Review: Proper wackjob broken beat concrete from Miles Newbold, touching down on swampy terrain somewhere suspended between the stark, dub-damaged bruk of Dennis Mcfarlane et al, 50s B-movie sci-fi soundtracks, 60s lounge kitsch, and the close bedroom drum machine soul experiments of pioneers like Shuggie Otis, but avoiding cliche at every turn. Highlights include the opening klang of 'Vital Signs' with its driving drum break giving way to a fantastic planet-esque sea of modular squealings and contractions and the abstract and disarmingly groovy plod of 'Possible Danger'.

Review: The Natural Yogurt Band, purveyors of enigmatic library music, return with their eighth release, a cosmic odyssey that pushes the boundaries of their signature sound. Joined by keyboardist Huw Rees aka The Oracle, the band ventures into a richer galaxy of sonic exploration. 'Projections' sets the stage with its warped organs and gritty drum breaks, while 'Altered States' and 'Bio Morphic Patterns' delve deeper into the cosmic unknown, their swirling melodies and hypnotic rhythms evoking the vastness of space. 'Messages' and 'Nebulous' offer moments of introspection, their ethereal textures and ambient soundscapes creating a sense of otherworldly wonder. On the flipside, 'Perception' and 'Poly Morph' continue the exploration, their pulsating rhythms and experimental soundscapes challenging the listener's perception of reality. 'Existence' and 'Dimensions' close out the journey, their expansive sounds and philosophical undertones leaving a lasting impression. Review: Since its release way back in 1968, The Perfumed Garden has become a much-discussed cult classic. It's certainly a unique offering, with the whole thing built around Indian vocalist and poet Chitra Neogy's sultry and expressive spoken word interpretation of a centuries-old erotic text that has been likened to the better-known Karma-Sutra. Neogy's spoken word vocals, which often come drenched in reverb, are simply sublime, with some tracks consisting merely of these inspired readings. Where the album really comes alive, though, is when her words are given musical accompaniment - think sitar, tabla, strings and more - from an ensemble of experienced Indian musicians. An oddball gem that's well worth further investigation.

Review: The title 'Maze Of Sounds' is revealing enough; together in 2020, Janko Nilovic and The Soul Surfers built a musical labyrinth, with the Russian bandleader's instrument of choice (the keyboard) intended as a spiritual guide for navigation through what would otherwise be a rather difficult and surreal tribulation. A contemporary instrumental soul and funk album for those who like to set the scene with a glass of sherry and a dash of mystique, the cuts here - from 'Sweet Path' to 'It Never Ends' - are cinematic tools for relaxation, contemplation, and of-course, guidance.

Review: Here comes a lovely green version of this cult classic album. Even by the standards of the library music scene, where eccentricity seemed to be encouraged, Nino Nardini and Roger Roger's Jungle Obsession is brilliantly bonkers. Apparently designed as a musical version of The Jungle Book, the 1971 set saw the experienced multi-instrumentalists offer up a colourful, quirky and highly entertaining collection of cuts that variously drew on exotica, lounge music, early synthesizer soundscapes, Afro-funk, psych-funk, and the tongue-in-cheek oddness of Jean-Jacques Perrey. As this remastered, 50th-anniversary reissue proves, the album remains hugely alluring and entertaining, delivering a string of off-kilter musical highlights that can't fail to put smiles on faces.
