title track from the album of the same name, and it unfurls into a delightfully soulful flutter of instrumentation delivered by Quantic's world-renowned outfit the Combo Barbaro. It can't help but recall The Rotary Connection and the whole track is lifted beyond the clouds by Russell's immediately distinctive voice.

Polished and primed with their trademark power-lounge flavour, each cut sizzles with off-beat soul and swinging grooves. "Summer Madness" freaks gently like a polite Fatback Band demo. Review: Unusually adept, jazzdancey sonic handicraft from new Rekids signee, Quiet Village. If we at Juno could issue some kind of official rosette or emblem for 'wicked production skills'- on par with a master builder's sextant-engraved headstone - then we'd award Quiet Village with one such memento in a heartbeat. 'Reunion', pressed onto vinyl for the first time here, hears a loose yet effortlessly rhythmic drum break furl, dance about a smooth, nighttime jazz progression for sax and piano. It's giving visions of a down-and-out PI in an 80s neo-noir/romantic drama genre fusion, except this protagonist has just tuned into Rinse FM for the first time - and Rinse FM, in this alternate reality, exists in the 80s. The 'Reprise' version is equally as evocative, sans-ing the drums to allow space to listen to just the melodics, just the overarching ambiences. It's as if Quiet Village know that the true force of the tune, its essence, rests in the core mystique of the aforementioned instrumental combo; the ghost of the drums may continue to play back only in our minds, yet we continue to dance.

Review: Destination Milan, 1983: a group of like minded fusionists meet, jam and lay down their singular take on the blossoming Italo disco sound. A wild brew of funk, boogie, disco, Italo, rock and jazz, these sessions made it to tape but very little of it made it much further. Until now. Restored and remastered, these six tracks capture the familiarity the musicians had with each other and the loose energy shared between them. Highlights include the effortless interplay between guitar and sax on "Permesso?", the playful party swing of "Lino's Theme" and the slinky trippy intro "Strano". Bellissimo.

Paine - "Miraggio" (Desert dub mix) (5:37)
Review: Three years ago, Four Flies Records released a previously unknown album from library music composer Guiliano Sorgini called Africa Oscura - a set of dark, intoxicating instrumentals originally intended to soundtrack documentaries. Now they've decided to get it remixed, with the results being shared over two EPs. There's plenty to admire on this second volume. Jolly Mare step up first with a near perfect Afro-cosmic take on 'Afro Sortilegio'-all tribal percussion, doom-laden bass, funky Clavinet motifs and spacey synth sounds- before PAd [sic] delivers the 'Mondo Bali' mix of 'Notte Nella Savala' -a deep, moody and bass-heavy workout with added delay-laden keys. Elsewhere, Quiroga and Dario Bass reinvent 'Oasi Nella Giungla' is a deep synth-funk warmer, and Paine re-casts 'Miraggio' as a gently but funky Balearic gem.

Review: Q Continuum, one of the tightest funk/soul/jazz bands around. The album ,"This Is The Marienhof", is produced by mighty Nestor and recorded at the most exclusive studio in Helsinki by the legendary T-MU. It is tight!
It was completed with the added talents of Puppa J., Natty Kauka, Indievidual and Axl Smith. The increasingly altered egos of the Q-continuunites were also featured, including: the killer robot "Smultron", who allegedly slaughtered predecessor "Helk"; "€-money" another dark side of the singer Emma; and now of course the sheriff of the town of Marienhof, Texas: Organ Kane.

Review: Welcome to the new sound of Q-Funk, brought to you by the totally cosmic crew called Q Continuum. It rubs shoulders with Breakestra, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Bootsy and George, and even Shuggie Otis in places. They got the funk, the soul & the jazz. But what Q-Continuum do best is to take you on that magical musical mystery ride with a disposition to find and make playfulness a distinct possibility. A feeling of delight in the very far future! Solar soul and future funk.

Review: The new album by Quantic - aka. multi instrumentalist, DJ, composer and producer Will Holland - is in many ways an evolution. Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date. Capturing the beginnings of every good person's revelatory movement from an individual to a collective spirit, Holland originally began the album in his Brooklyn studio, before realising that he didn't just want to make a record that reflected his 'singular pandemic wormhole', but rather one that tapped into the essential togetherness of the human condition. So too does this record explore themes of connection felt through, and made more intense by, the antagonistic bouts of loneliness that characterised COVID-19. Influenced by legendary artists in the scene like Bohannon and Larry Levan, Quantic wanted to make a disco -eaning album at first; "I'm really interested in Latin music and Afro Caribbean rhythms and I think there's a really amazing point in history where the emergence of those rhythms and its combination with American soul sparked what we now know as disco," he says. This PIAS extended edition comes one year on from its initial 2023 release, Quantic here expands on his work by adding a ream of extended versions.

Review: Since he's such a prolific collaborator and creator of bands, it's easy to overlook the fact that Will Holland hasn't released a solo album as Quantic for almost five years. "Atlantic Oscillations", then, is a welcome return - particularly since Tru Thoughts boss Robert Luis thinks it's Holland's "most cohesive and intricate album to date". It's certainly a strong collection, with Holland wrangling multiple styles, tempos and musical influences to create cuts that defy easy categorization. While there are downtempo moments, "Atlantic Oscillations" includes more bona-fide club cuts then he's delivered in recent years, with sun-kissed disco cut "September Blues", Cuban disco-funk workout "Atlantic Oscillations" and Afro-Latin house bumper "Motivic Retrograde" standing out.

Review: It's been 13 years since Will Holland delivered his eclectic, electronica-heavy debut album under the now-familiar Quantic alias. In that time, he's turned into something of a globetrotting fusionist, variously turning his hand to heavy revivalist funk, Cuban beats, cumbia and sweet downtempo grooves. On Magnetica, his ninth album as Quantic, he draws together all of these strands, delivering a dub-heavy set that does a brilliant job in showcasing the sheer breadth and diversity of his influences. With plenty of Latin instrumentation, a huge cast list of guests and nods to early influences such as hip-hop, reggae, electronica and folk, it feels like the culmination of a thrilling, 13-year journey. As a result, it's arguably his strongest set for some time.

Review: This is the fourth solo album by Quantic and Will Holland's eighth full-length production. A year and a half in the making, "An Announcement To Answer" marks the next step in the evolution of Quantic's sound, broadening his musical palette whilst still delivering the trademark funky grooves that have made him a surefire floorfiller for DJs worldwide. Inspired and educated (as opposed to influenced) by the records he discovered whilst traveling and working in Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Ethiopia, Quantic has fused the traditional sounds of these countries with hip hop, soul, funk and jazz to produce his own potent musical brew. Much of the album was written and recorded on a laptop in various locations around the world including Puerto Rico and the Candela studios in San Juan during an extended period of international gigging and crate-digging. Experimenting with new techniques and collaborating with the talented people he met during his travels has endowed Quantic's music with a greater depth, intricacy and level of sophistication than ever before. Guest artists on the album include Noelle Scaggs from The Rebirth, Ohmega Watts and Puerto Rican percussionist Tempo, who has previously worked with Roberto Roena of the legendary Fania All Stars.

Review: Amazingly, it's been a decade since Will Holland first caused waves with The 5th Exotic, his versatile and eccentric debut album as Quantic. Since then, he's charged off in many different directions, conjuring up multiple bands and aliases (Quantic Soul Orchestra, Combo Barbaro, The Limp Twins, Flowering Inferno) to satisfy his various musical desires (everything from heavyweight soul, slacker funk and jazz breaks to Latin, Afro and tropical beats). This first Best Of compilation touches on all these musical strands and more, offering a balanced career overview that really rattles along. All the big tracks are present, alongside long-forgotten early gems ("Life In The Rain", "Super 8") and a smattering of unreleased cuts.

Review: Will Holland's career as Quantic has traversed many different areas, most notably immersing himself in many aspects of Latin American music culture through collaboration, but on this new album he's taken a different approach. What started out as an intention to experiment quickly flipped to become a love letter to disco as a powerful emotional tool for a huge swathe of people. Given disco's affinity for percussive rhythms from elsewhere, you can be sure Holland's put his prior research and talent to good use and once again connected with some incredible artists to shape out his sound, including Andreya Triana singing on four tracks as well as Connie Constance and Rationale.

Review: Will Holland is Quantic and with this project he has explored myriad different musical worlds, has traversed many different areas, most notably immersing himself in many aspects of Latin American music culture, often through collaboration. He's switched it up for this new record after first starting out with some experiments that soon turned into a love letter to disco which has long been a powerful emotional tool. He brings his own sense of percussive energy to the genre and has again worked with an array of talented mates including Connie Constance and Rationale plus vocalist Andreya Triana.

Review: It's commonly known if you cut Will 'Quantic' Holland, he'd bleed in little Tru Thoughts logo-shaped droplets, such is the bond between the artist and label. The latest Quantic long-player for the South Coast label, A New Constellation, finds the Bogota-based musician leading a hand-picked selection of musicians called The Western Transient. Their focus? To realise a set of new compositions paying homage to the rich, lively and intimate quality of the classic soul and jazz recordings. That Holland should choose to follow his last LP, the explosive Magnetica, with 10 tracks of more traditional jazz and funk proves he's still not happy to stand still as Quantic despite having a hand in well over ten long players.

Review: Will "Quantic" Holland is a seriously talented guy. The veteran producer seems to be able to turn his hand to almost any genre, often assembling an all-new band to fit the brief. That's what he's done here, gathering together a sextet of Los Angeles-based jazz musicians under the Western Transient guise. A New Constellation, then, indulges his love of jazz, and specifically the classic material that emerged from L.A throughout the '50s, '60s and '70s. As you might expect, the playing is impeccable, with the emphasis on warm, rich sounds - think lilting horns, yearning guitar solos, rich Rhodes chords and gentle rhythms framed by his now familiar influences (bossa-nova, samba, soul, and so on).
