Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Review: We're always keen for a full-length trip into the fantastic worlds of Gerard Hansen. As Convextion, he's mastered the art of sonic futurism charged with palpable human heart, eliciting the deepest emotional impact from his synths and strapping them to elegant, infectious electro and techno rhythms. That modus operandi continues beautifully on this new transmission for A.r.t.l.e.s.s., replete with vintage sci-fi artwork and four extended cuts stretched out over a side of vinyl each. All the better to sink into, not least on the subtly grooving, Plastikman-esquedepth charge 'Miranda'.

Review: Random Factor's 'On The Air' EP is a hugely sought-after classic by those who know. It came on Ralph Lawson's ever-reliable 20/20 Vision and now, as it turns 25 years old, he has decided it is the right time to get it remastered and reissued. 'On The Air' is first up on this fine EP from Carl Finlow and it has serene synths that bring to mind Detroit techno soul over pulsing bass and slick drums. 'Lockdown' has a raw vocoder vocal over punchy drums and twitchy synth stabs and 'Undercurrent' is another weapon that has more than withstood the test of time as it bumps along on funky drums and is overlaid with more playful synth patterns. 'Disconnect' is a crunchy and 8-bit closer with pixelated synths and screwy acid lines. Superb.

Review: First of all, wow, how did this one already turn a quarter of a century old? It still sounds as wildly inventive now as it did back then and is fully deserving of this reissue. '808 The Bassqueen' is a truly mesmerising sonic journey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music with Villalobos's trademark blend of minimal techno and experimental soundscapes. He crafts a hypnotic and immersive mix of intricate rhythms, pulsating basslines, and deft synth textures that defy categorization and showcase Villalobos's mastery of groove and his ability to captivate listeners with subtle yet powerful sonic manipulations. This is the sound of a true visionary at work.

Review: It's no wonder Dopplereffekt named their latest EP 'Inifinite Tetraspace'. For starters, a tetrahedron is a 3D triangular pyramid of equal lengths per side. A sine wave, meanwhile, is in auditory form considered the purest, most basic sound - it is also the graph produced by plotting all the ratio points between two sides of a triangle. The logical conclusion is this: infinite tetraspace might be considered the ultimate form of repetitive sound, carrying on forever, triangulating constantly in all directions, never ceasing. For all its vivid imaginings, Dopplereffekt's dualistic, stereo-effected sound carries on in full force on their latest EP for Curtis Electronix, tetra-scribing four icy, unsettling entities that may only be encountered in this special extra-conscious zone.

Review: Orbital's debut album is classic album in the techno genre. A name that needs no introduction really, Orbital defined rave and techno through the 90s creatively and performance wise. This self-titled or as many know it by, 'The Green Album' features perhaps the most popular songs of the rave generation in 'Chime' and 'Belfast'. However, tracks like 'Midnight', 'Steel Cube Idolatry' and 'The Mobius' are the birthmarks of Orbital finding their sound that would turn them into Glastonbury legends and soundtrack pioneers. This edition is true to the original 2x12 making it desirable for those new to the album, those who want a second copy or those who want to complete their Orbital collection. Orbital's roots begin here and have them at their most raw. Do not miss out on having a part of rave history with this record!

Review: Rawax's Motor City Edition series is back with more tech from Detroit and this time it is Los Hermanos at the buttons. Gerald Mitchell opens up the 12" with 'Two Feet Up' which brings warm and soul-infused techno vibes and some lush strong stabs. 'Remember Detroit' is a just as deep cut with slick drums and sci-fi melodies rippling throughout the arrangement and then the flipside ups the energy levels with the more twitchy and synapse-firing 'Central Nervous Systems' complete with plenty of busy melodies. Things chill out a little for the closer, 'Path Of Tranquility', which showcases some lush melodies and serene synth strings.

Review: Originally released in 1991 when most music journalists believed it was impossible to release a good dance album, Orbital's eponymous debut album remains one of the most significant sets of its' time - proof that techno artists (as the Hartnoll brothers were referred to at the time) can make killer full-length excursions. Here the album returns in freshly remastered form, via a superb spruce-up job that makes it sound heavier and more sonically refined than ever before. The closing three-track suite of 'Chime (Live)', 'Midnight (Live)' and 'Belfast' remains unbeatable, but there's plenty of sonic brilliance elsewhere across the album - not least the epic (and constantly changing) 'Desert Storm', the saucer-eyed, piano-sporting bounce of 'Fahrenheit 303' and the bleep-influenced excellence of 'Steel Cube Idolatry'.

He has roasted pretty exclusively here and never fails to innovate with each new drop. This one again hits the mark across seven elastic techno cuts that are underpinned by lovely dub weight and propelled by tight, pinging kicks. 'Dachtekker' is lit up with hi-tek soul synths straight from Detroit, 'Double Standard' is deliciously deep and driving with swirling pads smeared around up top and 'Small Stone S700' manages to pair soul-drenched chords full of subtle joy with kinetic drum programming that makes you want to move. Junction Forest is a physical record store in Seoul, South Korea and also a recent home to releasing some great techno sounds. Dark Energy by Inner Lakes is their newest record and comes with four strong late-night romps into classic but updated techno and trance sounds.'H2k' is a hypnotic builder that rides a nasty bassline to a triumphant ending while 'Sundown' is a mysterious traveller that takes you into another realm. On the flip side, the title track is an uptempo track that takes on a more spiritual trance path. Lastly, 'Voo2' is a wicked voyage into darker techno and trance happiness.

Review: Label boss El Prevost makes a welcome return to No Speakers after it's been on something of a break. Thankfully the quality levels remain high here as he kicks off with 'Catastrophizing', a brilliantly bass-heavy cut with broken beats to make you sweat. On the flip, 'Landing' has a more inward sense of reflection with its fizzing synths and deep space atmospheres making an indelible mark. Last of all, the magic of Detroit looms large with a superb remix by Motor City mainstay Kyle Hall. His version of 'Landing' brings some jazzy melodic vibes and one of his trademark deep house and bumping grooves. This is another essential 12" from No Speakers.

Review: Frame Of Mind has been one of the best techno and house labels in the past couple years hailing from the Netherlands. This is the second appearance for Synaptic Voyager on the label in total. 'Epoch Ten' exhibits a premier example of the quality ambient techno the label has released in recent years. Fans of As One, FBA, Stasis and Sensurreal are sure to gravitate toward this track in particular. The 90s Detroit vibe is here in many respects. 'Ne Plus Ultra' and 'Reverie' are perfect tributes to the lineage there. The robot funk in 'Milestone' is particularly exciting with this early 90s styled foray into UK techno while 'Parallax' gives off a heavy Innovator and early Warp label impressions. If you are a fan of ambient techno then this is a quick and easy pickup.

Having solicited the tracks straight from the horse's mouth, the label are more than proud to repackage the track alongside its two original remixes by the artist, the Q and Z variations, while also bunging in a special ambient Derridean dub Deconstruction by none other than Octo Industrie. Review: Pye Corner Audio shows off his love of acid on the first of two EPs for Emotional Response that drop simultaneously. This first one is his debut on the label and comes with a gorgeous cover that perfectly encapsulates the sounds within. 'Dust Acid' is a sparse cut with dusty drums and meandering basslines that slowly sink you in, then 'Magnetic Acid Two,' which like all of these was recorded live, is another expertly reduced brew of murkiness with plenty of frayed edges and vintage analog sounds. 'Wanna Show U Acid' is a late-night acid dream and 'Magnetic Acid Four' shuts down slightly more bite. Four timeless backroom cuts, make no mistake.

For this one she joins forces with New York's master of the deep Fred P for a superb new single. 'Chateau Dance' is marbled with spiritual pads and smoky jazz leads as muttered vocals pan about the mix over deep but gentle broken drum loops. Dutch titan Steve Rachmad remixes twice - first with some warming machine soul and a little more drive, and then with a twitcher sense of energy and more potent drums. A truly tasteful package.

As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. Neo Tantric Parts draws from the deep well of Millsart archives, with 'Tear Drop Nebula' especially benefitting from a new mix as it shuffles percussion and vibraphone chimes around microtonal cascades which give the music a particularly giddy quality. 'The Phonetic World' has a punchy presence without losing that lighter style Mills adopts under this alias, while 'Neptunian Landing' heads into spookier territory with some faithful 909 hats for guidance. Watch out for 'Unidentified' though, a truly tweaked-out slice of space lounge gear for watching the walls of you mind melt after one too many solar flares.

This one from Martin Jenkins finds him making an homage to the acid house he has always loved with opener 'Stegan Acid' starting with slow grocers and foggy moods run through with subtle 303 modulations. 'Magnetic Acid Three' is another deep and stripped-back sound with rumbling drums and bass coloured with soft acid contours and 'Thermionic Acid' gurgles a little more as the icy hi-hats cut through a mutant deep techno swamp. Review: The Hartnoll Brothers have decided to remaster and reissue their eponymous 1991 debut album - frequently referred to as 'The Green' album for obvious reasons. Amongst the numerous editions is this delicious box set, which compliments the fantastic original album (stretched across two slabs of wax), with a slipmat, a 60-page hardback book of photos and fresh liner notes, and an additional double-album of rarities and unreleased cuts from the period. It's this latter item, which includes B-sides, non-album singles (hello 'Satan') and sought-after remixes (Sasha's legendary version of 'Midnight' and the barely known 'Rhyme and Reason' take on 'Satan'), which makes the box set so alluring to fans. Basically, it's the ultimate edition of a British dance classic.

Sansibar & Denzel - "Sonic Minds"
2K
Review: Sansibar aka Sunny Seppa is fast becoming a large name in underground techno and house. Now, he has opened up his new label called Sin Sistema with the first release titled 'We Rise'. The title track is a pure crusher! This fast-paced corker features a wicked acid line and a beautiful lingering melody that creates an almost acid trance stormer. Things change up quickly with the slow acid wiggle of 'Elastic' that has us comparing it to legendary slow acid tracks like from Jammin Unit. For the second side, 'Sonic Minds' might just be the floor filler of the lot while '2K' is the dancefloor workout monster for the house heads. If 'We Rise' is any indication, Sin Sistema will be a label to buy on the spot.

Review: Mike Dehnert delivers a versatile four-track EP of his signature slippery machine funq on Syncrophone, with tendrils of influence unfurling in a plethora of directions, from DJ Rush and Paul Johnson's springheeled Chi-town bump to the more recent soul leanings of John FM and Omar S' FXHE alumni. Opener 'Un' is the most conservative, with a restless shuffling b-line and surgically cropped hats assembled for maximum club pressure, while 'Deux' is a spacious, clattering soulful trip full of small room synth squelch and honeyed vocal mantras. The flip is both more pensive and noisy, with the distant hydraulic wheeze of 'Trois' giving way to the wonky, swaggering gait of the closer 'Quatre'. Proper.

Review: Danza Nativa has done a great job of establishing its own unique sound in the techno sphere over the last half a decade. Now it marks the occasion of its fifth birthday with a two-part compilation that showcases its avant-garde take on the genre. They tell us that part one has been assembled as a sort of "mental (as in pensive, not deranged) techno album that takes the form of some direct tools for working DJs. Anthony Linell, Claudio PRC, Luigi Tozzi and Daniel[I] are those who step up and explore abstract, drone, deep and plenty in between.

It finds him serving up plenty of his intricate sound designs and meticulously crafted rhythms with 'Turning Blue' a full favour tech cut with cosmic energy. 'Retract' is darker with thudding drums and futuristic moods and 'Vlaag' then gets all heady with deft synth modulations and 'Clarity' brings some lush late night house sophistication. A classy EP, for sure.

Review: Ohm and Kvadrant return to their spiritual home of Kontakt with more of that grandiose dub techno immersion they do so well, plumbing epic depths both within and beyond the functional demands of the dancefloor. 'Precious Little Diamond' kicks the record off in a steady-cruising form, guided by a smooth minimal tech house beat as the engine for some choice dub techno chords and mechanical hiccups. Deadbeat then takes the helm for a version which plunges into abstract echo chamber sonics he's spent decades perfecting before Levon Vincent completes the picture with a remix which heads into the outer limits of deep techno immersion.

Review: Detroit's Limited Network label has been receiving a well-earned buzz since their inception and now they are back celebrating with their tentth edition called 'The Silver Lining EP'. Label owner Max Watts presents the title track on the A-side. This is pure Detroit goodness with keys that remind us of classic Derrick May tracks. Harnessing the post-apocalyptic to the tee, this is sure to garner lots of praise from veterans and the young alike. For the B-side, Max brings in fellow Detroit producer Huey Mnemonic for a strong collaboration on the stylish 'Echoes of Change'. Then closing things out, Huey adds a high energy funk remix to that same offering. Both are tracky and upbeat gems that remind us of works by Steve Rachmad. Throwing around comparisons like that is not something we do lightly. These have all the makings of a classic!

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

Review: On fresh 2xLP heavyweight vinyl comes this unprecedented new compilation from the Ranges label, who here celebrate the tenth anniversary of their launch back in 2014. The name of the game: wompy tech meets permafrosty encasements of dub and muted trance, evoking a muted listenership, as if the perceiver is no less than the same amniotic spheroid trapped between abstract filaments depicted on the front cover. Pressurised but still headroomy contributions from the likes of Merv, JS Zeiter, Gradient, Ohm, El Choop, Federsen, and Submoon make for increasingly confident spelunkings of the ice cave, aiding the discovery of the fabled glistening audio-ores and invisible walkways found inside.

Steve Spacek occupies the A-side with the breezy broken beat and soul-in-space of 'Alone In Da Sun', while Lukid's 'Hair Of The Dog' is a more intense counterpart, with wobbling sub-bass and swirling, surging atmospherics hovering above.

Review: For anyone who takes deep, uncompromising techno seriously, Mike Parker is a true benchmark of quality. The Buffalo, New York artist has unfurled his catalogue over the course of more than 20 years with a steely focus which is immune to the shifting sands of trend and hype in the wider scene. Now the Field label are reissuing his breakthrough 2001 LP Dispatches, which is a textbook summation of his imperious style. At a time when there's increased appreciation for deeper-diving strains of techno, Parker's hypnotic, expertly sculpted sound slots right in to the contemporary framework with a building-block quality which will inspire many a DJ to get busy layering and blending.

'Palantir' opens with fathoms-deep dub and ice-cold synths that snake their way over the face of the track, while 'Hyperdrive' has rumbling chords and smeared pads that keep you on the ocean floor and 'Dub Conjurer' allows in a little more light from the surface with delicate shards piercing the murk. 'Tales From The Outer Rim' shuts down with a nice gentle rhythm that undulates beneath rippling pad work and works well as perfect early evening warm up.

After that one comes the manic and high tempo electro-shocks of 'Not Unique' with snappy snares and darkened vocals. Last but not least is the most brutal assault of them all - '7 Days A Week', a melange of wild acid lines and liquid metal leads with turbulent bass and a general sense of intergalactic warfare.

The EP starts with the Belic & Mani remix of 'Revolution', which is a pulsating techno and electro track that ties in nostalgic 90s sounds along focusing heavily on being a prime slot dancefloor track. Also, on the first side is 'Fight Night', which is a classic Belgian influenced material featuring plenty of strong keyboard stabs and an addictive groove. For the B-side, you have the futuristic and classy 'The Falling' and 'Third Saturn Moon' who both conjure up some dramatic post Italo vibes along with some early strong trance and new beat vibes. Hand it to the French label Lumbago for continuing to release such great retro tracks.

Now he lands on Italian label Sublunar with more of that refined, precision engineered gear for the wormhole crew. Review: The Future Sound Of Sardinia follow hot on the heels of London, fixing yet one more cog to their prospective time machine with a new V/A compilation. 'Centuconcas' welcomes one contribution each from Claudio PRC, Agi Thoriu, Andrea Ferlin, and Jarpp. Each artist is caught exercising a deeper-into-their-own-pysches dub flavour than usual; PRC's sonic epigraph 'Uraki' is an impressive demonstration, unconsciously driving its sticky chording ricochets unto semi-conscious ears; Thoriu's 'Aressi' follows up with a neat fusion, yielding something between ambient future garage and a deep tribal entrainment; Ferlin's 'Hydra' is far more muted and operational in mood, veering more on lo-fi tech; and to close, Jarpp summons his inner MPC for 'Su Passu Turrau', taking its namesake from a traditional Italian line dance (but in actuality, the track sounds like nothing of the sort, unless we entertain the idea that this is the soundtrack to a line dance beamed in from the future...)

Rounded With A Sleep (Smagghe & Cross remix)
Review: Simple Symmetry are back on Calypso for a second offering but this time around it's in a different format. They've enlisted remixes of tracks from their Sorry We Did Something Wrong album which first landed back in 2021 as a self-released project, which won over many fans with a sound that went way beyond the club and now gets repurposed for the dancefloor with extended and club versions. The Horsemen Of Housing & Commercial Services rework of 'Che Che' is a dark disco classic, Smaghhe & Cross rework 'Rounded With A Sleep' into something taught and trippy and INigo Vontier layers in plenty of darkness, grit and grime to his take on 'I Must Not Fear'.

Theme For What
Geek Groove Odyssey
Out Of Mood
Review: Pressure Traxx secures the sounds of acclaimed minimal master and Romanian mainstay Dan Andrei on this fine new 12", Clockworks. The title track opens up and is coarse and rich in texture, with slapping hits taking centre stage while languid guitars slowly garner your attention. 'Theme For What' is another unusual one, this time with trippy melodies and tumbling drum loops, while 'Geek Groove Odyssey' layers up pulsing bass and bleeping sonar synths into a serene cosmic trip. 'Out Of Mood' is another tense tech cut with edgy synths keeping you in suspense as the dark drums march on.

Hectic
Pure Potential
Review: The unstoppable production powerhouse that is Paul Woolford aka Special Request is back with another of his frankly ridiculous run of releases. Never one to just drop a single tune, this year he has several albums on the way off the back of his superb re-imagining of the KLF's cult 'What Time Is Love?' and this Portals Box Set Project is one of them. It is a multi-part collection that "uses today's modern technology to bring you the sound of tomorrow" and each limited edition 12" comes with its own custom artwork by Nic Hamilton. As you should expect, these are all utterly monstrous bangers and this first part has the high-pressure techno bounce of 'Hectic' and 'Pure Potential' to welcome you to the Portal.

Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Track 4
Review: It is five up for the French label Chivalry here and the eponymous production outfit is behind the sounds which are distinctly futuristic and techno-minded. The opener rides on gurgling low ends and distant synth tension that is always on the rise as whistles vie for your attention up front. 'Track 2' is another wonky and industrial tech house sound with snappy drums that will jerk the floor into action and 'Track 3' then gets a little more smooth with its warped tones and alien sound effects. Last of all is 'Track 4', a jacked-up tune that spins you out on loopy synth madness.
