Review: In the transitional period after their complex, chaotic debut, 'Calculating Infinity', departure of founding vocalist Dmitiri Minikakis, and before the arrival of hyper terrifying frontman Greg Puciato, mathcore legends Dillinger Escape Plan were at a loss.
Still not content on a suitable permanent vocal replacement yet refusing to simply sit on their hands in the interim, the 'Irony Is A Dead Scene' EP served as a creative outlet turned fan favourite and cult classic, thanks in no small part to the enlisting of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Dead Cross (etc.) vocalist/absurdist extraordinaire Mike Patton.
The weirdness and sickly, sexy snarl Patton imbued into the dizzying arrangements and audible assault would leave a lasting impact on the Dillinger trajectory from then on, with a much more tempered focus on industrial, groove and ambient nuances, while cuts would never stray too far from live sets.
The fact that at their three New York farewell shows, the band even performed the EP in its entirety with Patton joining them on stage, speaks volumes to the credence, regard and influence these four tracks would have on the remainder of their career for decades to come.
Also, while 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things' may be the centrepiece, the cover of Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy' needs to be heard to be believed, even just to hear founding drummer Chris Penney figure out that percussion on a live kit.
A four-track EP, yes, but also one of the most intrinsic pieces of the Dillinger catalogue.

Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Review: "You'll be okay" Bonnie Baxtor says at the opening of the collaborative EP between New York-based multi-talented experimental artist Machine Girl with Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo mastermind Dai Sato. Currently being crowdfunded, Sato is crafting a brand new Manga series surrounding sound, frequency and the music industry in a dystopian cyberpunk setting. Who better to call, then, than Matt Stephenson, who recently scored the 'Neon White' soundtrack? Baxtor, whose vocals open the record on standout single 'Black Glass', is a frequent collaborator of Stephenson's on a wild side project Prolaps. 'Black Glass' evokes the sounds from 2018s 'The Ugly Art', the subtly pitch-shifted harps giving way to Stephenson's hallmark half-shouted howling - a far departure from breakcore debut album 'Wlfgrl' that featured little to no vocals at all. 'Dance in the Fire' keeps the vibes pumping, an absolute earworm of a synth hook backs an anthem of letting your FREQ flag fly.

Review: Mal-one's sixth single looks to shine a light on a controversial garment by Malcolm Mclaren and Vivienne Westwood known as the Anarchy Shirt. The prototype was made on old stock of Wemblex shirts and Malcolm added quotes from revolutionist Durutti such as 'Dangerously Close To Love' and 'Only Anarchists Are Pretty.' They gave him inspiration for this tune which is the latest in a long line of edgy punk anthems from the artist who emerged from the West London scene and has since exhibited alongside the likes of Banksy, Goldie and Peter Blake.

Review: London punk lifer, Mal-One, grew up in the true first wave of UK punk, even having his childhood bike stolen by another local young boy, one Steve Jones (yes, Sex Pistols Steve Jones) at the age of seven in the suburbs of Hammersmith. Now, so many decades on, the debut 12" under the Mal-One moniker arrives with an EP utterly indebted to the retro infatuation with Miss Debbie Harry. The adorning artwork features a homemade collage, while the included poster has been spotted around the city, continuing the artist's street gallery saga. This piece of absurdist, classic pop-punk is worth the price of admission for the title-track's rap verse spieling of Blondie song titles alone. Get involved.

Review: Mal-One may be best known as a punk-inspired visual artist whose work is regularly displayed alongside pieces by Jamie Reid, Peter Blake and Banksy, but he's also an enthusiastic punk musician. 'Punk Badge' is the latest in a long-line of special Record Store Day seven-inch releases from the artist and comes packaged in one of six different sleeves. It's a nice package and the song itself - a whole-hearted tribute to the humble button badge - is a pleasingly authentic slab of '76 punk that comes complete with snarling, John Lydon-esque lead vocals, raw guitar riffs and low-slung bass. The stripped-back, largely vocal free flipside 'Version' - a more skeletal, groove-based affair inspired by dub-style reggae mixes - is also rather good.

Review: Mal-One is a historian of punk rock music in many ways. From growing up on the same street as the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook, to studying the culture in many aspects from the sound, artwork and people in the scene. Mal-one is a beacon to the origins of the UK Punk beginnings. Many say his artwork captures the scene and time perfectly. 'When The Two 77's Clashed' is the lead single from the full-length album Punk Rock Is Back! At first listen, you immediately hear the UK influence and Sex Pistols up, front and center. The alternate version is on the B-side is a touch more reserved and holds back on the energy of the original, focusing more on the bassline to take the lead then the all-out angst of the album version. For those interested in this period of Punk music, Mal-One is staggering figure of the culture.

Review: Interesting anecdote about Mal One - the standard-bearer of straight up punk rock and attitude in the 21st Century grew up in the same neighbourhood as Paul Cook and Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, with the latter stealing his bike at the tender age of seven. Clearly not put off, he would soon become immersed in the anarchistic scene, and by 2016 put out his debut, Class of '76, released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the punk movement's initial spark. Almost a decade on and Mal-One has lost none of the quality that first made us fall for him. The Ballad of Johnny Rotten is up front and uncomplicated stuff, delivering its message in a way we could definitely imagine the namesake icon getting on board with. The kind of authenticity that seems increasingly difficult to find in the world today.
